Similarly, in a separate courtroom in Washington, Richard Barnett, the man who was captured with his feet on a desk in US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office has also been convicted of disrupting Congress and other crimes.&nbsp;

The 68-year-old man became one of the faces of the January 06 attack pictures.&nbsp;His picture displayed him leaning back in a chair propping his boots on the desk of one of the most powerful politicians in Congress, Pelosi.&nbsp;

Barnett was convicted of eight counts including Congress’s certification of the election, illegally entering the Capitol and more. He joined Trump’s supporters in crashing through the Capitol’s offices and halls to shut down the legislature.&nbsp;

Though, Barnett was not accused of conspiring against the government.&nbsp;

According to the court filing, he said, “I put a quarter on her desk even though she ain't f...ing worth it.”

He faces in total up to 47 years in prison.&nbsp;

Monday’s verdict comes two months after the conviction of two January 06 Oath Keepers for seditious conspiracy.&nbsp;

Until now, amongst thousands of people who participated in what was called an insurrection to keep Trump in the White House, some 530 have been found guilty or pleaded guilty.

Over 950 individuals have been arrested for taking part in the riot, most on lessers charges of illegally entering the Capitol and causing property damages.&nbsp;

Additionally, 280 individuals have been charged with assaulting law enforcement officers and some 50 with high conspiracy crimes.&nbsp;

A picture of Trump and Merlino were carried by the Philadelphia Inquirer, in which the two of them can be seen standing together and making thumbs-up gestures. The publication said a source, who requested anonymity, gave them the picture that shows Trump with two men, one of whom is Merlino. The identity of the second person is not known.

“President Trump takes countless photos with people,” the spokesperson told the publication.&nbsp;

“That does not mean he knows every single person he comes in contact with.”

The paper said that Merlino was once “a leader of a violent crew on his way up to being boss of an organised crime operation active in Philadelphia and Atlantic City". Notably, Trump used to own&nbsp;a few casinos in Atlantic City.

He was sentenced to 10 years in jail after being convicted on racketeering charges in 2001. He again spent some time in 2018, after pleading guilty to a gambling charge, and was later released in 2020.

The paper further said that the two “share an affinity for golf and an aversion to cooperating witnesses who ‘flip’ to help federal investigators”.

Trump made his stand clear on "flippers" in 2018 when his former lawyer Michael Cohen started cooperating with investigators probing Trump’s links to Russia.

"It’s called flipping and it almost ought to be illegal,” Trump had said at the time. "It’s not a fair thing, but that’s why he did it. He made a very good deal."

Merlino came out in support of Trump and said, "President Trump was right. They need to outlaw the flippers."

Trump had acknowledged in 2013 that he knows some people involved in organised crime, although he likes to "stay away from that group".

“I have met on occasion a few of those people. They happen to be very nice people.”

He added: “You just don’t want to owe them money. Don’t owe them money.”

The judge also noted that a number of allegations made by Trump in the lawsuit were exemplifying ‘abusive litigation tactics’.&nbsp; 
 
"I find that the pleadings here were abusive litigation tactics. The complaint and amended complaint were drafted to advance a political narrative; not to address legal harm caused by any defendant," Middlebrooks wrote of Trump’s lawsuit.

The White House announced on Saturday that President Joe Biden's lawyers uncovered more classified papers at his residence in Wilmington, Delaware, than was previously reported. Biden's private library was searched, and six pages of classified documents were discovered, as per&nbsp;a statement from White House attorney Richard Sauber. There was only one page discovered, according to prior statements from the White House.

The maximum penalty that Justice Merchan can impose is $1.6 million, an amount which is equal to double the taxes that a small group of executives avoided on benefits which included rent-free apartments in Trump buildings, private school tuition and luxury cars, a report by the Associated Press said earlier in the day.&nbsp;

On Tuesday (January 10), Allen Weisselberg, the former chief financial officer (CFO) of the Trump Organization was sentenced to five months in jail by Justice Merchan. Last summer, Weisselberg had pleaded guilty to evading taxes on $1.7 million in compensation.&nbsp;

While serving as the Trump Organization's CFO, Allen Weisselberg, 75, received a rent-free apartment in a Trump-branded building in Manhattan. Weisselberg and his wife were given Mercedes-Benz cars which were leased by the company. When his grandchildren went to an exclusive private school, Donald Trump paid their tuition fee, the Associated Press report said.&nbsp;

When he was called to testify against the company at trial, the 75-year-old testified he didn’t pay taxes on that compensation, and that he and a company vice president conspired to hide the perks by having the company issue falsified W-2 forms. Weisselberg also said nobody in the Trump family knew what he did. “It was my own personal greed that led to this,” he told jurors.&nbsp;

&nbsp;“Weisselberg did it for Weisselberg,” lawyers of the Trump Organization said, contending the former CFO went rogue and betrayed the company’s trust.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump, who is eyeing a comeback in 2024, said the case against the Trump Organization is part of a politically motivated “witch hunt” waged against him by Democrats. But this is not the only legal challenge for him. Trump is facing investigations related to the Capitol riots, his retention of classified documents after leaving the White House, and efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss in Georgia.

However, it was delayed because of the presence of sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers. &nbsp;

As quoted by NBC News, Trump slammed the release in a statement, saying that "the Democrats should have never done it, the Supreme Court should have never approved it, and it’s going to lead to horrible things for so many people."&nbsp;

Notably, the presidents make their returns public as per the modern precedent but Trump claimed that the returns he fought to keep hidden "show how proudly successful I have been and how I have been able to use depreciation and various other tax deductions as an incentive for creating thousands of jobs and magnificent structures and enterprises."&nbsp;

In a campaign video, which was released on Friday, Trump called the decision of releasing documents an "outrageous abuse of power" and "completely unconstitutional".&nbsp;

Trump said, "There is no legitimate legislative purpose for their action. And if you look at what they've done, it's so sad for our country." He further added that "it's nothing but another deranged political witch hunt which has been going on from the day I came down an escalator in Trump Tower."&nbsp;

Last week, the committee released a report on its findings and said that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) broke its own rules by not auditing Trump for three of the four years of his presidency.&nbsp;

Democrats on the committee had only a few weeks to decide how to handle the returns once they got them before Republicans retake control of the US House in January. &nbsp;Republicans registered a narrow margin of victory in November's midterm elections.&nbsp;

The report contains allegations that Trump himself "oversaw" the dubious effort of claiming that the elections were rigged. “In the Committee’s hearings, we presented evidence of what ultimately became a multi-part plan to overturn the 2020 Presidential election,” says the report from the US House of Representatives select committee, released on Thursday.

“That evidence has led to an overriding and straight forward conclusion: the central cause of January 6th was one man, former President Donald Trump, whom many others followed. None of the events of January 6th would have happened without him.”

The House committee, comprising both Democrats and Republicans, prepared the 845-page report after 1,000-plus interviews, examination of a large number of documents, phone records, texts and more.

The panel has made a recommendation to the US Justice Department that criminal charges be filed against Trump. This is the first time ever that such a recommendation has been made against a former president.

Once the legislation takes effect, it would become harder for future presidential losers to prevent the ascension of their opponents, similar to what Donald Trump tried to do on January 6, 2021, when he incited a mob to prevent the certification of Biden.

The new provision also adds another threshold required for members of Congress to object to certifying the electors. Under new rules, at least 20% of the members of each chamber had to object to recall on a state’s electors.

Earlier, only one member of the House and Senate respectively had to object to force a roll call vote on a state’s electors.

Moreover, under the new rules, one-fifth of each chamber would be required to force a vote on states’ slates of electors.

The new provisions also make sure that only one slate of electors makes it to Congress. It has been added in response to the attempts made by Trump and his allies to unsuccessfully create alternative slates of electors in states Biden won.

Now, each governor would be required to sign off on electors, and Congress cannot consider slates submitted by different officials. The bill creates a legal process if any of those electors are challenged by a presidential candidate.
