India: Another horrifying scene caught on camera in Delhi as man stabs victim over personal grudge

A centuries old tunnel-like structure was accidentally discovered at a children's museum in New Delhi this week. The discovery of the tunnel, reportedly dating back to the 13th or 14th century, was made during one of the redevelopment efforts undertaken by Archeological Survey of India, the chief government authority on archaeological research and preservation of cultural-historical monuments in India.

Owing to its millennia-old rich history, the present-day India is home to the sixth largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Officials cited by Hindustan Times said that only the opening of the arched structure is visible, and no further digging will be done. They further added that the structure will be kept intact as one of the displays at the children's museum.

"The museum upgradation work is going on under which more replicas will be added to the museum," Singh added.

Reports citing fire officials said that the incident took place at Fun Cinema auditorium number 3 during the screening of the Hollywood film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. The officials said that the fire appeared to have started in the projection room. The auditorium, according to them, is situated on the third floor of the structure.

Director of Delhi Fire Services Atul Garg said that a call about the fire was received at around 1.12 pm. “Since it was the question of fire in a cinema hall, we rushed seven fire tenders to the spot,” said Garg.

Senior fire officer B Prakash said it took around two minutes for the fire tenders to get to the cinema. “By the time we reached there, the cinema staffers had begun rescuing the audience members,” said Prakash. “The fire was found to be in the projector room, an isolated cabin cramped for space and dark and filled with machines, as is common in all projector rooms.”

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested Dinesh Gope, the self-styled supremo of the proscribed People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), an agency spokesperson said on Sunday. The PLFI, which mainly operates in Jharkhand, is a splinter group of the Maoists.

Gope alias “Kuldeep Yadav” alias “Badku”, who had more than 100 criminal cases against him and was carrying a reward of Rs 30 lakh on information leading to his arrest, was held in Delhi, the official said.

He had been absconding for almost two decades. The NIA Ranchi branch is investigating three cases against the PLFI, which was previously known as the Jharkhand Liberation Tigers (JLT), the official said.

According to the NIA, the PLFI is responsible for hundreds of terror incidents in Jharkhand.

“More than 102 criminal cases are registered against Gope in Jharkhand, Bihar and Odisha. Most of these cases relate to murder, abduction, threat, extortion, and raising funds for the PLFI, a militant Maoist outfit formed in 2007 in Jharkhand and a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist),” the spokesperson said.

The official said the NIA had declared a reward of Rs 5 lakh for leads on Gope, in addition to the reward of Rs 25 lakh announced by the Jharkhand government.

On February 3 last year, an encounter had taken place between a Gope-led PLFI squad and security personnel in a forested area under Gudri Police station of West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.

Several rounds were fired in the encounter before the rebels sneaked into the forest and Gope managed to escape, the official said, adding he had been taking shelter at different places while making all efforts to re-establish the PLFI’s stronghold in Jharkhand.

“Gope used to extort money and execute attacks through his PLFI team members to terrorise businessmen, contractors and the public at large,” the spokesperson said.

The official said the accused, along with his associates, was involved in depositing the demonetised currency notes in a bank account and later collected them through extortion.

India: Delhi's iconic Jama Masjid may soon get seminal revamp

A Delhi court framed murder charges against Aftab Amin Poonawala on Tuesday in the gruesome killing of a 27-year-old woman, Shraddha Walkar, in the heart of India's capital city Delhi. He has also been accused of causing the disappearance of evidence.

The accused, however, has denied the charges and claimed a trial in the matter.

Additional Sessions Judge Manisha Khurana Kakkar of Saket Courts has framed charges under Sections 302 (Murder) and 201 (Disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Poonawala.

"Prima facie case of Section 302 is made out and charges will be framed," ASJ Khurana said.

The judge further added that to screen himself from punishment, Poonawala cut Walkar's body and threw it at different places, therefore, committing an offence under Section 201 of IPC.

"Do you plead guilty or claim trial," the court asked to which Poonawala
said, "I don't plead guilty and will face the trial."

Poonawala pleaded not guilty to Walker's murder and the matter has now been set for trial and has been listed for the recording of prosecution evidence on June 1.

Advocate Akshay Bhandari argued that the accused cannot be charged together for the offence of murder and of the destruction of evidence and that these two charges can be framed in alternate.

The accused can't be charged for both offences together as it would prejudice his right, the counsel argued.

Shraddha Walkar's audio clip played in court

In the month of March, more gory details had come to surface in the Shraddha Walkar murder case where special public prosecutor Amit Prasad, appearing on behalf of the state, played an audio clip of hers in a Delhi court that unveiled Walkar's deep-seated fears she had in her relationship with boyfriend, Aftab Poonawala.

Prosecutor Prasad played an audio clip reportedly from an application called Practo. It is an application where people connect with doctors and experts for consultations and seek help.

Walkar, in the audio clip, could be heard saying, "Whenever I start ranting about my anger, if he is somewhere around, anywhere in Vasai (near Mumbai), anywhere around me in this…city, he will find me, he will hunt me down, he will try to kill me, that's… the problem," reported PTI news agency quoting Walkar purportedly as saying in the audio clip.

“I don't know (how) many times he tried to kill me -- this is not the first time he tried to kill me... The way he grabbed my neck, I blacked out. I was unable to breathe for 30 seconds... Thankfully I was able to defend myself by pulling his hair," she added.

"Do you plead guilty or claim trial," the court asked to which Poonawala said, "I don't plead guilty and will face the trial." Poonawala pleaded not guilty to Walker's murder and the matter has now been set for trial and has been listed for the recording of prosecution evidence on June 1. Advocate Akshay Bhandari argued that the accused cannot be charged together for the offence of murder and of the destruction of evidence and that these two charges can be framed in alternate. The accused can't be charged for both offences together as it would prejudice his right, the counsel argued. Shraddha Walkar's audio clip played in court In the month of March, more gory details had come to surface in the Shraddha Walkar murder case where special public prosecutor Amit Prasad, appearing on behalf of the state, played an audio clip of hers in a Delhi court that unveiled Walkar's deep-seated fears she had in her relationship with boyfriend, Aftab Poonawala.
Since its inception in 2001, the SCO has mostly talked about regional security and a fight against separatism and terrorism, often associated with religious extremism. But it is precisely these issues that have kept India and Pakistan apart for decades.
There have been ups and downs since then, mostly downs.

We need to push the cameras of our minds back to 1964 when Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru died and Lal Bahadur Shastri took over. Bilawal's grandfather Zulfikar Ali Bhutto visited Delhi then as Pakistan's 36-year-old foreign minister to attend Nehru's funeral. The older Bhutto's American biographer Stanley Wolpert says that then-young Bhutto mistook the diminutive Shastri for a weakling and decided to push his country's military ruler Ayub Khan to invade Kashmir in 1965.

Pakistan lost the war badly. Bhutto resigned and rose in protest against the army ruler (much like Imran Khan did as PM recently) after joining the general in negotiating a peace treaty with Shastri, who died tragically and mysteriously in Tashkent where the treaty was signed.
We can always debate if demagogic politics is an escape from bad economics or if economic crises are caused by bad politics.
