<p>If it had not been for the laundryman's goof-up, Dev Anand and Guru Dutt perhaps would not have formed such a formidable bond with each other. The two stalwarts of Indian cinema were known to be close friends and had even worked together in a few films,</p>

"Often, he’d bring his camera with him and photograph me in Pali Hill, at a gold club that doesn’t exist anymore. Guru was fond of taking pictures, of making pictures. He was hardworking and intelligent. Later, I discovered he was also fond of acting. But I don’t think he was a great actor. He was a better director. He used to waste a lot of footage," said Anand in the interview.&nbsp;<br />

Dutt and Anand even made promises to each other that if Anand ever produced a film, he would take Dutt as the director and if he directed a film, Anand would be his leading hero.&nbsp;</p>

Dev had a string of flops and went to Guru with the hope of reviving their team to deliver a much-needed hit under Navketan films. Guru, however, refused and asked Dev to opt for another director. Dutt had almost decided to retire from filmmaking as in 1959, <em>Kagaz Ke Phool </em>had flopped and left him shattered. He lost interest in life and began drinking heavily.<br />

It has been sold for approximately ₹350-400 crores as it's a prime location with bungalows of prominent industrialists in the locality. The source added, “His son Suniel stays in (in the) US whereas daughter Devina lives in Ooty along with mother Kalpana Kartik. There is no one in Mumbai to take care of the property and hence they have taken the decision to sell off the bungalow. <p>In honour of the legendary screen icon Dev Anand's 100th birthday on September 26, 2023, the &nbsp;National Film Development Corporation -National Film Archive of India and the Film Heritage Foundation, in partnership with PVR INOX, proudly introduced "Dev Anand @ 100 - Forever Youthful." – a weekend festival of four Dev Anand milestone films in cinemas in 30 cities and 55 cinemas across India on September 23 and&nbsp;24, 2023.<br />
<br />
To truly pay homage to Dev Anand and honour his birth centenary, NFDC-NFAI embarked on an arduous journey of restoring the four classics of the charismatic actor in the 4K resolution.</p>

<p>This event is a weekend festival featuring a thoughtfully curated lineup, by FHF, of films, enabling audiences to spend a weekend with Dev Anand in his various unforgettable roles in &nbsp;<em>C. I. D.</em>&nbsp;(1956), <em>Guide</em>&nbsp;(1965), <em>Jewel Thief</em>&nbsp;(1967), and<em> Johny Mera Naam</em>&nbsp;(1970). The restoration of these films is being undertaken as part of the National Film Heritage Mission and funded by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. NFDC-NFAI hopes to showcase the appeal of Dev Anand to a new generation and rekindle the nostalgia of those who have cherished his work through these brand-new restorations.&nbsp;</p>

Before initiating restoration, 35mm Release Prints of <em>Guide, Jewel Thief</em> and<em> Johny Mera Naam </em>and 35mm Dupe Negative of<em> C.I.D.</em> have been scanned on state-of-the-art archival film scanners in 4K resolution.</p>

<p>The aforementioned film elements have been preserved in NFDC - NFAI's vaults for several decades in temperature and relative humidity-controlled environments. It is this long-term preservation of the landmark films that have made the new 4K restorations possible.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The films have been available in poor quality for years, and as of now are also not available on any OTT platforms in high resolution, let alone in 4K restored format. Keeping the centenary of Dev Anand in mind, NFDC-NFAI has been working on the restorations for the past several months where each and every frame is being restored meticulously where time-induced artefacts are digitally removed such as dust, dirt, splices, pinholes, tear and scratches. A 3-hour long movie has more than 2.5 lakh frames, which need to be worked upon. This is followed by colour grading, where concentrated efforts are put to tackle the issue of colour fading and make the film appear as vibrant looking as it was at the time of the release. Simultaneously the audio of the film is also being digitally restored. The final restoration would give the feeling to the audience as if the print is freshly processed and printed in a photochemical film lab.<br />

"It is important for the public to witness Dev Anand on the big screen once again, and in a manner how he was viewed during his heyday decades ago. NFDC-NFAI is sparing no efforts to ensure these films are presented in the best way possible, as hundreds of restoration artists, technicians, graders, DOPs, sound engineers and archivists, spread across multiple cities, are hard at work to once again bring these films to life", MD NFDC, Prithul Kumar, on the importance of preserving and restoring Dev Anand's films.</p>

<p>Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, Director, Film Heritage Foundation said, “After the success of Film Heritage Foundation’s mega festivals “Bachchan Back to the Beginning” and “Dilip Kumar – Hero of Heroes” to commemorate Amitabh Bachchan’s 80 th birthday and Dilip Kumar’s birth centenary with screenings across the country, we knew that there was no way that we could allow the birth centenary of Dev Anand to go uncelebrated. We wanted to honor his legacy by screening four milestone films “CID”, “Guide”, “Jewel Thief” and “Johny Mera Naam”, in 30 cities across India. The films are among my personal favorites as I consider Goldie Anand one of the most stylish directors of Indian cinema. The festival also marks an important collaboration between Film Heritage Foundation and NFDC-NFAI who have restored the four films and partnered with us to enable us to showcase these films. The Gregory Peck of India, as Dev Anand was often called, continues to be a beloved star, and we are thrilled that contemporary audiences will have the opportunity to watch some of the films that made him an enduring legend of Indian cinema. This is another milestone in the Film Heritage Foundation’s journey to bring classics of Indian cinema to modern viewers because after all these films are a part of our history and culture and if we don’t know where we came from, we won’t know where we are going.”</p>

<p>As dissemination is one of its primary objectives, the NFDC-NFAI wanted these restorations to reach as wide an audience as possible. Hence, the archive collaborated with FHF to organize a curated festival of Dev Anand films at a scope hitherto unseen in India. NFDC-NFAI is especially thankful to PVR and INOX, for allowing them to leverage their screens to give country wide audiences a rare chance to revisit Dev Sahab on the big screen.</p>

<p>The NFDC-National Film Archive of India is committed to revitalizing classic cinema from the past by restoring and presenting it in stunning 4K quality. Numerous films are currently undergoing restoration, and audiences can anticipate many more such screenings in the coming days.</p>

Zindagi’s Farar to premiere at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival 2023 Before initiating restoration, 35mm Release Prints of Guide, Jewel Thief and Johny Mera Naam and 35mm Dupe Negative of C.I.D. have been scanned on state-of-the-art archival film scanners in 4K resolution. The aforementioned film elements have been preserved in NFDC - NFAI's vaults for several decades in temperature and relative humidity-controlled environments. It is this long-term preservation of the landmark films that have made the new 4K restorations possible. The films have been available in poor quality for years, and as of now are also not available on any OTT platforms in high resolution, let alone in 4K restored format. Keeping the centenary of Dev Anand in mind, NFDC-NFAI has been working on the restorations for the past several months where each and every frame is being restored meticulously where time-induced artefacts are digitally removed such as dust, dirt, splices, pinholes, tear and scratches. A 3-hour long movie has more than 2.5 lakh frames, which need to be worked upon. This is followed by colour grading, where concentrated efforts are put to tackle the issue of colour fading and make the film appear as vibrant looking as it was at the time of the release. Simultaneously the audio of the film is also being digitally restored. The final restoration would give the feeling to the audience as if the print is freshly processed and printed in a photochemical film lab. "It is important for the public to witness Dev Anand on the big screen once again, and in a manner how he was viewed during his heyday decades ago. NFDC-NFAI is sparing no efforts to ensure these films are presented in the best way possible, as hundreds of restoration artists, technicians, graders, DOPs, sound engineers and archivists, spread across multiple cities, are hard at work to once again bring these films to life", MD NFDC, Prithul Kumar, on the importance of preserving and restoring Dev Anand's films. He adds, "Showcasing the restoration of Dev Anand’s films on the occasion of his centenary, as a joint endeavor between both film archives, NFDC-National Film Archive of India and Film Heritage Foundation, along with our esteemed partners, INOX and PVR, is a testament to our shared commitment to preserving India's cinematic heritage. We aspire to sustain these collaborative efforts, to provide broader public access to the gems of Indian Cinema, in the quality they are meant to be seen." Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, Director, Film Heritage Foundation said, “After the success of Film Heritage Foundation’s mega festivals “Bachchan Back to the Beginning” and “Dilip Kumar – Hero of Heroes” to commemorate Amitabh Bachchan’s 80 th birthday and Dilip Kumar’s birth centenary with screenings across the country, we knew that there was no way that we could allow the birth centenary of Dev Anand to go uncelebrated. We wanted to honor his legacy by screening four milestone films “CID”, “Guide”, “Jewel Thief” and “Johny Mera Naam”, in 30 cities across India. The films are among my personal favorites as I consider Goldie Anand one of the most stylish directors of Indian cinema. The festival also marks an important collaboration between Film Heritage Foundation and NFDC-NFAI who have restored the four films and partnered with us to enable us to showcase these films. The Gregory Peck of India, as Dev Anand was often called, continues to be a beloved star, and we are thrilled that contemporary audiences will have the opportunity to watch some of the films that made him an enduring legend of Indian cinema. This is another milestone in the Film Heritage Foundation’s journey to bring classics of Indian cinema to modern viewers because after all these films are a part of our history and culture and if we don’t know where we came from, we won’t know where we are going.” As dissemination is one of its primary objectives, the NFDC-NFAI wanted these restorations to reach as wide an audience as possible. Hence, the archive collaborated with FHF to organize a curated festival of Dev Anand films at a scope hitherto unseen in India. NFDC-NFAI is especially thankful to PVR and INOX, for allowing them to leverage their screens to give country wide audiences a rare chance to revisit Dev Sahab on the big screen. The NFDC-National Film Archive of India is committed to revitalizing classic cinema from the past by restoring and presenting it in stunning 4K quality. <p>Twinkle Khanna recently sat down with veteran Bollywood actress Waheeda Rehman as she reminisced about her time with late actor Dev Anand, with whom she’d worked in several films.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Waheeda was in conversation with Twinkle Khanna, for an interview shared on the Tweak India YouTube channel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dilip Kumar would have been 99-years-old this year. As the man, who was just a few years younger than Indian cinema itself, breathed his last on Wednesday morning, he left behind a legacy that will forever remain a significant part of Indian cinema's history.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kumar was never formally trained in acting yet his style, his way of emoting without saying anything has served as an institution for generations of actors in India. He was one of the first in India to try method acting- something that he picked up on his own and a process that many of the well-known artists in India follow to date.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Not many know that after playing the tragic roles on screen, the actor went into major depression and even consulted a psychiatrist in London who advised him to take up more 'cheerful' roles. The actor was famous for his method acting and often immersed himself into the character he was playing at that moment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dilip Kumar eventually went on to master not just tragic roles but comedy as well with equal elan. If people remember him playing the tragic lover in 'Devdas', they also remember his impeccable comic timing in 'Azaad' and 'Ram Aur Shyam'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He taught a generation of leading men in India how to be the quintessential hero. He was the love-struck Prince in 'Mughal-e-Azam', a Bengali <em>bhadralok</em> in 'Milan' and 'Shikast', a farmer in 'Naya Daur', Mela and 'Ganga Jamuna' and the tragic lover in 'Devdas'. He was part of films that resonated with the changing India, often making strong political statements through his films.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Born in Pakistan, the actor was revered in the subcontinent for his cinema. He even was awarded Pakistan's highest civilian honour, 'Nishan-e-Imtiaz'. The award had drawn a certain amount of criticism in India as he had accepted it. Anand and Kapoor passed on many years back and Kumar was one of the few who remained from the golden era of Indian cinema. With Dilip Kumar breathing his last on Wednesday, a glorious era comes to an end. He leaves behind a tall work of incredible cinema that has carved a permanent place in the books of history.&nbsp;</p>

The award had drawn a certain amount of criticism in India as he had accepted it. <p>A host of luminaries from different fields were on the bus that took Atal Bihari Vajpayee on the historic journey from Amritsar to Lahore in 1999 but cricketer Kapil Dev was perhaps the most gracious, recalls the late prime minister's private secretary Shakti Sinha in a new book.</p>

<p>It took 40 minutes for the bus to go from the Indian side of Punjab to the Pakistani side and the seat next to Vajpayee on that momentous ride was a much-coveted one.</p>

<p>"The bus had two seats on either side of the aisle. Vajpayee was on the first seat on the left side of the bus, all by himself.</p>

<p>Throughout the short forty-minute journey, we provided an opportunity for each member of the delegation to sit with Vajpayee and chat for a while.</p>

<p>"Kapil Dev came across as the most gracious, quickly moving out when it was the turn of somebody else to sit with Vajpayee. With some of the others, I had to almost physically evict them; they shall not be named as they are not with us anymore," Sinha writes in "Vajpayee: The Years that Changed India" that hit the stands on Friday, the late leader's 96th birth anniversary.</p>

<p>Among the others accompanying Vajpayee on the journey were journalist Kuldip Nayar, poet Javed Akhtar, actor Dev Anand, singer Mahendra Kapoor and actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha.</p>

<p>Sinha also has a tale to tell about the late Dev Anand, who has legions of fans in Pakistan.</p>

<p>When the bus reached the other side of the border, the two prime ministers, Vajpayee and Nawaz Sharif, hugged each other.</p>

<p>Dev Anand, who stood next to them, started reminiscing about the time when he left Lahore for Mumbai.</p>

<p>"(he) would have carried on till we gently guided him away," Sinha says.</p>

<p>The prime minister's motorcade gets a free pass on the roads but a car carrying his hearing aid does not, he says, recounting the delay at the beginning of the journey in Delhi.</p>

<p>On the way to the airport in Delhi to board the flight to Amritsar, Vajpayee realised he had forgotten his hearing device at home.</p>

<p>"On our way to the airport, Vajpayee turned to me and nervously told me that he had left his hearing device at home. He had been checking his pockets and found them empty! Fortunately, we had cell phones by then, so I quickly rang back and asked for it to be sent pronto," Sinha writes.</p>

<p>"Fortunately for us, the PM's plane, operated by the air force, always has sufficient margin, a fact I knew by then. That knowledge gave us breathing space. We boarded but could not leave immediately since the car with the hearing aid was still on the way. But we were lucky that the traffic was light and the delay was a manageable twenty minutes," he adds.</p>

<p>The inaugural bus, 'Sada-e-sarhad', ran on February 19, 1999 between Delhi and Lahore, a distance of around 500 km, with three technical halts, taking a total of 14 hours.</p>

<p>Though Vajpayee was to travel all the way from Delhi, the plan was later modified and he boarded the bus at Amritsar airport.</p>

<p>Sinha, who is presently the director of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Policy Research and International Studies, MS University, Vadodara, also says Pakistan's then Prime Minister Sharif sent a word to his wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz to drive from Islamabad to Lahore when he noticed that Vajpayee's foster daughter Namita Kaul Bhattacharya was part of the delegation.</p>

<p>Namita Kaul's husband Ranjan Bhattacharya and their daughter Niharika were also part of the tour.</p>

<p>"This indicated how much Vajpayee was personally invested in the visit, raising the tenor of the occasion by a few octaves," Sinha writes &nbsp; The 'bus diplomacy', as it was called in later years, was hailed as the dawn of a new era in India-Pakistan relations but proved to be a short-lived thaw in the stormy relationship between the two countries.</p>

<p>Within months India and Pakistan were embroiled in the Kargil battle.</p>

<p>The over 300-page book, which consists of 10 chapters, is published by Penguin Random House India.</p>
