The recent gas leak on the Nord Stream pipelines has caused an alarm of worry not just amongst political leaders in Europe but also among scientists. Scientists worry that the release of methane into the Baltic Sea from the pipelines is one of the "biggest and worst" natural gas leaks ever, which is also posing serious climate risks.

Although both the damaged pipelines were not operational, the methane released from them being the second largest contributor to climate change is making the most of it. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is more potent than carbon dioxide.

The size of the leak is unknown, scientists have made a rough guess of 100,000 to 350,000 tonnes of methane released. If the estimates are correct, this would release more methane than the 100,000 tonnes that were released in 2015 by the Aliso Canyon, the largest blowout in US history, The Guardian reported.

As per reports, designed to enhance the supply of gas from Russia to Germany, Nord Stream 2 had 300 million cubic metres of gas when Germany suspended the certification process, just before Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

However, as per the Danish Energy Agency, the pipes held a total of 778 million cubic metres of natural gas or nearly 32 per cent of Denmark's carbon emissions. This is roughly twice what the scientists predicted. The agency's calculations indicate that over half of the gas has already left the pipeline and the remaining will be out by Sunday this week.

Estimates of the amount of methane released into the atmosphere might increase dramatically from 200,000 to 450,000 tonnes. In terms of the climate impact, 250,000 tonnes of methane is equal to 1.3 million cars on the road.

Giant telescopes that focus their lenses at the unending cosmos from the surface of Earth have to be constructed at carefully selected sites. Work of the telescope must not get hindered due to ordinary weather phenomemon like fog, clouds rains etc. Hence, such giant telescopes are installed in remote places, high on mountains or in deserts and so on.

But now even such care taken while choosing the site for the telescopes may not be adequate to ensure that work is not hampered. A study says that climate change may create problems for scientists using these telescopes.

The study was carried out by researchers in University of Bern and the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR).

“Even though telescopes usually have a lifetime of several decades, site selection processes only consider the atmospheric conditions over a short timeframe. Usually over the past five years – too short to capture long-term trends, let alone future changes caused by global warming,” explained study lead author Caroline Haslebacher. She has been quoted by Earth.com

“Nowadays, astronomical observatories are designed to work under the current site conditions and only have a few possibilities for adaptation. Potential consequences of the climatic conditions for telescopes therefore include a higher risk of condensation due to an increased dew point or malfunctioning cooling systems, which can lead to more air turbulence in the telescope dome,” she added.

“This is the first time that such a study has been possible. Thanks to the higher resolution of the global climate models developed through the Horizon 2020 PRIMAVERA project, we were able to examine the conditions at various locations of the globe with great fidelity – something that we were unable to do with conventional models. These models are valuable tools for the work we do at the Wyss Academy,” said study co-author Marie-Estelle Demory.

A United Nations body has begun global talks to hammer out a consensus on reducing airline emissions in the face of lingering discord over climate change and the impact of war in Ukraine.

The 193-nation International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) assembly, held every three years, is the first since COVID-19 put pressure on policymakers to speed up reforms.

It is also the first since Russia's invasion of Ukraine soured international dialogue on a range of issues and set off a political storm over the alleged seizure of foreign jets.

Russia, which faces sanctions and a ban on the use of its airspace by Western airlines, urged the assembly to "stop the destructive actions of individual states," saying the carbon cost of skirting Russia rendered climate efforts "pointless".

The West says Russia has illegally confiscated hundreds of foreign jets, a charge Moscow denies. Both sides are expected to air their positions during the gathering from Tuesday in ICAO's Montreal headquarters, once used as a Cold War back-channel.

A top ICAO official called for unity on long-term issues dominating the 11-day talks.

"I am very confident that member states ... will come with an open mind to find a common understanding and present a way forward towards aviation and sustainability which is a central theme in this assembly," Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar told Reuters.

Airlines last year adopted a goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 in a de facto dress-rehearsal that drew reservations from Chinese carriers, reflecting Beijing's more cautious stance on multilateral action.

Now the baton passes to governments, with airlines and their suppliers pressing for unity around the same goal to avoid destabilizing aviation.

"Anything shy of that in this assembly will be viewed as a failure," Willie Walsh, director-general of the International Air Transport Association of global airlines, warned on Tuesday.

INACTION 'NOT AN OPTION'

Airbus also urged leaders to rally behind the goal. "The ICAO Assembly ... is really pivotal," Executive Vice-President for Corporate Affairs Julie Kitcher told investors.

Airlines produce 2-3% of total emissions but some 12% of transport emissions - a percentage likely to increase as other modes switch to alternatives like electricity faster than currently appears possible for anything but the shortest fights.

"We have to do something," Emile Nguza Arao, director general of Kenya's Civil Aviation Authority, told Reuters. "Sitting on our hands is not an option."

An ICAO preparatory meeting in July laid the groundwork for a 2050 net-zero target, a move the industry called "encouraging" while warning of tough negotiations.

The U.N. says more than 130 countries have set or are considering a net-zero target by mid-century to bolster adherence to the Paris Agreement.

China and Russia, however, aim to be "carbon neutral" by 2060, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken of a 2070 target.

In an ICAO paper, Beijing called for assistance to developing countries to temper "discriminatory" carbon goals.

To secure an aviation deal, diplomats are fine-tuning a text setting an "aspirational" net-zero 2050 target while embracing different circumstances, a person familiar with the talks said.

ICAO can't impose rules but its decisions influence national policies. Officials hope a global target will boost supplies of new Sustainable Aviation Fuel and encourage private investment.

Even then, aviation is expected to remain in the cross-hairs of climate groups who see the exercise as a smokescreen.

"A long-term emissions reduction goal with no enforceability plan is dead on arrival," said Jo Dardenne, aviation director at Brussels-based Transport & Environment.

"There are no consequences for those countries failing to meet it, which means that most countries won't take it seriously."

Activists renew calls for rich polluting nations to compensate developing countries for climate crisis

After a relatively calm beginning to the season, Hurricane Fiona pounded the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, leaving more than 1 million people without power or running water.

Thousands of homes and businesses lost power after the storm struck Canada's east coast on Saturday.

Although scientists have not yet concluded that Fiona's behaviour or severity was influenced by climate change, there is compelling evidence that these catastrophic storms are getting worse.

Does climate change affect hurricanes?

Yes, hurricanes are becoming wetter, windier, and generally more powerful as a result of climate change. Additionally, there is proof that it is making storms move more slowly, allowing them to dump more water in one location.

Climate change would have caused the earth to become much hotter if it weren't for the oceans. However, over the past 40 years, the ocean has absorbed 90% of the warming brought on by emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases. Near the water's surface, the majority of this ocean heat is concentrated. Stronger winds and increased storm severity may result from this added heat.

Additionally, a storm's ability to produce more rainfall can increase due to climate change. A warmer environment can store more moisture, thus water vapour accumulates until clouds form and raindrops are released, sending down heavy rain.

'Season' for hurricanes is changing

The normal "season" for hurricanes is changing as a result of climate change since more months of the year are becoming storm-friendly. Additionally, hurricanes are making landfall in places that deviate greatly from the historical norm.

With over 120 direct impacts since 1851, Florida has experienced the most hurricane landfalls in the United States. However, certain storms are becoming more intense and making landfall further north than they did in the past; this poleward shift, according to scientists, may be caused by the increase in global air and ocean temperatures.

According to Florida State University atmospheric scientist Allison Wing, this tendency is concerning for mid-latitude cities like New York, Boston, Beijing, and Tokyo because their "infrastructure is not prepared" for such storms.

However, it's uncertain whether climate change is having an impact on the frequency of storms. According to a study published in December in Nature Communications, one group of experts recently claimed to detect a rise in the frequency of North Atlantic storms during the previous 150 years. Yet the further study is being done.

How do hurricanes form?

Warm ocean water and humid, moist air are the two key components needed for hurricanes. Warm seawater evaporates, releasing heat energy into the atmosphere. The storm's winds become stronger as a result. Without it, hurricanes can't become stronger and will eventually die.

Cyclone, typhoon, hurricane - what's the difference?

'Season' for hurricanes is changing The normal "season" for hurricanes is changing as a result of climate change since more months of the year are becoming storm-friendly. These large storms have varied names based on where and how they formed, although theoretically being the same phenomenon. When storms that develop over the Atlantic Ocean or the central and eastern North Pacific attain wind speeds of at least 74 miles per hour, they are referred to be "hurricanes" (119 kilometres per hour). They are referred to be "tropical storms" up until that moment. Typhoons in East Asia are the name given to ferocious, spinning storms that develop over the Northwest Pacific, while "cyclones" develop across the Indian Ocean and South Pacific. After Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif took a rather subtle dig at western nations for climate change affecting his country in his address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina took a similar approach and targeted the rich countries. "They don't act. They can talk but they don't act. The rich countries, the developed countries, this is their responsibility. They should come forward. But we are not getting that much response from them. That is the tragedy," the Bangladesh PM told AFP. Stating that rich countries do not bother, Hasina added, "I know the rich countries, they want to become more rich and rich. They don't bother for others." Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries lying in a region which puts it in the most vulnerable category of nations expected to be affected by climate change. Hasina also called out the western nations for not coming through on raising $100 billion a year for developing nations to cope with climate change, as enshrined in the Paris accord. "We want that fund to be raised. Unfortunately, we didn't get a good response from the developed countries. Because they are the responsible ones for these damages, they should come forward," she further added. Earlier, the Pakistan PM, in an outburst talked about the climate catastrophe his country was facing and how the emissions from western countries were primarily the reason for it. "What happened in Pakistan will not stay in Pakistan. Pakistan has never seen a more stark and devastating example of the impact of global warming. Life in Pakistan has changed forever," said Sharif. Read more: Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif launches anti-India tirade at UNGA, yet claims he wants 'peace' "Why are my people paying the price of such high global warming through no fault of their own? Nature has unleashed her fury on Pakistan without looking at our carbon footprint, which is next to nothing," added Sharif. The UNGA has become a platform for the South Asian countries to show the mirror to the western nations on their hypocrisy on climate change. There have been growing demands from countries in the developing world to hold the rich and developed nations accountable for their flawed plans to tackle climate change. The voices are now asking for reparations from the rich and developed countries as well. As reported by WION, earlier this month, Pakistan's federal climate minister Sherry Rehman argued that the western nations owe developing nations reparations for accelerating climate change. Read more: Western countries owe reparations to developing nations facing climate change, says Pakistan minister “There is so much loss and damage with so little reparations to countries that contributed so little to the world’s carbon footprint that obviously the bargain made between the global north and global south is not working," said Rehman. Rehman in clear terms batted for a reset of targets and asserted that “richer countries must do more”. “Historic injustices have to be heard and there must be some level of climate equation so that the brunt of the irresponsible carbon consumption is not being laid on nations near the equator which are obviously unable to create resilient infrastructure on their own," added Rehman. The United Nations chief said on Wednesday that it was time for "meaningful action" on the issue of compensation for damage wrought by the climate crisis, especially in developing countries.

Ahead of the forthcoming COP27 UN climate summit in Egypt, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi -- the latter appearing by video link -- co-hosted a meeting of world leaders for "frank exchanges" on climate action.

"My messages were stark," Guterres told reporters at the UN General Assembly following the meeting.

"On the climate emergency: The 1.5-degrees limit is on life support –- and it is fading fast," he said, referring to the Paris accord goal of limiting long-term warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

"You have all seen the appalling images from (flooding in) Pakistan. This is happening at just 1.2 degrees of global warming, and we are headed for over three degrees."

He called on governments to tackle "four burning issues" between now and COP27: greater ambition to keep the 1.5C possible; meeting financial commitments to the developing world; increasing support for adaptation measures, and the issue of "loss and damage".

This last point has become a critical area in climate negotiations. It concerns damage already caused by multiplying extreme weather events, which neither the measures to mitigate global warming nor those to adapt to its impacts have been able to prevent.

Developing nations argue that historic polluters have a moral imperative to pay for the loss and damage, but the idea was shot down by rich nations at COP26, who offered only to start talking about the issue at COP27.

A few days ago, the group of least developed countries meeting in Dakar once more pushed on the issue, calling for the establishment of a "funding mechanism" to deal with the damage caused by global warming.

"I hope COP27 in Egypt will take it up, as a matter of climate justice, international solidarity and building trust," said Guterres.

At this point, everyone (except a few naysayers) acknowledge that climate change is a reality and we are all facing a very real danger. The Earth is warming up, the ice caps are melting, and despite the fact that organisations and national governments around the world have set lofty goals, we are mostly at a loss for what can be done to speedily reverse the situation.

Now, scientists have proposed an ambitious and some might say downright "bizarre" plan to reverse the ice loss: they want to refreeze the north and south poles.

A recent study carried out by Wake Smith of Yale University and published in Environmental Research Communications proposes that a high-flying aircraft will spray small aerosol particles into the atmosphere at latitudes of 60 degrees north and south.

These aerosols would gradually float poleward if dispersed at a height of 43,000 feet significantly shading the ground below, claims the study. They say that the additional shade would allow the melting poles to refreeze, reducing the problems of melting glacier ice and rising sea levels.

According to the scientists, the method would "abate climate change by deflecting back into space a small fraction of the incoming solar radiation."

An Oxfam report has revealed that the world's worst climate hotspots have seen a huge surge in acute hunger over the last six years. The report called on rich nations to drastically cut their emissions and compensate low-income countries. Titled "Hunger in a heating world", the analysis found that acute hunger had risen 123 per cent over six years in the 10 most-affected nations.

These nations include Somalia, Haiti, Djibouti, Kenya, Niger, Afghanistan, Guatemala, Madagascar, Burkina Faso and Zimbabwe. All of them have repeatedly witnessed extreme weather over the last two decades. As per reports compiled by the World Food Programme, an estimated 48 million people across these countries suffer acute hunger, up from 21 million people in 2016, with 18 million on the brink of starvation.

Climate change has also been leading to extreme weather conditions, such as intense heat waves and floods, which also deplete the food resources. For example, the floods in Pakistan washed away crops and topsoil and destroyed farming infrastructure.

In Guatemala, close to 80 per cent of the maize harvest has been lost owing to weather conditions, apart from causing a "coffee crisis" in the region that has hit vulnerable communities hardest and forced many to migrate to the United States.

Oxfam stressed that climate-fuelled hunger is a "stark demonstration of global inequality", with the countries least responsible for the crisis suffering most from its impact.

Polluting industrialized nations such as those of the G20 are responsible for more than three-quarters of the world's carbon emissions, while the 10 climate hotspots are collectively responsible for just 0.13 per cent.
