The 1956 Olympic bronze medallist, former world 1500m and mile record-holder John Landy has died at the age of 91.

The Australian, born in Melbourne in 1930, is best known for becoming the second man in history to break four minutes for the mile.

His 3:58.0 clocking in Turku in June 1954 broke the iconic mark of 3:59.4 achieved just six weeks earlier by Roger Bannister.

Landy's generosity of spirit and interest in others was one of his notable character traits. It was augmented by an uncanny memory for names and faces.

This generosity famously extended to giving advice to Ireland's Ron Delany, who defeated Landy in the 1500m at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games.

Landy was Australian champion on five occasions - taking gold over 800yards, one mile and three miles. He was inducted into the Athletics Australia Hall of Fame in 2004. Its luncheon series is named in his honour.

He was a proud and respected member of Athletics International. He became a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1955 and received the Australian Sports Medal in 2000.

A year later he received the Centenary Medal and was made a Companion of the Order of Australia.

Landy was governor of Victoria from 1 January 2001 to 7 April 2006. He was the final runner in the Queen`s Baton Relay at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, receiving the baton from Olympic teammate and fellow state governor Marjorie Nelson, and delivering it to Queen Elizabeth II.

A passionate naturalist, photographer and environmentalist, he was author of two books - Close to Nature (1984) and A Coastal Diary (1993).

He was a lifelong butterfly collector, donating his collection to the Australian Museum in Sydney in 2018."Our world is poorer without John Landy in it," said World Athletics President Sebastian Coe in a statement on Saturday.

Japanese chemist Ei-ichi Negishi who won the Nobel prize for developing a method for creating complex chemicals necessary for manufacturing drugs and electronics has died aged 85, his US university said.

Negishi died on Sunday in Indianapolis, Purdue University said in a statement on Friday, adding his family would lay him to rest in Japan sometime next year.

The Manchuria-born scientist graduated from the prestigious University of Tokyo and worked at Japanese chemical giant Teijin before going to the United States on a Fulbright scholarship in 1960 to study chemistry. He joined the Purdue faculty in 1979.

In 2010, he won the Nobel Prize for chemistry along with Richard Heck of the University&nbsp;of Delaware and Akira Suzuki of Hokkaido University.

Awarded the title of "Gaja Muthassi" (elephant granny), Dakshayani took part in temple rituals and processions for decades, but breathed her last on Tuesday after becoming reluctant to eat, her veterinary surgeon said.

"At 3 pm, a sudden shiver passed through her large frame beginning from the head region. After a few minutes, she bent her forelimbs and lay down. And that was it," T&nbsp;Rajeev told AFP.

The Travancore Devaswom Board, which owned Dakshayani, gave her age as 88.

The oldest elephant in captivity recognised by Guinness World Records was aged 86 — Lin Wang, another Asian elephant which died in 2003 in a Taiwan zoo. Captive elephants have a life expectancy of 40-plus years.

Pineapples and carrots had been introduced to Dakshayani's diet in recent years to improve her metabolism after she began to have difficulty moving around, probably due to reduced eyesight.

"For the past three years she did not take part in any temple programme or public function," Rajeev said.

"And a couple of months back, we had even moved her to a better tethering place at an elephant farm in Thiruvananthapuram."

Wildlife conservationists such as PS Easa have criticised the practice of keeping elephants in captivity, regardless of their conditions.

He said Thursday all such animals should be released to their natural habitat, adding that bestowing titles on elephants did nothing for their well-being.

"All they want, or for that matter, any animal would want, is to be in their natural habitat and have enough space to move around and sufficient food to eat," he said.&nbsp;

Wildlife experts say some 15,000 Asian elephants -- or nearly one in three -- live in captivity globally, often in dire conditions.&nbsp;

A Spanish village today declared a day of mourning following the death of a retired farmer billed as &quot;the world&#39;s oldest man&quot;, who passed away just over a month after turning 113.

Francisco Nunez Olivera, who was 10 years old when World War I broke out, died on Monday in the village of Bienvenida in southwestern Spain where he had lived throughout his life, village mayor Antonio Carmona told AFP.

&quot;It&#39;s a very cold day and most of all a very sad day,&quot; Carmona said.

Born on December 13, 1904, relatives credited Nunez Olivera&#39;s long life to a diet based on vegetables he grew on his own land and a daily glass of red wine.

Every morning for breakfast, he would have sponge cake made with olive oil and a glass of milk.

And until the age of 107, he went out for daily walks by himself, according to Spanish media reports published when he celebrated his last birthday.

While the Spanish media described Nunez Olivera as the world&#39;s oldest man, his name did not appear on a list kept by the Gerontology Research Group, which validates the ages of the world&#39;s longest-living people.

The US-based group lists Japan&#39;s Masazou Nonaka, born on July 25, 1905 making him 112, as the world&#39;s oldest man but Carmona said there were documents to prove the Spaniard was in fact older.

It also lists a Japanese woman, aged 117, as the world&#39;s oldest person.

&quot;We were in the process of applying for him to enter into the Guinness Book of World Records. It meant a lot to his neighbours to be represented by the oldest man in the world,&quot; Carmona said.

Proving Nunez Olivera&#39;s exact age has been complicated by the fact that most of Bienvenida&#39;s public archives were destroyed during Spain&#39;s 1936-39 civil war, according to newspaper El Mundo.

Nunez Olivera, known in the village as Marchena due to his likeness to a Spanish flamenco singer who used that stage name, had been a widower since 1988.

He fought in the Rif War in the first half of the 1920s between Spain and the Berber tribes of the Rif mountains in Morocco and survived General Francisco Franco&#39;s 1936-75 dictatorship.

On Tuesday afternoon, he was set to be buried in Bienvenida.

He was one of 32 people over the age of 90 among the roughly 2,200 inhabitants of the village, according to El Mundo.

A 26-year-old Dalit man on Thursday died in police custody under suspicious circumstances in Kanpur, following which twelve police personnel have been suspended. 
 
Kamal Valmiki, a resident of Shiv Katra village, was found dead at Ahirwan police station on Thursday afternoon after he was picked up along with another man, Raju Mistri, Wednesday in a case of loot. 
 
Police called the family of Mistri to identify the body, which was later claimed by Kamal&#39;s family.
