Rising water temperatures and the melting of glaciers and polar icecaps raised China's sea levels to their highest level on record last year, according to the government.

Even though the temperature of China's coastal waters dipped marginally in 2021 compared to the previous year, it was still the third-highest on record and 0.84 degrees Celsius higher than the 1993-2011 average.

The report issued on Saturday warned that increasing sea levels caused by climate change were having a "continuous impact" on coastal development. It further urged authorities to increase monitoring and strengthen early warning and preventive efforts.

Long-term implications of such rises include erosion of coastal ecosystems and the disappearance of tidal flats, while coastal cities face increased flood and salt tide hazards, according to the centre, a research unit of the ministry of natural resources.

The National Marine Environmental Monitoring Center reported in an annual newsletter that coastal sea levels were 84 mm (3.3 inches) higher in 2021 than the average between the years 1993 to 2011.

Last year, the Chinese environment ministry predicted that coastal water levels will rise by another 55 mm to 170 mm (2 inches to 7 inches) over the next 30 years, necessitating a bigger effort on China's part to defend its coastline.

Climate models are essential tools in climatology as they allow the projection of future warming scenarios, making it easier to identify and analyse probable climate change impacts, a report&nbsp;said.

However, a study has predicted&nbsp;that Arctic rainfall would become dominating in 2060s than in previous decades, another study claimed&nbsp;that by 2100, air pollution from forest fires in western US could triple. The third study has predicted&nbsp;a major extinction of the oceans during the next several millennia. These studies were published last year, relying on future estimates generated by some of the world’s climate models, the 'Science'&nbsp;report&nbsp;said.&nbsp;

Though, the models’ creators admit that many of them have major flaws, forecasting that future will become too hot, too fast. The modelmakers are still adjusting to this reality and researchers who use model forecasts to asses climate change implications are yet to be done. This has resulted in a slew of “faster than predicted” outcomes which threatens to undermine the credibility of climate science.

Heatwave is over in many parts of India, Delhi to experience rain on May 3: IMD

Mahendra Kumar, an autorickshaw driver in India's capital Delhi, has adopted a unique approach to keep his passengers cool.

Amid a searing summer season in the country, Kumar has set up a rooftop garden on the top of his autorickshaw.

India's Meteorological Department has warned about a heatwave across most parts of the north and said rainfall is expected in Delhi on May 3.

Despite temperatures touching 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) in the Indian capital, the thick patch of green keeps Kumar's vehicle cool.

The 48-year-old's "moving garden" is attracting customers who stop and click pictures or shoot videos during their journey inside the autorickshaw.

In an interview with French news agency AFP, Kumar said "Around two years ago I had this idea during the peak of the summer season. I thought if I can grow some plants on the roof, it will keep my auto cool and give relief from the heat to my passengers."

Although yellow and green autorickshaws are ubiquitous on New Delhi's roads but Kumar's vehicle stands out as he has installed two mini coolers and fans inside.

Plants need nutrients to grow. Agriculture relies heavily on chemical fertilisers to provide these nutrients. But what if we tell you we can use pee instead?

Yes, urine might be the solution to all our problems. Before we talk about how it can help let's see why a shift from chemical fertilisers is necessary.

Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are essential for plants and hence agriculture.

For almost a century we have relied on synthetic nitrogen to help boost agricultural production, successfully we might add.

However, synthetic nutrients like nitrogen harm the environment. When used in large quantities, these chemicals seep into waterways, ponds and rivers, giving rise to algae and essentially choking the aquatic life.&nbsp;

Chemical fertilisers also contribute to climate change by creating greenhouse gas emissions.

The nutrients that plants need; nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are present in human pee. As per Engineer Fabien Esculier, OCAPI research programme, we ingest these via food and excrete them through pee.

But a major challenge is to overcome public squeamishness over the use of human excrement for fertilising the food we eat.

As per AFP, a study on this subject found that different nations reacted differently. While China, France, and Uganda were more open to the idea, Portugal and Uganda were hesitant.

If urine is to be used, huge quantities of it would be needed and processed.&nbsp;

Earlier urban excrement along with animal manure was transported to fields before being replaced by chemical fertilisers.&nbsp;

Separating urine at the source would be necessary and as Tove Larsen, a researcher at Switzerland's Eawag aquatic research institute put it; unsightly and impractical, plus the smell will be an issue.&nbsp;

According to a new study, cutting meat consumption by 75% globally could help combat climate change. No, this does not imply that you must completely eliminate meat from your diet; rather, significant alterations are required.

The meat business has a huge environmental impact, and meat demand has only increased in recent decades, far beyond human dietary needs.

In a press release, Professor Dr&nbsp;Matin Qaim of the University of Bonn, the report's author, said that if all humans consumed as much meat as Europeans or North Americans, we would certainly miss the international climate targets and many ecosystems would collapse.

According to Qaim, we should cut our meat consumption in half, to 20 kilogrammes or fewer per year.&nbsp;

The new study, which was published in the journal Annual Review of Resource Economics on Monday, examines the economics of the meat business while also looking at the advantages it provides to society, our bodies, and the changing climate.

Affluent countries in North America, Oceania, and Europe consume the most meat per capita.&nbsp;

According to the analysis, meat demand will continue to rise until 2050. Despite the fact that excessive meat intake causes a slew of health problems, demand will continue to rise.

When compared to plant-based diets, meat produces more emissions. Furthermore, meat consumption is connected to increased deforestation and biodiversity loss, according to the study's authors.

Reducing meat consumption by 75% could aid in fight against climate change: Study

Global warming is a problem plaguing the earth with temperatures rising around the planet and this has caused major concerns for life on all terrains. The melting ice caps are already posing a huge threat to life on the planet, and it seems that the marine species are also not safe anymore.

A new research claims that global warming has brought out drastic changes in the oceans and this can result into an unprecedented extinction of marine species. The ocean ecosystems have been undergoing a lot of changes due to climate change and that has impacted marine biological richness.

The study says that with the water levels going up and the temperatures soaring, the level of oxygen in the ocean waters have gone down and this has resulted in the water taking in carbon dioxide from the air.

Thus, the water levels are going up but with not enough oxygen, the environment has become hostile for a number of aquatic animals and the study states that the depletion of oxygen is almost four times of that in 1960s. This has majorly impacted the growth and development of aquatic life.

The study, which was published in science, compared the current situation to the “great dying” – an event which occurred 250 million years ago resulting in the death of 96 per cent of marine creatures.

Climate change is here. It seems to be the right time to prepare for tackling the various effects of it. &nbsp;

Well, the government of New Zealand has already started working in this regard. &nbsp;&nbsp;

After the consultation, the proposals will be finalised by the government. It looks to carry out these plans in the next six years. &nbsp;&nbsp;

These plans may trigger sweeping reforms in institutions, councils and laws to ensure people do not build different kinds of structures in hazardous areas, improve response time in case of disasters, protect the financial system from effects of calamities, preserve cultural treasures, and also bring reforms to key industries like fisheries, tourism, farming, etc. &nbsp;

New Zealand govt comes up with plans to fight off climate change’s catastrophic effects

A new study conducted on 135 countries has estimated that climate change is putting 4 per cent of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at risk.

In comparison to Europe, South Asia is ten times more exposed to water stress, physical events, and heatwaves that are triggered by climate change.

The study, conducted by rating firm S&amp;P Global, assigns credit scores to the countries on the basis of the health of their economies.

<div class="videoWrapper trancodeVideo"><iframe allowfullscreen="" autoplay="1" class="includeVideo" frameborder="0" height="350" src="https://www.wionews.com/videos/this-grass-can-help-battle-climate-change-researchers-claim-472977/embed" style="width:100%;max-width:560px;" width="560"></iframe></div>

Trucost, a company that estimates the hidden costs of unsustainable use of natural resources, helped S&amp;P Global in conducting the study.

They used data from the World Bank of lower and lower-middle-income countries and found they that are likely to see 3.6 times greater gross domestic product losses on average than richer ones.

A credit analyst at the company, Roberto Sifon-Arevalo told Reuters news agency, "To different degrees, this is an issue for the world."

Highlighting the standing point of the study, he says "One thing that really jumps out is the need for international support for many of these (poorer) parts of the world".

'RCP 4.5', which are major new climate change policies that governments largely shy away from, were considered as the baseline scenario by scientists.

They found out East Asia and Pacific countries face similar levels of exposure to natural calamities as Central Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa regions.

According to Sifon-Arevalo, ''We strive to tell what is relevant and where but we don't rate to a worst-case scenario, we rate to a base-case scenario.''

In comparison to Europe, South Asia is ten times more exposed to water stress, physical events, and heatwaves that are triggered by climate change. The study, conducted by rating firm S&P Global, assigns credit scores to the countries on the basis of the health of their economies. Trucost, a company that estimates the hidden costs of unsustainable use of natural resources, helped S&P Global in conducting the study. They used data from the World Bank of lower and lower-middle-income countries and found they that are likely to see 3.6 times greater gross domestic product losses on average than richer ones. A credit analyst at the company, Roberto Sifon-Arevalo told Reuters news agency, "To different degrees, this is an issue for the world." Highlighting the standing point of the study, he says "One thing that really jumps out is the need for international support for many of these (poorer) parts of the world". 'RCP 4.5', which are major new climate change policies that governments largely shy away from, were considered as the baseline scenario by scientists. Also see | How climate change will impact the world's regions differently They found out East Asia and Pacific countries face similar levels of exposure to natural calamities as Central Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa regions. According to Sifon-Arevalo, ''We strive to tell what is relevant and where but we don't rate to a worst-case scenario, we rate to a base-case scenario.'' They have caused daily losses worth over $202 million other than 115 casualties on a regular basis. More than 60 countries could see their ratings cut because of global warming by 2030 according to another study conducted by the researchers from Cambridge University, the University of East Anglia and London.

Study says climate change can reduce global annual economic output 4% by 2050

Global coal power plant capacity under development declined in 2021, falling by 13 per cent compared to 2020, a survey from the Global Energy Monitor's (GEM) stated.

In its eighth annual survey, the GEM found that 34 countries have new coal plants under consideration, down from 41 countries in January 2021.

The report finds that after rising in 2020 for the first time since 2015, the total coal power capacity under development declined from 525 gigawatts (GW) to 457 GW, a record low, last year.&nbsp;

China, South Korea and Japan notably pledged to stop funding new coal plants in other countries.

However, China continued to lead all countries in the domestic development of new coal plants, commissioning more coal capacity than the rest of the world combined, followed by India, the report noted.

The authors of the report concluded that “coal’s last gasp is not yet in sight”, despite countries agreeing at the COP26 UN climate summit last November to a “phase down” instead of “phase out” coal.

&nbsp;“The coal plant pipeline is shrinking, but there is simply no carbon budget left to be building new coal plants. We need to stop now. The latest IPCC report’s directive for a fighting chance at a livable climate is clear – stop building new coal plants and retire existing ones in the developed world by 2030, and the rest of the world soon after,” Flora Champenois of Global Energy Monitor, one of the report’s authors, said.

He said coal power might take longer to peak because a key aspect of China's carbon neutrality plan was to replace direct fossil fuel use in industry, transport, buildings and other sectors with electricity.\

The report comes on the back of this month's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report which showed that there is no carbon budget left to accommodate new coal plants, and that coal use needs to fall by 75 per cent by 2030 (from 2019 levels) to limit global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius in line with the Paris Agreement.

Fighting Climate Change: IRENA Chief lauds India's efforts in combating Climate Change

It is worrying. Humanity’s future is threatened more than ever.

A newly released report by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, or UNDRR has found that in the last two decades, every year around 350 to 500 medium-to-large scale disasters took place around the globe.

What causes concern is that this is five times more than the average over the previous three decades.

The UN cautioned that humanity is suffering from a "broken perception of risk," which is driving us to engage in activities and behaviours that contribute to climate change and an increase in natural disasters around the world.

It doesn’t end there. As climate changes, disasters caused by drought, severe temperatures, and devastating flooding are projected to become more common in the future.

According to the report, by 2030, the world will experience 560 disasters every year, or 1.5 disasters per day on average.

The reason behind this drastic rise, according to UNDRR can be attributed to a "broken perception of risk based on optimism, underestimation and invincibility".

Humanity, however, continues to ignore the towering risks, “setting humanity on a spiral of self-destruction," warned UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.

This indifference comes at a heavy cost. Over the last decade, disasters have cost around $170 billion per year around the world, according to the report; borne primarily by low-income countries.&nbsp;

Each year, disasters cost them one per cent of their national GDP, compared to 0.1 to 0.2 per cent in wealthy countries.

And if the number of disasters rises, so will the costs.

The report estimates that, by 2030, 37.6 million more people will be living in severe poverty as a result of climate change and natural catastrophes.
