<p>Russia on Sunday (April 7) held Ukraine responsible for launching drones on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station and causing safety concerns.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ukraine's military was held responsible for the attack by Russia's nuclear power corporation Rosatom and international energy officials for detonating a drone against the dome which covered the closed nuclear reactor.</p>

<p>As per the International Atomic Energy Agency, the unmanned device exploded near the dome of one of the reactors at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is the biggest nuclear power plant in Europe.</p>

<p>The Russian-installed administration, which was set up after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022, reported the incident. According to Russian officials, no serious damage happened to the reactor and the radiation levels remained normal.</p>

<p>Rosatom claimed that three people were injured in the incident&nbsp;and one suffered serious injuries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a statement posted on the official Telegram channel of the plant, Russian authorities accused the Ukrainian military of using “self-exploding” drones against it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per a Ukrainian intelligence official, Kyiv did not carry out any strikes on the station, Reuters reported.</p>

<p>Defense Intelligence of Ukraine spokesperson Andriy Yusov, while speaking to Ukrainian news outlet Ukrainska Pravda, said, “The aggressor state is once again endangering the nuclear facility, civilians and the environment of the whole of Europe."</p>

<h2><strong>UN nuclear watchdog condemns attack</strong></h2>

<p>UN’s atomic watchdog agency head Rafael Grossi condemned the attack on the nuclear power plant.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said that the attack was "reckless" and "a major escalation of the nuclear safety and security dangers" facing the plant. He further warned that such attacks “significantly increase the risk of a major nuclear accident”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Grossi, in a statement on X, confirmed that at least three direct strikes were made against the main reactor containment structures of the plant.</p>

<p>It is believed that ISRO’s drone programme is still in the conceptual stage. The drone is expected to fly as high as 100 metres in thin Martian air.</p>

<p>While SFRC chair&nbsp;Republican Michael McCaul and ranking member Democrat Gregory Meeks gave a nod to the proposed deal, Cardin stalled it, albeit briefly.</p>

<p>“My approval was the result of months of painstaking discussions. While I’m fully aware of the significance of this sale, for US national security and strategic interests,” Cardin said.</p>

<p>"I have consistently conveyed my concerns regarding the timing of this sale to administration officials in light of the alleged murder-for-hire plot involving Indian officials to attempt to assassinate an American citizen on US soil," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cardin's statement came after the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on Thursday (Feb 1) delivered the required certification notifying US Congress of the sale of 31 of these Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The deal involving MQ-9B drones comes at an estimated cost of $3.99 billion.</p>

<p>Under the proposed deal, New Delhi will receive 31 High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) UAVs, of which the Navy will get 15 SeaGuardian drones while the Army and AIr Force will receive eight each of the land version.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The procurement of these drones by India comes as the country is looking to enhance its maritime security. This also comes at a crucial juncture as recent attacks on Red Sea shipping by Houthi rebels have raised concerns globally and exposed the vulnerability of maritime trade routes to threats.</p>
