Chinese citizen journalist Zhang Zhan has been released from prison after serving four years for her coverage of Beijing's Covid-19 response, according to a video released by media watchdog Reporters Without Borders.

However, rights groups said Zhang was still under surveillance and that her freedom was extremely limited.&nbsp;

Zhang, a former lawyer, travelled to the central city of Wuhan in February 2020 to report on the chaos at the pandemic's epicentre, questioning the authorities' handling of the outbreak in her smartphone videos.

She was detained in May 2020 and sentenced seven months later to four years in jail for "picking quarrels and provoking trouble" -- a charge routinely used to suppress dissent.

Zhang was due to be released on May 13 but a lack of information about her whereabouts had sparked concern among rights groups and activists that she could still be detained.

A short video featuring a pyjama-clad Zhang shared by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on Wednesday appeared to show she had been released as scheduled.

"Police released me from prison at five in the morning on May 13 and sent me to my older brother's home in Shanghai," Zhang said in the video, in a soft, halting voice.

"Thank you everyone for your help and concern, I wish you all the best... there is not much more that I can say," Zhang said.

It was unclear who filmed the video, with RSF saying it was released "via an intermediary".

While Zhang appears to have been released, "her contact with the outside world and daily life are all under surveillance", Jane Wang, a UK-based activist involved in the campaign to release and locate Zhang, wrote on social media platform X.

"She only has limited freedom," Wang said.

Activists as well as the United Nations' rights office have expressed concern about 40-year-old Zhang's health after she conducted several hunger strikes in prison to protest against her conviction.

"RSF remains concerned by her situation and emphasises that partial freedom is not freedom at all," the media watchdog wrote in a statement on Wednesday.

"Diplomatic intervention remains crucial to ensure her full and unconditional release without delay," RSF said.

A new family of variants of COVID-19 are doing rounds in the US- the ‘FLiRT’ variants. These variants are also from the deadly lineage of the Omicron variant but are derivatives of the JN.1, the variant that caused a surge in cases at the start of the year.&nbsp;

The letters in FLiRT variants are based on the technical names of their mutations, one which includes the letters F and L, and another one includes the letters R and T. Within this group of variants, one particular variant is of rising concern: KP.2.

As per the data gathered from the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), KP.2 has accounted for about 25 per cent of new sequenced cases during the two weeks ending April 27. However, other FLiRT variants, like KP.1.1, have not become as widespread in the US yet.&nbsp;

As per reports, researchers are still studying and gathering more information on FLiRT variants. Talking to Time, Dr Eric Topol, Executive Vice President at Scripps Research, said that the KP.2 variant from the family of variants is on the rise in the US, but it will be too soon to tell whether it will cause a major surge in cases in coming months.

For now, the amount of Covid-19 viruses in US wastewater remains “minimal,” according to the CDC. Hospitalisations and deaths have also continued to decline steadily since their recent peaks in January. At the global level, case counts rose from early to mid-April, but remain far lower than they were a few months ago.

It is still advisable to rely on vaccines. In an April 26 statement, the World Health Organization recommended basing future vaccine formulations on the JN.1 lineage, since it seems the virus will continue to evolve from that variant. The virus is bound to evolve, but public health advice remains the same - vaccinate yourself, test before big gatherings, stay home when you’re ill and consider wearing masks in public places.

However, Zhang rubbished the claim and said&nbsp;no alternative facility had been offered.&nbsp;

The study, drawn&nbsp;from state prison systems and the Federal Bureau of Prisons, documented over 6,000 deaths among incarcerated individuals in the first year of the pandemic. The analysis illustrated a stark increase of at least 50 percent in the overall prison mortality rate, with potentially over 75 per cent spike.&nbsp;

The data revealed that there was a reduction in prison admissions even when there was no increase in releases. This reduction inadvertently shielded younger individuals from COVID-19 exposure, as incarcerated populations tend to be older.

Governors, vested with the power to release prisoners, hesitated to take decisive action, with concerns over potential backlash over decision-making. Only a handful of parole boards saw notable increases in releases, with Iowa standing out for more releases.

Mitigation efforts varied widely across states, with some implementing aggressive testing and lockdown measures, while others lagged behind and resorted to calling in external support as deaths surged. Illinois, for instance, struggled to swiftly implement protective measures amid escalating fatalities.

But sometimes, the pathogen mutates enough to jump the gap and spreads between mammals, birds, or even reptiles. According to the study, reverse zoonosis provides another channel for diseases to spread. It has the potential to amplify an epidemic endangering humans. For instance, pigs infected by human flu and bird flu serve as a mixing pot for new viruses. "While pathogens certainly can move from animals to other animals and can be picked up from the environment, exposure to humans also plays an important role. It's this constant back-and-forth exchange that happens over time, increasing the probability of a mutation taking place that allows the pathogen to infect a new host," Anderson said. When animals get affected by human diseases, it is more complicated to track them as they don't often exhibit infections. "Although 10,000 deaths a month is far less than the peak of the pandemic, this level of preventable deaths is not acceptable," the WHO chief told reporters from its headquarters in Geneva.&nbsp;

The official told PTI: "The man was not from Delhi and was referred to a private hospital recently. He had multiple comorbidities and the Covid finding was incidental. The sample of the man has been sent for genome sequencing and a report is awaited."&nbsp;

The official said that the deceased was suffering from multi-system inflammatory syndrome and was "highly comorbid".&nbsp;

"The Covid finding was incidental and mostly it has been seen that patients are referred to Delhi when they are in the last stage of a disease," he added.

WION recently spoke to Dr Sushila Kataria, Senior Director, Internal Medicine, Medanta, Gurugram. She said that despite its distinct name, the JN.1 variant is not significantly different genetically from the BA variants, and they typically manifest as mild cases.&nbsp;

Talking about preventive measures, Dr Kataria said, "In light of the rising influenza cases, it is crucial to adopt preventive measures. Individuals exhibiting symptoms, regardless of age, should refrain from attending school or work, isolate themselves, wear masks in public spaces, and seek appropriate treatment. Hospital visits are advisable for those experiencing persistent symptoms or difficulties in performing routine activities."&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Dr Ankita Baidya, Consultant Infections Disease, Manipal Hospital, Dwarka told WION that the reasons for the rise are a smaller number of people following Covid appropriate behaviour, and the new strain might be having the ability to evade immunity.&nbsp;

"Watch out for the JN.1 variant in India if you experience fever and chills, abdominal discomfort, nausea, loose motion, or a combination of dry cough and sore throat – these symptoms may indicate infection with this variant. “As we increase Covid tests, cases will increase. Our TAC has met yesterday and has held discussions, the cabinet sub-committee which is meeting tomorrow will look into their suggestions or recommendations and decide on what further measures need to be taken,” said Rao.&nbsp;

The state government recently constituted a four-member cabinet sub-committee headed by Rao for COVID-19 management amid an uptick in the number of infections recorded in the state.&nbsp;

Karnataka has logged a single-day rise of 92 COVID-19 cases&nbsp;on Tuesday, taking the number of active cases in the state to 436.&nbsp;

The authors said that this is the first case of a teenager suffering vocal cord paralysis after she was diagnosed with COVID-19, although there were reports of adults suffering from similar conditions.

"The virus has known neurologic complications, including headache, seizure, and peripheral neuropathy," said otolaryngologists Danielle Larrow and Christopher Hartnick from Mass Eye and Ear at Harvard Medical School. 
 
"The current case reveals that vocal cord paralysis may be an additional neuropathic sequela of the virus,” he added.

<h2>Doctors investigate girl's symptoms</h2>

Thirteen days after the 15-year-old girl tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, she was taken to the hospital emergency department. Her initial symptoms were fever, congestion and fatigue, which improved after five days. However, after nine days of getting tested, she said that she is facing trouble breathing, especially when she is active. 
 
It was noted by emergency department doctors that her breathing was rapid and noisy while inhaling, which indicated obstructed airflow, although her oxygen levels remained normal. Tests for respiratory infections, including SARS-CoV-2, came negative. 
 
The girl, who had a history of anxiety and asthma, was given bronchodilators and steroids for a suspected asthma attack, however, that didn't help.

To carry out the research, the team used automated image analysis for a screening and parallel comparison of the anti-coronavirus effects of cobicistat and ritonavir.&nbsp;

They found that cobicistat and ritonavir both act against all eight VOCs of SARS-CoV-2 that were tested against other human coronaviruses. The study noted that cobicistat is more powerful than ritonavir.&nbsp;

"Both drugs displayed anti-coronavirus activity in vitro at dosages that are well tolerated, but higher than those currently used for booster activity of anti-HIV drugs and in Paxlovid," the study noted.&nbsp;

Dr Iart Luca Shytaj, Lecturer in the School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and one of the paper's corresponding authors, said: "Our results indicate that cobicistat, at dosages above its typical clinical use as a booster, could become an effective antiviral drug both on its own and in combination with other antivirals and lead to more potent treatments than current available options."&nbsp;

They found that cobicistat and ritonavir both act against all eight VOCs of SARS-CoV-2 that were tested against other human coronaviruses. The study noted that cobicistat is more powerful than ritonavir. "Both drugs displayed anti-coronavirus activity in vitro at dosages that are well tolerated, but higher than those currently used for booster activity of anti-HIV drugs and in Paxlovid," the study noted. "If our findings are confirmed in animal and clinical studies, our results could strengthen the arsenal of antiviral drugs in the fight against current and future outbreaks of coronaviruses and reduce their impact on public health globally," Shytaj added.

"Obviously, that would have had major repercussions, not least in terms of other vaccine supplies that were being manufactured in the EU. I don't know how far the idea got," the source added.&nbsp;
