In contrast to previous Kremlin leaders who had dispatched tanks to put down uprisings in Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968, he refrained from employing force when pro-democracy rallies swept across the Soviet bloc countries of communist Eastern Europe in 1989.

Mikhail Gorbachev, former Soviet president who ended cold war, dies aged 91

Mikhail Gorbachev, the man who ended the Cold War without bloodshed but failed to prevent the collapse of the Soviet Union, died on Tuesday at the age of 91.

Mikhail Gorbachev passed away in Moscow due to prolonged illness

Mikhail Gorbachev, a Soviet reformer, continued to innovate even after leaving the Kremlin, becoming the first head of state in modern Russian history to hold public office.

Tsars and Soviet leaders had traditionally passed away in the office or, in the case of General Secretary Nikita Khrushchev, had been forcibly removed from power and spent the remainder of their lives in obscurity.

Here is how Gorbachev charted his own trajectory after leaving office over a period of over three decades:

Prominent appearances

Against the advice of people close to him, Gorbachev participated in Western brand advertisements to collect money for his newly established charity.

The most well-known of these appearances was a Pizza Hut commercial in which the former USSR leader entered an American chain's restaurant after crossing Red Square.

While discussing the impact of Gorbachev's reforms, the diners present eventually stand to thank the former leader for introducing Pizza Hut to Russia.

An advertisement for the upscale clothing company Louis Vuitton from 2007 featured Gorbachev peering out of a car at the Berlin Wall while holding a monogrammed bag with the tagline, "A journey brings us face to face with ourselves."

Comeback attempt

In the 1996 presidential election, Gorbachev ran on a centrist platform but garnered fewer than 1% of the vote.

Despite having low polling numbers in the months prior to the election, his longtime foe Boris Yeltsin easily won thanks to the support of media oligarchs.

The humiliation of the former general secretary may have ultimately helped him since it demonstrated to Yeltsin—who had been trying to control Gorbachev—that he was no longer a political threat.

At the turn of 2000, Gorbachev assisted in establishing a short-lived social democratic party, although he never again sought for politics.

Green causes

With lucrative international lecture tours, a collection of memoirs, and a foundation in his honour, the former president followed in the footsteps of many Western heads of state.

Gorbachev also established the global environmental NGO Green Cross in 1992. He kept meeting with foreign leaders long after he left office to advance environmental interests.

In 2011, he turned 80, and to honour the occasion, Sharon Stone and Kevin Spacey staged a marathon charity event at London's Albert Hall. Former US president Bill Clinton and Bono were among others who paid tribute to him.

Free press

The person who started the movement of "glasnost," or openness, invested early in the opposition newspaper Novaya Gazeta in the 1990s.

During President Vladimir Putin's administration, the publication served as a forum for dissident voices, and several members of its employees, notably the investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, have been killed for their work.

Till the end of his life, Gorbachev gave interviews and offered commentary on world events.

The publishing of Novaya Gazeta, whose chief editor Dmitry Muratov received the Nobel Peace Prize the previous year, was halted in late March until Moscow's military operation in Ukraine.

In July, the Russian communications watchdog demanded that the licences for Novaya Gazeta's website and print edition be revoked.

Final days

The loss of Gorbachev's wife Raisa, who passed away from leukaemia in 1999 at the age of 67, was the greatest sadness of his life after leaving office.

The Soviet leader lived out his final days in a humble country home west of Moscow, where he and Raisa had previously resided after relocating there years before.

According to newspaper profiles and documentaries, he maintained home with a cleaner and a small security team while frequently travelling to Moscow for functions and foundation visits.

The first monkeypox-related fatality in the US was verified on Tuesday by Texas authorities, who added that they are still trying to determine what role the disease played in the death of the "severely immunocompromised" patient.

Few cases of monkeypox patient deaths have been reported globally but none were reported thus far in the United States during the current outbreak.

The death was being investigated to see what part monkeypox may have played, according to a statement from Texas health officials.

They stated that the patient was an adult with a significantly compromised immune system.

There have been 18,100 cases of monkeypox reported in the US thus far. Health authorities' data suggests that there has recently been a minor slowdown in the number of new illnesses.

The majority of infections occur during sexual activity, and the epidemic mostly affects gay and bisexual men.

A CDC survey from last week found that since learning about the outbreak, about half of men who engage in heterosexual sex had cut back on their number of partners, one-night stands, or usage of dating apps.

The distribution of vaccines has been the main emphasis of the United States' response to the outbreak. The government has declared that doses will be made accessible exclusively during significant LGBTQ events, including this weekend's Southern Decadence celebration in New Orleans, two events in Oakland, California, and Atlanta's "Black Pride".

In an effort to better serve minorities, US health authorities have also started focusing on smaller gatherings. For instance, "The house [music] and ballroom community," which draws "a lot of young people and people of colour," is one such venue, according to Dr Demetre Daskalakis, deputy epidemic response coordinator for the White House.

After being bitten by a timber rattler, William H. "Marty" Martin, a renowned snake researcher, who had been making important findings about the species since childhood, passed away.

According to his wife Renee Martin, William H. "Marty" Martin passed away on August 3 after being bitten by a pet snake on their farm in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

Joe Villari, who oversees the Bull Run Mountains Preserve in northern Virginia and would accompany Martin on his expeditions there, said Martin, who was 80 years old, continued to make strenuous mountain hikes to record and count snake populations in isolated locations.

“He was in his 80s, and he was hard to keep up with,” said Villari, who made it a point to join Martin on his semiannual treks to remote mountain dens where the snakes would live.

Martin was perhaps the foremost expert on timber rattlers, a species that John Sealy, a rattlesnake researcher from Stokesdale, North Carolina, who has known Martin for more than 30 years, studied since he was a young boy.

When he was a little boy, Martin discovered a previously undiscovered population of timber rattlers in the Bull Run Mountains. He then persuaded a herpetologist to visit the area and confirm the discovery.

According to Sealy, Martin is well-known among snake experts for his fieldwork, research, and aptitude for finding and documenting elusive species.

“They’re extremely secretive animals,” he said.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that there are only about five snakebites-related deaths in the United States per year.

A second snakebite can be more dangerous than a first one for some people, according to Dan Keyler, a toxicology professor at the University of Minnesota and a specialist on snakebites.

Rattlesnakes can also be more dangerous if they get big enough to inject more venom. A person's susceptibility may also depend on their age.

In his professional life, Martin had previously been bitten but survived.

(With inputs from agencies)

Famous snake expert dies after rattlesnake bite

Former South African umpire Rudi Koertzen, along with three other people died in a car accident near Riversdale on Tuesday, a news report revealed. The 73-year-old Koertzen was on his way back home from Cape Town to Despatch in Eastern Cape, after a golf weekend when the tragic incident took place. His son, Rudi Koertzen Jr said that his father died on impact.

"He went on a golf tournament with some of his friends, and they were expected to come back on Monday, but it seems they decided to play another round of golf", Koertzen Jr told South African outlet Algoa FM News.

Koertzen officiated in 331 international matches, a record at the time of his retirement in 2010 - Pakistan`s Aleem Dar has since gone past Koertzen. Along with Dar and West Indies` Steve Bucknor, Koertzen was one of only three umpires to stand in over 100 Tests.

"It is a very big loss foremost for his family and then for South Africa and cricket," Dar was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

"I stood in so many games with him. He was not only very good as an umpire but also an excellent colleague, always very cooperative on field and also always willing to help off the field. Because of the way he was, he was also well-respected by players," he added.

Fellow South African umpire, Marais Erasmus, said, "Rudi was such a strong character, physically and mentally. He paved the way for South African umpires to get to the world stage. Made us all believe it`s possible. A true legend. As a young umpire a learnt a lot from him."

Koertzen`s first international series was India`s tour of South Africa in 1992-93 as his first game was the second ODI in Gqeberha (then Port Elizabeth). He went on to become one of the best and most well-respected umpires in the world, and won praise in September 1999 for refusing a bribe to manipulate a match between West Indies and India in Singapore.

However, the 2007 World cup final was a blip in Koertzen`s career. He was the third umpire in that match in Barbados, where the officials came in for criticism - and were penalised by the ICC - following a chaotic finish to the game.

Following his retirement from internationals in 2010, Koertzen published a book, Slow Death: Memoirs of a Cricket Umpire (with Chris Schoeman), in which he forthrightly addressed the 2007 World Cup final and other high-profile "errors" he had made in his career.

The last representative game he stood in was in 2011, an IPL match between Royal Challenger Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings in Bengaluru

Vin Scully, one of baseball`s most revered broadcasters who called Dodgers` games for a record-breaking 67 years and narrated some of the sport`s greatest moments, died on Tuesday at the age of 94, the team announced. "We have lost an icon," Dodgers President & CEO Stan Kasten said.

Scully joined the Dodgers` broadcast crew in 1950 when the club still played in Brooklyn. He followed the team to Los Angeles in 1958, where for generations of Southern California fans he was "the soundtrack to summer," personifying "Dodger baseball" more than any player.

He also attracted a national following as the voice of NBC`s baseball "Game of the Week" and broadcast numerous World Series. In October 2016, when at age 88 he left the Dodgers booth, long since named in his honor, he completed the longest tenure with one team of any professional sports broadcaster.

In his final games, he was celebrated by the Dodgers at an emotional farewell ceremony, hailed as a "national treasure" by the U.S. Congress and the national media, and saluted by fans and players alike with standing ovations. Shortly after his retirement, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America`s highest civilian honor, at a White House ceremony.

When told of the honor, said President Barack Obama: "Vin asked with characteristic humility, ‘Are you sure? I’m just an old baseball announcer.’ And we had to inform him that, to Americans of all ages, you are an old friend.” Known for his "golden voice," articulate phrasing and rich knowledge of the game, Scully announced some of the most historic games in baseball in language almost as memorable as the events he was describing.

"In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened," Scully declared in the moments after a limping Kirk Gibson homered to win Game One of the 1988 World Series for the Dodgers. "There`s 29,000 people in the ballpark and a million butterflies," Scully said as he set the scene for the climax of Sandy Koufax`s September 1965 perfect game against the Chicago Cubs.

Many commentators view Scully`s call of the game`s final inning as worthy of the top ranks of baseball literature.m "You`re the patron saint of all baseball announcers," New York Yankees` announcer Michael Kay told Scully as he interviewed him in 2013. "All we do is want to be you."

NEW YORK TO L.A.
The tall, red-haired Scully was born in New York City on Nov. 29, 1927, and attended Fordham University in the Bronx. He joined the Brooklyn Dodgers` broadcasting team at storied Ebbets Field in 1950, apprenticing with famed play-by-play announcer Red Barber.

From Barber, he learned the power of precise, colorful language and the value of describing the action objectively rather than following the custom of many other announcers in openly rooting for the home team.
"Brooklyn and the Dodgers meant more to Red Barber than to almost anyone," Scully said in his interview with Kay. "But on the mike, he was always objective, always fair. Barber has been the big influence in my life."

Scully was not yet 26 when he took the helm in the booth for the Dodgers in the 1953 World Series after Barber bowed out because of a dispute over his fee. The next season, Scully became the team`s lead play-by-play man as Barber moved to the New York Yankees. The Dodgers of that era, immortalized by writer Roger Kahn as "The Boys of Summer," featured such greats as Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball`s color bar, Duke Snider, Pee Wee Reese and Roy Campanella.

Scully was on the air in 1955 when the team won its only World Series in Brooklyn after several agonizing Fall Classic losses to the Yankees. The following year, Scully did the television play-by-play for the last half of what is still the only perfect game in World Series history, pitched by Yankee Don Larsen against the Dodgers.

Although he later criticized his description of the game as being overly dry, Scully can be heard on the preserved television broadcast telling viewers: "Let’s all take a deep breath as we go to the most dramatic ninth inning in the history of baseball. I’m going to sit back, light up, and hope I don’t chew the cigarette to pieces."

`IT`S TIME FOR DODGER BASEBALL`
But it was the Dodgers` move west after the 1957 season that propelled Scully into the ranks of the game`s biggest announcers. "It`s time for Dodger baseball" became Scully`s signature greeting to viewers and listeners before every game.

His voice became indelibly linked to the team from its very beginnings on the West Coast when the Dodgers played in the cavernous Los Angeles Coliseum while their own park was being built. Fans, straining to follow the action in the Coliseum`s vast expanses, began bringing transistor radios to hear Scully`s play-by-play, a practice they carried to Dodger Stadium when it opened in 1962.

The 1960s Dodgers were wildly popular with their fans and were among baseball`s best teams, led by Hall of Fame pitchers Koufax and Don Drysdale, and record-breaking base-stealer Maury Wills, of whom Scully once said: "When he runs, it`s all downhill." But it was Scully - not the athletes performing such feats - who was voted "the most memorable personality in Los Angeles Dodger history" by the club`s fans in 1976.
In the 1970s, Scully also became a fixture in national sports broadcasts, calling National Football League games and PGA golf for CBS-TV from 1975 to 1982, baseball`s "Game of the Week" on NBC television from 1983 to 1989 and CBS radio broadcasts of the World Series from 1990 to 1997.

He scaled back his broadcast schedule in his final years with the team to announce only home games or those in Western states. But his presence was deeply felt by Dodgers fans. As waves of adulation engulfed him at the Dodgers` farewell ceremony for him, Scully credited the fans as his inspiration.

"When you roar, when you cheer, when you are thrilled, for a brief moment, I am eight-years-old again."
Scully, who passed away at his home in Hidden Hills, leaves behind five children - Kevin, Todd, Erin, Kelly and Catherine, 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Sandra Scully, Vin`s wife of 47 years, died in January 2021 at 76.
