Delhi, the capital city of India, brims with history. It has been conquered by many a monarch, was lost in battles, destroyed by raiders, rebuilt by kings, looted by invaders and loved by poets. It has witnessed empires fall, dynasties crumble, poets lament over the loss, Sufis instil hope and faith among dwellers and in its bylanes, epochs traverse through centuries.

Amid the manicured gardens, laid-out pavillions and neo-classical buildings of Lutyen's Delhi, some unidentified tombs, broken colonnades or ruins of forts and palaces, littered across the city, seem to narrate forgotten tales from the yore. The city that attracts millions of travellers every year due to the historical marvels it boasts of, seems to have forgotten the ruins that lay nonchalantly amid the mushrooming neighbourhoods.

Tomb of Delhi's first empress 'Sultana Raziya'

Every Sunday, the Qutub complex welcomes hundreds of visitors who stare in astonishment at the beauty of the Qutub Minar and its calligraphic carvings. The tourists also visit the Tomb of Iltutmish, the third Mamluk king who ruled Delhi in the 13th century.

Almost an hour's drive from the Qutub Complex, in Old Delhi's Bulbuli Khana, lies the daughter of the Mamluk king and first empress of Delhi, with hardly any visitors. Navigating through the serpentines lanes, one suddenly finds an Archaeological Survey of India's (ASI) board, cramped in a corner, which reads "the grave is said to be of Sultana Razia, who succeeded her father Sultan Iltutmish".

The desolate grave of Delhi Sultanate's first and last woman emperor is a place lost in the oblivion of the time wheel. The mausoleum, which also includes a mosque, inhabits two tombs and it still remains a mystery which one belongs to the Sultana and who lies in the other grave.

While speaking to WION about the mystery over the tombs, former convenor INTACH Delhi chapter Swapna Liddle said, "The confusion may always remain. Sultana Raziya was buried in obscurity because her brother, who was her successor, did not want to give her much publicity."

"Therefore, her tomb is small and modest, and also easily overlooked," said the historian and author.

What adds to its obscurity is its very unpopular location and inaccessibility.

As heat wave conditions are rising in several Indian cities, state and central governments have issued guidelines for coping with the adverse weather. The circular issued states that all schools should ensure there is no student assembly during the afternoon shift. These guidelines come as summer vacations in Bengal government schools are preponed by three weeks. This means that the summer holidays for kids studying in govt-aided schools will begin from May 2 instead of May 24, a senior official on Wednesday said. According to the IMD, heatwave conditions will persist over West Bengal during the weekend. Here's everything you need to know about the guidelines issued by the Indian government.

In the statement, the government said, "As the daytime temperature in Delhi crosses more than 40 degrees Celsius during the summer season this is detrimental to the health of the children and adolescents studying in schools. The rise in temperature in NCR has led to the increased instance of heat-related illness."

In 2022, India reported one of the hottest summers with 203 heatwave days, the highest in history. The highest number of heatwave days was reported in Uttrakhand (28), Rajasthan (26), Haryana (24), Punjab (24), Delhi (17) and Uttar Pradesh (15).

What is a Heatwave?

A heatwave is a period of excessive heat or hot weather, which might be accompanied by humidity.

The IMD classifies a day as a heatwave day when the highest temperature reaches a minimum of 40 degrees Celsius and is at least 4.5 degrees highest than the average temperature.

Below are the guidelines issued by the Delhi government:

The first guideline stated, "All Govt/Govt aided/Pvt unaided schools recognised under the Directorate of Education will have to ensure availability of drinking water to students in the schools. Students should be given water breaks during classes."

No student assembly during the afternoon shift.

All schools must sensitise students to cover their heads during the daytime.

Schools must inform nearby hospitals or health facility care if any student suffers from heat-related illness.

On Wednesday, IMD predicted heatwave conditions in several states, saying that the temperature is expected to rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius in the upcoming days.

IMD Bhubaneswar in a statement said, "Maximum temperature (day temperature) very likely to gradually rise further by 2-3 degree Celsius at many places over the districts of Odisha during the next 2 days and no large change thereafter. Maximum temperature (day temperature) likely to be more than 40 degrees and above normal by 3-5 degrees at a few places over the districts of Odisha during next 4 days."

After the results of assembly polls of three northeastern states were declared on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the election results depict people's faith in democracy, adding that the Northeast is neither far from Delhi nor from ‘our heart’.

Prime Minister Modi received a warm welcome at BJP headquarters in the national capital. PM urged the workers gathered at the occasion to turn on the flashlight of their phones in honour of the people of the northeast. Addressing party workers at BJP headquarters, PM Modi said, "The Northeast is neither far from Delhi nor from our heart."

"The election results depict people's faith in democracy. I humbly thank the people of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya. These people have blessed the BJP and our allies. Besides, I congratulate the BJP workers of these three states. It is not easy to work in the northeast, and therefore a special thank is due to them," he said.

"Today's results are the outcome of the hard work of all BJP workers. Today's election and these election results have many messages for the country and for the world," the PM added.

In reference to earlier times, he said, "There was not much discussion in Delhi and other parts of the country when the results were out from the northeast region. The discussion was about the violence during the elections."

The PM said winning the hearts of the people of the Northeast is a big win for him and the time has come for peace, prosperity and development in the northeast region.

"By frequently visiting the Northeast, I won their heart. And it is a big win for me. I was satisfied that the people of the Northeast are no longer ignored. It is a time to create new history. When I visited the Northeast recently, someone congratulated me on the half-century. When I inquired about it, I was told that I had visited the Northeast 50 times," he said.

The PM said BJP gave a new model of politics in India. For BJP, the country and the countrymen come first. "Many political analysts are trying to understand the reason for the victory of the BJP. Some of our well-wishers want to know the reason. The reason is `Triveni`. It means the combination of three streams. The first power is the work of the BJP governments, the second one is the work style of the BJP and the last one is the BJP work," he said.

"Earlier in Tripura, there was a situation where even the flag of another party could not be hoisted. If someone tried to do it, he was made to bleed. What a big change we have seen in these elections this time," the PM added.

"Now we are seeing the Northeast moving in a new direction," he said.

Prime Minister said BJP government is committed to the empowerment of women. Through various flagship schemes, he said the government ensured the empowerment of the women of the Northeast.

Even after seven decades of independence, many villages of the northeast did not have electricity. Previous governments knew that it was a difficult task to electrify those villages, and therefore they turned a blind eye towards them, he stated.

Attacking the Congress party, PM Modi said, "Today`s results have exposed Congress`s thinking about the Northeast. Congress claimed that these are small states and insignificant. It is an insult to the mandate and the people of these states."

"At such a time, some people are aspiring to dig Modi`s grave. But wherever there is a chance, the lotus keeps on blooming...It keeps on blooming. Some people are engaged in identifying fanatics...They also do dishonesty with fanaticism. These fanatics say - `Mar jaa Modi...mar jaa Modi...Desh keh raha hai mat jaa Modi," Prime Minister added.

With the declaration of results for the Tripura Assembly polls on Thursday, BJP returned to power in the state by winning an absolute majority. According to the Election Commission of India, BJP won 32 seats with a vote share of around 39 per cent. Tipra Motha Party came second by winning 13 seats. Communist Party of India (Marxist) got 11 seats while Congress bagged three seats.

The Indigenous People`s Front of Tripura (IPFT) managed to open its account by winning one seat. The CPI(M) and the Congress, arch rivals in Kerala, came together in the Northeast this time in a bid to oust the BJP from power. The combined vote share of CPI(M) and Congress remained around 33 per cent.

Chief Minister Manik Saha defeated Congress` Asish Kumar Saha from the Town Bordowali seat by a margin of 1,257 votes.

In the 60-member Tripura assembly, the majority mark is 31. The BJP, which had never won a single seat in Tripura before 2018, stormed to power in the last election in alliance with IPFT and ousted the Left Front which had been in power in the border state for 35 years since 1978. After the results of assembly polls of three northeastern states were declared on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the election results depict people's faith in democracy, adding that the Northeast is neither far from Delhi nor from ‘our heart’.

Addressing party workers at BJP headquarters, PM Modi said, "The Northeast is neither far from Delhi nor from our heart." "The election results depict people's faith in democracy. The discussion was about the violence during the elections." The PM said winning the hearts of the people of the Northeast is a big win for him and the time has come for peace, prosperity and development in the northeast region. It is an insult to the mandate and the people of these states." "At such a time, some people are aspiring to dig Modi`s grave. The BJP contested 55 seats and its ally, IPFT, on six seats. But both allies had fielded candidates in the Ampinagar constituency in the Gomati district. The Left contested on 47 and Congress on 13 seats respectively. Of the total 47 seats, the CPM contested 43 seats while the Forward Bloc, Communist Party of India (CPI) and Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) contested one seat each.
It was the early hours of New Year's day. The world was soaked in fireworks but the sound of Delhi Sultanpuri horror was more deafening to those who witnessed the horrid incident. A 20-year-old woman riding her scooter was hit by a grey Baleno car. Unfortunately, she got stuck under the car and could not untangle herself. According to the victim's friend, Nidhi, the woman was shouting for help, help she never really got.

The victim, as per some reports, was dragged for about 12 kilometres from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala following the collision between her scooty and the car, which the police discovered later. During interrogation, the five men who were inside the car, under which the victim was stuck and lost her life, were arrested. They told police they had consumed alcohol while driving to Murthal (in the Sonipat district of the Indian state of Haryana) and back. The men said that they were unaware of someone being stuck under their vehicle.

Multiple CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced since the tragic incident. The major breakthrough in the case was when the police were able to trace the victim's friend Nidhi who was riding pillion with her. She said she was scared to say anything after the incident and just wanted to go back home safely after the gruesome happening that dark night. Rohit, the man who first alerted the police on New Year said he thought it was a dog or child that was caught under the car and was getting dragged.

The forensic report stated that victim suffered 40 injuries on her body while Nidhi survived with few minor injuries. The report revealed that traces of blood were found on the wheels and the base of the car. This confirmed that Anjali was indeed stuck beneath the car. It also stated that she was dragged from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala, and sustained as many as 40 injuries with her ‘brain matter’ missing.

The five accused in the case were produced in Rohini court through video conferencing due to security reasons, as per reports. EXPLAINED: What we know so far about the Delhi Sultanpuri horrific case

The police have refuted claims that the 20-year-old woman who died in Delhi in the early hours of Sunday in a horrific car incident was sexually assaulted by the five accused men. The woman died after a car struck her scooter and dragged her for approximately 4 kilometres, from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala. Five men who were inside the car have been detained.

The mother of the deceased has claimed that her daughter was sexually assaulted by the five accused males as she was discovered nude by the police. She said that her daughter told her she would return late from work. "I was waiting for her,” she said. “How can all her clothes come off like that? Police aren’t showing us her body properly. I want justice for my daughter,” she alleged.

"When my brother arrived at the police station, he was told about the death of my daughter. He informed me. My daughter was the only person earning in our family. She was fully clothed but not a single piece of clothing was there on her body, what kind of accident was it," said the deceased's mother.

The accusations, however, have been refuted by the Police. On Monday, the National Commission for Women (NCW) requested the Delhi Police Commissioner for a post-mortem examination of the body to determine if the woman had been molested or raped.

In a viral video of an incident that took place aboard an Istanbul-Delhi Indigo flight, an air hostess can be seen having a heated exchange with a passenger. Though the war of words happened some time back, it was only after a Twitter user, Gurpreet Singh Hans, shared video clips of the ugly spat that it went viral on social media.

In the video, it can be seen that one of the cabin crew members was serving food to passengers when the incident took place. The argument apparently was about the food being served. The passenger can be seen getting angry and yelling and screaming at the air hostess as he tells her to shut up after she requested him to speak politely with the crew.

Another cabin crew member who tried to intervene was also told by the air hostess that he should not speak to her like that as she is also an employee just like them.
