Situated on Egypt’s northern coast on the Mediterranean, the Nile River Delta is one of the world’s three most vulnerable hot-spots to climate change impacts, including rising sea levels.

According to recent research, the top one per cent of earners in the United Kingdom produces the same amount of carbon dioxide emissions in a single year as the bottom 10 per cent do over the course of more than two decades.

The report findings show the stark differences in carbon footprints between the bulk of people, even in industrialised nations, and what has been dubbed "the polluting elite," whose high-carbon lifestyles apparently feed the climate problem.

Citing the Autonomy's analysis of income and greenhouse gas data from 1998 to 2018, The Guardian reported that those earning £170,000 or more in the UK in 2018 were responsible for far more greenhouse gas emissions than the 30% of people earning £21,500 or less in the same year.

It would take a low earner 26 years to produce as much carbon dioxide as the richest do in a year.

The media outlet mentioned that before the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and lockdowns, which halted high-carbon activities like flying, the period covered by the dataset ends in 2018.

According to Autonomy, the UK could have earned roughly £126 billion by now by taxing carbon emissions from just the top one per cent of income categories, which could have been used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in an equitable manner, such as by insulating homes for lower-income people.

The huge gap needs to be closed, according to Peter Newell, who is a professor of international politics at the University of Sussex.

The world is suffering from climate change, carbon emissions and whatnot. But, the Middle East is the world's most water-stressed region due to low rainfall, severe heatwaves and deepening drought threatening to displace millions of people.

The UNHRC claimed that approximately 90 per cent of refugees come from the most vulnerable and least prepared nations to adapt the climate change.

In the middle east, Egypt is one of the most affected countries. He further added, "Young people from rural areas are migrating abroad or to big cities to work in industry."

Sometimes these climates change force people to displace. As Amy Pope director of the International Organisation for Migration told AFP, "If people can't farm, if people can't work, if people can't find food, they have few alternatives to displacement."

Researchers further claimed that there are several factors that contribute to decline in agriculture such as attractiveness to the facilities and services in the urban area.

Millions of individuals in middle east at risk due to extreme climate change

A report released on Friday (October 28) revealed that intensified heatwaves caused due to climate change has caused the world economy trillions of dollars over the past 30 years, with developing nations bearing the costs.

The report comes just days before the announcement of the COP27 climate summit in Egypt, where one of the main subjects to address is nations that are vulnerable to climate change.

Published in the journal Science Advances, the study also stated that unequal economic outcomes have also contributed to inequality around the world.

In a conversation with AFP, one of the authors, Justin Mankin said, "The cost of extreme heat from climate change so far has been disproportionately borne by the countries and regions least culpable for global warming."

The study estimated that between 1992 to 2013, the cost of high heat cost the roughly global economy roughly $16 billion dollars.

As per the data, poorer countries have lost nearly 6.7 per cent of their yearly GDPs whereas the developed and rich countries have lost nearly 1.5 per cent.

Experts believe numerous factors contribute to the cost of heat waves including agriculture, health systems, reduction in labour productivity and more.

The study focused on five days annually but underestimated the true cost of climate change and heat.

New study reveals heatwaves affect developing countries the most, increases global inequality

France and Spain experienced abnormally high temperatures on Thursday, which attracted some beachgoers but also added to growing worries about changing weather patterns in Europe.

Tourists were sunbathing in bikinis on the French Riviera, the terraces were packed, and the water was warm enough to swim in.

“At the end of October it cools down normally and by All Saints Day it usually rains, but this year is exceptional,” said Rose-Marie Martini, tanning on the beach in a bathing suit.

She stated that the water at her house was still warm enough for swimming (20 to 21 degrees Celsius) and that the heating was still off.

The exceptionally warm October in Western Europe comes after a summer when sweltering temperatures dried up rivers, farms, and forests and let flames run wild.

“2022 is already the hottest year on record,” said weather forecaster Frederic Nathan at Meteo France, adding that while Indian summers were not unusual, in recent years the degree of warming had been reaching unprecedented levels.

“Each year now sees dozens of heat records and virtually no low temperatures, in a typical sign of climate change,” he said.

Spain saw exceptionally warm weather on Thursday, with some locations expected to top 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). According to the national weather service AEMET, this October could end up being the warmest on record.

With the exception of October 1st, according to AEMET, every day of the month has been warmer than normal for the season.

Cities like Cordoba and Seville were scheduled to sizzle at over 30C in southern Spain, and Moron de la Frontera exceeded 34.5 (94.1). (86 F).

Temperatures in the normally rainier and cooler Basque Country in the north also stayed above 30 degrees Celsius, with San Sebastian, a coastline city, experiencing heat more typical of July.

One of the top climate experts in the world stated that the climate problem has reached a "very grim point" after a number of significant publications revealed how vulnerable the globe is to disaster.

Rockström, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, said: “It’s a really bleak moment, not only because of the reports showing that emissions are still rising, so we’re not delivering on either the Paris or Glasgow climate agreements, but we also have so much scientific evidence that we are very, very close to irreversible changes – we’re coming closer to tipping points.”

Greenhouse emissions are at a record high and raised alarms from environmentalists. The United Nations warns time is running out for Earth.

WION Climate Tracker: World close to irreversible climate change? UN warns time is running out for Earth

A new report by the United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says, the atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases including, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, which contribute to global warming, reached a record high in 2021. Last year’s levels were the biggest year-on-year jump in methane concentrations since they began measurements four decades ago, said the report.

“The continuing rise in concentrations of the main heat-trapping gases, including the record acceleration in methane levels, shows that we are heading in the wrong direction,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas. While the reason for this unprecedented increase remains unclear, said the report, they believe it is a combination of both biological and human-induced processes.

Reportedly, the carbon dioxide levels also increased between 2020 and 2021 with a larger than the average annual growth rate seen over the past decade or so. The WMO also said how these levels are still increasing in 2022.

The report also highlights how the “radiative forcing”, the warming effect on our climate, by long-lived greenhouse gases that are still in the atmosphere has increased by at least 50% last year and is fuelled by an increase in the carbon dioxide levels.

According to WMO, the carbon dioxide concentrations last year reached 415.7 parts per million (ppm), methane 1908 ppm, and nitrous oxide 334.5 ppm, which is 149%, 262% and 124% respectively, higher than pre-industrial levels. “More bad news for the planet”, said the WMO in a statement released with its annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin.

Therefore, using the findings of this report, the WMO chief highlighted the importance of implementing “cost-effective strategies” to tackle methane emissions. However, he also said that while methane is more potent at trapping heat it stays in the atmosphere for less than 10 years and is largely reversible.

“As the most urgent priority, we have to slash carbon dioxide emissions, which are the main driver of climate change and associated extreme weather, and which will affect climate for thousands of years through polar ice loss, ocean warming and sea level rise,” said Taalas. The report elucidates that after the Covid-19 pandemic-induced lockdowns global carbon dioxide levels, rebounded primarily due to fossil fuel and cement production.

While some research shows the methane increase could be due to “biogenic sources”, such as wetlands and rice paddies, the report suggests. The other possibility explored was “climate feedback” which is when the rise in temperatures leads to faster decomposition in tropical wetlands consequently leading to an increase in emissions.

“The needed changes are economically affordable and technically possible. Time is running out,” said the WMO chief reiterating his calls for action on climate change. These findings also come ahead of the UN Climate Conference COP27 in Egypt which the researchers hope will be included during negotiations.

Carbon dioxide, methane levels in atmosphere reached record high in 2021, says UN report

The International Energy Agency said Thursday it believes global energy emissions will peak in 2025 as surging prices due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine propel investment in renewables.

Only last year the IEA said there was "no clear peak in sight" in energy emissions, but the new higher investment in wind and solar is setting up demand for all fossil fuels to peak or plateau, leading to a drop in emissions.

"The global energy crisis triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine is causing profound and long-lasting changes that have the potential to hasten the transition to a more sustainable and secure energy system," the IEA said as it released its latest annual World Energy Outlook report.

Based on the latest measures and policies announced by governments in the face of soaring energy prices, the IEA forecasts global clean energy investment to rise by more than 50 percent from today's levels to $2 trillion per year by 2030.

Those measures will propel sustained gains in renewables and nuclear power.

"As a result, a high point for global emissions is reached in 2025," the IEA said.

Global energy-related CO2 emissions are then set to fall back slowly from a high point of 37 billion tonnes per year to 32 billion tonnes by 2050, it added.

The Paris-based organisation, which advises energy-consuming nations, said that its forecast sees demand for all types of fossil fuels peaking or hitting a plateau.

Coal use, which has seen a temporary bump higher, will drop back in the next few years as more renewables come online.

Natural gas hits a plateau at the end of the decade, instead of the previous forecast of a steady rise.

Oil demand levels off in the mid-2030s and then gradually declines towards mid-century due to uptake of electric vehicles, instead of the earlier estimate of a steady increase.

Overall, the share of fossil fuels in the global energy mix in the IEA's stated policies scenario falls from around 80 percent to just above 60 percent by 2050.

Energy markets 'changed'

"Energy markets and policies have changed as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, not just for the time being, but for decades to come," said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol in a statement as the report was released.

But that will still leave the world on track for a rise in global temperatures of around 2.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, which would likely trigger severe climate change impacts.

The IEA also has a scenario to arrive at zero net emissions in 2050, which is seen as necessary to hit the 1.5C warming target enshrined in the Paris climate pact.

That would require clean energy investments to rise to $4 trillion per year by 2030, instead of the current forecast of $2 trillion.

"The IEA, with all its expertise and authority is clear: clean energy investments must triple by 2030, and gas is a dead end," said Laurence Tubiana, head of the European Climate Foundation and France's former climate ambassador.

"The current European energy crisis clearly proves the dangers of gas: high price, volatility, geopolitical dependence," she added.

"We are approaching to the end of the golden age of gas," the IEA's Birol said at a later news conference.

The IEA's analyses show "that we are seeing a turning point in the history of energy and this crisis indeed accelerates clean energy transitions," he added.

However Birol noted that energy security, not climate change, is "the biggest driver for renewable" energy development currently.

Another motivation is that governments want to ensure they have got in on the manufacturing of new renewable energy technologies.

"The three drivers, when they come together, is the reason I am optimistic we are going to see an acceleration of clean energy technologies," Birol said.

Russia takes $1tn hit

The IEA's analyses also concluded that this energy crisis has also harmed Russia's long-term economic outlook.

By reducing natural gas supplies to European nations it has not only pushed them to accelerate their transition to renewables, but reduced the attractivity of gas in security terms while making it expensive for developing markets.

"Russia's role in the international energy affairs will be diminished, much diminished in terms of oil and gas trade," said Birol.

"As a result of the decline in oil and gas sales between now and 2030, Russia will lose about $1 trillion in export revenues" according to IEA calculations, he added.

New research claims that cutting meat consumption will help in tackling the climate crisis. If the world wants to avoid the worst effects of the climate problem, consumption should be decreased to the equivalent of around two hamburgers a week in the developed world.

As per the study, the consumption and production of meat contribute significantly to climate change, accounting for around a third of the UK's diet-related carbon emissions.

In order to reduce the environmental impact of food production, a report commissioned by the government last year found that people must eat 30 per cent less meat by the end of the decade.

In regions where meat consumption is high, daily meat consumption must drop to 79 kcal per person by 2030 (equivalent to two beef burgers per week) and 60 kcal by 2050 (1.5 beef burgers per week).

Apart from meat consumption, additional measures include accelerating the phase-out of coal as an energy source and a six-fold faster expansion of public transportation.

The new 200-page report, states that we need a five-fold increase in the rate at which we transition to healthier, more sustainable diets.

As quoted by Daily Mail, Ani Dasgupta, president and CEO of World Resources Institute, said: "This year, the world has seen the devastation wrought by just 1.1 degrees Celsius of warming."

"Every fraction of a degree matters in the fight to protect people and the planet. We are seeing important advances in the fight against climate change, but we are still not winning in any sector," Dasgupta added.

"The State of Climate Action 2022 is an urgent wakeup call for decision-makers to commit to real transformation across every aspect of our economy," Dasgupta said.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern met with researchers at New Zealand's Scott Base in Antarctica. Her visit was part of a trip to emphasise the problems with climate change, her nation's commitment to the continent, and the necessity of regional cooperation.

Ardern, who began her 72-hour journey on Wednesday, said in a recording that was sent overnight that New Zealand's presence in Antarctica was at a "critical juncture" since the facility is nearing the end of its existence.

"The role that we play, and our scientists play here, is incredibly important for our present and our future," she said during a visit marking Scott Base's 65th anniversary.

To support its presence there for the next 50 years, New Zealand stated last year that it would be providing NZ$344 million ($200.72 million) for a refurbishment of the base.

About 15% of the continent, or the Ross Dependency, is subject to New Zealand's claim.

"Cooperation in Antarctica and in the Antarctic Treaty System is more important than ever as we tackle the crises of climate change and biodiversity loss," Ardern added.

Both China and Russia have made investments in recent years to increase their presence and capabilities in Antarctica, and Western nations have reacted similarly.

Australia, which has the largest claim to Antarctica, revealed plans to spend slightly over A$804 million ($522.04 million) to boost its interests there by purchasing drones and helicopters and establishing mobile stations earlier this year.

"What (Ardern's) doing is flagging, literally and metaphorically, New Zealand's ongoing commitment to its territorial claim in the Antarctic, its presence in the Antarctic, and its commitment to operating in the Antarctic," said Alan Hemmings, a Christchurch-based specialist on Antarctic governance at the University of Canterbury.

International climate pledges remain far off track to limit rising temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius, according to a report released by the United Nations on Wednesday, less than two weeks ahead of high-stakes negotiations to tackle global warming.

The combined climate pledges of more than 190 nations that signed up to the 2015 Paris climate deal put Earth on track to warm by around 2.5C compared to pre-industrial levels by the century's end.

With the planet already battered by climate-enhanced heatwaves, storms and floods after just 1.2C of warming, experts say the world is still failing to act with sufficient urgency to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

"We are still nowhere near the scale and pace of emission reductions required to put us on track toward a 1.5 degrees Celsius world," said Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change.

"To keep this goal alive, national governments need to strengthen their climate action plans now and implement them in the next eight years."

The UN's climate experts have said emissions -- compared to 2010 levels -- need to fall 45 per cent by 2030 in order to meet the Paris deal's more ambitious goal.

In its latest report, the UN said that current commitments from governments around the world will in fact increase emissions by 10.6 per cent by 2030.

Climate pledges far off track from limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees: UN

In a rather out-of-the-blue move, more than 300 companies from 56 countries that include the likes of Nestle, H&M and Tata Steel among others have called upon world leaders to make it compulsory to disclose their environmental impact by 2030.

In a rather out-of-the-blue move, more than 300 companies from 56 countries that include the likes of Nestle, H&M and Tata Steel among others have called upon world leaders to make it compulsory to disclose their environmental impact by 2030. Reportedly, an open letter was dispatched to heads of state and business leaders ahead of Cop15, scheduled to take place in Montreal this December. In the letter, the businesses called for the leaders to take the pledge at the event itself. If the world leaders agree to the proposal put forth, the pledge will apply to all large companies across 196 countries that have signed up for the Convention on Biological Diversity. Read more: NASA's new methane detection tool will help detect 'super-emitters' from space Speaking about agreeing to sign such a proposal, clothing giant H&M said it was looking for 'opportunities to change'. “We are looking into opportunities to change the materials we use towards 100% recycled or sustainably sourced materials, which are less resource-intensive – basically, less land use, water, pesticides and chemicals,” said Leyla Ertur, the head of sustainability at H&M. WATCH | Mad rush in Moscow as shoppers take last chance to shop at H&M Experts suggested that the business houses had finally come around to the idea that if the planet was dead, no businesses could be sustained. “They stand ready to transform their businesses and are calling on governments to set the rules of the game through legislation that will create fair competition for business.” Notably, the companies that have raised their hands and come on board for the proposal have combined revenues of more than $1.5 trillion. However, if other companies don't agree to make such disclosures mandatory, it will become voluntary. There has been an increase in the number of companies coming forward and making such pledges. UK, France and New Zealand have made climate disclosures mandatory for companies. Thus, the new proposal will put pressure on other countries to take action as well. The report titled, “The coldest year of the rest of their lives”, which was released on Tuesday, shows how by 2050 more than two billion children will be exposed to “more frequent, longer lasting, and more severe” heatwaves. It also underlines that young children face a greater risk when compared to adults in an extreme heat event.

According to UNICEF, at least 559 million children will witness at least four to five dangerous heat waves per year but this number is expected to reach more than two billion children by 2050 even if we manage to keep the temperature 1.7 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial levels. They have also attributed this to how a young person is less able to regulate their body temperature during such an event.

This inability also makes them more vulnerable to health issues including, chronic respiratory conditions, asthma, and cardiovascular diseases said the report. Furthermore, intense heat can lead to drought which would also hinder access to clean drinking water and lead to food insecurity and consequently stunt development in children and force families to migrate.

According to Vanessa Nakate, UNICEF’s goodwill ambassador, “The more frequent, longer lasting and more severe heat waves children are exposed to, the greater the impacts on health, safety, nutrition, education, access to water and future livelihoods.” The climate activist also noted how the children, “who are least responsible for climate change are bearing its biggest costs”.

Nakate added, “Unless world leaders at Cop27 take action to correct the course we are on, heatwaves will become even harsher than they are already destined to be.” This report also comes ahead of the UN Cop 27 which is set to take place on November 6.

“The climate crisis is a child rights crisis”, said Catherine Russell, executive director of UNICEF, giving the examples of wildfires and heat waves swept through India, Europe, and North America earlier this year she said that climate change is already taking a “devastating toll on children’s lives and futures.”

Therefore, the report has called on countries and governments from across the world for – protecting children from climate devastation by adapting social services; preparing children to live in a climate-changed world; prioritizing children and young people in climate finance and resources; preventing a climate catastrophe by drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions and keep 1.5 degrees Celsius alive.

Climate change is a pressing concern for the health of the planet. However, people worldwide appear to have become less concerned about its effect.

Globally, the number of people thinking climate change posed a “very serious threat" to their country stood at 48.7 per cent in 2021 which was a fall of 1.5 percentage points, compared to a similar survey conducted by Gallup World Risk Poll in 2019.

People in China who think on the same lines have come down to 20 per cent, a full three percentage points down from the previous findings. Incidentally, China is the world's biggest polluter.

As for the US, the second biggest polluter globally, climate change awareness rose slightly amongst the masses to 51.5 per cent.
