Microorganisms' ability to adapt to the climate change can help reduce global warming by storing carbon in the soil, a recent study from Lund University in Sweden claims.

The researchers collected soil samples from across Europe in a wide range of temperatures, from minus 3.1 to 18.3 degrees Celsius. The samples unveiled microorganisms that are present in soil, such as bacteria and fungi, which are strongly adapted to their local climate for their growth and respiration.&nbsp;

The researchers also surprisingly demonstrated that the microorganisms can not only adapt to temperature changes but also benefit from them.

“Despite decades of scientific pondering, researchers have not been able to determine whether microorganisms can adapt to warming, and if they do. We can now confirm that this is the case, and that the organisms can actually mitigate climate warming,” says Carla Cruz Paredes, a biology researcher at Lund University.

<h2>Differences in microorganisms' temperature sensitivity can predict how global warming can affect soil</h2>

Published in the scientific journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, the new study also reveals that the groups of microorganisms react differently to warming.

Bacteria and fungi react differently when it comes to temperature change as bacteria is more sensitive than fungi.

The differences in the temperature sensitivity hold significance for predicting the carbon losses that are likely to happen in the future and the way the soil can be affected by global warming.

“The outcome of these varying sensitivities to growth and respiration at different temperatures, and between bacteria and fungi, will impact the carbon balance between the soil and the atmosphere, and thus the soil’s feedback on climate warming,” says Carla Cruz Paredes.

The study also emphasizes on the importance of correctly representing microbial responses to climate warming in models of soil carbon content. The research also indicates that ecological responses from the Earth's microorganisms will play a key role in regulating the planet's climate.

"Climate warming is one of the biggest threats to our environment. To mitigate global warming, it is necessary to enhance the soil’s ability to store or sequester carbon and reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere. This study is a step forward in providing better predictions for the assessments of the UN’s climate panel," says Carla Cruz Paredes.

Over 130 lawmakers from the European Union and the United States are urging the removal of oil executive Sultan Al Jaber as the president of the upcoming COP28 climate talks. In a joint letter addressed to the United Nations, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and US President Joe Biden, the lawmakers have expressed concerns about the influence of fossil fuel companies on the negotiations.&nbsp;

<h2>Why are the&nbsp;lawmakers seeking Al Jaber's removal?</h2>

The appointment of Al Jaber, who heads the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, as the COP28 chief has been controversial since its very announcement.

The lawmakers argue that having an oil company executive leading the talks poses a risk of undermining the negotiations, particularly as Al Jaber's company plans to significantly increase oil production, potentially exceeding the global warming limits set through the COP process.

<h2>What does the letter say?</h2>

The letter as per Politico, warns that fossil fuel companies may exert "undue influence" over the negotiations, set to happen in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the end of the year.&nbsp;

The United Nations agency published new figures on Monday (May 22) which indicated that extreme weather events caused nearly 600 disasters in India which claimed 138,377 lives&nbsp;in the past five decades. The World Meteorological Department (WMO) report also noted that such events have caused the death of two million people and $4.3 trillion in economic damage in the same time period.&nbsp;

<h2>UN report about Asia</h2>

According to the report by the UN agency, more than 90 per cent of&nbsp;reported deaths across the world occurred in developing countries. The WMO said that between 1970 and 2021, Asia accounted for nearly 50 per cent of all reported deaths worldwide.&nbsp;

India witnessed &nbsp;573 disasters in the span of five decades which claimed the lives of 138,377 people between 1970 and 2021. According to the WMO, tropical cyclones are the leading cause of reported deaths in the continent. It said that&nbsp;tropical cyclone Nargis, which occurred in 2008, led to 138,366 deaths.&nbsp;

Furthermore, Bangladesh reported the highest number of casualties in Asia across 281 disasters. “The most vulnerable communities, unfortunately, bear the brunt of weather, climate and water-related hazards,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.

Taalas cited&nbsp;the most recent example of the extremely severe cyclonic storm Mocha which wreaked havoc in Myanmar and Bangladesh last week, which exemplified this reality. He added the severe storm has “caused widespread devastation…impacting the poorest of the poor”.&nbsp;

<h2>Indian researchers echo warnings&nbsp;</h2>

Last year, a report released by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, said that the frequency of extreme weather events such as floods and heatwaves is projected to significantly rise in the country due to climate change.

Meteorologists had&nbsp;previously warned about climate change increasing the instability in the atmosphere due to a rise in convective activity like thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain events, as per the news agency PTI. Additionally, global warming has also led to cyclonic storms in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea to be longer and more intense than before.&nbsp;

<h2>Early warning systems for all</h2>

The findings in question were released at the quadrennial World Meteorological Congress in Geneva, Switzerland during high-level talks for ramping up action to ensure that early warning services reach everyone on earth.&nbsp;

The ‘United Nations Early Warnings for All initiative’ aims to make early warning services available for everyone by the end of 2027. WMO said Monday that 22,608 disaster deaths were recorded globally in 2020 and 2021 combined.&nbsp;

“Thanks to early warnings and disaster management these catastrophic mortality rates are now thankfully history,” the report noted, adding that “early warnings save lives”.&nbsp;

Climate change, extreme weather have led to hundreds of thousands of deaths in India: UN

Researchers warned on Monday (May 22) that more than a fifth of the human population will face extreme and probably life-threatening heat by 2100 if current policies to limit global warming continue. The report was published in the journal Nature Sustainability, reported AFP.

According to the report, the countries with the most people at risk are India (600 million), Nigeria (300 million), Indonesia (100 million), the Philippines and Pakistan (80 million each).

"That's a profound reshaping of the habitability of the surface of the planet, and could lead potentially to the large-scale reorganisation of where people live," said lead author Tim Lenton, director of the Global Systems Institute at the University of Exeter.

The findings underlined the immediate need to take steps in order to cap global warming at 1.5C. It said that doing so would sharply reduce the number of those at risk. The number would fall to half a billion. This will be around five&nbsp;per cent of the projected 9.5 billion global population.

Just under 1.2C of warming, to date, has already amplified the intensity or duration of heatwaves, droughts and wildfires beyond what could have occurred minus the carbon pollution generated by burning fossil fuels and forests. The last eight years were the hottest on record.

"The costs of global warming are often expressed in financial terms, but our study highlights the phenomenal human cost of failing to tackle the climate emergency," said Lenton.

"For every 0.1C of warming above present levels, about 140 million more people will be exposed to dangerous heat."

<h2>The threshold for 'dangerous heat'</h2>

The new findings have found the threshold for 'dangerous heat'. The report says that it is at a mean annual temperature (MAT) of 29C.

Historically, human settlements have been densest around two MATs. 13C when it comes to temperate zones and 27C in more tropical climes.

Global warming is pushing up the thermostat everywhere, but the risk of tipping into lethal heat is clearly higher in regions already close to the 29C red line.

Studies have reportedly shown that sustained high temperatures at or beyond this threshold have strong links to greater mortality, and reduced productivity of labour and crop yields. This also increases the likelihood of more conflict and infectious diseases.

As recently as 40 years ago, only 12 million people worldwide were exposed to such extremes.&nbsp;

That number has today increased five-fold, and will climb ever more steeply in the coming decades, the study found.&nbsp;

'Dangerous heat' set to affect billions by 2100: Study

With each passing day, climate change is becoming a topic of global significance. Recently, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned that the world was already only a few tenths of a degree away from the global target of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The IPCC&nbsp;said that there are multiple, feasible and effective options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to human-caused climate change.&nbsp;

According to a report by BBC on Sunday (May 21), scientists at United Nations (UN) are clear that&nbsp;reducing greenhouse gas emissions alone would not be enough to stop dangerous levels of warming. They said&nbsp;there would need to be some carbon dioxide removal - actively taking it out of the atmosphere.

Now, a process called "enhanced rock weathering" could help to cool our overheating planet.&nbsp;

<h2>What is enhanced rock weathering?</h2>

Enhanced rock weathering is a nature-based carbon removal technology that permanently locks away Carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere. UNDO, a company that does enhanced rock weathering,&nbsp;said the process has happened for millions of years but the company speeds it up.&nbsp;
<img alt="How does rock weathering work. (Image source: UNDO)" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="1977272c-290f-45c9-9033-15cc9f62d269" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/rock%20weathering.jpg" />
"For millions of years, carbon dioxide has combined with rainwater to form carbonic acid. When this dilute acid falls on mountains, forests and grassland, the CO₂ interacts with the rocks and soil, mineralises and is safely stored in carbonate form," the UNDO says on its website.&nbsp;

The company points out that natural rock weathering takes hundreds of years and there is no time to wait.&nbsp;

<h2>How does rock weathering work?</h2>

The UNDO said that it enhances and accelerates enhanced rock weathering "by spreading crushed basalt rock on farmland, increasing the surface area of the rock and giving it immediate contact with the CO₂ produced by plant roots and soil microbes."

Enhanced rock weathering uses tiny pieces to increase the amount of contact between the rain and rock and hence the amount of weathering and carbon removal, the BBC reported.&nbsp;As a cliff, or piled up in the quarry, basalt weathers very slowly. And to maximise the carbon removal it needs to be spread across a greater area.

The UNDO said it focused on basalt rock as it is highly reactive,&nbsp;weathering quickly to speed up the sequestration of&nbsp;CO₂.&nbsp;

The company points out that safe to use and offers significant co-benefits for crop and soil health. This year, the UNDO is planning to spread&nbsp;185,000 tonnes of basalt and hopes by 2025 to have removed a million tonnes of CO2.

<h2>What do experts say?</h2>

Experts worry that&nbsp;carbon removal techniques like enhanced rock weathering&nbsp;might distract people from the priority of cutting emissions and even be used as justification to continue living our carbon-intensive lives, as per the BBC report.&nbsp;

Dr Steve Smith, an expert in carbon removal from Oxford University, told the network that this idea could end up&nbsp;just a standard part of the way land is farmed.

UNDO, a company that does enhanced rock weathering, said the process has happened for millions of years but the company speeds it up. "For millions of years, carbon dioxide has combined with rainwater to form carbonic acid. When this dilute acid falls on mountains, forests and grassland, the CO₂ interacts with the rocks and soil, mineralises and is safely stored in carbonate form," the UNDO says on its website. The company points out that natural rock weathering takes hundreds of years and there is no time to wait. How does rock weathering work? The UNDO said that it enhances and accelerates enhanced rock weathering "by spreading crushed basalt rock on farmland, increasing the surface area of the rock and giving it immediate contact with the CO₂ produced by plant roots and soil microbes." Enhanced rock weathering uses tiny pieces to increase the amount of contact between the rain and rock and hence the amount of weathering and carbon removal, the BBC reported. As a cliff, or piled up in the quarry, basalt weathers very slowly. And to maximise the carbon removal it needs to be spread across a greater area. The UNDO said it focused on basalt rock as it is highly reactive, weathering quickly to speed up the sequestration of CO₂. The company points out that safe to use and offers significant co-benefits for crop and soil health. This year, the UNDO is planning to spread 185,000 tonnes of basalt and hopes by 2025 to have removed a million tonnes of CO2. What do experts say? Experts worry that carbon removal techniques like enhanced rock weathering might distract people from the priority of cutting emissions and even be used as justification to continue living our carbon-intensive lives, as per the BBC report. Dr Steve Smith, an expert in carbon removal from Oxford University, told the network that this idea could end up just a standard part of the way land is farmed. Can enhanced rock weathering help fight climate change? Report says this

Climate activists turn Rome's iconic Trevi fountain black

Rising temperatures, heat waves, droughts and forest fires have all become a reality. With climate change steadily affecting the Earth's temperatures, the need to stay cool has become more pressing.&nbsp;As per a recent report, to combat the heat, billions of people are now opting for cheap, pocket-friendly air conditioners that are further adding to the rising temperatures.

In tropical countries,&nbsp;the rising temperatures have increasingly begun pushing normal summer temperatures into dangerous territory, and in temperate countries, heat waves that were previously unimaginable are becoming more common.

<h2>How are people dealing with the heat?</h2>

According to a report by Sustainable Energy for All, to deal with the rising temperatures, approximately 2.4 billion rural and urban poor individuals are on the verge of purchasing the most affordable cooling appliance available to them, regardless of its efficiency.

The report states that while the mass adoption of inexpensive air conditioners may serve as a quick solution to combat the effects of a hotter climate, it also poses complications for the global energy transition.

<h2>How air conditioners are landing us in 'hot soup'</h2>

In a special report released in 2018, the International Energy Agency (IEA) had warned that cooling would be "one of the leading contributors to global electricity demand over the next three decades".&nbsp;The IEA estimates that approximately 10 new air conditioners will be sold every second between now and 2050.

The increased use of air conditioning puts additional strain on local power supplies and undermines efforts to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.

<h2>How much energy are air conditioners consuming?</h2>

Currently, space cooling—which includes fans, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners—consumes over 2,000 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity annually. To put this into perspective, that is two and a half times the total electricity used across Africa. As per the IEA, this&nbsp;accounts for around 10 per cent of global electricity consumption.&nbsp;

Bloomberg reports that based on existing policies and targets, this demand is projected to surge more than three times, to 6,200 TWh by 2050, with nearly 70 per cent of the increase attributed to residential air conditioning units.

In certain regions, such as parts of the US and the Middle East, space cooling already surpasses two-thirds of peak electricity demand on hot days. For instance, in Saudi Arabia, air conditioning alone accounts for 70 per cent of the country's total annual electricity demand.&nbsp;

<h2>What is&nbsp;the expected energy consumption of air conditioners in the future?</h2>

By 2050, space cooling is expected to overtake appliances as the largest consumer of electricity in buildings worldwide. To fulfil this demand, an additional capacity of 2,500 gigawatts would be required, which is equivalent to the current combined energy generation capacity of the United States, Europe, and India, according to the IEA.

The report predicts that countries with anticipated significant growth in cooling demand, particularly India, China, and Indonesia, would need to invest in substantial and expensive peak power capacity to meet the projected cooling needs.

<h2>But how are ACs contributing to rising temperatures?</h2>

It is all about the efficiency of cooling appliances.&nbsp;Often, consumers prioritise affordability over energy efficiency when purchasing new air conditioners.&nbsp;

As per the IEA,&nbsp;the average air conditioner sold in 2018 was only half as efficient as the typical appliance and only one-third as efficient as the best technology on the market.

<h2>What can countries do to promote energy-efficient air conditioners?</h2>

According to the IEA, countries could reward the purchase of energy-efficient cooling devices. As per the agency, implementing policies that mandate or incentivise the purchase of more efficient air conditioning units could reduce energy demand by 45 per cent and also lower investment and operational costs for the electricity network by $3 trillion.

<h2>Would that be enough?</h2>

Sadly, no. Even under an optimistic scenario that assumes the widespread adoption of more efficient cooling technology, the projected energy demand is likely to exceed the IEA's estimates for global warming by no more than 2 degrees Celsius.

Research conducted by the Centre for Sustainable Cooling at the University of Birmingham suggests that if everyone had access to the necessary cooling, including refrigerators for food and medicine, as well as air conditioners in cars and homes, the associated energy demand would be three times higher than the IEA's estimates by 2030.

However, according to a report by Sustainable Energy for All, an estimated 1.2 billion people living in rural and urban poor communities still lack&nbsp;access to cooling, including refrigeration and air conditioning.

<h2>How many ACs would the world require to cool the entire human population?&nbsp;</h2>

To meet the growing cooling needs, the Centre for Sustainable Cooling estimates that the world would require an additional 14 billion cooling devices by 2050. This is nearly four times the current number of 3.6 billion devices.

Furthermore, the volume of electricity required to power all these cooling devices, as estimated by the Centre, would amount to more than 80 per cent of the IEA's projected renewable capacity for 2050. In the worst-case scenario where new technologies for improving appliance efficiency are not adopted, this figure could surpass 100 per cent.

The report warns that even with improving AC efficiency, if renewable energy capacity does not continue to expand, the impact of millions more air conditioners would be far more significant. By 2030, it could result in over 2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per year, surpassing the entire emissions of the European Union in 2021.

Explained: Global warming pushing billions to buy air conditioners. Here’s how that’s adding to climate change

The United Kingdom is prepared for unprecedented heat wave conditions as meteorologists predict that the arrival of the African Plume would result in "record-breaking" temperatures. According to the weather graphs, this high-pressure system is swiftly approaching the country and will cause severe conditions within the UK by the end of May, with temperatures reaching as high as 35 degrees Celsius, according to a report&nbsp;in the Independent.

The African Plume is a meteorological phenomenon characterised by a mass of hot air moving from the Sahara desert to Europe. The plume causes a lengthy&nbsp;period of exceptionally high temperatures, typically exceeding 30 degrees Celsius in the UK. Extremely high temperatures may last for days or weeks. Furthermore, the intensity can vary each year, depending on the atmospheric conditions.

"During an African plume event, southerly or southeasterly winds carry the hot and dry air across the Mediterranean Sea towards the British Isles. As the air mass moves over the warm waters of the Mediterranean, it absorbs heat and moisture, further intensifying its warmth and humidity," the outlet said.

Despite the fact that various factors may influence weather patterns, researchers believe that the growing frequency of African plumes is compatible with climate change and a warming Earth. According to Met Office meteorologist Honour Criswick, there is "a greater than normal chance" of heatwaves this summer in the UK. This is "consistent with our warming climate." "As with any longer-term forecast, there is some uncertainty," she noted.

As per the report, Scotland and Northern Ireland could expect largely overcast sky with raindrops moving southeast on Saturday. "A brisk breeze may bring cooler temperatures to the far southeast." Most of the UK will enjoy fine and dry weather next week, with intervals of cloud and rain more probable in the northwest. "Unsettled&nbsp;weather remained a possibility in the far southeast," the outlet&nbsp;added.

UK braces for 'African Plume Heatwave': Country to witness record-breaking temperatures

Chalmers’ Division of Applied Acoustics researchers conducted a laboratory investigation in which test subjects were subjected to concentration tests while being exposed to background traffic noise. The individuals were asked to stare at a computer screen and respond to specific letters before rating their perceived workload. According to the study, the individuals performed much worse on the performance test and felt that the task was more difficult to complete with road noise in the background.

“What is unique about our study is that we were able to demonstrate a decline in performance at noise levels as low as 40 dB, which corresponds to the regular noise level in an office environment or a kitchen,” says Leon Muller, Doctoral student at the Division of Applied Acoustics in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering.

The background noise consisted of two audio sequences simulating trucks passing by at a distance of 10 and 50 metres. Both sequences were normalised to the same total indoor level of 40 dB.

“The audio sequence simulating the closer passages, where the sound changes significantly as the vehicle passes by, was usually the one that bothered the test subjects the most,” Muller says. “This could be because traffic that is further away is perceived as a more constant drone.”

Housing is built closer to roads now.

The new results emphasise an already problematic situation of negative impact on health and job performance due to traffic noise. In recent years, the distance between roads and newly built housing in Swedish cities has been allowed to shrink – a trend that can also be seen internationally.

Put somewhat simplistically, the Swedish regulations for where construction is permitted are based on the average outdoor noise level over a 24-hour period – meaning that they do not take individual pass-bys into account. In addition, current regulations do not cover the peaks of low-frequency noise indoors, which is difficult to avoid and is, according to research, more disruptive and therefore more impacting on human health.

In one study modelling low-frequency noise, Jens Forssen, Professor of applied acoustics at Chalmers, showed that such noise is primarily generated by heavy traffic at low speeds, and is difficult to shut out even with well-insulated windows and buildings that comply with all the construction norms and guidelines for sound insulation.

Reduced vehicle speed can increase the noise exposure indoors.

“The calculations for different types of facades show that it is difficult to achieve ideal indoor sound environments near heavily trafficked roads,” Forssen says. “Reducing speeds is not a solution, as our calculations show that the indoor noise exposure can even increase at lower speeds.”

Further, Forssen says that noise and the sound environment are a factor that is often considered too late in the planning process, and that there are advantages that could be achieved if adjustments were made in order to better utilise the space in terms of noise pollution.

The researchers also agree that the most effective solution would be to avoid urban densification in areas where traffic noise would have too great an impact on health and wellbeing.

Even mild traffic noise has an adverse effect on work performance: Study

New York City&nbsp;may soon sink under the sea predicts a new research. The city is sinking due to the weight of its towering skyscrapers. Coupled with the rising sea levels, this weight is pushing New York under at an average rate of 1-2 millimetres per year; some areas are sinking at twice this rate.&nbsp;Since 1950, the water surrounding New York City has risen by approximately 9 inches (22 centimetres).&nbsp;The rising water levels are a looming&nbsp;threat to&nbsp;the&nbsp;8.4 million people of the city.

Researchers behind the study published in the Earth’s Future journal warn that "a deeply concentrated population of 8.4 million people faces varying degrees of hazard from inundation in New York City."

<h2>Why is New York sinking?</h2>

New York's iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, or rather their weight, are causing the city&nbsp;to sink.

As per the research estimates, New York City's buildings, including iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, weigh a total of 1.68 trillion pounds — equivalent to the weight of 140 million elephants. This enormous weight pushes down on a mixture of different materials beneath the city, causing it to sink just a little bit every year.&nbsp;

It says that while the city's largest buildings are constructed on solid bedrock, such as schist, the ground beneath also contains a mixture of sand and clays. This mixture contributes to the natural sinking occurring along much of the US east coast as the land adjusts to the retreat of glaciers following the last ice age.

<h2>Were the iconic buildings a mistake?</h2>

Tom Parsons, a geophysicist at the US Geological Survey, and lead author of the research emphasised&nbsp;that constructing large buildings in New York was not a mistake, but it is essential to consider that each new construction further compresses the ground.

He said that the softer the soil, the more the buildings compress it.

Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/mumbai-is-sinking-in-the-sea-says-a-study-488110">Mumbai is sinking in the sea, says a study</a>

Parsons&nbsp;explains that while there is no immediate cause for panic, the ongoing sinking process increases the vulnerability to flooding.

"It’s not something to panic about immediately, but there’s this ongoing process that increases the risk of inundation from flooding."

<h2>Is it just New York that risks sinking?</h2>

No, the threat exists for all the coastal cities worldwide.

Researchers caution that it's not just New York that faces this danger. The risks, as per the authors, will be shared by many other coastal cities around the world as the climate crisis deepens.&nbsp;

They assert that the combination of tectonic and human-induced subsidence, along with other factors, all indicate a growing danger for coastal and riverfront regions.

"The combination of tectonic and anthropogenic subsidence, sea level rise, and increasing hurricane intensity imply an accelerating problem along coastal and riverfront areas."

<h2>Any previous research to support this?</h2>

A March 2022 study&nbsp;indicated that India's financial capital Mumbai,&nbsp;with a population of approximately 20 million, is experiencing a gradual sinking at an average rate of 2 mm per year.

The research, titled "Subsidence in Coastal Cities Throughout the World," highlighted that it is not just Mumbai.

As per the study,&nbsp;Tianjin, located in China, holds the distinction of being the fastest-sinking coastal city worldwide, with a subsidence rate of 5.2 cm per year.

Apart from Tianjin and Mumbai, the study examined land subsidence in 99 countries around the world. It identified additional coastal cities experiencing sinking, such as Jakarta in Indonesia (3.44 cm per year), Shanghai in China (2.94 cm per year), and Ho Chi Minh (2.81 mm per year) and Hanoi (2.44 cm per year) in Vietnam.

<h2>How is climate change causing these decades-old cities to sink?</h2>

The sinking, as per the study, is intensified by&nbsp;the impact of sea level rise, which is already occurring at approximately twice the global average due to the melting of glaciers and the expansion of seawater caused by global warming.&nbsp;

The research warns that by the end of the century, major flooding events from storms could occur up to four times more frequently due to the combined effects of sea level rise and climate change-fuelled hurricanes.

<h2>Are there any examples of how global warming is exacerbating the problem in New York?</h2>

In 2012 and then in 2021, New York City has already experienced the devastating impacts of flooding.

Hurricane Sandy in 2012 caused extensive damage and power outages, including flooding in the New York subway system. In 2021, Hurricane Ida led to further flooding and loss of life in the city.&nbsp;

Scientists have attributed the severity of both these disasters to the damning effects of global warming.

<h2>How can we protect iconic cities like New York and Mumbai?</h2>

As per Parsons, proactive&nbsp;planning is the way. He stressed that proactive planning is important for New York and other coastal cities. He said that vulnerable cities "have to get planning for this. If you get repeated exposure to seawater, you can corrode steel and destabilise buildings, which you clearly don’t want. Flooding also kills people, too, which is probably the greatest concern."

New York City may soon sink under the sea predicts a new research. The city is sinking due to the weight of its towering skyscrapers. Coupled with the rising sea levels, this weight is pushing New York under at an average rate of 1-2 millimetres per year; some areas are sinking at twice this rate. Since 1950, the water surrounding New York City has risen by approximately 9 inches (22 centimetres). The rising water levels are a looming threat to the 8.4 million people of the city. Researchers behind the study published in the Earth’s Future journal warn that "a deeply concentrated population of 8.4 million people faces varying degrees of hazard from inundation in New York City." Why is New York sinking? New York's iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, or rather their weight, are causing the city to sink. As per the research estimates, New York City's buildings, including iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, weigh a total of 1.68 trillion pounds — equivalent to the weight of 140 million elephants. This enormous weight pushes down on a mixture of different materials beneath the city, causing it to sink just a little bit every year. It says that while the city's largest buildings are constructed on solid bedrock, such as schist, the ground beneath also contains a mixture of sand and clays. This mixture contributes to the natural sinking occurring along much of the US east coast as the land adjusts to the retreat of glaciers following the last ice age. Were the iconic buildings a mistake? Tom Parsons, a geophysicist at the US Geological Survey, and lead author of the research emphasised that constructing large buildings in New York was not a mistake, but it is essential to consider that each new construction further compresses the ground. He said that the softer the soil, the more the buildings compress it. Also read | Mumbai is sinking in the sea, says a study Parsons explains that while there is no immediate cause for panic, the ongoing sinking process increases the vulnerability to flooding. "It’s not something to panic about immediately, but there’s this ongoing process that increases the risk of inundation from flooding." Is it just New York that risks sinking? No, the threat exists for all the coastal cities worldwide. Researchers caution that it's not just New York that faces this danger. The risks, as per the authors, will be shared by many other coastal cities around the world as the climate crisis deepens. They assert that the combination of tectonic and human-induced subsidence, along with other factors, all indicate a growing danger for coastal and riverfront regions. "The combination of tectonic and anthropogenic subsidence, sea level rise, and increasing hurricane intensity imply an accelerating problem along coastal and riverfront areas." Any previous research to support this? A March 2022 study indicated that India's financial capital Mumbai, with a population of approximately 20 million, is experiencing a gradual sinking at an average rate of 2 mm per year. The research, titled "Subsidence in Coastal Cities Throughout the World," highlighted that it is not just Mumbai. Also read | Explained: Global warming pushing billions to buy air conditioners. Here's how that's adding to climate change As per the study, Tianjin, located in China, holds the distinction of being the fastest-sinking coastal city worldwide, with a subsidence rate of 5.2 cm per year. How is climate change causing these decades-old cities to sink? The sinking, as per the study, is intensified by the impact of sea level rise, which is already occurring at approximately twice the global average due to the melting of glaciers and the expansion of seawater caused by global warming. The research warns that by the end of the century, major flooding events from storms could occur up to four times more frequently due to the combined effects of sea level rise and climate change-fuelled hurricanes. Are there any examples of how global warming is exacerbating the problem in New York? In 2012 and then in 2021, New York City has already experienced the devastating impacts of flooding. Hurricane Sandy in 2012 caused extensive damage and power outages, including flooding in the New York subway system. In 2021, Hurricane Ida led to further flooding and loss of life in the city. Scientists have attributed the severity of both these disasters to the damning effects of global warming. How can we protect iconic cities like New York and Mumbai? As per Parsons, proactive planning is the way. He stressed that proactive planning is important for New York and other coastal cities. He said that vulnerable cities "have to get planning for this. If you get repeated exposure to seawater, you can corrode steel and destabilise buildings, which you clearly don’t want. Flooding also kills people, too, which is probably the greatest concern." New York city is sinking the way India's Joshimath did: Here's how

At least 13&nbsp;people have died and thousands of others have been displaced after a devastating flood in Italy’s northern Emilia-Romagna region, local authorities said on Thursday (May 18). This comes after over 20 rivers have burst their banks and the amount of rain, which typically falls in six months, fell in a day and a half.&nbsp;

The death toll rose as rescue workers continued to search for anyone still trapped by floodwaters in the Italian region after downpours devastated homes and farms. The victims included two farmers in their 70s who might have been electrocuted while trying to move a fridge inside a flooded house, reported AFP, citing Italian media reports.&nbsp;

The damage caused

Media reports citing officials have said that some 300 landslides have taken place and over 10,000 have been displaced. As of early Thursday, some 400 roads were also damaged or destroyed while the floods have affected 42 municipalities.

Speaking to reporters, Emilia-Romagna President Stefano Bonaccini, said, “We are facing a new earthquake,” referring to the seismic events that struck the region in 2012, destroying thousands of homes, and how since then almost everything was rebuilt. He added that we have seen that it can be done and “we will rebuild everything again, I am sure of that.”

Locals were seen waddling through dirty waters while officials have managed to partly restore electricity even as 27,000 people remain in the dark. The Coldiretti agricultural association said that more than 5,000 farms drowned including the so-called “Fruit Valley” as well as corn and grain fields.&nbsp;

Evacuations and rescues

Authorities in Ravenna issued an immediate evacuation order early Thursday morning for three more villages threatened by floods.

The mayor of Ravenna, Michele De Pascale, announced on Thursday that residents of about a half dozen towns could return and warned them “to exercise the utmost caution,” adding that cracks in the river embankments still posed a risk to other areas.&nbsp;

Among those killed was a couple in Ronta di Cesena believed to have been hit by a wall of water as they went to check on their aromatic herb farm, reported AFP.&nbsp;

Furthermore, evacuations were ordered in towns to the west of Ravenna overnight while residents in Villanova were ordered to seek shelter on upper floors. The Italian coastguard also rescued two elderly people who took refuge on the roof of their flooded house in Faenza.&nbsp;

Italy floods: Death toll rises to at least 13, tens of thousands of people displaced

A new study reflects on the climate crisis and global warming as it reveals that more than half of the world's largest lakes and reservoirs are drying up.&nbsp;

The study which was published on Thursday in the journal Science highlighted that climate change and human activities are endangering lakes, which hold 87 per cent of the world's liquid surface fresh water. However, contemporary trends and sources of lake volume change are largely unknown around the world.&nbsp;

The study titled — Satellites reveal widespread decline in global lake water storage — examined the 1972 largest global lakes using three decades of satellite observations, climate data, and hydrologic models.&nbsp;

The study is aimed at finding statistically significant storage declines for 53 per cent of these water bodies over the period 1992–2020.&nbsp;

According to the study, the net volume loss in natural lakes is largely attributable to global warming, increasing evaporative demand, and human water consumption. Meanwhile, sedimentation is a dominant reason for storage losses in reservoirs.&nbsp;

<h2>'Lakes are in trouble'</h2>

The authors of the study noted that roughly one-quarter of the world's population resides in a basin of a drying lake, underscoring the necessity of incorporating climate change and sedimentation impacts into sustainable water resources management.

Balaji Rajagopalan, a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder and co-author of the paper, which appeared in Science, told news agency AFP: "Lakes are in trouble globally, and it has implications far and wide."&nbsp;

"It really caught our attention that 25 per cent of the world's population is living in a lake basin that is on a declining trend," he said, indicating that around two billion people are impacted by the findings. Rajagopalan also said that unlike rivers, lakes aren't well-monitored despite their critical importance for water security.

The findings suggest that 53 per cent of lakes and reservoirs saw a decline in water storage, at a rate of approximately 22 gigatonnes a year.&nbsp;

During the entire study period, 603 cubic kilometres of water were lost, which is 17 times the amount of water in Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States.&nbsp;

Rajagopalan said, "The climate signal pervades all factors."&nbsp;

Fangfang Yao, who is the lead author and a visiting fellow at CU Boulder, added in a statement: "Many of the human and climate change footprints on lake water losses were previously unknown, such as the desiccations of Lake Good-e-Zareh in Afghanistan and Lake Mar Chiquita in Argentina."

More than half of world's large lakes and reservoirs drying up: Study

Global temperatures will rise to record levels in the next five years and at least one of those years will be the warmest on record, said a report by the United Nation’s weather agency, on Wednesday (May 17).

It also noted that there is a 66 per cent chance that the annual average near-surface global temperature between the years 2023 and 2027, will be more than 1.5 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels for at least one year, crossing the key threshold.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the UN agency say?</h2>

The report has attributed this record rise in temperatures to a combination of heat-trapping greenhouse gases and naturally occurring El Niño weather pattern.&nbsp;

According to Petteri Taalas, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the weather pattern is expected to develop in the coming months and will combine with human-induced climate change effectively pushing global temperatures into an “uncharted territory”.&nbsp;

He added, “This will have far-reaching repercussions for health, food security, water management and the environment. We need to be prepared.” The report also noted that there is a 98 per cent chance that at least one in the next five years will beat the temperature record set in 2016. The rise in temperature noted seven years ago was also due to an exceptionally strong El Niño.

<h2>The 1.5 degree Celsius limit</h2>

The update issued by the WMO also said that there is a 66 per cent likelihood that the annual average near-surface global temperature between this year and 2027 will cross the 1.5-degree Celsius threshold, warmer than the mid-19th century.

However, the temperature might not stay over the key threshold which remains critical because of the 2015 Paris climate agreement which set the number to guide all nations to substantially reduce global greenhouse gas emissions while countries pledging to try to prevent that in the long run.&nbsp;

The lead author of the report, a climate scientist at the United Kingdom’s Met Office,&nbsp;Leon Hermanson, said, “It won’t be this year probably. Maybe it’ll be next year or the year after,” referring to the 1.5 degree Celsius average. Hermanson also said that “a single year doesn’t really mean anything.” Scientists usually use 30-year averages.

However, he warned that “Nobody is going to be untouched by these changes and it’s already leading to floods across the world, droughts and big movements of people.” Meanwhile, Taalas said that this report does not indicate that the temperature will “permanently exceed” the 1.5-degree Celsius level.

He added, “However, WMO is sounding the alarm that we will breach the 1.5 C level on a temporary basis with increasing frequency.” In a press conference, on Wednesday, the WMO chief also said, “We haven’t been able to limit the warming so far and we are still moving in the wrong, wrong direction.”&nbsp;

<h2>El Niño&nbsp;</h2>

According to the UN, the weather pattern, El Niño, typically increases global temperatures in the year after it develops. In this case, that means 2024, when we could witness large-scale warming of surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. As of now, the world was coming off a record-tying triple dip La Nina for three years straight which is the opposite of the El Niño weather pattern.&nbsp;
