The United Kingdom witnessed its hottest June since recordkeeping began 139 years ago, said the country’s Met Office, on Monday (July 3). The recent record also surpassed the last hottest June by nearly a full degree.

The British weather agency also noted that the UK, as well as England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, surpassed their respective warmest June in a series which dates back to 1884 some by a “significant margin".

Warmest June on record in the UK

According to the data by the Met Office, in June, the average monthly temperature of 15.8 degree Celsius exceeded the previously recorded highest average in 1940 and 1976 by 0.9 degree Celsius.

The records were broken in 72 of 97 areas in the UK from where temperature data is collected, reported the Met Office. Additionally, the mid-month heat, last month, was 15.8 degree Celsius which is also 2.5 degree Celsius higher than average.

“It’s officially the hottest June on record for the UK, for mean temperature as well as average maximum and minimum temperature,” said Met Office’s Mark McCarthy, in a statement.

He added, “June started with a good deal of high pressure and temperatures initially around average for many, but once that subsided, warm, humid air began to influence temperatures, with 32.2 degree Celsius the highest temperatures reached.”

Less rain and more sunshine across the UK

This also comes as rain was in short supply across the UK in the month of June with just 68 per cent of the monthly average rainfall. According to the Met Office data, it was also the fourth sunniest June on record and drier than usual in the country.

The UK witnessed its sunniest June since 1957. The report noted that Wales was “particularly dry”, receiving 51 per cent of its average monthly rainfall. Meanwhile, Scotland witnessed its third sunniest June on record with 231.4 hours of sunshine and England had its fourth sunniest with 259.8 hours.

A study conducted by Met Office scientists has attributed this rise in temperatures to both natural causes as well as human-induced climate change. “We found that the chance of observing a June beating the previous joint 1940/1976 record of 14.9 degree Celsius has at least doubled since the 1940s,” said Paul Davies, Met Office climate extremes principal fellow and chief meteorologist.

Furthermore, he also explained how using the UKCP18 (UK Climate Projections) climate projections scientists noted a “difference in the frequency of these sorts of extremes depending on the emissions scenario we follow in the future.” Therefore, by the 2050s, the chances of crossing 14.9 degree Celsius increase by as much as 50 per cent.

“Beyond the 2050s the likelihood is strongly governed by our emissions of greenhouse gasses, with the chance increasing further in a high emissions scenario but levelling off under mitigation,” said Davies.

'Unprecedented': Thousands of fishes killed due to heat

UK witnesses hottest June since recordkeeping began nearly 140 years ago: Met Office

We're facing the biggest environmental challenge. Climate change is affecting every form of life. While Nations around the world are finding measures to deal with it. The US is aiming to stop sunrays from reaching the Earth. The US is looking forward to quite an innovative way to combat the effects of climate change.

Why is the White House pushing to block sunlight from reaching the Earth?

Is climate causing our brains to shrink? A recent study conducted by cognitive scientist Jeff Morgan Stibel from the Natural History Museum in California has uncovered a surprising link between climate change and a decline in the size of the human brain.

By analysing climate records and human remains spanning a 50,000-year period, Stibel's research sheds light on how humans develop and adapt in response to environmental stress, according to Science Alert. The findings, published in a paper, underscore the importance of understanding the impact of climate change on human brain size and, ultimately, human behaviour.

Stibel's investigation involved examining 298 specimens from the past 50,000 years, alongside natural records of global temperature, humidity, and rainfall.

What does the study reveal?

The results revealed a significant reduction in average brain size during periods of warmer climates compared to cooler ones. Stibel's earlier research on brain shrinkage served as the impetus for this study, as he sought to uncover the underlying causes behind this phenomenon.

In an interview with PsyPost's Mane Kara-Yakoubian, Stibel emphasised the critical need to comprehend changes in the human brain over time. He expressed his disappointment at the lack of research on this subject, stating, "We know the brain has grown across species over the past few million years, but we know very little about other macro-evolutionary trends."

To gather data, Stibel collected information on skull sizes from 10 published sources, resulting in 373 measurements taken from 298 human bones spanning 50,000 years.

To estimate brain sizes accurately, he adjusted for geographical region and gender by including estimations of body size.

To account for potential dating errors, Stibel categorised the fossils into groups based on their age and conducted his analysis using four different fossil age spans.

Additionally, he compared brain size to four climate records, including temperature data from the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) Dome C, which provides precise temperature measurements spanning over 800,000 years.

Over the past 50,000 years, the Earth has experienced various climate fluctuations, including the Last Glacial Maximum, a period characterised by consistently colder temperatures until the end of the Late Pleistocene. Following this, the Holocene period witnessed rising average temperatures, leading up to the present day.

Stibel's analysis revealed a consistent pattern of changing brain size in Homo, correlated with fluctuations in climate as temperatures rose and fell.

Notably, humans experienced a significant decline in average brain size, amounting to just over 10.7 per cent, throughout the Holocene warming period, which occurred approximately 17,000 years after the last glacial maximum.

According to Stibel, brain size changes tend to occur thousands of years after the climate changes, suggesting that species-level adaptation often requires multiple generations. This evolutionary pattern manifested within a relatively brief period of 5,000 to 17,000 years, raising concerns about the potentially detrimental effects of ongoing global warming on human cognition.

Stibel argues that even a slight reduction in brain size among contemporary humans could have significant physiological implications that are not yet fully understood.

Furthermore, the analysis revealed that humidity and rainfall levels also influenced brain growth, albeit to a lesser extent compared to temperature. Dry spells exhibited a weak correlation with slightly larger brain volumes.

While the study establishes a clear relationship between climate change and differences in brain size, it acknowledges that climate alone does not account for all observed variations.

Stibel suggests that other factors such as ecosystem elements, indirect climate effects (such as, vegetation and net primary production), or non-climate factors like culture and technology could also contribute to changes in brain size.

Rising sea surface temperatures are yet another example of the effects of climate change on our planet, and it's impact is most noticeable on the earth's poles. The amount of sea ice around antarctica is now at the lowest levels ever recorded at the end of June. According to UK's MET office. The current Antarctic sea ice extent is more than 1.3 million square kilometres less than the next lowest amount for this time of year and this shortfall is more than five times the surface area of UK. Experts from the met office say Antarctic sea ice extent reaches a maximum around the end of September and a minimum around the end of February.

White House report hints at blocking sunlight to cool planet Earth

A recent study has revealed that volcanic eruptions are becoming more frequent as a result of climate change. Volcanologist Jonathan Fink and Associate Professor of Geography Idowu "Jola" Ajibade conducted the research to understand how climate change affects the frequency of volcanic eruptions and other consequences. They also examined how volcanic activities might change in the future, based on the limited knowledge about the phenomenon that scientists possess today.

Fink explained that the field of volcano science progresses steadily alongside technological advancements but can also undergo abrupt and significant changes in response to particularly large or impactful eruptions. The study was aimed at assessing how volcanic behaviour may alter over time as climate change continues to, directly and indirectly, influence volcanic activities.

Injecting artificial coolant into the earth?

According to Fink, rising sea levels, melting glaciers, depletion of aquifers, and erosion of mountains can all impact the likelihood and frequency of volcanic eruptions.

He also mentioned that as climate change's impact on society intensifies, there is a growing interest in exploring "geoengineering" solutions such as injecting aerosols into the stratosphere to cool the Earth's surface.

Pacific Northwest region most affected

Additionally, the study highlighted that the Pacific Northwest region in North America has experienced an increasing frequency and overlap of various natural and human-induced disasters over the past two decades.

The region is prone to volcanic eruptions of varying scales, subduction zone earthquakes, devastating wildfires, harmful smoke events, tsunamis, landslides, floods, and heat dome events. Fink cautioned that the likelihood of volcanic eruptions coinciding with climate-related storms, droughts, floods, and other disasters is rising, posing challenges for planning and responding to environmental crises.

How are climate change and volcanic eruptions linked?

A NASA entry explained that volcanic eruptions are often discussed in the context of climate change because they release carbon dioxide (CO2) and other gases into the atmosphere. Climate scientists study volcanic eruptions to better understand short periods of cooling in the Earth's history.

Occasionally, volcanic eruptions occur that emit a large number of particles and gases. Super volcanoes like Yellowstone or Mount Toba produce the most significant eruptions, but they happen very rarely, around every 100,000 to 200,000 years or even longer.

Also read: Mexico: `El Popo` volcano spews plumes of smoke high into sky Occasionally, volcanic eruptions occur that emit a large number of particles and gases. Super volcanoes like Yellowstone or Mount Toba produce the most significant eruptions, but they happen very rarely, around every 100,000 to 200,000 years or even longer. WATCH WION LIVE HERE ×

UK environment minister Lord Zac Goldsmith has tendered his resignation citing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's lack of interest in addressing climate change, media reports said. Lord Goldsmith expressed his dismay for "uninterested" Sunak and the government's indifference towards environmental issues, which led him to find it "untenable" to continue serving as the environment minister.

His resignation letter strongly criticised the government's abandonment of environmental commitments and withdrawal of global leadership. UK environment minister Zac Goldsmith resigns, accuses Rishi Sunak of neglecting climate change

A study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, on Wednesday (June 28) found that an increase in temperatures leads to a substantial rise in domestic violence against women.

The South Asia-based study looks at three countries, India, Pakistan, and Nepal between 2010 and 2018, where thousands of girls and women spoke about their experience of emotional, physical and sexual violence.

It also noted that without any steps taken to limit emissions which contribute to global warming and climate change, in the 2090s, India might experience the highest rate of violence against women among the three countries studied.

What did the study find?

According to the study, one degree Celsius rise in average annual temperature was linked to an increase of more than 6.3 per cent in incidents of physical and sexual domestic violence across the three countries.

The researchers tracked 194,871 girls and women aged between 15 and 49 to study the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) and its types which include physical, sexual, and emotional violence across India, Pakistan and Nepal.

“A significant association was found between high ambient temperature and the prevalence of IPV against women,” said the study, adding that with every one degree Celsius increase in the annual mean temperature, they noted a total of 4.49 per cent IPV prevalence.

The research also projected that IPV prevalence would increase by as much as 21 per cent by the end of this century under the “unlimited emissions scenarios.” However, if steps are taken to curb emissions contributing to climate change and global warming, the IPV prevalence would “moderately increase,” said the researchers.

In its projected increase in violence, the study also found that physical (28.3 per cent) and sexual violence (26.1 per cent) were significantly higher than emotional (8.9 per cent).

Speaking about the findings of the research, Michelle Bell, a professor of environmental health at Yale University and a co-author of the study, said there were “many potential pathways, both physiological and sociological, through which higher temperature could affect risk of violence”.

According to the study, India is projected to witness the highest IPV prevalence in the 2090s among the three countries with 23.5 per cent when compared to Nepal (14.8 per cent) and Pakistan (5.9 per cent). This comes as India witnessed several heat-related deaths, earlier this year, with temperatures up to 45 degree Celsius in certain parts of the country.

New research has highlighted damning figures as it revealed that an area equivalent to the size of Switzerland was cleared from Earth's rainforests in 2022. The report comes after a number of pledges globally to take definitive steps to end deforestation by 2030.

The report by the World Resources Institute's (WRI) Global Forest Watch said that a massive chunk of the tropical forest disappeared as forest destruction rose by 10 per cent compared to the previous year.

The report also stated that the rate of loss was equivalent to losing 11 soccer fields of forest per minute, as swaths of tropical forest were cleared for farming, mining and other commercial activities.

The report mentioned that tropical primary forest loss in 2022 totalled 4.1 million hectares. It further added that all this forest loss produced 2.7 gigatonnes (Gt) of carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to India's annual fossil fuel emissions.

According to the report, Brazil and the Dominican Republic of Congo are the top countries for primary forest loss by area in 2022, and in nations like Ghana and Bolivia, it rapidly increased. On the other hand, countries like Indonesia and Malaysia have managed to keep rates of primary forest loss near record-low levels.

Dire status of the Brazilian Amazon

According to the report, the rate of primary forest loss increased by 15 per cent from 2021 to 2022 in Brazil and the vast majority of primary forest loss happened in the Amazon.

The report mentioned that non-fire-related losses reached the highest level since 2005. Such instances in the Brazilian Amazon are most often due to clear-cut deforestation.

During the last year of Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro's administration, a high rate of primary forest loss occurred, which was an important agenda for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Lula) during the election.

After winning the election, he even laid out a plan to end illegal deforestation in the Amazon, which was a major campaign pledge that is a critical step in addressing the country's significant carbon emissions from the region.

Just a few days after the election result, Lula and his Environment Minister Marina Silva unveiled the Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Amazon.

Some scientists have issued a warning that the Amazon is approaching a critical tipping point that could see the rainforest transform into a grassy savannah. In case it happened, this would cause a massive impact on the world's ability to tackle the climate crisis.

Also read: Dolphins pamper their little ones with ‘baby talk’, a study tells how Dire status of the Brazilian Amazon According to the report, the rate of primary forest loss increased by 15 per cent from 2021 to 2022 in Brazil and the vast majority of primary forest loss happened in the Amazon.
A climate report on Monday claimed that Europe needs to brace itself for more deadly heatwaves which are led by climate change, emphasising that it has emerged as the fastest-warming continent of the world, with its temperature rising by 2.3 degree Celsius last year compared to that in pre-industrial times.

The report, prepared by the World Meteorological Organisation and the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, said that the increasing temperature will lead to record sea-surface temperatures, unprecedented glacier melt and crop-withering drought.

Since the 1980s, Europe has been warming twice the global average and witnessed its warmest summer on record last year as countries like France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom faced their warmest year on record.

Since the mid-1800s, the world has warmed at an average of around 1.2C, leading to a devastating cascade of extreme weather, which includes more severe droughts in a few areas, more intense heatwaves and storms which will be made more ferocious by rising seas.

Vulnerable people, poorest countries hardest hit

The most vulnerable people and the poorest countries of the world will be the hardest hit, who have not taken enough steps to contribute to the fossil fuel emissions that increase temperatures. However, the impact of climate change has been becoming increasingly severe across the world, as rapid warming can be witnessed in regions in the northern hemisphere and around the poles.

The high temperatures in Europe "exacerbated the severe and widespread drought conditions, fuelled violent wildfires that resulted in the second largest burnt area on record, and led to thousands of heat-associated excess deaths," stated WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.

Across the continent, temperatures rose 1.5C in 30 years from 1991 to 2021, as per the report of The State of the Climate in Europe 2022. The report stated that last year severe heat killed more than 16,000 people, while damages caused by floods and storms accounted for $2 billion.

"Unfortunately, this cannot be considered a one-off occurrence or an oddity of the climate," stated Copernicus Director Carlo Buontempo in the report.

"Our current understanding of the climate system and its evolution informs us that these kinds of events are part of a pattern that will make heat stress extremes more frequent and more intense across the region," he added.

The report stated that economies and ecosystems have suffered due to increasing temperatures. A new record mass loss was recorded by the glaciers in the Alps in 2022, which is caused by a hot summer, very low winter levels of snow, as well as deposits of wind-blown Saharan dust.

"Solar and wind tend to complement each other throughout the year: solar radiation is higher in late spring and summer while wind intensity is usually higher in winter," the report stated.

While there has been no significant trend in wind or rain patterns in Europe over the last 30 years, the report said there was a marked increase in sunlight, with 2022 seeing the highest amount of solar radiation since recordkeeping began in 1983.

WATCH | Climate change can trigger deadly tsunamis: Study The report stated that economies and ecosystems have suffered due to increasing temperatures.
