<p>Bollywood icons Dharmendra and Hema Malini have been one of Bollywood’s most celebrated couples, both on as well as off screen. The cinema legends, who married in 1980, had the most unconventional love story. And while Hema Malini was called names for first falling in love and then marrying a married man with four kids, she maintained her dignity and emotional maturity throughout.&nbsp;</p><h2>Dharmendra- Hema Malini love story</h2><p>The pair met on the sets of the film Tu Haseen Main Jawan in the 1970s. Dharmendra was already a popular face on screen, known for his good looks and charm. He was also already married to Prakash Kaur. Hema Malini, younger than the actor by over a decade, was a rising star with her own fan base.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>What began as on-screen chemistry soon evolved into real-life affection, and before long, their romance became the stuff of tabloid legend.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The love story, however, was marred by obstacles and objections.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In her biography, 'Hema Malini: Beyond the Dream Girl', it was revealed that her mother, Jaya Chakravarthy, had tried to convince her to marry actor Jeetendra instead of Dharmendra. Jeetendra had reportedly proposed marriage to Hema Malini. So did Sanjeev Kumar. But Hema Malini’s love for Dharmendra remained undeterred.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In 1980, when Dharmendra decided to marry Hema Malini without divorcing his first wife, it sent shockwaves across the country.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The decision was bold and stirred controversy like never before.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/sholay-dharamveer-satyakam-10-golden-films-of-dharmendra-that-defined-his-era-1762833319322">Sholay, Dharamveer, Satyakam: 10 golden films of Dharmendra that defined his Era</a></p><h2>Why Hema Malini and Dharmendra never live together?</h2><p>Dharmendra’s choice to marry Hema Malini without divorcing Prakash Kaur meant that the actress would never be given the status of his wife within traditional norms. Hema was aware of it, but her love for Dharmendra superseded the labels and scrutiny around their relationship.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>From the outside, their love story seemed to be a dream-like union of two of Bollywood’s biggest stars. Jeetendra had reportedly proposed marriage to Hema Malini. So did Sanjeev Kumar. But Hema Malini’s love for Dharmendra remained undeterred. He married the actress in 1980, which gained a lot of attention among fans. He did not divorce his wife before marrying again, but reports suggest that Dharmendra converted to Islam for it.</p><h2>When Prakash Kaur defended Dharmendra</h2><p>In an interview with Stardust, she first defended the actor, saying, "He is the first love and the last man in my life… however far he may be from me, if I need him, I know he’ll be there. I have not lost my trust in him." She also criticized the industry for calling him “womaniser” when extra-marital relationships were common in Bollywood. She also added, "Any man would have preferred Hema over me."</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Also Read: </strong><a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/bollywood/indian-cinema-legend-dharmendra-passes-away-at-89-1763971146144"><strong>Indian cinema legend&nbsp;Dharmendra&nbsp;passes away at 89</strong></a></p><p>&nbsp;</p>

A day after the rumours of Dharmendra's death resurfaced, the actor was discharged. Speaking of Dharmendra, Dr Pratit Samdani said, “Dharmendra ji was discharged around 7:30 am. His treatment and management with recovery will continue at home.”

Veteran actor Dharmendra is recovering at home after he was discharged from the hospital, where he had been admitted for more than a week. The actor's health plummeted this week, after which he was shifted to a ventilator. However, the actor showed signs of recovery and was responding well to the treatments. The past few days have been particularly challenging for the Deol family, as his sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, along with his wife Hema Malini and daughter Esha Deol, were frequently seen visiting him at Breach Candy Hospital during his stay. Amid all, Hema Malini has talked about the situation, sharing that the veteran actor's health is a great concern for them. In a chat with Subhash K Jha, as quoted by The Times of India, Hema said that all the children are sleepless. But she's relieved that he's out of the hospital. “It has not been an easy time for me. Dharamji’s health is a matter of great concern for us. His children are sleepless. I can’t afford to be weak, too many responsibilities,'' she says. Jai meets Veeru Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra have collaborated in several films together but the two’s camaraderie is remembered most for their portrayal of Jai and Veeru in Sholay. The two had played friends in the Ramesh Sippy movie, who had an unbreakable bond. On Wednesday, as Big B made his way to Dharmendra’s home, many people recalled their bond. The senior actor was seen slowly manoeuvring his luxury car even as media and paps hovered around to click photos of him. He carefully avoided photographers.

<p>On Wednesday, Dharmendra was shifted from the hospital to home, where his treatment will continue. Later in the day, Amitabh Bachchan went to visit his ailing friend with whom he has collaborated on several films including the blockbuster Sholay.&nbsp;</p>
