Mobile internet, SMS service suspended in Haryana's Nuh district amid fears of violence
The Nuh police earlier claimed they had implemented strict security measures
The north Indian state of Haryana on Sunday (Jul 21) shut down internet and bulk SMS services in the Nuh district. The 24-hour suspension of internet services comes ahead of the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra, during which communal violence erupted last year.
The suspension will remain in effect from 6 pm Sunday to 6 pm Monday, according to an order by Haryana Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Anurag Rastogi.
"... there is an apprehension of causing tension, annoyance, agitation, damage of public and private property and disturbance of public peace and tranquility in the district Nuh..," the order read.
The authorities said the purpose of the move is to "stop the spread of misinformation and rumours" on social media platforms.
The Nuh police earlier claimed to haveimplemented strict security measures to ensure the Hindu religious procession concludes smoothly.

During the communal riots last year, at least two home guards and 15 others were killed on July 31 when a mob attacked theprocession, organised by the Vishva Hindu Parishad, pelted stones on the yatra and set cars on fire.

In reaction to theincident, another mob attacked a mosque in Gurugram and killed its imam.
Nuh is Haryana's one of the few Muslim-dominated areas, with its 79.2 per cent population or 860,000 people associating themselves with the religion. Also, almost 50 per cent of Haryana's total Muslim population resides in this district alone. Nuh is among the only 33 districts in India where Muslims constitute more than half the population.
