White supremacist ideology Elon Musk's decision to cut back moderation after he bought Twitter has led to an exacerbation of unease about the spread of hate speech. The Anti-Defamation League published data on Friday which said that there has been a surge of more than 60% in anti-Semitic tweets which are related to Judaism and Jews in the past two weeks after Musk's takeover of Twitter. The rhetoric matches the steady increase in the occurrence of hateful incidents targeted towards Jews. It was discovered by the Anti-Defamation League that reports related to vandalism, harassment and violence against Jews increased drastically, reaching an all-time high, in the United States in 2021. In 2019, the country had to deal with a shocking incident of deadly shootings which targeted synagogues in Pittsburgh and California. After the twin attacks, concerns were reinforced about anti-Semitic hatred becoming a rallying point for resurged white supremacists, who had received encouragement after Trump had failed to condemn their ideology unequivocally. The former president's critics, which include Republican rebels like Liz Cheney, have slammed the party for enabling anti-Semitism and white supremacy under Trump's sway. Biden, who has himself claimed that he decided to run for president after hearing Trump's refusal to denounce a neo-Nazi rally organised in Charlottesville in 2017, has spoken repeatedly against the ideology which he believes "tears at the soul" of the nation. Prosecutors in the Trump Organization tax fraud asserted on Friday (December 2) that former US president Donald Trump knew about the fraud taking place in the family business. Prosecution also said that not only Trump knew about the fraud, he also sanctioned the manoeuvres that enabled his companies avoid tax in a sweeping 15-year operation.

“Donald Trump is explicitly sanctioning tax fraud. That’s what this document shows,” said Joshua Steinglass, the prosecutor in Manhattan Criminal Court on Friday. “This whole narrative that Donald Trump is blissfully ignorant is just not real.”

Trump's lawyers have taken a stance that the former US president did not know about the fraud taking place in the organisation. Their line of defence is concentrated on the assertion that Allen Weisselberg, a former senior executive in the company, committed the fraud.

"We are here today because of one reason and one reason only - the greed of Allen Weisselberg," said the defence earlier this week. "The purpose of Mr. Weisselberg's crimes was to benefit Mr. Weisselberg."

Defence lawyer Susan Necheles also said that Donald Bender, an accountant with the firm Mazars USA, did not pay heed to Weisselberg's wrongdoing and chose to stay silent.&nbsp;

On Friday, when the prosecution alleged that Trump knew about the fraud, the defence asked the judge for a mistrial.

“We picked a jury...based on the people’s representations that Donald Trump was not on trial,” said defence lawyer Michael van der Veen, adding that the prosecution has now “made him a co-conspirator.”

The entire matter revolves around the Trump Organization which was charged in July 2021 with paying personal expenses for some executives without reporting the income. They were also compensated as if they were independent contractors, in a 15-year scheme to cheat tax authorities.

Trump knew about tax fraud in his company, says prosecution in closing arguments

Former US president Donald Trump was dealt a major blow on Thursday (December 1) as an appeals court rejected his efforts to stop prosecutors from examining thousands of government documents at his Florida home. Trump has held on to the documents even after leaving office.

The federal appeals court in Atlanta, Georgia unanimously overruled a previous order by a Florida judge to appoint a "special master" to review documents seized at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach in August, preventing the justice department from using them in its investigation of Trump's behaviour in the documents case.

The seized documents include thousands of White House records. These were property of the US National Archives. There were also 100 classified documents. Some of them are marked with highest secrecy designations.

Appointment of the special master delayed and threatened to disable the justice department's criminal investigation of Trump for unauthorised possession of national defence information. This falls under the Espionage Act and for obstruction of justice.

But three Atlanta appeals court justices said there was nothing illegal about the August 8 search and document seizure, and that the Florida judge had no jurisdiction to place limits on the justice department's examination of the documents.

They also rejected Trump's claim that the search and seizure violated his rights and that as a former president, he deserved special treatment to protect his reputation.

"It is indeed extraordinary for a warrant to be executed at the home of a former president -- but not in a way that affects our legal analysis or otherwise gives the judiciary license to interfere in an ongoing investigation," the justices wrote.

The ruling effectively removes restrictions that could have hampered the investigation of Trump by Special Counsel Jack Smith, who was appointed on November 18 to take charge of the two major federal investigations into Trump.

House minority leader, Kevin McCarthy, on Tuesday, said, “I don’t think anybody should have a meeting with Nick Fuentes, and his views are nowhere within the Republican Party or within this country itself.”&nbsp;He added that Trump should also not associate with Ye. These remarks were made following his meeting with incumbent President Biden in Washington. &nbsp;

Branding the August search of his Florida house Mar-a-Lago an "invasion", he further alleged that other US presidents too "took" similar documents.

Smith a veteran war crime prosecutor was recently appointed as special counsel to oversee the multiple criminal investigations involving Trump.

The dinner has faced criticism not just from Trump's opponents but also from people of his own Republican party. The Republican governor of Arkansas Asa Hutchinson charged Trump with encouraging extremism.

Hutchinson told CNN "I don't think it's a good idea for a leader who's setting an example for the country or the party to meet with an avowed racist or anti-Semite."

Reuters reported that the White House &nbsp;too slammed Trump, saying in a statement that "bigotry, hate, and antisemitism have absolutely no place in America — including at Mar-A-Lago."

In a video posted on his social media application 'Truth&nbsp;Social' Trump, said&nbsp; he met with Ye and "we got along great, he expressed no anti-Semitism, &amp; I appreciated all of the nice things he said about me on 'Tucker Carlson [show].'"

As per the billionaire, he didn't know Fuentes and West had requested to meet alone but he showed up "with three people, two of which I didn't know."

It's unclear if the rapper is serious about his objectives or whether he was just looking for attention following a string of PR stunts that damaged his reputation. The famous US rapper ran for president in 2020 but received less than 70,000 votes, landing in eighth place.&nbsp; 
 
Trump, meanwhile, distanced himself from a pre-Thanksgiving dinner at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida with Kanye West, and white supremacist Nick Fuentes, claiming he didn’t know the identity of the far-right activist who was unexpectedly brought along with the rapper.

Later, during his interview with CBS News last week, the former vice president accused the January 06 committee of being "partisan." When asked, whether he'll voluntarily testify for the investigation, he said, "I'm closing door on that."

The special counsel will define whether the former US president will face any charges.&nbsp;

During this, Pence's testimony might help to certify Trump's attempts on Biden's 2021 win.&nbsp;

US DoJ asks former VP Mike Pence to testify in Jan 6 Capitol attack probe

Former US President Donald Trump has been sued for defamation a second time. On Thursday former Elle magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll accused him of lying by denying that he had raped her 27 years back.

The writer has filed the complaint with a federal court in Manhattan under New York's Adult Survivors Act. The new rule gives victims of sexual assault a year to file a lawsuit against their alleged abusers, even if the incident took place in the past and the statute of limitations has run out.&nbsp;Survivors can sue their alleged abusers starting Thanksgiving Day (November 24th).

Reuters reports that in her complaint, Carroll has also charged Trump with battery in an alleged encounter at the Bergdorf Goodman store in Manhattan.

She claimed that Trump's battery left her with psychological damage, unable to maintain a romantic relationship, which she used as evidence for her battery claim.

This is Carroll's second defamation case against Trump, the first one was filed in 2019 after the billionaire initially denied the accusation.

Donald Trump has repeatedly denied raping Carroll or even knowing her back then. He dismissed the accusation saying "she's not my type". He also took to his social media platform 'Truth Social' and called the writer's claims lies and "hoax".

Both parties are awaiting the outcome of an appeals court case that will address Trump's claim that his remarks as president rendered him immune from Carroll's initial lawsuit.

Carroll's first complaint risks getting dismissed if judges decided that the United States government, which enjoys sovereign immunity from defamation charges, could be used in place of Trump as a defendant.

However, even if the dismissal were to happen it would not affect her latest complaint as having left the White House in January 2021, Trump is now a private citizen.

The first lawsuit is due to go to trial on February 6, 2023, before US District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan, but as per Reuters, this is likely to be postponed due to the appeals process.

The new rule gives victims of sexual assault a year to file a lawsuit against their alleged abusers, even if the incident took place in the past and the statute of limitations has run out. This is Carroll's second defamation case against Trump, the first one was filed in 2019 after the billionaire initially denied the accusation. Expect a wild two-year ride through legislative gridlock, Republican Party investigations of President Joe Biden, and ugly campaigns for the 2024 presidential elections for which former president Donald Trump announced his candidacy even though his star power is waning.

After results that fell far short of Republican expectations, it is far from certain that Trump will be the nominee of a party he has dominated for six years. Infighting broke out even before he announced his candidacy at an event shunned by senior party establishment figures and even his daughter Ivanka, a close aide and confidante during his four years in power.

Election day was November 8 but because of complicated electoral procedures that vary from state to state, it took nine days for the announcement that Republicans had captured the 218 seats they needed to control the 435-seat chamber. Their wafer-thin majority stands in stark contrast with predictions of a “red tsunami,” red being the party colour.

The Democrats kept control of the Senate, winning 50 of the 100 seats. One Senate contest, in Georgia, will be decided in a run-off vote on December 6. It pits the Democratic incumbent, Raphael Warnock, against the Trump-backed former football star Herschel Walker. But even if Walker wins, Democrats would control a 50-50 split as Vice President Kamala Harris has the tie-breaking vote.

The election result not only surprised Republican leaders and most media prognosticators predicting a “red wave” but it also ran against a long-established historical trend. In the 22 mid-term elections from 1934 to 2018, the incumbent president’s party averaged a loss of 28 seats in the House and four in the Senate.

The reason: Republicans largely campaigned on economic issues: inflation, the high price of food and gasoline as well as rising crime and immigration. Biden and Democratic candidates focused on threats to democracy highlighted by January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol by Trump followers trying to overturn the results of the presidential elections Biden won.

Just hours after the official result of the contest for the House was announced, it became clear that for the next two years, Republican focus would be on investigative rather than legislative efforts.

James Comer, the Kentucky Republican who is expected to chair the House Oversight and Reform Committee, announced the panel would investigate the Biden family’s financial affairs, with a focus on President Biden’s son Hunter and his business dealings in Ukraine, Russia and China.

Republicans are also planning a House Judiciary Committee probe into allegations that the Biden administration exerted undue influence on the Department of Justice and on courts pressing ahead with multiple criminal investigations arising from attempts to reverse Trump’s loss in the 2020 elections.

The former president is also facing a civil trial in New York that could wreck his financial empire. Analysts from both sides of the political divide have speculated that Trump’s announcement of his candidature was aimed to protect him from prosecution. According to the Justice Department, his status as a candidate would make no difference. But how this will play out remains to be seen.

In his speech announcing his presidential run, Trump appeared to assume he would be his party’s nominee. That would have been a reasonable bet before the mid-term elections and the defeat of candidates he endorsed in return for perpetuating his baseless assertion that the 2020 elections were stolen from him.

Now, even former allies and Rupert Murdoch’s media empire viz. the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post and Fox News,&nbsp;have begun to portray him as a loser.

In his speech announcing his third run at the presidency, Trump remarked “I am a victim. I will tell you. I am a victim,” a reference to an array of investigations and an FBI raid on his Mar-a-Largo home to seize top secret documents he had taken from the White House.

There was a succinct response from former New Jersey governor Chris Christie, once a close ally: “Republicans don’t vote for victims. They vote for leaders.”

Under Trump’s leadership, the Republican Party scored big losses in the 2018 mid-term elections; two years later he lost in the presidential race, and this year most Trump-backed candidates lost and the “red wave” turned out to be merely a trickle.

This makes little difference to the type of Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol and those who cheered the insurrection and continue to insist he won the vote. But what might change his status in the eyes of his devoted base is that Trump is becoming an object of public mockery.

The prize for diminishing the former president with ridicule goes to the once Trump-friendly New York Post which ran a front-page two days after the election with the headline ‘Trumpty Dumpty’ under a picture of Trump as an egg perched on a brick wall. The text next to the mock-up: “Don (who couldn’t build a wall) had a great fall – can all the GOP’s men put the party back together again?”

The Post, once described by Trump as his favourite paper, pushed its new-found, Murdoch-sanctioned disdain even further five days later.
