'Risk of terrorist violence...': US issues travel advisory for Bangladesh amid communal violence, terrorism

Karnataka police detained 52 people on Thursday (Sep&nbsp;12) following communal clashes that erupted in Mandya district during a Ganpati procession on Wednesday&nbsp;(Sep 11).

Officials said that the violence broke out in Badarikoppalu village when stones were allegedly thrown from an area near a mosque at participants in the Ganpati procession. In response, several Hindu youths placed the Ganesh idol in front of the local police station and staged a protest, demanding justice. A group set fire to shops and tyres, escalating the tensions.

Relatives of the detained individuals later gathered outside the police station, calling for their release. The police clarified that those taken into custody were being questioned regarding the incident.

The north Indian state of Haryana on Sunday (Jul 21) shut down internet and bulk SMS services in the Nuh district. The 24-hour suspension of internet services comes ahead of the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra, during which communal violence erupted last year.

The suspension will remain in effect from 6 pm Sunday to 6 pm Monday, according to an order by Haryana Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Anurag Rastogi.

Senior police superintendent Prahlad Narayan Meena reportedly said, “Earlier there was confusion... that four people died...we received information about two deaths each from Krishna Hospital and Sushila Tiwari Hospital. But it later came to light that two dead bodies which were initially brought to Krishna Hospital were subsequently taken to Sushila Tiwari Hospital. So there was doubling.”

At least 250 others were injured as the demolition led to&nbsp;communal tensions.

Uttarakhand's Haldwani violence over anti-encroachment drive: Death toll revised to 2

Communal tensions&nbsp;broke out in Haldwani area in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand on Thursday evening (Feb 8) over the demolition of what authorities described as an “illegally built” madrasa, a type of Muslim educational institution mainly for children.

The incident took place in Banbhoolpura town of Haldwani, one of the largest cities in the Nainital district.&nbsp;

Since Thursday evening, four people have died and more than 250 were injured in the violence that broke out due to some “confusion”, said Nainital district magistrate Vandana Singh on Friday morning.&nbsp;

<h2>Uttarakhand violence: What is happening in Haldwani?&nbsp;</h2>

At the press conference held Friday, DM Vandana Singh said the violence was triggered by an anti-encroachment drive in the city, in which the administration was demolishing illegally built buildings on government lands.&nbsp;

“A legal process to remove the encroachment is being carried out at various places and so it was done here too...Our teams and resources moved and nobody was provoked or harmed...No actions were taken (by Police and administration) to cause harm to life and property," Singh said.

"The demolition drive began peacefully...Despite the entire process being carried out properly, a large mob, within half an hour attacked our municipal cooperation team…", said Vandana Singh.

Tourism Promotion Minister John Amaratunga said on Tuesday that 2.5 million arrivals were expected, down from an earlier estimate of 3 million, generating revenue of $4 billion.&nbsp;

He said a case of sexual assault against Dutch tourists in April in the town of Mirissa had also harmed the country's image abroad, though he could not quantify the impact of the incident in terms of visitor numbers.&nbsp;

In March, the government declared week-long a state of emergency in the central district of Kandy after rioting in which mosques and Muslim homes and businesses were destroyed.

Travel warnings for dengue are still in effect for Sri Lanka after an outbreak of the mosquito-borne virus killed more than 300 people there last year.

"When these things happen our targets get shifted... but we are working hard to attract more tourists," Amaratunga said.

Tourism accounts for nearly 5 per cent of the $87 billion economy and is a key main foreign exchange earner, along with the garment and tea industries, and remittances from Sri Lankans working abroad.

Year on year, tourist arrivals rose 24.1 per cent in March and by 17.1 per cent in the first quarter, according to government data.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday asked the people to exercise caution on news items being circulated on the social media as in many cases they are fake.

Speaking at a gathering of cable TV operators here, Banerjee asked them to stay vigilant and urged them not to beam news items involving communal violence that can fuel trouble and unrest elsewhere.

She requested the operators to felicitate government messages to be broadcast via cable TV to control such situations.

"Fake news is circulating in a big way. Fake news incite people leading to unrest. People should be aware of these and stay cautious," Banerjee said.

Quality should be maintained in serials where negativity is rampant causing social degradation, she said.

On Tuesday's nor'wester that left 18 dead and scores injured, Banerjee said, "We don't have any control on natural calamities. But at least, we should not create man-made disasters."

The cable operators told her that their financial condition worsened after the digital system was introduced replacing the analogue system and the 25,000 odd cable operators in the state are in a sorry state of affairs.

The chief minister today set up a committee to solve their problems.

The committee includes Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim, Labour Minister Malay Ghatak, Youth and Sports Minister Arup Biswas, the Commissioner of Police, and representatives of broadcasters and cable operators.

The state government will try to get a tripartite agreement to protect the interests of all, she said.

Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said there had been several disturbances throughout Tuesday night in the Kandy area, renowned for its tea plantations and scenic hills.
