How climate change drives heatwaves and wildfires

We have all been told for years now that time is of the essence when it comes to climate change. Some alarmists predict dire consequences in the near future, while moderates, such as myself, understand that while some climate change is actually natural, the pollution we emit can't be good and that clean energy is a worthy cause.

Wherever you are on the spectrum, we can all agree that with enough international collaboration, we can do better for our planetary homeland. The 2021 Climate Summit in Glasgow was just such an effort, but was criticised as a PR stunt. Is there any truth to the accusation?

Consider that China accounts for twice as much carbon pollution as the United States. I lived in the Central Valley of California, south of Fresno, and can personally attest to poor air quality carried over the Pacific from Beijing, not from Los Angeles.

While countries like Denmark are removing farmland from use, countries like Germany are closing their nuclear power plants, and the United States is funding clean energy programs, China is continuing towards a projected peak pollution by 2030. Yes, you read that correctly. China will continue increasing its carbon pollution until around 2030, and doesn't project to be carbon neutral until 2060.

"But China is the largest investor in solar and wind power!" You might comment. While China is the largest investor in clean energy, they do so at the mercy of the economy. With 1.3 trillion residents, China is the most populous country on earth. As such, they can be both the largest investor in clean energy and the largest producer of carbon emissions at the same time. So do we give them a free pass for their clean energy investment, or do we continue to criticize them for their contribution to carbon emissions?

During the Middle Ages, clergy within the Catholic Church sold indulgences. A person could pay the church to absolve them of sins: past, present, or future. These proceeds were supposed to go to the poor, but we know that they were used to fatten the purses of friars and priests. I believe this is what we are watching happen before our eyes with climate change pledges from countries like China. Smaller countries will jeopardize their economies, and by extension their citizens, attempting to meet these climate pledges that are merely a drop in the bucket compared to the pillars of black smoke rising from China’s most populous regions. Carbon taxes and climate pledges are nothing more than modern indulgences while the biggest polluter does as it pleases.

There are many people just like me who feel we need to do better for our environment while dismissing the alarmist hype coming from the media. Wind and solar cannot sustain the entire earth. Nuclear energy must be examined and not vilified. The effect of lithium mines must be acknowledged. China’s complete dismissal of it’s own role in carbon emissions must be addressed. Until world leaders are prepared to look at the big picture rather than turning a blind eye to “the church” as it were, they will never realize full participation. Until that point, they are merely selling indulgences while the climate priests get fat.

Opinion: China and the empty promises from Glasgow

Climate change doesn't just mean soaring temperatures at a rise in the main sea levels. The effects are actually far-reaching. Today we decode the topic of how climate change affects women way worse than how it affects men.

COP26 President Alok Sharma interacted with WION's Sidhant Sibal. He elaborated on current heat waves in the UK and said that climate change is not entirely responsible for it.

The visiting President of COP26 or Conference of Parties Alok Sharma has said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown “real leadership” on climate change with initiatives like ISA or International Solar Alliance and the CDRI or Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.

Speaking exclusively to our Diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Sharma, who was on a two-day India visit, said, "The PM made really great commitment at COP26 to have 500GW of renewable energy by 2030. That is a big-big commitment, and it is a bold commitment PM Modi made.”

This is the third visit of Alok Sharma to India as COP26 chief. During the visit, he visited the International Solar Alliance (ISA) headquarters at the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) campus in Delhi. He also spoke about the prevailing heatwave in the UK, pointing out that it “was unbearable for a lot of people”.

Sharma, who is a Cabinet minister, also spoke on the ongoing leadership race for the next British PM. He said, “Both candidates Rishi Sunak as well as Liz Truss are really good people, they are really committed,” adding, in response to a question that “history will in time judge” outgoing British PM Boris Johnson well.

WION: What has been the key focus of your India visit?
Alok Sharma: Great to be back in India. This is my third visit in a year and a half and shows the level of importance that I attach to India and India’s own commitment as well. I want to roll back to 8 months ago at COP26 in Glasgow last November and what we collectively managed to get was a historic agreement, the Glasgow climate pact and the last 200 countries agreed to it because they understood that it is in their self-interest to act on as you say climate change is the biggest challenge the world is facing right now. And what I am doing is I am travelling around to different countries, talking to different governments, speaking to them about the commitments they made and how we can work together to make sure that those commitments are achieved.

WION: We have seen a deadly heatwave in the UK. How much is Climate Change responsible for it?
Alok Sharma: You can’t say that is directly entirely to do with climate change. But we can see climate is changing, we know science is telling us we are already anywhere between 1.1 to 1.2 degrees above pre-industrial levels in terms of temperatures. And you see the impact of that, and it is not evenly spread. Absolutely, in UK, we have hit record levels of temperatures, over 40 degrees and I can tell you it was unbearable for a lot of people. We also had fires breaking out, wildfires in the UK and here in India in the last few weeks, you have gone through a terrible heat wave. I can’t start to imagine what it is like for the very many people across the world who are facing extreme heat for a large part of the time. I had an opportunity to meet some people in some of the communities who are working outside, working in these conditions, and it is exactly why we need to address this issue because it is impacting many millions of lives across the world.

WION: We have seen heat waves in the UK and India. Is it the new normal and what can be done?
Alok Sharma: What sadly we are seeing is that global warming is on the rise and in the past 18 months I had an opportunity, and it has been quite humbling, to meet communities up and down the world, the front line of the climate change. People who have been driven out of their homes because of flooding, because of drought, because of rising sea levels and I am afraid to say that science tells us that this is going to get worse unless we act now and that is why the commitments we got in Glasgow, it’s so important that every country implements the commitments that are made. One of the key issues we had at Glasgow was to be able to say as a global community that we have done enough in terms of our commitments to keep alive the prospect of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. I think coming out of Glasgow, we were able to say that, but that is only on the basis that all commitments that are made by the countries are delivered. You asked me what I was doing in India, it is talking about those commitments and that is what I have been doing, going around the world since COP26, ensuring that countries understand that they made these commitments and at the end of the day world leaders made commitments at Glasgow. At Glasgow, we had 120 world leaders who came including PM Modi. All the world leaders made impassioned speeches, why it is so important to act on this issue. What we now need is the global community is to see same world leaders deliver on the commitments they made.

WION: How do you see the Russian Invasion of Ukraine impacting the consensus on dealing with climate, given when it comes to energy option, the focus is now shifting? Countries are now looking for a new way of getting energy, especially coal.
Alok Sharma: We have seen this terrible and illegal invasion of Ukraine by Russia and that of course has sparked lots of other issues as well in terms of energy security, in terms of inflation rising, debt levels rising across the world, food security issues. All of that is in play and of course, all world leaders need to deal with these immediate issues right now. As governments and world leaders, you need to be able to do one thing at a time. We know that the chronic threat of climate change is getting worse, we see that in science, we see this with our own eyes, we see that what has happened in the UK, you see what is happening here in India, across Europe, across Australia and Americas as well and therefore it is vital and important that we continue to act on this issue of climate change. You talked about the impact of invasion of Ukraine, what you are seeing is many countries looking to wean themselves off Russian hydrocarbons and I think what they understood is that if you rely on fossil fuels, particularly those owned by hostile actors, it makes you very vulnerable. So that the same time as countries are trying to meet the immediate energy needs, as they wean themselves off the Russian hydrocarbons, they are also making a very clear commitment to accelerate amount of clean energy, the home-grown clean energy. You are seeing those commitments across Europe, UK. UK has published our own Energy Security strategy. It is about doing long term in terms of solar, in terms of wind power, nuclear, hydrogen. Of course, here in India the PM made really great commitment at COP26 to have 500GW of renewable energy by 2030. That is a big-big commitment, and it is a bold commitment PM Modi made and that has been part of my discussion over last 3 days as well, the progress India is making on the path to that target.

WION: But how do you see Europe being okay with the use of coal given the fact that Russians have invaded Ukraine, because of the energy crisis? Last year, we saw coal being the biggest issue at the Glasgow climate change summit.
Alok Sharma: Coal was one of the issue, but as I said what every country is looking to do is to ensure that they are able to keep the lights on, able to heat people’s home, keep the factories and offices running and that every country and every government needs to do that but what I am saying to governments across Europe and indeed across the world when I talk to them is what that should allow to do is to have the space to accelerate in terms of clean energy growth, in terms of renewables. In UK, as an example that by 2035, a 100% electricity will come from clean energy sources, and you are seeing this commitment made by other countries as well.

WION: How India and UK can collaborate, one of the showstoppers at Glasgow was green grids initiative?
Alok Sharma: We have an excellent cooperation between our 2 countries, and we have a 2030 roadmap, climate is a very big part of that and that has been part of my discussion here as well in terms of how we advance our cooperation on renewables, on financing. As you said we have got the green grids initiative, the one world one sun initiative as well and what I have been discussing is how do we further accelerate that cooperation between our 2 countries. I have to say, India has shown real leadership, PM Modi has shown real leadership with the work on international solar alliance, the work on the CDRI which I had the privilege of co-chairing the governing council for 2 years . So, there is a lot on which India is leading on and it's worth pointing out that what India does, because of its size, because of its size of its economy, what India does absolutely matter for the world and India taking this leadership position on the climate is so vitally important if we going to tackle climate change.

WION: At the opening statement of COP26, you said lights are flashing red at the climate dashboard. You said that 8 months ago and we look to be moving towards worse?
Alok Sharma: So what I said in the Glasgow was that because of the commitments that were made, we were able to say with credibility, we kept 1.5 degree alive, the prospect of limiting global warming to 1.5 degree but I also said that the pulse of 1.5 is weak and the only way we strengthen that is to ensure that countries deliver on the commitment they made. One of the big commitments we got out of Glasgow was for every country to look again at the 2030 emission reduction target and that has been major theme that I have been discussing with countries around the world. We had some big economy that have come forward that they will revise there 2030 emission reduction target, G20 countries particularly have been making those commitments but we need everyone to step up to the play and I think the other side of this is on finance. I think it's really important for develop countries to step up support to developing nations with finance. I don't think we can ever ask developing nations to curb the growth, we need to make sure we support them with clean growth, and this is one of things we are doing through energy transition partnership.

WION: The UK is witnessing the weight of migrant origin leaders including you. From Rishi Sunak to Zahabi or Suella Braverman or Priti Patel, Sajid Javid. You see a churn in UK politics?
Alok Sharma: I think it tells you a lot about the UK and what kind of country UK is, it is a multi-racial, multi-cultural country and at the end of the day it's great as people because of the talent to move on, of course we have a contest at the moment to be our next Prime minister, both candidates Rishi Sunak, as well as Liz Truss, are really good people, they are really committed but I think the fact that in this race we had so many people, we had women, we had people from ethnic minority community standing and putting themselves forward for leadership of our country, I think is a fantastic thing and it is really great advert for what kind of country UK is.

WION: So, it's Rishi Sunak Vs Liz Truss finally. While Rishi has the MP majority backing him, but a survey shows Truss in a much more comfortable position. Where will you put your bets on?
Alok Sharma: I am not a betting person; what I can tell you is both of them are incredibly talented colleagues and I think we will be in very good hands whoever wins. One of things I have been very keen to emphasize is that whoever leads our country, shows leadership on the issue of climate change as well. PM Johnson has been absolutely brilliant on this issue of climate change, on the issue of bio diversity laws, he has shown real leadership on this and what I want to make sure is whoever ends up being our next PM, shows that same commitment to the issue as a result of COP26 ,the UK has shown international leadership, we have shown domestic leadership and it's absolutely vitally important, whoever leads , whoever is the next PM continues with the commitment.

WION: How will history judge Boris Johnson
Alok Sharma: Well, I am very sorry that Boris Johnson is leaving. I think history will in time judge him well, he did many very good things for our economy, he got the big calls right and as I said I am sorry he is leaving as our PM, but we have 2 talented individuals who are in the race to take the role and I think we will do well with either of them.

PM Modi has shown real leadership on Climate Change: COP26 President Alok Sharma

The information gathered over the past six decades demonstrates that nuclear power is a secure way to produce electricity. Nuclear power facilities have a low and decreasing accident risk. Water is used by nuclear power facilities to keep themselves cool.

Water is used for cooling in the most popular nuclear power plants in two different ways: first, to transfer heat from the reactor core to the steam turbines, and second, to remove and discard extra heat from this steam circuit.

High water temperatures put additional strain on operators at a time when half of their reactors are offline owing to maintenance and corrosion difficulties, threatening to lower several countries' already abnormally low nuclear output.

Temperatures in the valley between the Rhone and Garrone rivers have soared in recent days and are predicted to reach approximately 40 degrees Celsius on Friday and stay above seasonal averages until the start of next week.

River water is frequently used to cool reactors before being returned at a higher temperature, which is an issue. In order to prevent hot water entering rivers again from harming wildlife, reactor output is restricted during periods of extreme heat.

The Rhône's water has become too hot for the job amid a slow-burning heat wave that has killed hundreds and caused severe wildfires throughout Western Europe. Add to this, the already low water levels brought on by the drought. Reactors can no longer be cooled without releasing water downstream that is so hot that it kills aquatic life.

Nuclear power is typically seen as the least perturbable of all the low-carbon energy sources that would likely be required to combat climate change. When the weather is unfavourable for other carbon-free energy sources like wind and solar, it is the backup that is called in. However, there are specific climatic concerns specific to the nuclear sector.

Hotter rivers have an impact on many other industries, including large factories and coal- and gas-powered power plants. However, nuclear power plants are exceptional due to their enormous size and crucial role in maintaining operational energy grids in countries like France. In addition, they confront other effects of climate change besides warming and shrinking rivers. Rising sea levels and more frequent and strong storms increase the risk of flooding along the beaches. Other, uncommon issues have also been mentioned by scientists, such as increased algal bloom frequency and skyrocketing jellyfish numbers, which can choke water pipelines.

In the newest illustration of the far-reaching impacts of the current heatwave in Europe, a nuclear power plant in Switzerland is reducing its production to avoid the river that cools it reaching temperatures deadly to marine life. × The Rhône's water has become too hot for the job amid a slow-burning heat wave that has killed hundreds and caused severe wildfires throughout Western Europe. The depth of the damage the continuing drought is wreaking on America's greatest reservoir, Lake Mead can be seen in recent shocking photographs released by NASA. Newly released satellite images that were taken by NASA's Earth Observatory show the dramatic decline in the water levels. As of July 18th, Lake Mead stands at its lowest level of just 27 per cent of its full capacity. This is the result of a 22 years long downward trend. The reservoir's water levels are the lowest they've been since April 1937, a time when the reservoir which has a maximum storage capacity of 9.3 trillion gallons (36 trillion litres) was still being filled for the first time.

US President Joe Biden unveils $2.3 billion plan to fight climate change

On Wednesday (July 21), environmental experts praised US President Joe Biden’s executive initiatives to tackle the emerging climate changes. This announcement comes during the time when nearly 100 million Americans from Las Vegas to New York are under heat warnings, temperature this week is expected to reach far beyond 100 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius). In order to help states, establish cooling centers to deal with extreme heat and other effects, Biden announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency will contribute a fund for $2.3 billion. The United States has been dealing with extreme heat for a long time, with constant wildfires, Reuters reported.

As per the White House officials, the administration includes financing for programme that aids local communities to improve flood control, strengthen utilities, and adapt buildings as well as aid low-income households with heating and cooling expenses.

Joe Biden announces initiatives to tackle climate change, promises for more plans

Europe is in the grip of a climate emergency. Temperatures are soaring, wildfires are spreading. 510 people have died due to heat in Spain. 1,000 lives have been lost in Portugal. In London, firefighters say they have been never been this busy since World War 2. Palki Sharma reports.

Gravitas: Climate Emergency in Europe

We all know that greenhouse gases that cause climate change are released while burning coal or gasoline. But did you know that these gases play a positive role too? They actually help our planet remain cool by lifting pollution particles like aerosols that cool the globe by reflecting sunlight and reducing some of the heat. However, now that more and more people have accepted the reality of climate change, and air pollution is decreasing, Earth is in fact getting hotter. The detrimental effects this cleaner is having on the environment and how it will affect us going forward have been highlighted by a recent study.

Science.org reports that during the study, researchers have discovered that the impact of global air pollution on climate has decreased by up to 30 per cent from 2000 levels based on a variety of satellite studies.

Despite the fact that airborne fine particles, or aerosols, are believed to cause deaths of several million people each year, and that their reduction is good news for public health; it is bad news for global warming.

According to Johannes Quaas, a climate scientist at Leipzig University and the study's primary author, cleaner air has actually increased the amount of warming caused by carbon dioxide emissions over the same period of time by somewhere between 15 per cent and 50 per cent.

And, as air pollution continues to be reduced, he predicts, "there will be a lot more of this."

Talking to Science.org, Jan Cermak, a remote sensing expert at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, says continuing to pollute is not the solution.

“Air pollution kills people. We need clean air. There is no question about that.” Instead, he believes, efforts to minimise greenhouse gases must be increased.

However, Hansen believes there is little chance of reducing emissions quickly enough to meet the 1.5°C limit scientists have asked for, given that the Earth has warmed by about 1.2°C since preindustrial times.

Therefore, he suggests that the answer may be to turn to aerosols once more, but this time through solar geoengineering.

He claims that in order to prevent catastrophic effects, it will be essential to adopt interim corrective measures, which very certainly include the planned temporary use of aerosols. What a paradox! Improved air quality is now accelerating global warming

The action against global warming is clearly not matching with the pace that climate change is affecting our planet. UN has said that it hopes that this will be a wake up call for many governments.

On record, 85 large wildfires are burning in 13 US states, scorching more than 3 million acres, while more than 100 million Americans are in regions covered either under heat advisories or heat warnings. Officials recorded 14 additional big flames on Tuesday: seven in Texas, two in Alaska, two in Washington, and one each in Arizona and California. In total, more than 6,800 wildland firefighters and other support personnel were sent to fight fires across the US. The mercury could reach 110ºF at some places and met officials predicted the record-breaking heat to continue for a week, The Guardian reported.

Additionally, the northeast is anticipated to suffer from extreme heat. Between Philadelphia and Boston, the heat index is expected to reach close to 100º F on Wednesday (July 20).

In numerous locations, the National Western Service (NWS) has issued a ‘red flag warning’ on the potential of wildfires. As per the officials, “strong winds and low humidity would likely support the rapid spread of any fires that develop,” in the area spanning from southwest Wyoming to western Nebraska, Guardian reported.

Since early April, there have been more than 500 wildfires in Alaska, posing a serious risk to the state and necessitating multiple evacuations.

Despite the fact that the US and many other countries have been reeling under record-high temperatures, Washington politicians are unlikely to pass any legislation that could help combat the climate crisis.

As per the officials, “strong winds and low humidity would likely support the rapid spread of any fires that develop,” in the area spanning from southwest Wyoming to western Nebraska, Guardian reported. As the temperature is expected to reach its highest on Tuesday afternoon, there have also been warnings about pressure and ambulance services. Ambulance services reported receiving 6,600 calls on Monday with a peak of 300 calls around 23:00 pm. UK witnesses extreme heatwave, temperature expected to reach 42C

Amid the worsening climatic conditions in all of Europe as well as America, US President Joe Biden is mulling declaring a national climate emergency. If an emergency, albeit for the climate is imposed, it could allow the Democrat leader to suspend the oil and petroleum sector (shale) including offshore drilling as well as shut down crude oil exports.

Experts associated with the matter have informed that the President may be looking to announce additional measures that can be used to combat the issue. However, the extent of legislation in the emergency or the timeline of it has not yet been decided.

Ever since Joe Biden gained keys to the White House, he has had to tackle a raging pandemic, which has now snowballed into sky-high inflation, sending the economy into a tailspin. It hasn't helped his cause that abortion laws have been changed for good by the Supreme Court, all under his nose. Now, climate change appears to be the only poll plank standing that brought Biden into power.

Can Biden implement a climate emergency?

However, implementing a national climate emergency will require a steely resolve from the President facing pushback from his own senators, who are essentially lobbying for the non-renewable sector. Reportedly, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin III single-handedly crashed Biden's 'Build Back Better' plan to eliminate all greenhouse gas emissions from the US electricity grid and raise money for new eco-friendly technologies. Manchin has essentially thrown a monkey wrench into Biden's climate plans and the Democrats cannot help but oversee the developments helplessly.

In his presidential nomination, Biden had enlisted a $2 trillion four-year plan to curb planet-warming emissions. However, over a year into his tenure, the plan is yet to hit the ground running. Considering the Ukraine-Russia war situation and an economy that is not exactly in the best shape, it will be a monumental call if Biden decides to impose the emergency and stop the oil industry, one of the biggest contributors to the climate change problem.

Moreover, the emergency will affect the livelihood of thousands of shale workers, most of which are in the swing states. Congress is not willing to brawl with this issue and thus, the onus falls on one man and that is Joe Biden. While the chatter is increasing regarding the emergency, it will take some effort to bring it into action.

A severe, protracted drought has gripped California and the west coast of the United States for many years. Scientists say extreme occurrences are becoming more frequent, as a result of the global warming brought on by human activities, notably the unrestricted use of fossil fuels. Authorities in Los Angeles have implemented water restrictions such as limiting lawn irrigation to no more than eight minutes, twice weekly, as a result of reservoirs and rivers reaching historic lows. Repeat offenders are fined $200 to $600. According to the water department, progress is being made. Comparing June to the same month last year, AFP reported.
