Delhi has tightened restrictions on movement of vehicles and switched schools to online classes as air quality level worsen to over 450 in several parts of the national capital with air quality staying in the severe category for the last 5 days the city has implemented stage 4 restrictions under GRAP which is the Graded Response Action Plan it starts from today. Watch in for more details!

Delhi Air Pollution: Delhi Implements Stage 4 Measures under GRAP

Delhi Air Pollution: Physical Classes Discontinued For All Except Classes 10 & 12

With Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) staying at 'severe' level for two days in a row, the Delhi government has decided to implement more stringent pollution control measures under Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). These new actions will be effective from 8:00 AM&nbsp;on Friday (November 15).

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) made the decision to elevate the response to GRAP Stage 3 due to Delhi's AQI consistently surpassing 400, accompanied by heavy smog that has reduced visibility to nearly zero.

<h2>What is GRAP?</h2>

The Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) is a set of measures aimed at managing air pollution in Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR). Stage 3 of GRAP comes into effect when the AQI reaches ‘severe’ levels.

<h2>Restrictions under GRAP Stage 3</h2>

Under Stage 3, construction and demolition activities will be suspended, along with all non-essential mining. Interstate buses that are not electric, CNG, or compliant with BS-VI standards will be restricted entry. There will also be increased water sprinkling on major roads to control dust.

Delhi CM Atishi posted on X, "Due to rising pollution levels, all primary schools in Delhi will be shifting to online classes, until further directions."

Use of diesel generators will be limited to emergencies. To discourage private vehicle use, parking fees will be raised, among other measures.

GRAP is enforced in four stages:

<ul>
	<li>Stage I for ‘Poor’ AQI (201-300)</li>
	<li>Stage II for ‘Very Poor’ AQI (301-400)</li>
	<li>Stage III for ‘Severe’ AQI (401-450)</li>
	<li>Stage IV for ‘Severe Plus’ AQI (above 450)</li>
</ul>

Stage II of GRAP was already in place in Delhi since October, following AQI levels exceeding 300.

Earlier on Thursday, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai had said GRAP-3 would not be implemented.

"For the last two days, for the first time this season, AQI has gone above 400 in Delhi. Many people have questions in their minds about why the AQI, which was in the 'poor' or 'very poor' category since October 14, suddenly went into the 'severe' category," he said.

"Meteorologists have reported that due to snowfall in the mountains, a drop in the temperature of Delhi has been recorded. Due to this, dry conditions have been created in the morning and evening in the entirety of north India," he added.

Stricter GRAP-III pollution curbs imposed as Delhi chokes amid ‘severe’ air quality

India's capital Delhi is under a dense blanket of smog with pollution&nbsp;reaching dangerous levels. At 8 am on Thursday (Nov 14), the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 428, marking a “severe” level of pollution, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Locals are reporting breathing difficulties, eye irritation, and reduced visibility due to the smog.

<h2>Will GRAP 3 be enforced?</h2>

As per reports, despite the alarming levels of pollution, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has opted against enforcing Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). If enforced, GRAP 3 would have included measures like halting in-person classes for primary schools and a blanket ban on construction activities.

Prolonged exposure to high pollution concentrations can lead to several health concerns, including some chronic illnesses in the lungs and brain.&nbsp;

Here's a list of AQI levels in various Delhi areas on Monday as of 8:00 am:

Anand Vihar - 627 (hazardous)

Alipur - 388 (hazardous)

Punjabi Bagh - 319 (hazardous)

Narela - 372 (hazardous)

RK Puram - 268 (very poor)

Bawana - 368 (hazardous)

ITI Shahdra - 408 (hazardous)

After Diwali, On Friday (Nov 1), Delhi’s AQI was recorded worst globally at 359, followed by Lahore in Pakistan (AQI 217), Beijing in China (AQI 182) and Dhaka in Bangladesh (AQI 174).&nbsp;

To tackle the deteriorating situation in the capital, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said the Atishi government has deployed around 200 mobile anti-smog guns to combat dust pollution.

Speaking to ANI on Saturday, Gopal Rai said that the Delhi government is continuously working on the ground to combat the rising pollution levels.

The 200 anti-smog guns, deployed across the national capital, operate in three shifts of eight hours each, spraying water in every assembly constituency to help control dust levels.

"Whether it is dust pollution, vehicle pollution or biomass burning, our teams are continuously working on targeting these three on the ground," Rai said further.

However, stubble burning only accounted for 15 per cent of Delhi’s pollution on Saturday (Nov 2), which is a substantial drop from Friday’s figure of over 35 per cent. This reduction indicates that other factors are significantly influencing Delhi's air quality.

Delhi air at season's worst as AQI drops to 'severe' post-Diwali

<blockquote>
"Delhi’s air is thick with tradition... and a government’s lack of ambition."
</blockquote>

Another rant on post-Diwali pollution on the internet! I know you have had enough, and so have I. &nbsp;

On Thursday night, sitting on my terrace, I was watching fireworks and saw a fog of broken promises and burned paper.&nbsp;

For many, Diwali is all about light, family and celebration. But for people like me, who struggle for a clean breath in this city, it was a sleepless night.

My generation, the so-called 'Gen-Z', was raised with an eco-consciousness mindset. But now, we simply watch each festival multiplying as a countdown to climate catastrophe.

<h2>Data Speaks Louder (When You Listen)</h2>

Let’s not skip the numbers.

On the morning of November 1, a day after Diwali, Delhi's air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 359. On the night, it was recorded around 500, according to the real-time data provided by the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR).&nbsp;

In 2023, Delhi's AQI was recorded as high as 301 on Diwali, according to the data published by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC).

<h2>Noise of Ignorance</h2>

While growing up, I was taught Diwali is a "festival of lights," but being born and brought up in Delhi, it's more a "Festival of Frights" for me. Every year, I witness my neighbourhood erupting with crackers and turning homes into gas chambers.&nbsp;

<h2>Government That Bans For Headlines</h2>

"Nothing Hindu-Muslim in ban on firecrackers in Delhi," said the chief of Delhi's ruling party Arvind Kejriwal on October 30, six years after the Supreme Court of India imposed a ban on all conventional crackers in Delhi-NCR.&nbsp;

He said the so-called ban on crackers was necessary for protecting people from pollution and that there was no 'Hindu-Muslim' angle to it.

Kejriwal urged the people of Delhi to celebrate Diwali by lighting diya (Earthen lamps), instead of bursting firecrackers that cause pollution.

But, after making headlines on national and international levels, did the ruling party cross-check if the instructions were being followed?&nbsp;

No, they certainly didn't. There was no patrol, no checks, only the silence of those in power. It's not hard for one to feel that the ban was for the optics, just for the international media so they can defend themselves saying they "tried."

But let’s be honest: a ban without enforcement is just another noise.&nbsp;

The government’s policies lack teeth, and the reality couldn’t be more obvious. A report by the Times of India published on October 27 revealed that buying a packet of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR is as easy as buying a packet of milk.&nbsp;

<h2>Generation Z: aware but defeated?</h2>

My generation knows what's at stake. We see the data on pollution, and we see the "severe" AQIs, every year.&nbsp;

We grew up learning lessons on recycling, eating eco-friendly food. But we are powerless, in front of a culture that's reluctant to change and a government that refuses to enforce its own rules.&nbsp;

What's stopping us from not giving a single thought about an entire population suffering because of something we do "just for fun?" Tradition or habit? No idea! Because when it comes to inhaling toxic air, that distinction doesn’t matter.

<h2>Need for real change</h2>

It's easy to play the blame game. After all, tradition is a powerful thing. But we are those who claim to be the generation of change. If we don't stand up, if we don't speak up, who will?&nbsp;

I am not asking people to forgo Diwali traditions. But what impact will it create if we opt for alternatives that don't fill our lungs with soot? I think, huge.&nbsp;

<h2>'Green' to go?</h2>

Mohandas Pai, the former CFO of Infosys and the chairman of Aarin Capital Partners in an interview with Wion, suggested that opting for green crackers could be a solution to post-Diwali pollution.&nbsp;

But are "green crackers" feasible?

The Times of India report said the green firecrackers, which are produced without barium, are almost impossible to distinguish from normal ones. One can have the hardest time identifying them and can be easily misled.

<h2>What now?</h2>

How about simply celebrating the festival without explosions? How about celebrating Diwali the actual way it was celebrated for the first time in Ayodhya? Let's stick to the tradition. Let's speak up loud enough to be heard over the blasts of ignorance.

When crackers speak louder than laws, what's the Gen Z doing?

Only seven countries worldwide are meeting the international air quality standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO) when it comes to airborne particles, known as PM2.5, according to a report by Swiss company&nbsp;IQAir.&nbsp;

The deterioration of air pollution in certain regions is attributed to an uptick in economic activities and the harmful effects of smoke from wildfires.

Out of 134 countries and regions examined in the report, only Australia, Estonia, Finland, Grenada, Iceland, Mauritius, and New Zealand adhere to the WHO guideline limit for tiny airborne particles, known as PM2.5.

PM2.5 is the fine particulate matter emitted by vehicles, industries, and other sources. PM 2.5 particles, smaller than the width of a human hair, pose severe health risks when inhaled, contributing to various health problems and fatalities.

How to minimise the impact of&nbsp;air pollution</a>

While overall air quality has improved compared to previous centuries, certain areas still grapple with hazardous pollution levels.

Pakistan tops the list as the most polluted country, with PM2.5 levels exceeding the WHO standard by over 14 times.

Following Pakistan, India, Tajikistan, and Burkina Faso are among the most affected nations.

Even in affluent and rapidly developing countries, efforts to mitigate air pollution face challenges.

Canada, historically known for clean air, experienced heightened PM2.5 levels due to unprecedented wildfires, while China's progress in air quality improvement was hindered by economic resurgence following the COVID-19 pandemic.

<h2>Delhi named world's&nbsp;most polluted capital</h2>

The Indian capital city&nbsp;New Delhi&nbsp;once again gained the title of being&nbsp;the most polluted capital city in the world last year, according to an IQAir report.&nbsp;

New Delhi's&nbsp;annual population-weighted PM2.5&nbsp;concentration in 2023 stood at&nbsp;92.7µg/m3 reportedly making it the&nbsp;world’s most polluted national capital.

According to the report, the second most polluted capital was Dhaka (80.2 µg/m3), followed by a distinct third&nbsp;Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso with&nbsp;46.6µg/m3.&nbsp;

<h2>Experts&nbsp;concerned&nbsp;</h2>

Only seven countries worldwide are meeting the international air quality standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO) when it comes to airborne particles, known as PM2.

Only seven countries worldwide are meeting the international air quality standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO) when it comes to airborne particles, known as PM2.5, according to a report by Swiss company IQAir. Also read: Breathing easier! How to minimise the impact of air pollution While overall air quality has improved compared to previous centuries, certain areas still grapple with hazardous pollution levels. Delhi named world's most polluted capital The Indian capital city New Delhi once again gained the title of being the most polluted capital city in the world last year, according to an IQAir report. New Delhi's annual population-weighted PM2.5 concentration in 2023 stood at 92.7µg/m3 reportedly making it the world’s most polluted national capital. According to the report, the second most polluted capital was Dhaka (80.2 µg/m3), followed by a distinct third Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso with 46.6µg/m3. As Delhi's air quality continues to leave the people gasping for breath, have you wondered how toxic air impacts your mental health? Molly Gambhir tells you.

Gravitas: How does toxic air impact your mental health?

Air pollution is a critical global issue, significantly impacting human health. India faces an especially severe situation, with its cities often ranking among the world’s most polluted. According to a report by Swiss technology company IQAir, India, on average, ranked eighth in terms of air pollution, with a majority of the 15 most polluted cities worldwide being located within its borders. A closer examination of the data highlights a troubling rise in PM2.5 pollution levels.

In 2020, India recorded PM2.5 levels at 56.2 μg/m3. However, within just one year, these levels surged to 58.7 μg/m3 in 2021, surpassing WHO guidelines by over tenfold. The consequences of this alarming PM2.5 increase are profound. If this trend persists, the average Indian resident is projected to lose an astonishing 5.3 years of life expectancy, according to a recent report by the Air Quality Life Index (AQLI).

<h2>Lung Health and Air Pollution</h2>

Our lungs stand out as one of the organs most susceptible to the impacts of air pollution. Microscopic PM2.5 particles possess the ability to circumvent our body’s natural defences and penetrate the delicate air sacs in our lungs. In this vulnerable state, they can set off a series of detrimental effects. Persistent exposure to elevated levels of PM2.5 has been associated with various lung conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and bronchitis. Moreover, it significantly heightens the likelihood of developing lung cancer.

Air pollution doesn’t just affect those with pre-existing lung conditions. Even individuals with healthy lungs are at risk. Prolonged exposure to polluted air can cause lung function to decline, making it harder for the body to get the oxygen it needs. This can lead to reduced physical stamina and can negatively impact overall quality of life. Moreover, air pollution isn’t limited to lung health; it has far-reaching consequences for the entire body. Studies have shown that it can contribute to heart disease, stroke, and even cognitive decline. The message is unequivocal: air pollution constitutes a pressing public health crisis demanding immediate attention.

<h2>Minimising the Impact of Air Pollution on Lung Health</h2>

While it might seem daunting to address the air pollution crisis, there are several strategies individuals and communities can adopt to minimise its impact on lung health.

Air Quality Awareness: To safeguard your lung health, the initial step is to stay informed about air quality in your vicinity. You can achieve this by using air quality monitoring apps and websites to track PM2.5 levels. When levels are elevated, it’s essential to take precautionary measures. This awareness enables individuals to make informed choices regarding outdoor activities and preventive actions.

Limit Outdoor Activities: During periods of poor air quality, especially on smoggy days or during high-pollution seasons, it’s advisable to restrict outdoor activities, especially strenuous exercise. If you need to venture outside, consider wearing a mask designed to filter out fine particulate matter. This simple precaution can substantially decrease your exposure to harmful pollutants in adverse conditions.

Indoor Air Quality: Invest in air purifiers for your home to ensure clean indoor air. Make sure your living space is well-ventilated and consider using indoor plants known for their air-purifying qualities. Creating a healthy indoor environment is vital, especially when outdoor air quality is compromised.

Reduce Personal Emissions: Make eco-friendly choices in your daily life, such as using public transportation, carpooling, or driving electric vehicles to reduce personal emissions. Reducing your carbon footprint can contribute to overall air quality improvement. By adopting sustainable transportation practices, you not only protect your health but also contribute to a cleaner environment for everyone.

Advocate for Change: Join or support organisations and initiatives that work towards improving air quality and reducing pollution. Advocate for stricter regulations and policies that limit industrial emissions and promote cleaner energy sources. Active participation in such initiatives can drive meaningful change and hold industries accountable for their environmental impact.

Healthier Lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can fortify lung health. This encompasses a balanced diet, consistent exercise, and abstaining from smoking, all of which enable your body to better combat the impacts of pollution. A strong, healthy body is more resilient to the harmful effects of air pollution, making lifestyle choices a crucial aspect of lung health protection.

Community Action: Work with your community to raise awareness and address local pollution sources. Engage with your local government to advocate for policies that improve air quality. Collaborative community action is a potent force for change, as it not only spreads awareness but also exerts pressure on local authorities to take concrete steps towards cleaner air.

Get Regular Checkups:&nbsp;Regular checkups are extremely necessary since they help prevent diseases, even when you are feeling well. This is particularly true for lung disease, which often goes undetected until it is serious. During a check-up, your healthcare provider will listen to your breathing and will suggest some X-ray scans or tests. Watch out for some common signs and symptoms of lung diseases since it is best to catch a condition in its earliest stages.&nbsp;

Breathing easier! How to minimise the impact of air pollution on lung health

Delhi’s air quality was recorded in the ‘very poor’ category as the residents openly flouted the Supreme Court’s order on firecrackers.

On Monday (Nov 13), a thick smog blanketed the entire city, reversing the relief brought out by rains the previous day that had significantly improved the air quality in the national capital.

Addressing the reporters, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi environment minister Gopal Rai blamed the neighbouring BJP-ruling states Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, claiming that their lax attitude towards the firecracker ban allowed people to openly flout the rules.

<h2>'BJP-ruled UP, Haryana responsible'&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

“There is a ban on the production, storage and sale of firecrackers in Delhi. The firecrackers were brought to Delhi from UP and Haryana. The police of Delhi, Haryana and UP are under the control of BJP and no common man can easily supply the firecrackers amid the monitoring of these three police forces. Some specific people have done this,"&nbsp;Rai said.

The environment minister also announced that the anti-pollution measures under GRAP IV regulations will remain enforced in Delhi until the next order of CAQM (Commission for Air Quality Management).

Air pollution increases in Delhi | Artificial rain - proposed by IIT Kanpur - likely to be attempted

Delhi India's political pulse in one of the world's most rapidly rising metropolises is grappling with the crisis that spotlights the urgency of addressing climate goals. The city's air quality has plummeted below acceptable standards in recent days landing it on the global list of the most polluted cities in the world. But what's the economic role of this predicament take a look.

Delhi AQI: Delhi chokes as air quality worsens, AQI stands over 400

For the past week, Delhi has been suffering from its worst air pollution with air quality index (AQI) hitting as high as 400 and even 999 in some areas. To combat deteriorating air quality in Delhi-NCR, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage III of GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) on Nov 2.&nbsp;

Stage III of GRAP is operationalised when the AQI stands in the ‘severe’ category from 401-450. Later, when AQI crossed 450-mark, the CAQM invoked an 8-point action plan as per Stage-IV of the GRAP on Monday in the entire Delhi-NCR region.&nbsp;

<h2>What is GRAP and when is it&nbsp;imposed?</h2>

GRAP is a set of emergency action plans which is implemented in four stages depending upon the severity of the air pollution that is determined by the air quality index (AQI).&nbsp;

In 2016, a Supreme Court ruling in the case of MC Mehta vs Union of India case addressed the air quality in the Delhi-NCR region and ordered the creation of GRAP with different AQI categories from Moderate to Severe.

Following the SC ruling, the Centre decided to set up the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in NCR and adjoining regions. CQAM was set up as a statutory body which works in accordance with other States to develop and carry out plans for the prevention and management of air pollution in Delhi-NCR.&nbsp;

The plan was formally announced in 2017 by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change to keep PM 10 and PM 2.5 concentrations from exceeding the “moderate” national AQI threshold.

<h2>Stages in GRAP</h2>

The GRAP for Delhi-NCR and neighbouring areas are divided into four stages-

Stage 1- “poor” AQI ranging between 201 and 300

In this stage, the government ensures proper implementation of guidelines on dust mitigation measures and sound environmental management of Construction and Demolition (C&amp;D) wastes.

Stage 2- “very poor” AQI of 301-400

Stage II necessitates a ban on diesel generators, the use of coal or firewood in hotels, restaurants, and open eateries, increased parking fees, and increased bus and metro frequency.

Stage 3- “severe” AQI of 401-450

Under this stage, the government imposes a strict ban on construction and demolition activities, hot mix plants, brick kilns, and stone crushers.

Stage 4- “severe plus” AQI of more than 450

This stage ensures the stopping of trucks in Delhi except for LNG/CNG trucks and those involved in essential services. It also imposes a ban on Delhi-registered diesel-operated Medium Goods Vehicles (MGVs) and Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) and also empowers authorities to take a decision on discontinuing physical classes even for classes VI-IX, class XI and conduct classes in an online mode.

Delhi poor AQI: What is GRAP and its stages? Indian capital's pollution control plan

Delhi has witnessed a slight improvement in air quality, transitioning to the 'very poor' category following increased surface winds on Monday. This slight positive shift happens after five consecutive days of air quality being in the ‘severe’ category.

At 7 am today (Nov 7), the average 24-hour Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 395 (very poor), in contrast to the 421 (severe) recorded at 4 pm on Monday (Nov 6). The heightened surface winds, combined with measures enacted under stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), have played a role in enhancing&nbsp;air quality in the national capital.

Contributing factors

Officials project wind speeds of 8-10 km/hr in the afternoon, facilitating further dispersion of pollutants. The alteration in wind direction from northwesterly to southeasterly on Monday, influenced by a western disturbance affecting northwest India between November 7 to10, has been a significant contributing factor. According to an IMD official, this change, coupled with variable wind direction, is expected to gradually increase wind speeds from Tuesday afternoon.

Measures taken by the Delhi government&nbsp;

The AQI exceeded 400 for the first time this season last Thursday, maintaining a 'severe' status since 5 pm until now. In response to the escalating air quality concerns, the Delhi government has reinstated the odd-even scheme from November 13 to 20, as announced after an emergency meeting led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The scheme aims to mitigate vehicular emissions, particularly post-Diwali on November 12. Additionally, physical classes for all grades, excluding classes 10 and 12, have been suspended until November 10, with the provision for online classes during this period. A decision on permitting 50% of government employees to work from home will be determined at a later stage.

Real-time IMD data reveals improved visibility, recorded at approximately 1,100 meters at 7 am today, compared to 400 metres at the same time on Monday. The air quality had reached its peak at 454 on Sunday at 4 pm, prompting the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to invoke stage 4 of GRAP.&nbsp;

Stage 4 restrictions centre on diesel vehicles, encompassing a ban on the entry of non-BS-VI diesel light commercial vehicles from outside Delhi. Moreover, trucks are barred from entering Delhi, and the movement of diesel Medium Goods Vehicles (MGV) and heavy goods vehicles (HGV) is restricted. Linear construction projects have also been temporarily halted under this category.

Delhi Air Pollution: Delhi's AQI witnesses mild improvement, shifts to ‘very poor’ category

Living in Delhi-NCR, considered&nbsp;vibrant and bustling, comes with its own set of challenges, one of which is coping with high levels of air pollution. Among the many health concerns associated with this issue, one often overlooked aspect is the well-being of your eyes. The harmful pollutants in the air can take a toll on your health, including your precious eyesight. However, with some proactive measures and good habits, you can protect and care for your precious eyesight amid the severe pollution.&nbsp;

Here are some expert-approved tips for maintaining healthy vision in Delhi-NCR.

Use Eye Protection: When the air quality is poor, consider wearing protective eyewear, such as wrap-around goggles or safety glasses, to shield your eyes from dust and pollutants. This can prevent irritation and redness.

Maintain Good Indoor Air Quality: Use air purifiers with HEPA filters in your home and workplace to reduce indoor air pollutants. Clean air indoors can help alleviate eye discomfort caused by external pollution.

Practice the 20-20-20 Rule: If you work on a computer or stare at screens for extended periods, follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and focus on an object 20 feet away. This reduces eye strain and helps relax your eye muscles.

Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes: If your eyes itch or feel irritated, resist the urge to rub them. Instead, rinse your eyes with clean, cold water or use lubricating eye drops recommended by an eye specialist.

Regular Eye Checkups: Schedule regular eye examinations with an optometrist or ophthalmologist to monitor your eye health. Early detection of issues like glaucoma or cataracts can lead to better treatment outcomes.

Maintain a Balanced Diet: Eat a diet rich in vitamins and nutrients that promote eye health, such as leafy greens, carrots, fish, and nuts. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish can help reduce the risk of dry eyes.

Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration is essential for maintaining the health of your eyes. Dry eyes can be a common issue due to the pollution and dry climate in the region. Drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day to keep your eyes moist and comfortable.

Stay Informed: Keep an eye on air quality reports and pollution levels in your area. On days with poor air quality, take extra precautions to protect your eyes and overall health.

Your eyes are a precious gift, and it's crucial to take steps to safeguard them, especially in places like Delhi and NCR. By following these tips and making eye care a priority, you can maintain healthy vision and enjoy clear eyesight for years to come, even in the face of environmental challenges. Remember, regular check-ups and proactive measures can go a long way in protecting your eyes from pollution-related issues.

ODI World Cup 2023: Bangladesh cancel training session ahead of Sri Lanka clash due to poor AQI in Delhi

People in New Delhi woke up to a thick layer of toxic haze on Friday, and some schools were ordered to be shut for two days as the air quality index (AQI) entered the "severe" category in several parts of the Indian capital. A filthy smog forms over Delhi every winter as cold, heavy air traps construction dust, vehicle emissions and smoke from crop stubble burning in neighbouring states, causing a surge in respiratory illnesses among the city's 20 million people.

Delhi AQI: Air pollution in India's New Delhi turns 'severe', Delhi AQI stands at 468

The air quality in the national capital took a nosedive on Friday morning, slipping into the 'Very Poor' category as the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 600, up from 302 recorded on Sunday afternoon, according to data provided by SAFAR-India.

Delhi Air Quality: Parts of Delhi record AQI above 600; stubble burning major reason for pollution

A thick 'apocalyptic haze' engulfed India’s capital Delhi for the third consecutive day on Thursday (Nov 2), with air quality deteriorating to ‘hazardous’ level and residents gasping for fresh air.

Delhi’s Anand Vihar region registered the highest level of air pollution, with the air quality index (AQI) reaching 999. On average, Delhi’s air quality was above 500, according to weather agency aqicn.org.

AQI between 0-50 is considered healthy, while a value over 300 represents hazardous air quality.

India uses AQI as a yardstick to determine how bad the pollution is across the city. The higher the AQI value, the greater the level of air pollution and the greater the health concern.

<h2>Scientists raise alarm&nbsp;</h2>

Scientists have warned that the pollution levels in Delhi and nearby regions would continue to spike for the next two weeks.

Health experts have also raised alarm saying that the rise in air pollution might accentuate respiratory and asthma problems, especially among the children and elderly.

"We are recording a surge in the number of irritative bronchitis infections. It is recommended that people suffering from respiratory issues such as chronic bronchitis and asthma take their medicines regularly and do not go out in the open unless absolutely necessary," Jugal Kishore, the head of the medicine department at Safdarjung Hospital, told PTI news agency.

<h2>Govt panel bans non-essential construction&nbsp;</h2>

Meanwhile, a central pollution panel on Thursday banned non-essential construction activity and the entry of diesel trucks into the capital city.

The measures were adopted as part of the Stage III Graded Action Response Plan, which was framed to tackle the annual surge in pollution in the capital and the surrounding areas.

During a meeting, the committee noted that the pollution was expected to deteriorate further because of the "highly unfavourable meteorological and climatic conditions".

Much of north India often experiences bad air quality during the winter months on account of farmers burning paddy straws and due to the cold temperatures allowing for the trapping of pollutants near the ground, which is also known as temperature inversions.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Sunday (Oct 30) requested the Centre to prohibit plying of&nbsp;buses operating with poor-quality diesel in the NCR areas of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.&nbsp;

"Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had earlier announced a 15-point winter action plan to curb the pollution caused by vehicles, biomass burning, dust, etc. Now this winter action plan is being implemented on the ground one by one to reduce the pollution in the national capital," Rai said while speaking to the news agency ANI.

India: Air quality continues to worsen in Delhi despite govt's winter action plan

India's national capital Delhi is bracing for the smog in winters in coming two months, and considering this CM Arvind Kejriwal has come up with a 15 points plan to deal with air pollution. Kejriwal said 13 hotspots have been identified across the city where pollution level is high and an action plan is made for each. Thirteen special teams have been also formed.&nbsp;

Some of the hotspots are Anand Vihar, Wazirabad, Vivek Vihar, Wazirpur, Ashok Vihar, Dwarka, Jahangirpuri, Rohini, Bawana, Narela, and Mundka.&nbsp;

"To reduce dust pollution, 591 teams have been formed to monitor construction sites. Sites more than 500 square metres will have to register on the web portal and it will be mandatory for sites more than 5000 square metres to install anti-smog guns," the chief minister added.

<h2>Vehicle pollution to be measured</h2>

To curb pollution caused by petrol and diesel vehicles, 385 teams have been formed which will operate 530 water sprinkling vehicles and 258 anti-smog guns on the roads in winter.

Pollution related complaints can be made on the Green Delhi app and about 70,000 complaints have been filed already, of which 90 per cent have been dealt with, Kejriwal added. A website has also been created to track the real-time pollution levels.
