<p>The DC movie <em>The Flash</em> is one of the most-anticipated movies this year, and a lot of hope also rests on the movie's shoulders. It is set to reboot the DC film continuity to help it transition from DCEU (DC Extended Universe) to DCU (DC Universe) that DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran are building. The film has had a rocky road to release and at one point it appeared that the $200 movie might be shelved. But it was Gunn's ringing endorsement (he called it one of the greatest superhero movies ever made) that transformed the buzz around the movie. And now none other than Tom Cruise has given the movie his thumbs up.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per The Hollywood Reporter, Cruise met with Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav and the studio boss happened to tell him that the movie rocks. Curious, Cruise requested a copy of the movie and presumably because it's Cruise, the film was sent to him.&nbsp;</p>

They have had numerous run-ins with the law in the last couple of years. Even the lockdown induced by COVID-19 did not deter them as they were involved in a spate of incidents around the globe and many of which were violent in nature.</p>

<p><em>Fury of the Gods </em>begins with a rescue operation the Shazam family, dubbed Philadelphia Fiascoes by their fellow inhabitants of the city, undertakes when a bridge is collapsing. It is a hilarious, action-packed beginning that once again reminds us that these are still just kids, playing at superheroes. This fact becomes clearer when the daughters of Atlas attack the city and hold one of them hostage, asking them to return a magical object (there's always a magical object, isn't there? Sigh). However, the film becomes a CGI whirlwind midway with cool moments peppered in.</p>

<h2>Poorly written villains</h2>

<p>It is quite stunning that nearly every modern superhero movie has suffered from bad, uninteresting villains, and still screenwriters creating these stories do not seem to be able to do anything about it. Here, too, the three villainesses, played by three actresses who took this job just for money, seem to have come out straight from a badly written algorithm. It was depressing to watch Dame Helen Mirren made to mouth cookie cutter baddie lines like, "We will annihilate everything. The champions of this realm can do nothing to stop us."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Or something like that. I am just paraphrasing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nothing against Mirren, mind you. After decades of great performances, the veteran actress has earned the right to do whatever she wishes. And her very presence does lend a sort of gravitas to this film. Ditto with Lucy Liu. Zegler, on her part, has actually admitted that she took this role because she wanted a job.</p>

<h2>Visual effects are impressive, but overdone</h2>

<p>There is a scene in the film when several kinds of monsters are loose in the city, and it feels like Sandberg enjoyed using his experience with horror in these designs. The designs and effects are truly wonderful, but the same cannot be said about other CGI. It is all fluid and detailed, for the most part, but it's also too much. Practical effects are few and far between there.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Humour and performance save the film</h2>

<p>Amidst its otherwise interminable 130-minute runtime, <em>Fury of the Gods</em> does offer some good jokes. Humour is, of course, subjective, so your frequency may vary.&nbsp;The Shazam family's actors, both young and adult (not all of the young ones are kids) having worked together in two films now, share a genuine and effortless chemistry, making their comedic exchanges feel natural and engaging. Also, they are undeniably good actors. And that is one of the few things that works in the movie's favour.</p>

<h2>Final verdict</h2>

<p>As I said above,&nbsp;<em>Shazam! Fury of the Gods</em> is not a bad movie. Despite its flaws, it had enough humour and heart for me, and I enjoyed it. But keep in mind that it is a huge downgrade from the original. The effortless charm that was there is missing here.&nbsp;</p>

Visual effects are impressive, but overdone There is a scene in the film when several kinds of monsters are loose in the city, and it feels like Sandberg enjoyed using his experience with horror in these designs. The designs and effects are truly wonderful, but the same cannot be said about other CGI. It is all fluid and detailed, for the most part, but it's also too much. Practical effects are few and far between there. Humour and performance save the film Amidst its otherwise interminable 130-minute runtime, Fury of the Gods does offer some good jokes. Humour is, of course, subjective, so your frequency may vary. The Shazam family's actors, both young and adult (not all of the young ones are kids) having worked together in two films now, share a genuine and effortless chemistry, making their comedic exchanges feel natural and engaging. Also, they are undeniably good actors. And that is one of the few things that works in the movie's favour. Final verdict As I said above, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is not a bad movie. Despite its flaws, it had enough humour and heart for me, and I enjoyed it. But keep in mind that it is a huge downgrade from the original. The effortless charm that was there is missing here. <p>James Gunn has responded to the backlash he and his partner and producer Peter Safran have received in regard to the decisions the two have taken as co-CEOs of DC Studios. Gunn and Safran were appointed to lead the company by Warner Bros Discover's David Zaslav in order to unify DC Universe à la Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since assuming command, they have invited backlash by cancelling 'Wonder Woman 3' and<strong><a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/sad-news-henry-cavill-to-not-return-as-superman-confirms-actor-543142"> invalidating Henry Cavill's return as Superman</a></strong> that was announced in the post-credit scene of 'Black Adam'. There have been a handful of individual successes, sure, but as a unified cinematic universe, DC movies have failed. DC movies have suffered for a long time without any skipper to direct things. There have been competing visions, execs who have disagreed over the direction the properties should go in, and so on. What the company needed at this time is somebody exactly like Gunn: who has a proven track record in the genre and is a geek and knows these characters well. Under Gunn and Safran, the future of DC films is bright. What to expect from DCEU in the future? Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Henry Cavill will return to the role of Superman. He appeared in the role in the post-credits scene of 'Black Adam', basically challenging the man in black for a fight. We should see the return of Justice League, since except for Ben Affleck's Batman, every other character has already got or is getting their own solo movies, and can face a common threat by teaming up in a JLA movie. We know Zaslav wants DCEU to go the way MCU went — multiple superheroes versus one big supervillain. DC already has Darkseid, who appeared in 'Zack Snyder's Justice League'. Gunn and Safran have also promised the "Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects," which does make it look like the DCEU is going to be more unified from now on.
