A study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, released on Friday, based on data from 185 countries and territories collected from December 8, 2020, to December 8, 2021, shows that Covid vaccines prevented nearly 20 million deaths in the first year after they were introduced, as reported by AFP.

It is the first attempt to estimate the number of deaths prevented directly and indirectly as a result of Covid-19 vaccinations. It found that 19.8 million deaths were prevented out of a potential 31.4 million deaths that would have occurred if no vaccines were available.

It was a 63 per cent reduction, the study found. The study used official figures or estimates when official data was not available for deaths from Covid, as well as total excess deaths from each country. These analyses were compared with a hypothetical alternative scenario in which no vaccine was administered.

The model accounted for variation in vaccination rates across countries, as well as differences in vaccine effectiveness based on the types of vaccines known to have been primarily used in each country.

The study found that high- and middle-income countries accounted for the largest number of deaths averted, 12.2 million out of 19.8 million, reflecting inequalities in access to vaccines worldwide.

Covid has officially killed more than 6.3 million people globally, according to the WHO. Nearly 600,000 additional deaths could have been prevented if the World Health Organization's (WHO) goal of vaccinating 40 per cent of each country's population by the end of 2021 had been met, it concluded.

As reported by AFP, lead study author Oliver Watson of Imperial College London said, "Millions of lives have probably been saved by making vaccines available to people around the world."

"We could have done more," he said.

Covid vaccines prevented nearly 20 million deaths in first year: Report

The United States is set to announce a new policy requiring cigarette producers to reduce nicotine to non-addictive levels, a move that would deal a powerful blow to the tobacco industry, as reported by AFP on Tuesday.

If successful, the policy could save millions of lives by the end of the century, and shape a future where cigarettes are no longer responsible for addiction and debilitating diseases.

Nicotine is the "feel good" chemical that hooks millions to tobacco products. Thousands of other chemicals contained in tobacco and its smoke are responsible for diseases such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes and more.

Though smoking is less prevalent in the United States than in Europe and has been declining for years, it is still responsible for 480,000 deaths a year in the country, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Some 13.7 per cent of all US adults are current cigarette smokers, according to CDC data.

Reducing the nicotine content of cigarettes has been a topic under discussion for years among US authorities.

Former FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb announced in 2017 that he wanted to move forward on the issue and funded a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2018 that found "reduced-nicotine cigarettes versus standard-nicotine cigarettes reduced nicotine exposure and dependence and the number of cigarettes smoked," as reported by AFP.

The FDA found that if the policy were enacted in 2020, it would prevent eight million premature deaths from tobacco by 2100.

The total economic cost of smoking is more than $300 billion a year, according to the CDC, including more than $225 billion in direct medical care for adults, and more than $156 billion in lost productivity due to premature death and exposure to secondhand smoke.

United States to drastically reduce nicotine content in cigarettes to reduce premature deaths: Reports

The ability to balance on one leg can give valuable insights about one’s health at later stages of life, says a recent study. The chances of dying in a decade are twice for middle-aged person or senior citizen who are not able to stand on one leg for more than 10 seconds than those people who can do it, added the study. This 12-year research, which shows the link between balance and mortality, has been carried out by a group of international experts belonging to the US, the UK, Finland, Australia and Brazil.

This study, which was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, was observational and cannot establish the cause. It was led by Dr Claudio Gil Araujo of the Clinimex exercise medicine clinic in Rio de Janeiro. As the findings are striking, the researchers suggest that a balance test should always be done in health checkups of older people.

For the study carried out from 2008 to 2020, around 1,702 people, who were aged between 51 and 75 and had stable gait, were included. The participants were asked to stand on one leg for 10 seconds without any support. Three attempts on either foot were allowed. Around 21% could not pass the test. In the next decade, 123 people died of several causes.

The inability to stand on one leg for more than 10 seconds in adults showed to increase the risk of death from any cause by 84%. The researchers said the test “provides rapid and objective feedback for the patient and health professionals regarding static balance” and “adds useful information regarding mortality risk in middle-aged and older men and women”.

Inability to balance on one leg at later stages of life raises risk of death, says study

Over 10,000 Nepali migrant workers have died in Gulf countries due to inadequate supply of drinking water, food, and long hours of manual labour in searing temperatures.

As per the records of the Nepal government, the second-largest group of deaths is in the category of ‘natural death’. The government has not defined what it means.

Nepal has witnessed 900 deaths of workers every year, primarily due to cardiovascular diseases.

Since 2008, as many as 2,123 Nepali migrant workers have died due to cardiac arrest alone and 1,878 deaths have been put under 'natural death’.

Director-General of Foreign Employment Office Rajan Prasad Shrestha said the ‘natural death’ cases are under investigation.

“Nepal is one of the major labour sending countries in South Asia. On average, we are sending 5 lakh Nepalis yearly overseas. There is a significant number of Nepalis, especially in the Gulf region and Malaysia,” Shrestha told WION.

“Most deaths are occurring in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, numbers are really high. In which, natural death and heart attack are topping the list of cause of deaths,” he added.

Looking at the record, for instance, since 2008, 2,938 Nepali migrant workers have died in Saudi Arabia, and 3,533 in Malaysia.

The migrant worker deaths have been classified broadly into categories of cardiac arrest, natural cause, traffic accident, suicide, and workplace death.

Currently, there are 400,000 Nepalis working in Saudi Arabia and 300,000 in Qatar.

Apart from cardiovascular diseases, the number of migrant workers diagnosed with kidney failure is also increasing, especially from Gulf countries.

Of labours working overseas, only 5 per cent are skilled laborers, while 74 per cent are unskilled and 21 per cent semi-skilled.

After talking to returnee Nepali migrant workers, it was found that the majority of them were working under extremely harsh conditions, with no access to proper clean drinking water and food.

Lal Singh Ghatri Morga, a 38-year-old migrant labour, has been diagnosed with kidney failure and visits the hospital twice a week to receive his dialysis treatment.

For several years, Morga has worked at construction sites in Saudi Arabia and Dubai.

“Within eight months in Dubai, while I was at the construction site, my body started to feel weak, and then I fainted and hit the ground. There was not much help from my boss at work, so I returned home. This happened maybe because I used to work for a minimum of 10 hours a day, and there was heat stress, with no proper drinking water and food,” Morga shared his experience with WION.

In just the last eight months, Nepal has already seen the deaths of 1,029 people working overseas, with 213 people returning back with injuries, illnesses and long-term disabilities.

From June 2008 to February 2022, a total of 10,482 Nepali workers abroad have died.

Gulf countries are the major destinations for Nepali migrant workers in the construction trade. They are exposed to various occupational hazards, including excessive heat.

Before a migrant worker leaves, several mandatory requirements include submission of valid documents, a visa along with proof of medical tests, orientation training, and term life insurance.

Speaking to WION, Dr Ratna Mani Gajurel, Cardiologist, Hams Hospital, said, the reason behind healthy people coming back as patients is still unknown and should be ‘investigated’.

“Before leaving for the destination country, they undergo medical screening test in Nepal and get clearance for travel. After reaching the destination country, a preliminary examination is again carried out on the person. That means healthy people are cleared for work. Once they start working, they sustain different kinds of diseases like cardiovascular or kidney diseases,” he added.

He said the number of patients returning from Gulf countries is increasing, especially in countries where the temperature is more than 40 degrees centigrade.

“Not only cardiac problems, but these migrant workers working in extremely high temperatures are also getting kidney failures,” he added.

He demanded an investigation into this, “maybe the extreme heat is the problem but an investigation is required to prove whether heat is the culprit or there is another reason.”

Apart from the high demand for low-skilled labour, Nepalis also seek work overseas due to poverty, unemployment, slow economic growth, and political instability at home.

The contribution of the migrant workers’ remittances constitutes about 25 per cent of Nepal’s gross domestic product.

A man with restricted ability dies at the Gatwick airport in London while using an escalator inside the airport terminal without a helper. The man and his wife, both needed special assistance to disembark.

The airline said: “A number of our cabin crew provided medical assistance to a passenger at Gatwick airport while waiting for paramedics to arrive, however, the passenger sadly later passed away. Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this difficult time.”

As reported by The Guardian, a Gatwick airport spokesperson said the incident occurred while airport staff were helping to disembark three passengers with restricted mobility (PRM), adding that staff shortages played no role in the incident.

The spokesperson said: “This is a sad and tragic incident and our thoughts remain with the family of the deceased.

“A member of Wilson James staff was waiting when the aircraft arrived and was in the process of disembarking the three PRM passengers when the incident occurred. Staff shortages were not a factor in this incident as has been claimed. It is normal for one staff member to disembark three passengers who require assistance by taking them one at a time the short distance to the waiting buggy,” he added.

At least nine people have died of monkeypox in Congo in 2022 and Nigeria has recorded its first death from the disease, as more than 20 countries struggle with the recent disease outbreak.

Dr Aime Alongo, chief of the Sankuru health division in Congo, said Monday that 465 cases of the disease have been confirmed in the nation, making it one of the worst-hit in West and Central Africa, where the disease is endemic.

The persistence of the disease in Congo is due to the consumption of dead monkeys and rodents, Dr Alongo said.

"The residents enter the forest, pick up the corpses of monkeys, bats and rodents which are the reservoirs of monkeypox," the official added, urging those with monkeypox symptoms to visit a health centre to isolate themselves.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention announced that in 2022 it has confirmed 21 out of 66 suspected cases of the disease, which is usually endemic in Nigeria and other parts of West and Central Africa.

A spike in monkeypox cases reported in Europe and the U.S. has generated concerns among those countries, many of whom have not recorded a single case of the disease in years. Over 250 cases of the disease have been reported in more than 20 countries not usually known to have outbreaks, the World Health Organization said.

Monkeypox has not previously triggered widespread outbreaks beyond Africa, where it is endemic.

"The biggest challenge that you have with a disease such as monkeypox is that it is uncommon and the perceived risk by the population about how dangerous this condition is has been very low ... that is why ... we have conducted awareness training and advocacy training to increase the level of awareness of health care workers," Adetifa said.

Yep they were flying too! If you were to magically be transported to Earth millions of years ago, half your time was likely to be (not) wasted in running away from dinosaurs that roamed the land. Think you'd go to an island and live your days? You'll have to tackle dinosaurs in the water. And wherever you went under the sun, you were likely to be spotted by flying dinosaurs from the sky.

The 'dragon of death' was perhaps the most fearsome member of the dino-air force. This flying reptile or pterosaur's body alone was the size of a school bus. And when it spread its wing fully in front of you, the 30 feet span was just perhaps not unfurled to give you a warm hug.

This 'dragon of death' has been discovered in Argentina. It's a new species. This killing machine lived 86 million years ago

Researchers say it predated birds as among the first creatures on Earth to use wings to hunt their prey from prehistoric skies.

The team of paleontologists discovered the fossils of the newly coined Thanatosdrakon amaru in the Andes mountains in Argentina's western Mendoza province. They found that the rocks preserving the reptile's remains dated back 86 million years to the Cretaceous period.

The estimated date means these fearsome flying reptiles lived at least some 20 million years before an asteroid impact on what is now Mexico's Yucatan peninsula wiped out about three-quarters of life on the planet about 66 millions years ago.

Project leader Leonardo Ortiz said in an interview over the weekend that the fossil's never-before-seen characteristics required a new genus and species name, with the latter combining ancient Greek words for death (thanatos) and dragon (drakon).

"It seemed appropriate to name it that way," said Ortiz. "It's the dragon of death."

'Dragon of Death': This scary flying dinosaur comes, and boom you're dead

The sporting fraternity was in a state of shock after Musa Yamak, the undefeated German champion suffered a heart attack and lost his life recently. For the unversed, the 38-year-old collapsed in the ring in Munich on Saturday (May 14) while battling Uganda's Hamza Wandera, as per the New York Post report.

“We lost our compatriot Musa Askan Yamak, a boxer from Alucra, who won European and Asian championships, at a young age after a heart attack,” Turkish official Hasan Turan mentioned on the social media platform Twitter.

The fight was streamed live for the audience. Yamak collapsed prior to the third round of the contest and never recovered. He had taken a big hit from Wandera in the second round following which he stumbled.

Soon, the medical team came to the ring to assist him and help revive his life. He was rushed to a local hospital, however, the boxer was declared dead by the doctors.

“The paramedics saw turbulent scenes of emotionally charged fans and family members on site. To ensure the safety of the paramedics, we sent out a lot of patrols,” a spokesperson of the Munich Police told the German-tabloid newspaper BILD. "We then set up a protection corridor on-site so that the paramedics could work safely and conscientiously,” the spokesperson added.

Here's the video of the unfortunate incident which led to Musa's death:

Andrew Symonds, former Australian cricket all-rounder, dies in car crash

Europe's largest economy Germany is rethinking death. In the past, the country, especially the Northern Lutheran faith region, has been known for its orthodox, stern attitude towards death.

However, the country is starting to see death and the expression of grief over a loved one's passing in a completely different way.

Recently the northern city of Bremen played host to a unique exhibition called "Life and Death 2022". This was a funeral fair, organised by Leben und Tod, who deal with the "taboo subject of death" in the public eye.

The exhibition, which was held on the 6th and 7th of May also unveiled a unique way to prolong life digitally.

"Youlo", a play on "You Only Live Once", allows people to record videos and messages for the people left behind; their loved ones. These messages can be preserved for several years in "digital tombstones".

The fair had more than 4000 people show up to learn more about alternative ways to mark their end. For a deeply traditional nation, this marked a change of trend, something for which the coronavirus pandemic and the unprecedented numbers of deaths acted as a catalyst.

Around 136,000 people lost their lives during the pandemic in Germany, which has largely helped in challenging the taboos around death in the European nation.

However, change in Germany has been slower than in other European nations. A huge reason behind this is the strict legal rules on funerals.

For example, a 200-year-old law known as the "Friedhofszwang" bans the burial of coffins and urns anywhere but in a cemetery. This law was originally drafted for hygiene purposes. Under this, the bereaved are not even allowed to take out the ashes of a loved one from a crematorium.

Now the country is relaxing these rules and people are also accepting death as a part of life. In Germany these days people can easily find classes on how to make their own coffin and funeral speech writing has become a profession.

The change in the culture of burials and grief is undoubtedly a step toward dealing with death in a healthier manner.

Watch | Gravitas: This 'Suicide Pod' ensures 'painless death' in a minute The exhibition, which was held on the 6th and 7th of May also unveiled a unique way to prolong life digitally. "Youlo", a play on "You Only Live Once", allows people to record videos and messages for the people left behind; their loved ones. These messages can be preserved for several years in "digital tombstones". Also read | Now, Colombia approves assisted medical suicide for seriously ill patients The fair had more than 4000 people show up to learn more about alternative ways to mark their end. For a deeply traditional nation, this marked a change of trend, something for which the coronavirus pandemic and the unprecedented numbers of deaths acted as a catalyst. Image courtesy: Leben und Tod, M3B GmbH/Oliver Saul Around 136,000 people lost their lives during the pandemic in Germany, which has largely helped in challenging the taboos around death in the European nation. Also read | Twitter deal temporarily on hold, says Elon Musk Now the country is relaxing these rules and people are also accepting death as a part of life. In Germany these days people can easily find classes on how to make their own coffin and funeral speech writing has become a profession. The change in the culture of burials and grief is undoubtedly a step toward dealing with death in a healthier manner. (With inputs from agencies)

A 72-year-old man from Bangkok in Thailand finally cremated his wife’s body after keeping it inside a coffin at his home for almost 21 years. Since the death of his wife in 2001, the retired military officer called Chan Chanwatcharakarn has kept her body in their home in the Ben Khen district.

However, according to a report on the Strait Times, Chanwatcharakarn was worried that he would die without holding a funeral for his wife and as a result, he decided to cremate her belongings with the help of a foundation. The foundation helped him in arranging for the cremation and funeral.

According to the report, his wife died from a brain aneurysm after experiencing high blood pressure and her body was taken to Wat Chonpratarn Rangsarit in Nonthaburi to have Buddhist rites conducted. However, he did not cremate her body and kept it in a coffin instead.

The Petchkasem Krungthep Foundation, which helped Chen in completing the last rites of his wife, said that his house was like a ‘storage facility’ with running water but no electricity. They also said that the woman’s body was found in a ‘dry condition’ inside the well-maintained coffin in the house.

After the cremation, the last remains were kept in an urn which Chen said that he will keep with himself till he dies. The foundation is taking care of Chen right now with volunteers giving him food and drink to the 72-year-old after helping him with the cremation of his late wife.

A man from Arizona in US is facing animal cruelty charges for allegedly freeing alive animals.

According to the Mohave County officers, around 183 animals were found frozen, including dogs, turtles, lizards, birds, snakes, mice, rats and rabbits.

Michael Patrick Turland was arrested on Wednesday after an inspection was conducted at the property following a complaint from a woman that she never got her snakes back which were lent for breeding.

The inspection was conducted on April 3 after Turland had vacated the property in Golden Valley.

“Deputies and Animal Control Officers entered the property and located the freezer, which contained approximately 183 frozen animals of different breeds. Officers located dogs, turtles, lizards, birds, snakes, mice, rats, and rabbits. Several of the animals appeared to have been frozen alive due to their body positioning.

The property owner said 43-year-old Turland had moved out of state, leaving the freezer in the garage.

The deputies attempted to contact Turland and his wife by phone, but did not get any response.

As recovery crews sifted through the mud at the China Eastern Airlines crash site, dozens of relatives of those on board flight MU5735 remained nearby in an anxious wait for further news.

One was Qin Haitao who comes from neighbouring Hunan province.

Qin's daughter, Shujun, was a passenger on the flight on Monday that had been en-route from the southwestern inland city of Kunming to the southeastern coastal city of Guangzhou, when it plummeted to the ground in a rural part of the Guangxi region, leaving no known survivors.

Guangzhou-based migrant worker Shujun, 40, had travelled to Kunming to accompany her mother to see a specialist doctor she had heard was very good.

"We couldn't believe it and didn't dare say anything, for fear that my wife would not be able to bear it," Qin said, when describing the moment he heard the news of the crash on Monday.

"Our eyes were full of tears but we dared not weep. In fact, we knew the truth, but we kept it from her for a night, for half a day plus one night."

Qin said he initially received no official confirmation about his daughter's situation. But on Monday night his brother-in-law rushed to Guangzhou's Baiyun International Airport, where the flight was scheduled to arrive. There, he was shown a list of the passengers' names, which included Shujun's.

On Tuesday, Qin, his son and two others drove to Wuzhou and the next day visited the crash site accompanied by staff and volunteers from China Eastern.

"It's so painful," he said in a broken voice, holding back tears. "We have nothing but grief now…We are living in grief every day."

A police officer in Australia was found not guilty on Friday in the death of a 19-year-old Indigenous man whose shooting more than two years ago prompted widespread protests and worsened long-simmering tensions over the government’s treatment of the country’s native peoples.

The officer, Zachary Rolfe, 30, had been charged with murder and other counts after killing the teenager, Kumanjayi Walker, during an attempted arrest in a remote Australian community. After a closely watched trial that lasted over a month and featured testimony from more than 40 witnesses, Rolfe was cleared of all charges by a jury in the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in Darwin.

The prosecution had argued that Rolfe used excessive force and did not need to shoot Walker two additional times after the first shot. The defence argued that Rolfe, who had been stabbed by Walker with medical scissors as officers tried to apprehend him, had acted in self-defence.

Many Indigenous Australians had seen the case as a test of whether authorities could be held accountable after what they call decades of abuses. While no police officer has been convicted of murdering an Indigenous person in Australia, nearly 500 Indigenous people have died in police custody since 1991, when a royal commission made 339 recommendations to reduce such deaths.

“We kind of knew there was only a slim chance, but we hoped so hard,” said Yasmine Musharbash, a senior lecturer in anthropology at the Australian National University who has been living in Yuendumu, where Walker was killed, and who was with members of the community who gathered in the city of Alice Springs to hear the verdict announced.

In the weeks after Walker’s death in November 2019, people throughout the country turned out at dozens of protests against police brutality toward Indigenous Australians, who are roughly 12 times as likely to be in custody as non-Indigenous Australians.

For the last five weeks, many relatives and friends of Walker had gathered on the lawn in front of the courthouse in Alice Springs, where the case was broadcast, choosing to remain outside to avoid the trauma of hearing the details of his death again.

But on Friday, after a deliberation of seven hours by the jury, they filed in to hear the verdict.

“As they read through each charge and the jury said ‘not guilty,’ and then the next one is ‘not guilty,’ and the next one is ‘not guilty’ as well — we all sat there and quietly cried,” Musharbash said.

Robin Japanangka Granites, a Yuendumu community elder who was also at the courthouse in Alice Springs, said: “We’re just feeling a bit heartbroken. Today was a time when it went not our way, but the opposite.”

On the Thursday before his death, Walker, armed with an ax, had a run-in with members of the local police force in Yuendumu as they tried to arrest him for breaching a suspended sentence. He had been released from prison the month before after serving time for property crime charges and was supposed to be at a rehabilitation facility in Alice Springs.

Three days later, on Saturday, Rolfe and another officer entered the home of Walker’s grandmother, also in Yuendumu, which has a population of about 750 people and where Walker had gone for his grandfather’s funeral.

In the scuffle, Walker stabbed Rolfe in the shoulder with a pair of medical scissors. A fellow officer restrained Walker on the ground, and Rolfe shot him three times.

In the hours that followed, Walker did not receive adequate medical care, because staff members had evacuated the health clinic in Yuendumu earlier in the day over safety concerns after a number of break-ins. The nearest clinic was some 40 miles away. Though his relatives waited for news outside the police station, they were not told of his death until 10 hours later.

Speaking to reporters outside court in Darwin on Friday, Rolfe’s attorney, David Edwardson, said there had been no winners in the case. “A young man died, and that’s tragic,” he said. He added: “At the same time, Zachary Rolfe, in my view, was wrongly charged in the first place. It was an appalling investigation and very much regretted.”

After the verdict, Rolfe hugged supporters and family members, while Walker’s relatives let out wails of anguish. Rolfe is expected to return to his job as a police officer in the Northern Territory.

Residents of remote Australian communities, which have large Indigenous populations and are among the poorest in Australia, are not necessarily hostile to the police, Musharbash said.

“People are so incredibly good at distinguishing between people who stand with them and people who are dangerous to them, and they make that distinction for police, too,” she said. “They know what a good copper is like, and they love a good copper.”

But there is a strong sense in the community that the police should not use guns and should have some awareness of their needs, she added. Rolfe, who grew up in a wealthy family in Canberra, the capital, and spent years in the army before joining the police force, had never visited Yuendumu before the day of Walker’s death.

At a news conference outside the courthouse, Valerie Napaljarri Martin, an advocate for the Yuendumu community, spoke of the “anger and grief” of those who knew Walker.

“We demand an end to guns in our communities,” she said. “We have every right to speak and to say: This must stop. Do not silence us.”

As pandemic enters third year, Covid related deaths to soon reach 6 million

Sydney, Australia's most populous city that has been drenched in rain for days, braced for more heavy downpours on Sunday as the death toll from flooding across the country's east rose to 17.

A wild weather system that dumped more than a year's worth of rainfall over a week in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales (NSW) brought widespread destruction, leaving thousands of people in the states displaced and sweeping away property, livestock and roads.

Seventeen people have been killed since the deluge began, including a Queensland woman, whose body was found on Saturday, according to police.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) of NSW said a new weather system could bring another round of heavy rains across NSW, of which Sydney is the capital, raising the risks of flooding.

"We are facing, unfortunately, a few more days of ongoing wet, stormy weather which will be quite dangerous for residents of NSW," BOM meteorologist Jane Golding said at a televised briefing.

In the north of New South Wales, the Clarence River remained at a major flood level, but Golding said that the severe weather appeared likely to clear from Wednesday onwards.

In Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, and surrounding areas that were hit by heavy storms last weekend and flooded several thousand properties, the clean-up continued over the weekend.

The process of recovery will take months, authorities said on Sunday, while donating more than A$2 million ($1.5 million) to different charities.

"For an event that lasted just three days, it's going to have a big impact on our economy and on our budget," Queensland's treasurer, Cameron Dick, said at a briefing.
