Scorching hot summer temperatures caused by climate change is wreaking havoc across the planet. Reportedly, Canada's easternmost province of Newfoundland and Labrador is facing its worst-ever forest wildfire, which has been raging for the better part of the last two weeks.

Such has been the state of affairs that Premier Andrew Furey has issued a state of emergency in the province and stated that things had changed significantly in the last 36 hours.

“Over the last 36 hours, things have changed. We were predicting that we could manage this. However, with the wind change, we are afraid that there will be a significant smoke impact. This is a dynamic, evolving situation as all fires are, but we can’t wait for the last minute, we have to act now,” said Andrew Furey.

According to local media reports, the area has been ravaged by two separate wildfires. One is blazing in Newfoundland near the Bay d'Espoir Highway having torched more than 12,355 acres already, while the second in Paradise Lake has destroyed more than 16,062 acres.

The heavy smoke in the region was complicating the efforts to stop the blaze as the water bombers were not able to look ahead of the fire.

One of the firefighters battling the wildfire was quoted as saying, "We're doing our very best to try and get that Bay d'Espoir Highway open again, but the reality is the fire's on both sides of the road, the wind's not helping down there, and the size of the fire is increased."

Reportedly, an outdoor fire ban has been issued as well which prohibits the setting of fires on forestland or within 300 metres of forestland.

Emergency declared in Canada's province due to wildfires, the worst in 50 years

Thousands of people were stranded in Pakistan on Monday as a result of widespread flooding brought on by the "monster monsoons" that have killed more than 1,000 people this summer. The military and volunteers are frantically attempting to evacuate them, and international aid has finally started pouring in. With the arrival of cargo planes bearing tents, food, and other everyday necessities from Turkey and the United Arab Emirates into Islamabad, the international rush to help the impoverished country is underway. The National Disaster Management Authority has been sending trucks to various regions of the nation with tents, food, and water to areas severely hit by the floods.

After officials requested assistance from other countries, they were one of the countries that promised to assist Pakistan in resolving the problem.

So far, 33 million Pakistanis have been impacted, nearly 1 million homes have been damaged, and at least 1,061 people have been killed as a result of the unusually severe monsoon rains that caused flash floods throughout the nation.

The destruction this year, according to Pakistani authorities, is worse than that of 2010, when floods claimed 1,700 lives. The country's military head, Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa, stated on Sunday that the recovery process could take years.

In a statement last week, the United Nations announced that it had set aside $3 million for U.N. relief organizations and their partners in Pakistan to respond to the floods. This money will be used for services in flood-affected areas related to health, nutrition, food security, water, and sanitation, with a focus on the most vulnerable.

Scientists and Senator Sherry Rehman of Pakistan, who also serves as that nation's climate minister, claim that this year's heavy rains in Pakistan were mostly brought on by climate change, which also resulted in forest fires.

However, some claim that Pakistan's government has no desire to construct new dams and water reservoirs.

All four of the nation's provinces have been impacted by the exceptional monsoon season. Rescue efforts are challenging since more than 150 bridges have been devastated by floods, and many highways have been washed away.

In the well-known Bordeaux vineyards, France’s most renowned wine region, something is unusual. The harvest, which normally begins in mid-September, began in mid-August this year due to the heatwave amid extreme climate change and drought. The owners of vineries said that the grapes are of good quality, but the yield has gone down that would impact the wine industry, facing the consequences of climate change.

Despite lesser yields, the season of extreme heatwaves and wildfires produced excellent, juicy, and big grapes. However, getting such crops required innovative growth methods, such as trimming vines differently and occasionally watering them in locations where irrigation is often prohibited.

Additionally, producers all throughout Europe are very concerned regarding what lies ahead, AP reported. Fabien Teitgen, a producer, said, "Global warming is very positive. We have better ripeness, better balance. ...But if you turn to the future, and if you increase the temperature by one degree more, plus, you will lose the freshness part in the balance of the wine."

French vintners are concerned that more frost may interrupt the growing season as early buds are produced by warmer winters. A year’s worth of labour can be destroyed in a violent hailstorm in a few minutes.

Numerous employees kneel in the yards to hand-pick grapes as the harvest progresses. The process of making wine begins as soon as the fruit is crushed to make juice, which is then poured into tanks and barrels. The harvest is intended to generate the renowned Pessac-Leognan wine.

The wine industry has evolved a lot as a result of drought. Vintners used to shape wines to allow grapes to receive the most sunlight possible so that more sugar could be turned into alcohol.

Another producer, Eric Perrin, said that the 2022 harvest has been the best yet because the grapes are strong and balanced. Additionally, the hot, dry weather-protected wines from getting diseases like mildew. He, however, showed his concern for smaller harvesters, as he thinks they might not be able to adapt to the changes.

Scientists have long held the view that the increased frequency of extreme weather is a result of human-caused climate change. As a series of heat waves and lack of rain affected most of Europe, huge pine trees were completely destroyed by flames in the Bordeaux region of southwestern France.

From the end of June to mid-August, there was no rain.

The tech giant, which is the world's biggest search engine, has taken a key driver of global warming out of its online carbon flight calculator.

Doug Parr, the chief scientist of Greenpeace, told BBC, "Google has airbrushed a huge chunk of the aviation industry's climate impact from its pages."

This could have wide repercussions for people's travel decisions as Google hosts nine out of every 10 online searches.

Defending its decision, Google said it made the change following consultations with its "industry partners".

David Lee, professor of atmospheric science at Manchester Metropolitan University said, "It now significantly understates the global impact of aviation on the climate."

According to experts, the aviation industry is actually responsible for around 3.5 per cent of the warming caused by human activity but the new policy will only show it as 2 per cent.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) stated in a report that emissions have risen by 50 per cent since 2000 and the industry is expected to grow by more than 4 per cent every year for the next twenty years.

Arguing that the company's priority is the "accuracy of the individual flight estimates", Google says it recognises that at the global scale they are a significant additional impact on flying.

Swiss researchers said on Monday that a study has revealed that Swiss glaciers have shed half their volume since 1931 and the ice melt is accelerating. The study was the first reconstruction of the country's ice loss in the 20th century. Researchers from the ETH Zurich technical university and the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL say they had now reconstructed the topography of all Swiss glaciers in 1931, which will show how they have evolved.

Climate change has led to rapid glacier melt in several places, which is being closely monitored since the 2000s. But there has not been a definite way to show how the glaciers changed during the 20th century.

"Based on these reconstructions and comparisons with data from the 2000s, the researchers conclude that the glacier volume halved between 1931 and 2016," they said in a statement.

The study, published in the scientific journal The Cryosphere, used material from the TerrA image archive, which covers about 86 percent of Switzerland's glacierised area, analysing around 21,700 photographs taken between 1916 and 1947.

The glaciologists used stereophotogrammetry, a technique used to determine the nature, shape and position of any object on the basis of image pairs, to do the reconstruction.

"If we know the surface topography of a glacier at two different points in time, we can calculate the difference in ice volume," lead study author Erik Schytt Mannerfelt said in the statement.

Side-by-side picture pairs showing the same spot nearly a century apart were presented in the study. The pictures show a dramatic change has taken place. The Fiescher Glacier, for instance, resembled a massive sea of ice in 1928, but in 2021, a few tiny specs of white were all that remained on the lush green mountainside.

The study used the mean year 1931 as a reference and reconstructed the surface topography of all glaciers for that year, the statement said.

The researchers added that glaciers did not continuously recede over the past century and there was even sporadic mass glacier growth in the 1920s and 1980s. However, Daniel Farinotti, a glaciology professor at ETH Zurich and WSL and co-author of the study, said that despite this growth, it was "important to keep the big picture in mind".

Also Read | Mt. The long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns show that climate change is happening at a very fast pace. Continuous rise in temperatures, disruption of the usual balance of nature, changes in the intensity and frequency of precipitation, and warmer oceans, are some of the clear indications of climate change. Global calls have been raised to tackle the situation that is worsening with every single moment. Some climate scientists have suggested raising the number of phytoplankton present in the ocean can help remove more carbon from the atmosphere. These single-celled photosynthetic organisms live suspended in water. They provide food for a wide range of sea creatures in a balanced ecosystem. Just like plants, they consume carbon dioxide, make carbohydrates using light energy, and release oxygen back into the atmosphere. John Martin, the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories oceanographer, said in 1988 that if someone gave him half a tanker of iron, he would somehow cause an ice age. The reference was the known fact that Iron is a crucial source of energy for the plankton community. It helps phytoplankton bloom. Even a small addition of iron may lead to a substantial increase in the production of phytoplankton and eventually reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. Well, scientists have also claimed that this approach would require further investigations. Meanwhile, Ken Buesseler, who is a marine radiochemist from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, investigated how and if adding iron changes the flux of carbon into the deep ocean. Reportedly, he discovered a sizable carbon-sequestering effect. Buesseler reportedly said that his research demonstrated unequivocally that increasing iron leads to the uptake of carbon dioxide. The research was completed nearly 20 years ago but it is more relevant now considering the climate crisis we are facing. As water levels across Europe's major rivers drop to dangerous levels with the region suffering a historic drought, centuries-old warnings of hardship have emerged in what could be a harbinger of hard times ahead.

These macabre warnings come in the form of boulders, inscribed with stories of past tragedies and predictions of future ones. The boulders are called "Hungersteine" or "Hunger stones".

According to a settlement made, the Bureau of Land Management will halt oil and gas leasing on 2.2 million acres of land in Colorado after being criticised by environmental activists and groups for not taking climate change into account. All new leasing in the area is currently halted.

The agreement demands the government carry out a fresh assessment of the effects of oil and gas leasing in the southwest area of Colorado.

Earlier, in the August 2020 lawsuit, the Sierra Club, Centre for Biological Diversity, and other parties claimed that the BLM violated the National Policy Act when the government approved its 20-year plan before taking a close look at the environmental aspects.

Climate change this year has brought marked changes to the weather patterns in the northern hemisphere. While Europe is sweltering under heatwaves with drought-like conditions emerging in several countries, the US, on the other hand, is about to experience quite the opposite.

A new study by Science Advances has predicted that exceedingly rare megafloods will become more common and more catastrophic in California, with the chances of the disaster developing in the next 40 years.

A megaflood is "a very severe flood event across a broad region that has the potential to bring catastrophic impacts to society in the areas affected”, Daniel Swain, a climate scientist with the University of California, Los Angeles, and a researcher involved in the study, told CNN.

Experts say that these rare superfloods could turn California's lowlands into a "vast inland sea”.

These massive floods previously happened once in a lifetime in the state. Over 150 years ago, a strong series of atmospheric rivers swarmed the entire state of California, causing one of the most exceptional floods in history following a dry spell that had left the West parched for decades.

However, researchers say that climate change is increasing the chances of these catastrophic disasters, causing them to occur every 25 to 50 years.

Though major floods have struck California, which is prone to these floods from atmospheric rivers, climate change is increasing the chances, and millions of people could be impacted.

The researchers based their findings from a 2010 analysis called “ARkStorm,” which is developed by the US Geological Survey with an interdisciplinary team.

After analysing the data, they concluded that a series of severe storms had the potential to pelt the state with enough rainfall to displace millions, impair critical infrastructure and transportation corridors, and cause close to $1tn in economic losses.

Bolsonaro, climate change, and fires: The story of Amazon rainforest's devastation

The number of fires burning in Brazil's Amazon jungle reached a 15-year high in June, despite the country's pledge last year to stop deforestation by 2030. The burning season started last month, and the pace of clearing the forest is still rapid. Given that August and September are typically the peak fire months in Brazil, conditions could get worse this month. The largest rainforest in the world is being destroyed due to the following reasons.

What causes the fire?

In the humid, tropical Amazon jungle, fires do not normally erupt like they do in Europe or the US. Instead, to clear land, farmers clear the forests and start fires in the trees, which occasionally get out of control.

Why this time of the year?

In the Amazon, the dry season is at its most intense in August and September, making fires more difficult to put out. Relief often comes with the commencement of the rainy season in October.

Role of climate change

In the past, the virgin rainforest has remained damp all year long and resisted fires. However, rising temperatures and drier conditions brought on by climate change make it more difficult to manage fires.

Worsened since 2019

Yes. Since right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro assumed office in 2019 and pushed to remove environmental laws, forest fires have gotten worse. His administration reduced the funding for environmental organisations, curtailed their ability to fight crime, and hampered the process of issuing environmental fines. According to experts, under Bolsonaro, farmers, ranchers, and land speculators feel free to damage the forest without facing consequences.

According to Bolsonaro, mining and farming should be allowed in protected Amazonian areas in order to combat poverty. His revolutionary approach to preserving the Amazon, which involved using the military to patrol the forest, had no effect on the devastation.

Will this year be any different?

In October, Brazil will have presidential elections. Experts predict that, as it did before the past four elections, as government officials courting votes relaxed environmental regulation, forest devastation will increase before that vote. Former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a left-winger who is renowned for taking a more aggressive stance against environmental crime, is currently in the lead. According to analysts, this might encourage an increase in forest crimes as long as Bolsonaro is in power.

Vicious cycle of fire and climate change

Yes. The burning of the remaining forest vegetation causes the majority of the carbon dioxide released during the removal of old-growth trees in the Amazon, which contributes to global warming. Deforestation accounts for around 9% of human-caused CO2 emissions, therefore drastically lowering it is crucial to combating climate change, according to scientists.

According to one analysis from last year, emissions from destroying forests will account for the majority of Brazil's 9.5% increase in greenhouse gas emissions for 2020. Brazil intends to use its forests to produce carbon offsets in order to fulfil its commitments to reduce global emissions. According to research, old-growth rainforests have a much greater capacity to store carbon than newly developed land. According to some estimates, a hectare of virgin forest contains 176 tonnes of carbon, compared to just 5 tonnes or fewer in soy fields or cow pastures, 44 tonnes in newly planted forests within ten years, and 176 tonnes in pristine forests.

Explained: Vicious cycle of Amazon rainforest fire and climate change in Brazil

The Earth carries the scars of the enormous advancements in human technology during the last 5,000 years. We have changed the temperature, the biological variety, and the terrain. For the living, we have built skyscrapers, and for the dead, we have built enormous graves. The fact that humans have figured out how to use some of the energy on the globe, but still need more power, is maybe the most significant. The future of human civilisation will continue to be shaped by this unquenchable demand for energy for another 5,000 years. It will therefore determine how Earth will seem in the year 7010 as well.

A civilization's technological development is directly correlated with the amount of energy its citizens can control, according to Nicolai Kardashev's 1964 theory. This Kardashev Scale is used by cosmologists to forecast the technological development of future and extraterrestrial civilizations. Modern humans currently don't even register on the scale. We are now a type 0 civilisation, but we will soon evolve into a type I civilization. Kardashev himself foresaw this transformation taking place. When though?

Michio Kaku, a theoretical physicist and futurist, predicted that this transcendence would take place in the next century. Freeman Dyson, a physicist, increases his prediction to fewer than 200 years. Kardashev predicted that it would only take 3,200 years to reach type II level back then.

Humanity will still be able to manage and control atmospheric and geothermal forces even if it only reaches type I status by the year 7010. Although self-destruction and warfare may still be threats to humanity's survival, environmental issues will be a thing of the past.

Humans will have much more technical power in the 71st century if we reach the type II level by then. According to Dyson, such a civilisation would be able to capture a star with a swarm of satellites and use it to collect energy. Along with any advances in genetics and computation, other type II feats that have been postulated involve interplanetary travel and the ability to transfer entire planets.

They will probably be very different from us in terms of culture or even in terms of our brains. They could be posthumans or transhumans, terms used by futurists and philosophers.

Whatever the case, a lot can occur in 5,000 years. We might unintentionally devastate the planet with nanotechnology or obliterate ourselves through conflict. Maybe we won't be able to lessen the danger from asteroid and comet crashes. Before we even reach that level ourselves, we might even come across an alien society of type II.

What will Earth look like in 7010 AD? Will humans still exist after 5,000 years?

As England appears to be entering a drought for which some experts claim the nation is unprepared, the source of the River Thames has dried up lower downstream than ever before.

Is River Thames going to run dry amid Drought fears in Britain?

A satellite analysis on Wednesday (August 11) revealed that the world’s largest ice sheet has lost twice as much ice over the past 25 years as previously thought because Antarctica’s coastal glaciers are losing icebergs faster than the environment can restore the melting ice.

The study, led by scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and published in the journal Nature, raised new concerns about how quickly climate change is weakening Antarctica's floating ice shelves, which contribute to the rising global sea levels.

It takes thousands of years for ice shelves to form. Once formed, they act as buttresses to hold back glaciers from slipping into oceans, or else they can raise sea levels. Their size is constant as a cycle of calving and regrowth keeps them. However, in recent decades, warmer oceans have damaged the shelves from below.

The main conclusion of the study concluded that the net loss of Antarctic ice from coastal glaciers calving into the ocean is equal to the net quantity of ice that scientists already knew was being lost due to thinning caused due to melting of glaciers. The study further claimed that the thinning and calving, the total has decreased the bulk of Antarctica’s ice shelves by 12 trillion tonnes since the year 1997, twice more than anticipated, the same area as Switzerland. According to him, 88 per cent of the world’s ice could raise the sea level.

Chad Greene, JPL scientist in a press release said, "Antarctica is crumbling at its edges."

According to NASA, losses between the year 2002 to 2022 were roughly 149 million tonnes per year. The team used satellite photos to measure and record glacier flow and calving since 1997. Researchers concluded that Antarctica will reach the glacier levels pre-2000s by the end of this century.
