In the face of strong conservative opposition, European Parliament lawmakers on Wednesday narrowly voted to back a European Commission proposal for a total ban on new CO2-emitting vehicles by 2035.

The Commission last year unveiled plans to stop the sale of vehicles using internal combustion engines as part of an ambitious climate target to cut emissions by more than half over this decade and 90 per cent by 2035.

The measure passed by 339 votes to 249 with 24 abstentions at a session in Strasbourg -- in practice limiting future sales to emissions-free all-electric models.

Cars currently account for 12 percent of all CO2 emissions in the 27-member EU bloc, while transportation overall accounts for around a quarter.

The conservative European People's Party (EPP), the parliament's biggest group of lawmakers, had sought to push a compromise that would have diluted the proposals and allowed sales of hybrid vehicles to continue.

Their amendment was narrowly defeated while an ambitious attempt by the Greens to bring the measure deadline forward to 2030 also failed.

Conservatives were also unable to push through amendments on having a car's production-related carbon footprint taken into consideration as well -- potentially allowing carmakers credits for synthetic, so-called e-fuels, made with captured carbon dioxide and hydrogen produced from renewable sources.

India is the fourth worst-hit when it comes to climate change-induced migration, with more than three million people forced to leave their homes in 2020-2021, the latest report said.

According to the 'State of India's Environment-2022' report, maximum migrations took place in China with more than five million people driven out of their homes due to weather-related disasters.
Following China, the Philippines and Bangladesh recorded over four million climate change-induced displacements, the report said.

The report found that climate was a bigger problem compared to conflicts and violence as the number of people displaced due to the former was much higher than the latter.

It said that more than 40 million people were forced to migrate across the globe in 2020, out of which 30.7 million migrated due to climatic events like floods, droughts, storms, cyclones, landslides, extreme temperatures and other such events while 9.8 million people were displaced due to conflicts and violence.

Floods and storms in the regions of East Asia, the Pacific and South Asia triggered the most disaster-related displacements, the report said.

In a startling revelation, the report said that nearly 143 million people, which is a little more than the population of India's state of Maharashtra, could be moving within their own countries in the next 30 years because of adverse climate impacts.

It said that 44 million additional people will be forced to migrate due to droughts in 2059, compared with the 2000–2015 period.

Scientists said that by 2020, new internal displacements took place across 42 countries due to conflict and violence and 144 countries due to disasters.

"Human migration and mobility are age-old phenomena, but their triggers are fast changing due to deteriorating environment and ecosystems. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the world saw large-scale displacements triggered by climate and weather events in 2020 and 2021," the report said.

While coastal states of India are seeing a rapid increase in floods and cyclones brought on by the impacts of climate change, interior regions see slower effects such as droughts.

As a whole, the country is at severe risk to climate change, says the Indian government’s Climate Vulnerability Index in 2019-20.

The growing threat of climate change impacts also increases the instances of displacement and migration, making people more vulnerable to trafficking, the report said.

India's states of Bihar, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are seeing frequent extreme weather events as well as high numbers of trafficking cases, the report said.

India is fourth worst-hit when it comes to climate change-induced migration: Report

Negotiators from almost 200 countries will meet in Bonn Monday for climate talks tasked with reigniting momentum on tackling global warming, as Russia's invasion of Ukraine overshadows the threat from rising emissions.

The conference will set the stage for a fresh round of major United Nations talks later this year in Egypt.

It will also be a chance to test the resolve of nations facing a catalogue of crises, including escalating climate impacts, geopolitical tensions, bloodshed in Ukraine and the threat of a devastating global food crisis.

"Climate change is not an agenda we can afford to push back on our global schedule," said outgoing UN climate change chief Patricia Espinosa ahead of the meeting.

She said it is imperative that nations arrive at the UN COP27 meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh in November prepared to show they are taking "bold, concrete steps -- backed by specific plans -- to deliver the urgent and transformational climate ambition we simply must see before it's too late".

Governments have already accepted that climate change is a grave threat to humanity and the planet, and have advocated immediate action to cut fossil fuel emissions and prepare for the accelerating impacts of warming.

The summary to this year's landmark climate report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded that any further delay in action "will miss a brief and rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all".

But as things are going, the world is unlikely to be able to meet the Paris climate deal's commitment to limit warming "well below" 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

"There is this disconnect between the scientific evidence of global crisis in the making, of potentially rushing towards unmanageable climate impact, versus the lack of action," Johan Rockstrom, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, told AFP.

"This is a deep worry."

Funding focus

While the June 6 to 16 conference in Bonn is a largely technical meeting aimed at preparing for Egypt, there are a number of key issues up for debate.

A particular focus will be funding from rich polluters to help vulnerable developing nations least responsible for global heating to cope with its increasingly ferocious consequences.

A promise of $100 billion a year from 2020 to help them adapt to a warming world has still not been met.

Meanwhile, there are growing calls for "loss and damage" funding for countries already struck by devastating climate impacts, with a specific dialogue on the subject slated for this week.

The Alliance of Small Island States has warned that the Bonn conference must not be "just another talk shop", calling for a "clear view" on when and how this financing will be put in place.

'Fragile' world

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres last week warned that Russia's invasion of Ukraine risked slowing action to combat the climate crisis.

"But I think this war has demonstrated one thing: how fragile the world is in its dependence to fossil fuels," he added.

The invasion has prompted countries, particularly in Europe, to scramble to shore up energy supplies. It has also caused wheat and fertiliser prices to soar.

Fears of a food crisis have intensified in recent weeks, with India moving to ban wheat exports after the hottest March and April on record -- blamed largely on climate change -- hit harvests.

One opportunity for exhibiting political will comes on Wednesday when the European Parliament votes several hotly debated planks of the bloc's sprawling "Fit for 55" climate plan.

EU member states have set themselves the target of reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by 55 per cent by 2030 compared to 1990, and achieving carbon neutrality for the continent by 2050.

In May, an analysis from non-profit groups found that countries in the G20 group of major economies have yet to strengthen greenhouse gas reduction goals, despite agreeing to revisit their plans.

Last year in Glasgow, countries made new pledges to slash methane emissions, stop deforestation and other measures that -- in addition to existing national carbon cutting pledges could theoretically cap warming under 2C, said Rockstrom.

But that means the focus at this year's meetings needs to be on "accountability", he added.

In May 2022, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was 50 per cent higher than during the pre-industrial era, reaching levels not seen on Earth for about four million years, the main US climate agency said on Friday.

Global warming caused by humans, particularly through the production of electricity using fossil fuels, transport, the production of cement, or even deforestation, is responsible for the new high, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said.

May is usually the month with the highest carbon dioxide levels each year.

In May 2022, the threshold of 420 parts per million (ppm) -- a unit of measurement used to quantify pollution in the atmosphere -- was crossed.

In May 2021, the rate was 419 ppm, and in 2020, 417 ppm.

The measurements are taken at the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii, ideally located high on a volcano, which allows it to escape the possible influence of local pollution.

Before the Industrial Revolution, levels of carbon dioxide held steady at around 280 ppm, a level maintained for approximately 6,000 years of human civilization that preceded industrialization, according to NOAA.

The level now is comparable to what it was between 4.1 and 4.5 million years ago when carbon dioxide levels were near or above 400 ppm, the agency said in a statement.

Alps are the new victim of climate change. The snow-white mountains seem to be turning green, media reports said citing a study. The change is visible from space. Now, green plants can be seen in the mountain range. The research, which has been published in ‘Science’, used satellite data to come up with the findings. Since 1984, the vegetated areas above the treeline seems to have increased by 77% in the Alps, the study said. The rise in the plant biomass is described by the researchers as an “absolutely massive” change.

The growing season is prolonging due to rising temperatures and increased rainfall. It is helping plants in colonising new areas and becoming taller. “The scale of the change has turned out to be absolutely massive in the Alps,” said Prof Sabine Rumpf from the University of Basel. He is also the lead author of the research.

The loss of less than 10% snow cover above treeline is significant, the scientists said. Mountain areas seem to be heating up around twice as fast as the average globally. More plants at high altitudes may threaten Alpine plants as they are adapted to harsh conditions but are not competitive, as per Rumpf. “The unique biodiversity of the Alps is therefore under considerable pressure,” said Rumpf.

“Previous analyses of satellite data hadn’t identified any such trend. This may be because the resolution of the satellite images was insufficient or because the periods considered were too short,” said Prof Antoine Guisan of the University of Lausanne.

More than 70 percent of river monitoring stations in India have alarming levels of heavy toxic metals like iron and nickel, a latest report said on Thursday.

The 'State of India's Environment -2022' report revealed that 40 percent of the river monitoring stations have high levels of total coliform and 15 percent have biochemical oxygen demand beyond permissible limits, which indicate poor wastewater treatment from industry, agriculture and domestic households.

The report, released ahead of World Environment Day to be celebrated on June 5, said that more than a third of India's coastline, spread across 6,907 km, witnessed soil erosion between 1990 and 2018 due to rise in sea level and anthropogenic activities.

India has almost 30 percent of its geographical area under degradation, triggered by various factors which include climate change.

The soil health remains deficient in several key macro and micro-nutrients that are key for sustainable agriculture, it said.

It warned that while the cost of cultivation has increased, the income from it has gown down.

The cost of cultivation has increased by almost 35 percent between 2012-13 and 2018-19, but the share of income from cultivation in an agricultural household has diminished from 48 percent in 2012-13 to 37 percent in 2018-19, it said.

"At the same time, half of all agricultural households are under debt. As per government data, on an average, at least 29 farmers and farm labourers commit suicide in the country daily," the report said.

Scientists said that forest cover in 244 out of 638 assessed districts across India's 27 states and five union territories has shrunk between 2019 and 2021.

By 2050, the entire forest cover might become a climate hotspot, it said.

The report, prepared by India's environmental think tank Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), made some startling revelations on the various environmental issues in India.

India witnessed an unprecedented heatwave this year, as in impact of climate change, which caused massive crop damage and deaths.

In 2022, India recorded its hottest March. This triggered an early onslaught of heatwaves.

As per the report, the country reported 280 heatwave days between March 11 and May 18, the highest in the past 10 years. This is almost double of what the country experienced in 2012, the second highest heatwave year in the past decade.

Climate triggers more internal displacements than conflicts in the world now and India is the fourth worst hit after China, the Philippines and Bangladesh.

It said that more than 1.7 million Indians die due to diseases attributable to unhealthy diet and that 71 percent of the country's population cannot afford a healthy diet.

The report said that only five large states in India which are Telangana, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, and two small states -Mizoram and Telangana- show good overall performance in Health Index that looks at key health indicators and existing infrastructure.

In the energy sector, the report said that one-third of all carbon emissions come from burning coal, making it the single largest contributor to climate change in the world. India has the world's second largest operational coal plants capacity, after China.

"By 2050, the world must reduce its GHG emissions from coal by 99 per cent to restrict the temperature rise to 1.5 degree C by 2100," it said.

India recycled 12 percent and burnt 20 percent of the 3.5 million tonnes of plastic waste it generated in 2019-20, the report said, adding that there is no information on the remaining 68 percent of plastic waste, which most likely ends up in dumpsites and landfills.

The report said that reducing air pollution to meet the World Health Organization's levels would add 2.2 years to global life expectancy and in India, the life expectancy will go up by 5.9 years if the country meets the WHO levels of PM2.5.

In the last 50 years since the Stockholm conference in 1972 started a global debate around environment, the world has seen a 38-fold increase in environmental laws but the condition of the planet continues to worsen, a latest report said on Thursday.

The 'State of India's Environment -2022' report released ahead of World Environment Day to be celebrated on June 5, revealed that India's performance on climate action slipped between 2019 and 2020.

Globally, the report said that annual CO2 emissions have reached 36.7 billion tonnes, which is more than double of what was emitted in 1972 and it will have an impact on the planet's health and biodiversity in the next 50 years, unless corrective measures are fast-tracked.

It warned that with eight years left to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030, under the United Nations, India’s preparedness remains far from satisfactory.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, was adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, which provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.

There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership.

It said that India has identified 295 primary indicators, but it is monitoring only 115 of these.

Performance of all the states and union territories remains poor in the 13th SDG which is climate action.

"In essence, India is not even monitoring progress on 61 per cent of its indicators. For instance, there are 41 indicators identified under SDG 8, which deals with sustained and inclusive economic growth and productive employment. India monitors just nine of them. It is silent on crucial indicators such as the growth of registered micro, small and medium-sized enterprises," the report said.

India's performance on climate action slipped between 2019 and 2020: Report

Numerous studies and research have revealed various impacts of climate change on humans and animals. But how will the warming temperatures impact clouds? Michael Pritchard, who is a professor of Earth System Science at UC Irvine, said as quoted by ScienceDaily: "Low clouds could dry up and shrink like the ice sheets. Or they could thicken and become more reflective."

In both scenarios, different future climates can be predicted which is basically part of the problem. "If you ask two different climate models what the future will be like when we add a lot more CO2, you get two very different answers. And the key reason for this is the way clouds are included in climate models," he added.

In the latest report, experts used new computational approaches that help researchers to include cloud physics in global models to probe and find answers to long-standing questions.

Clouds are a crucial part of the atmosphere, they can affect climate. First, they are an essential part of the water cycle. Clouds provide an important link between rain and snow, oceans and lakes, and plants and animals.

They also help us keep the Earth’s temperature down by cooling down and warming up the temperatures on Earth. Clouds can block light and heat from the Sun.

The study noted that the new research on the Frontera supercomputer seeks to better incorporate clouds into global models.

It will apparently be done by breaking models into two parts: a coarse-grained, lower-resolution (100km) planetary model and many small patches with 100 to 200-meter resolution.

These simulations can capture the physical processes and turbulent eddies involved in cloud formation and do not produce unwanted side effects.

According to the European Court, the European Union(EU) missed its target spending goal on climate change as part of pre-2020 budget plan.

The report said, "In 2021, the Commission reported that it had met the target, having spent €216 billion on climate-relevant measures."

From humans to animals, from birds to small insects, the world is witnessing the negative impact of climate change. An increase in temperatures is changing the ecosystem. Animal and plant habitats are being destroyed due to heavier rainy seasons, extended droughts or unpredictable snowfall in regions that aren't used to such changes. However, a new study found that warming temperatures may, in fact, benefit one species, which is rattlesnakes. A study led by the University of Michigan has found that rattlesnakes prefer higher temperatures since they are cold-blooded animals. Subsequently, a warming climate means they spend more time in the wilderness and less time hibernating, a new study published earlier this month in the journal Ecology and Evolution suggests. ALSO READ | Four 'malicious' alien civilisations could attack or invade Earth: Researcher For the study, the team of researchers examined the Pacific rattlesnake and observed that snakes' preferred body temperatures of around 86-89 degrees Fahrenheit. Pacific rattlesnakes can be found in desert regions like Southern California. They can also be located in colder climates like Washington state. Hayley Crowell, who is a doctoral student at the University of Michigan, told US TODAY: "They're existing in temperatures cooler than what they would want to be at in a perfect world. If there's a couple degree increase in climate, these snakes, from a physiology standpoint, might be happier because it's closer to their preferred body temperature." Crowell, who is the lead author of the study, said that the observation indicates that for rattlesnakes, the hibernation ends earlier in the spring if temperatures continue to rise. "Basically just more time to grow and do rattlesnake things," she said. ALSO READ | Scientists detect new type of extremely reactive substance in the Earth's atmosphere They might gain benefits from the warming of temperatures, but rattlesnakes will face negative impacts also because of low availability of prey and water, and increased risk of exposure to wildfires. However, rattlesnakes have lower metabolisms than other animals, Crowell explained that they do not need a lot of food to survive. "They just do not need a lot of food at all to survive. A rattlesnake can totally survive just on one or two big ground squirrels a year if it needed to," she said. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Brazil flood: Death toll reaches 57, thousands displaced

Climate change is real. The excessive use of fossil fuels, deforestation and other issues have led to the rise in the temperature of the Earth. It is in turn leading to melting of glaciers, rise in sea level, etc. The worst sufferers of climate change will be coastal areas as they will face sinking due to the spike in the level of sea water. But can anything be done to stop it? Well, absolutely, the world can actually fight sea level rise. If you are wondering how, keep reading.

Build seawalls

To keep a check on the rise in sea level, seawalls can be constructed in coastal areas to ensure the sea water does not flood it. Although it can get a little expensive, it will be a must in the future. The rise in the temperature of the Earth is continuing and several coastal areas may witness flooding in the coming years. Some Hollywood flicks have already shown a glimpse of how seawalls can stop sea water flooding. Not just this, Japan has already built them in some areas.

Climate change: How can coastal areas survive rise in sea level?

The environment ministers from the Group of 7 (G7) wealthy countries pledged to curb the use of coal and other fossil fuels for power generation, with the aim of eventual and complete phaseout. However, they have not set a cut-off date on when they would do.

They also said that the energy crunch caused by the Russia-Ukraine war should not derail efforts to fight climate change.

The G-7 countries— Germany, Britain, France, Italy, Japan, Canada and the US— who met in Berlin, also announced a target to have a “highly decarbonised road sector by 2030,” paving the way for zero-emission/ e-vehicles to dominate the sales by the end of the decade.

They also assured to take "concrete and timely steps towards the goal of an eventual phase-out of domestic unabated coal power generation."

Reuters, citing sources familiar with the discussions, claimed that Japan and the United States have indicated that they could not support that date.

The G7 also aimed to start reporting publicly next year on how the countries are delivering on a past commitment to end "inefficient" fossil fuel subsidies by 2025.

The joint communique also urged countries against locking in fossil fuel subsidies designed to weather the impact of the conflict.

"In view of the Russian attack on Ukraine, financial support for companies and citizens affected by severely rising prices for fossil fuels is now on the political agenda for several countries," it said.

"Nevertheless, we aim for our relief measures to be temporary and targeted and we reaffirm our commitment to the elimination of inefficient fossil fuel subsidies by 2025."

Germany, which is the current chair of the G7, has asserted that finding alternative fossil fuels would not happen at the expense of environmental goals.

G7 pledges to phaseout coal and fossil fuel for electricity generation, but no date fixed

Scientists at the Zoological Survey of India recently recorded coral bleaching up to 83.6%, marking a maximum of 91.5% for the South Andaman region. WION tells you more in this report.

Climate change causes extensive coral bleaching in Andamans

Climate change is real. Our Earth is dying a slow death. Whether one likes it or not, we are responsible for it in one way or the other. Unless we make right amends, nothing is going to change. It is not just about holding marches, discussions or coming up with innovative slogans or getting popular in the world by raising the voice. It is all about actually taking some corrective measures as if things go the way they are currently, we may be the reason for our own downfall. But yes, there is still time to make things right.

For years, the world has been using fossil fuels excessively, resorting to deforestation, killing animals for sport, harming ocean life as we please, etc. In all of these actions, hardly any consideration has been given to any of the ill-effects of these activities.

Due to this, the world is at a stage where the temperature is going to rise above 1.5C soon, glaciers are melting around the world, sea level is rising, deforestation is still continuing, use of fossil fuel is rising, etc. The scientists have already warned the world to make changes or face catastrophe at the end. But we are busy putting in all the resources in fighting our ‘so-called’ enemies. It seems to be high time to realise who is the real enemy.

To actually make any climate change initiative successful, the contribution of every person counts. It can be as small as planting a tree to using solar power at home. Even big steps like shunning the use of fossil fuels can help. You can go for electric vehicles or take up clean energy for various things. Anything is achievable if we come together and stay on the right course. So, let’s do our bit for the environment before it bids us final goodbye.
