A recent international study published in 'The Lancet Planetary Health' has shown that excessive hot temperatures at night, caused by climate change can increase the mortality rate around the planet by 60 per cent. The study co-authored by researchers from the United States, China, Germany, Japan, South Korea and Japan is the first of its kind to gauge the impact of hotter nights and increased mortality risk. Reportedly, for the study, the researchers studied deaths due to extreme heat conditions in 28 cities in China, South Korea and Japan spread over a period of 35 years from 1980 to 2015. Afterwards, the numbers were fed into two climate change modelling scenarios. The results of the model illustrated that between 2016 and 2100, the risk of deaths due to excessively hot nights may increase by 60 per cent. "In our study, we found that the occurrences of hot night excess (HNE) are projected to occur more rapidly than the daily mean temperature changes. The frequency and mean intensity of hot nights would increase more than 30 per cent and 60 per cent by the 2100s, respectively, compared with less than 20 per cent increase for the daily mean temperature." a scientist at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, associated with the study remarked. Scientists are of the view that increased night temperatures or ambient heat may interrupt an individual's physiology of sleep. Lack of sleep directly leads to problems such as immune system damage, cardiovascular disease and several other mental health conditions. Read More: Human brain not designed to stay awake past midnight. Here's why The study advised that government and policymakers ought to consider the extra health impacts of the disproportional intra-day temperature variations and design the systems in a way that addresses the issue. "Locally, heat during the night should be taken into account when designing the future heatwave warning system, especially for vulnerable populations and low-income communities who may not be able to afford the additional expense of air conditioning. Also, stronger mitigation strategies, including global collaborations, should be considered to reduce future impacts of warming." said another researcher. Concern has been raised by China's decision to stop working with the US on the climate catastrophe, and seasoned climate diplomats are calling for a quick restart of negotiations to help prevent worsening global warming.

Beijing revealed a number of actions on Friday in response to Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the US House of Representatives, visiting Taiwan, which it called a "egregious provocation." China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has conducted extensive military drills close to the island, has announced that it will no longer cooperate with the US on important matters like climate change.

With only a few months until the pivotal UN Cop27 in Egypt this fall, China's exit from climate negotiations—the amount of which is still unclear—threatens to undermine the already precarious cooperation between the world's two greatest carbon emitters. Without robust action from the US and China, which together account for nearly 40% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, experts say there is little chance of preventing catastrophic global warming.

A summer of climate change-related calamities, including record heatwaves and wildfires sweeping the US and Europe, punishingly high temperatures sweltering India and China, and disastrous flooding plaguing the US, south Asia, and Africa, has contributed to the breakdown in relations.

The US is about to enact historic climate legislation at home, but the world's nations as a whole are still not doing enough to prevent exceeding set temperature goals. António Guterres, the UN secretary-general, warned last month that the objective of keeping warming to 1.5C is "on life support" and that its pulse is deteriorating.

“US-China relations have always been a rollercoaster and we often witness flare-ups, but while you can freeze talks, you cannot freeze climate impacts,” said Laurence Tubiana, chief executive of the European Climate Foundation and a key architect of the Paris climate accords for the Guardian.

“It’s in the self-interest of China and the US to act on climate and start talking. Indeed, China recognizes its own self-interest to act; it is still committed to Paris and is moving forward on domestic pledges around methane and coal phasedown.”

At various moments in recent years, the US and China have accused one another of failing to do enough to reduce emissions that contribute to global warming. When then-president Donald Trump repealed a number of environmental regulations in 2017, China criticised the US for its "selfishness," and Joe Biden, Trump's successor, said last year that Chinese president Xi Jinping had made a "huge mistake" by skipping the Cop26 climate summit in Scotland.

However, at the same negotiations in Glasgow in November, the two countries made progress when they decided on a surprise plan to collaborate "with urgency" on reducing emissions. The delegation leader for China, Xie Zhenhua, stated that both nations must "accelerate a green and low carbon transition." The US climate envoy, John Kerry, acknowledged that there was "no shortage of differences" between the countries but insisted that "cooperation is the only way to get this work done." This is a discussion of physics and science.

According to Nate Hultman, a former Kerry adviser who is now the director of the Center for Global Sustainability at the University of Maryland, this rapprochement on climate has aided in fostering partnership between US and Chinese organisations as well as offering leadership to other nations.

According to Hultman, "the US and China cooperating is a crucial facet of addressing climate change; it has the ability to inspire others to do more."

"The overall relationship is quite complicated, but both nations recognise that this issue has a global component in addition to a bilateral one. I'm hoping that will reunite them once more. Hopefully this break won't last long, and they'll be able to resume negotiations as soon as possible.

High-level climate negotiations may now be scaled back, according to Hultman, but other bilateral cooperation may continue despite the lack of information at this time. He argued that the Cop27 discussions in Egypt may still result in progress, regardless of the state of relations between the US and China.

“This has been challenging and at times we are going to stall out,” Hultman said. “But Cop27 won’t just crash out if the US and China don’t iron out their differences. We would have to focus on what else can be done as an international community.”

Condemning China's decision to halt cooperation in a number of critical areas over Taiwan, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby called it "fundamentally irresponsible."

"They think they're punishing us by shutting down this channel," Kirby said during a White House briefing.

"They're actually punishing the whole world because the climate crisis doesn't recognise geographic boundaries and borders," he added.

Highlighting that Beijing can ease tensions over Taiwan by ending its "provocative" military drills, Kirby said US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's trip did not constitute a violation of Chinese sovereignty or America's longstanding "One China" policy.

With Chinese state news agency Xinhua describing live-fire drills and other exercises around Taiwan from Thursday (August 4) to Sunday (August 7), Chinese warplanes buzzed the line dividing the Taiwan Strait after her arrival in Taipei.

Warning China against using the visit as a pretext for military action against Taiwan, Kirby said Beijing could use "economic coercion" against Taipei beyond the military moves.

Calling China's military drills “significant escalation”, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Pelosi’s visit was peaceful and did not represent a change in American policy toward Taiwan.

The joint deal signed by former US President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping to fight climate change led to the landmark 2015 Paris agreement according to experts.

According to a survey, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has recovered from storms and bleaching events to record levels. As per officials, though this is great news, the new coral is extremely vulnerable and can quickly tarnish by climate change and other environmental threats. The northern and central parts of the reef have the highest amount of coral cover. The feedback for this proposal is being sought until 20th October, 2022 and this pledge is one of the measures under the New Building Heat Standard (NBHS). Boilers running on oil or natural gas shall be banned under the NBHS and according to the Scottish government, research into hydrogen’s ability to provide zero emissions heat is required further.

Independent research commissioned by the Scottish Government has identified different options that complement the NBHS guidelines. Under this definition, heat pumps, heat networks, electric boilers, fuel cells etc. can be installed under the NBHS proposals. Further, direct electric heaters, such as fan heaters and radiant heaters are also considered compatible.

With the UK government aiming for a Future Homes Standard for England by banning the use of existing gas boilers in new properties from 2025, Scotland is aiming to move even faster. It aims to introduce a ban on systems that completely function on fossil fuels and contribute to direct carbon emissions to produce heat.

Scotland to move towards environment-friendly heating

The world is gearing up for the 27th Conference of Paris (COP). With nations preparing to meet again to deliberate the progress since the last COP26, here is a look into what is COP26, what were its key take always and what are the challenges on its way.

What is COP?

COP stands for Conference of the Parties. COP26 refers to the most recent annual climate change conference hosted by the UN. The most recent COP summit was hosted in a partnership between UK and Italy. It was conducted from 1-12 November 2021 in Glasgow.

This year, COP27 is to take place in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt. It is important to note that this conference is held every year by the world’s governments and is attended by the countries that signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

What is UNFCCC?

The UNFCCC entered into force on March 21, 1994, and has been ratified by 197 countries. It was signed in 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development which is also known as the Earth Summit, the Rio Conference or the Rio Summit.

Which environmental issues were the main focus of COP26?

Coal: It is responsible for 40 per cent of annual CO2 emissions and 64 per cent of the world’s CO2 emissions. COP26 set targets to reduce the use of coal. The major takeaway was the agreement to work on the inefficient oil and gas subsidies i.e. the government payments that artificially lower the price of fossil fuels.

Deforestation: It is another significant global issue. More than 100 countries pledged to stop deforestation by 2030. It is noteworthy that these 100 countries have about 85 per cent of the world’s forests. Deforestation is a crucial issue as trees absorb nearly 10 per cent of CO2 which is emitted every year.

Climate finance: Finance is essential to combat climate issues at a global level. All the developed and rich countries have agreed to contribute nearly 72 billion pounds a year to developing countries for climate action by 2022 end. This pledge was missing in 2020 and hence, was an important part of COP26.

What was the key takeaway from COP26?

At COP26, countries were urged to strengthen their 2030 targets by COP27. It was targeted that global warming should not exceed +1.5 degrees Celsius. Nearly 140 countries announced set target dates for bringing down the emissions to a net zero.

The highlight of COP26 was the Glasgow climate pact. This pact was endorsed by 42 countries as a cooperative effort to accelerate the development and deployment of clean technologies. It also aims at sustainable solutions in areas such as clean power, road transport, steel and hydrogen.

What are the major challenges?

The targets set at COP26 are voluntary with no definitive penalties or enforcement mechanism in place. In fact, many targets are subject to provisions based on the availability of financial support. Further, there is a lack of clarity on particular actions that will be taken by countries to achieve the goals.

The biggest challenge arises with the carbon budget. Carbon budget distribution across the nations is widely questionable. For example, the top three emitters are China, the USA and Europe and account for about 30 per cent of the world’s population. This means that they would take up to 78 per cent of the carbon budget.

Thus, with active efforts to combat climate change and rectifications from COP26, COP27 might have a lot to offer in tackling the global climate crisis.

The world is gearing up for the 27th Conference of Paris (COP). With nations preparing to meet again to deliberate the progress since the last COP26, here is a look into what is COP26, what were its key take always and what are the challenges on its way.

Also read | Tonga underwater volcano impact can affect ozone layer: Here's what you should know What is UNFCCC? WION Explains | COP26: What, Why, How and Where?

A team of international experts headed by Cambridge University in England have issued a warning stating that even as nations set goals to reduce emissions, we should be prepared for failure in the future. They have cautioned that the world needs to start preparing for the possibility of a "climate endgame" as extreme weather events keep destroying the planet. This report highlights “four horsemen” of the climate endgame: extreme weather, conflict, infectious diseases and famine. According to this report, world leaders need to investigate the possible outcomes of climate change, ranging from a loss of 10 per cent of the global population to gradual human extinction.

Scientists have further noted that with the current level of emissions and population trends, two billion people could live in places with an annual average temperature of more than 84 degrees Fahrenheit. This extreme temperature trend is found in less than one per cent of Earth’s land surface area and is likely to happen within fifty years.

The ill effects of climate change have taken the world by storm. Across the globe, countries are battling wildfires, droughts and catastrophic flooding. Though the conversation has always been around preventing the situation from getting worse, the United Nations has issued a dire warning that requests all the nations to dig deeper into the issue.

The world needs to think about worst case scenario as extreme weather conditions become a global challenge

The Fiji villages are inundated by rising sea levels, demanding the big emitters to pay. The villagers say that the developed nations who contributed the most to global warming must protect the victims of their actions.

While rising temperature has become a global concern, China’s weather bureau has warned that its ground temperatures are rising faster than the global average. Declaring the country as “a sensitive region in global climate change”, the weather bureau has raised severe concerns over the increase in temperature.

In the past seven decades, China’s average ground temperatures have risen far faster than the global average. It is expected to remain “significantly higher” in the future as per government officials because of an increase in the global climate challenges.

In its recent annual climate assessment which was published this week, the weather bureau of China has said that the temperatures are rising 0.26 degrees Celsius, every decade since 1951. This is much fast-paced in comparison to the global average of 0.15 degrees.

In fact, China's 2021 climate assessment revealed that the coastal water levels last year were at their highest since 1980. The sea ice continued to decline with an accelerated glacial retreat. Further, active permafrost along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway was observed to be at a record high.

Yuan Jiashuang, vice-director of China's National Climate Center (NCC) has warned that changing temperature patterns in China will affect the balance of water resources, make ecosystems more vulnerable and reduce crop yields. He has also added, "in the future, the increase in regional average temperatures in China will be significantly higher than the world,"

China has previously persevered through long stretches of hot climate, with temperature reaching in excess of 44C in Hebei in the north and southwestern Yunnan. More than 130 Chinese weather stations have recorded alarming temperatures that have broken historical records. According to NCC data, these numbers are up from 62 in 2021.

Deteriorating climatic conditions with extreme weather have raised global alarms as of late along with extended heatwaves causing dry seasons and timberland fires across the globe.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cautioned last month that "no nation is immune" from climate change and warned that the world now had to choose between "collective action or collective suicide".

The intense Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption on January 15, 2022, broke all records for direct injection of water vapour by a volcano or otherwise in the "satellite era". It also sent enormous volumes of ash into the stratosphere. According to a study that was published in Geophysical Letters, the powerful explosion sprayed water vapour up to heights of 53 km. “Tonga eruption may be the first volcanic eruption observed to impact climate not through surface cooling caused by volcanic sulfate aerosols, but rather through surface warming caused by excess water vapour,” the study noted.

The explosion shook the entire world, making the atmosphere "ring like a bell" and causing tsunamis to pound adjacent coastlines. More than 590,000 lightning strikes occurred over the course of three days due to the eruption. Its ash and dust cloud went higher into the atmosphere than any previous eruption in history.

The enormous explosion released several poisonous gases and a great deal of water into the atmosphere, both of which are now damaging the stratosphere of our planet.

How much water was spewed by the volcano?

According to specialists from, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the University of Edinburgh, and NorthWest Research Associates, the eruption injected an unparalleled amount of water—enough to fill 58,000 Olympic-size swimming pools.

Large volumes of SO2 are typically released into the atmosphere during volcanic eruptions, which cools the globe. Surprisingly, Tonga did not emit a lot of HCl or SO2.

The gender gap in Florida is being exacerbated by climate change. Due to recent heatwaves, the sand has been heated to such an extent that nearly all turtles born are females. The National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) claims that the sex of sea turtles and alligators is determined by the temperature of developing eggs rather than during fertilisation. According to the NOAA’s Ocean Service website, a turtle’s eggs will hatch into male turtles if the temperature is below 81.86 Fahrenheit (Celsius 27.7) and female turtles if the temperature is over 88.8 Fahrenheit (31 C).

The manager of the turtle hospital in Marathon, Florida Keys, Bette Zirkelbach, stated that the last four summers in Florida were the hottest ones and it is a matter of concern. According to Zirkelbach, "Scientists that are studying sea turtle hatchlings and eggs have found no boy sea turtles, so only female sea turtles for the past four years," Reuters reported. He further stated that, according to research conducted in Australia, 99 per cent of new sea turtles born were females.

Hotter summer means more female sea turtles in Florida

Florida sea turtles are grappling with a gender imbalance. Research shows that if a turtle's eggs incubate below 27.7 degrees Celsius, the turtle hatchlings will be male but if the eggs incubate above 31 degrees Celsius then the hatchlings will be female. Recent heat waves made worse by climate change have caused the sand on some beaches to get so hot that nearly every turtle born was female.

The term climate change was first heard of in 1980s before that the world used to describe extreme weather events with global warming. Scientists have been looking into the long term alterations in earth's climate since decades now and have been issuing warning since then. Its been almost half a century and scientists now think we might have reached the stage that they call 'Endgame'.

The government noted on Wednesday (August 3) that temperatures in India have increased during the monsoon season and the country might see more frequent heatwaves in the coming days, though the deaths related to heatwaves have certainly decreased recently. India experienced its hottest March in more than a century. Extreme high temperatures also occurred in April and May; climate change is the primary reason for it. According to India’s minister of science, technology, and earth sciences, Jitendra Singh, "The average temperature during the monsoon season is found to be rising in the last two decades," Reuters reported.

India reported 24 fatalities caused by heatwaves up to July, compared to none for the entire previous year and 25 deaths in the year 2020. A multi-year high, 505 deaths, occurred in the year 2019.

Heatwaves increasing in India during monsoon season but related fatalities fall

Hothouse Earth, Bill McGuire's most recent book, couldn't have come out at a better moment. It will be available in stores this week, where it will be browsed by readers who have just experienced record-breaking heat in the UK and now fear additional weeks of drought.

McGuire, an emeritus professor of geophysical and climate hazards at University College London, says that this is only the beginning. We have — for far too long — disregarded unequivocal warnings that rising carbon emissions are gravely warming the Earth, as he makes clear in his harsh description of the impending climate catastrophe. Now, that we have become complacent, we will pay for it with storms, floods, droughts, and heatwaves that will easily transcend the extremes of the past.

He contends that the most important issue is that there is no longer any way for us to prevent a dangerous, all-pervasive climatic breakdown. A future where deadly heatwaves and temperatures above 50ºC (120ºF) are common in the tropics, where summers at temperate latitudes will always be scorching hot, and where our oceans are doomed to become heated and acidic is what we may expect now that we have crossed the point of no return. According to McGuire, “A child born in 2020 will face a far more hostile world than its grandparents did.”

The revelation that a temperature of 40.3ºC was registered in east England on July 19—the highest ever recorded in the UK—was one of the records broken during the book's editing. This year has also seen the ravaging of wildfires of previously unheard-of intensity and ferocity across Europe, North America, and Australia, while record rainfall in the midwest caused the catastrophic flooding in the US's Yellowstone national park.

Total climate meltdown cannot be stopped, point of no return reached: Experts

By the end of the decade, a national hosepipe ban and mandatory water measuring should be adopted throughout the United Kingdom, a message advisers have provided to the government as they prepare for a drought that threatens to cause significant disruption. In future, people will have to stand in lines to buy emergency bottled water from the back of lorries. The National Infrastructure Committee (NIC) forewarned the government four years ago that significant new investments in the country’s water supply infrastructure would be necessary by the 2030s. However, water companies made several changes, but every day, around 3 billion litres of water are still lost, The Guardian reported.

According to the chair of the committee, Sir John Armitt, in conversation with the Observer, plugging these leaks will cost somewhere around £20 billion. He continued by saying that if investments are not made now, it will cost more than twice as much to deliver bottled water to UK homes by a lorry when droughts hit the country more frequently.

Water measuring is considered the best way to reduce water use in the UK which has the highest water consumption in Europe. However, roughly around half of the households in England and Wales are expected to have water meters installed, and it was found that users with metered connections use 33 litres a day less than the 141 litres per day national average.

The Rivers Trust, one of the key organisations at the emergency National Drought Group meeting the government called last week as dry conditions expanded throughout England, supported the NIC’s appeal. Critics claim that despite numerous warnings, the government appears to have done nothing.

As per the Met Office, July was the driest month on record since 1911, with barely 24 per cent of the usual amount of rain for the month. The south and east are particularly hard hit, with July’s rainfall being just 14 per of the normal July from 2010 to 2020.

The demand for mandatory water metering was denied by the Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs.

Since losing the condiment that gives a steak frites edge, life to a grilled sausage, depth to a vinaigrette, and richness to mayonnaise, France has been searching for substitutes in quiet desperation.

The candidates now include shallots, horseradish, wasabi, Worcestershire sauce, and even creams of Roquefort.

Some people feel personally affected by the severe weather that destroyed the supply of mustard seeds in and outside of France, as well as by the supply chain disruptions brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, which are still having an impact today.

Calls to domestically produce mustard seeds are being made in response to the shortage in order to rely less on foreign suppliers.

France faces mustard shortage, prices shoot up, locals scour for substitutes

Britain sizzled this year due to scorching heat waves. The temperatures shattered old records as the European nation struggled to deal with the sharp rise in mercury. Now, researchers at World Weather Attribution have revealed that climate change made the record heatwave ten times more likely.

The team of researchers found that if it had not been for climate change, caused by excessive human activities, the heatwave temperatures would have been 4ºC cooler.

To gauge whether the heatwave was a byproduct of climate change, the researchers compared climate as it is today with the climate of the past, say the industrial age, using weather data and computer simulations.

The results of the analysis were frightening, to say the least. Europe and other parts of the world are increasingly becoming hotter and experiencing frequent heatwaves, eclipsing the estimates made by several climate models.

The model results also suggested that there is a one per cent chance that such a heatwave could be repeated next year as well.

The world has already warmed by around 1.1ºC, since the beginning of the industrial age. The temperatures will continue to rise until worldwide governments drastically reduce emissions.

Such has been the effect of rising temperatures in the UK that communities have started requesting the government to draw up a heat risk strategy plan which included updating housing stock and ensuring new buildings cool down in hot weather.

Australia’s parliament convened on Tuesday (July 26) in Canberra for the first time since the Australian Labor Party took control, underlining people’s concerns about climate change amid worsening bushfires and floods. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that his party, which has a majority in the lower house, will introduce 18 pieces of legislation. Among them is the climate change bill that would set a target of a 43 per cent reduction in emissions by 2030, which the previous conservation Liberal party had opposed. As per the Minister of Climate and Energy Chris Bowen, the government would make small phrasing changes, but had mandates for its climate policy, Reuters reported.

The election saw the Green Party gain record seats. For the measure to pass the upper house, Labor Party requires the support of the Greens, who possess 12 Senate addition to at least one independent. However, Adam Bandt, the leader of the Greens is in talks with the government had stated that the 43 per cent objective was ‘modest’ and that the Labor party did so by keeping coal-fired power plants on the grid.
