USA’s biggest beef and poultry producer Tyson Foods is facing an economic crisis amid increasing production costs and declining demand in an inflation-battered market. The company posted a surprise second-quarter loss on Monday, which triggered a free fall in the company’s stock prices.

The shares tumbled a whopping 12 per cent, which effectively erased $300 million off the Tyson family’s fortune. The shares owned by the Tyson family are now worth $2.5 billion.

Tyson’s financial crisis

Tyson, the maker of popular meat products such as Aidells, Hillshire Farm and Jimmy Dean, has reported a sharp decline in beef sales and operating margins. Tyson's adjusted operating margin for beef has fallen from 12.7% last year to just 0.2% this year. The company's total beef margin for the fiscal year ending in September 2023 is expected to be between negative 1% and 1%, a significant drop from the original forecast of 2% to 4%. Sales of beef have also dropped by 3% to $4.6 billion.

Tyson's pork and chicken production are also experiencing challenges, with the company reporting a loss per share of 4 cents, instead of the expected profit of 80 cents per share. The company has also revised its sales forecast for 2023, which is now expected to reach $53 billion to $54 billion, compared to the previously anticipated $55 billion to $57 billion.

The company has also resorted to slashing its workforce to cut operational costs. Last month, Tyson Foods Chief Executive Donnie King announced the company will eliminate about 10% of corporate jobs and 15% of senior leadership roles.

Climate disaster behind Tyson’s misery

The extreme heatwaves sweeping across the US are responsible for the increase in livestock deaths, which is directly impacting the business operations of Tyson Foods. Kansas, one of the top three producers of beef in the country, reported thousands of cattle death last year.

This resulted in the shortage of livestock in the market that Tyson Foods needs to produce its output. As a result, it had to pay more for the animals that it slaughters. Heat waves and ensuing draughts also made livestock feed costlier, which further exacerbated the financial woes of Tyson Foods.

The National Weather Services (NWS) has warned of more extreme heatwaves in coming years, which will only pile misery on the beef business in the country.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), heat waves have become more frequent, longer, and more intense in the four decades since the 1960s. The annual number of heatwaves rose from two in the 1960s to six in the 2010s, and the heatwave season now accumulates more days than in past decades, reaching 70 days on average by the 2010s.

Climate researcher and professor Philip Thornton has warned that increasing heat will pose a significant challenge to livestock farmers. He notes that the livestock heat stress issue will become increasingly challenging for livestock farmers to deal with as the world warms.

A group of climate activists in Italy Saturday staged a protest against fossil fuel consumption by pouring vegetable-based charcoal-black liquid into Rome's famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi. The group, known as Ultima Generazione, is associated with the campaign "WE DON'T PAY FOR FOSSIL." It said in a statement, “Our future is as black as this water: without water there is no life.”

Significance of the Fiumi Fountain

The Fiumi Fountain, also known as the Fountain of Four Rivers, was built in 1651 by Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini in Rome's famous Piazza Navona plaza. The fountain features statues depicting the four main rivers of the Earth, one for each continent known at the time: the Danube, the Ganges, the Nile, and the Rio de la Plata. The activists chose this fountain to symbolize the importance of water for human life and how the current climate crisis threatens this equilibrium.

The Italian govt condemns the protest

The Italian government condemned the protest, and members of the group were arrested and are now facing accusations of defacing a public monument. Italy’s minister of culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, slammed the activists' protest, saying those guilty must "pay out of their own pockets."

He said, “As I have explained many times, these are acts against the environment which they claim to want to defend because the notion of landscape includes what beautiful things over centuries of history human genius has produced.”

“Experts talk about the anthropization of the environment. Now again, a lot of water will have to be used to clean up and costs incurred to restore the state of the monument – and (paying for it) will be Italian citizens,” the minister added.

Second fountain to be defaced in Italy

The same group had previously staged protests at other Italian historical sites, including the Barcaccia fountain in Rome's centre, which they also poured dark liquid into last month. The group said that it was done to highlight dangers to the water resources due to global warming. "Those in power are wreaking far worse havoc before our eyes. How can we accept that we continue to give money to those responsible for pollution and destructive weather?" the group said in a Tweet.

More than 13,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in western Canada, as of Friday (May 5), after a week of record-hot weather, exceeding seasonal averages by as much as 10 degrees Celsius, which have since triggered wildfires. On the other hand, rapid snow melt has trigged flooding across interior British Columbia.

Wildfires in Alberta

The officials have said that around 13,000 residents were under evacuation orders, in the Canadian province of Alberta, the region worst affected by forest fires. On Friday, as per reports, the province witnessed nearly 80 active fires out of which many were out of control.

This comes as a western and central part of the country which is home to a large part of Canada’s agricultural land is witnessing “abnormally dry” and even “severe drought” in places, reported AFP citing data from the government.

In this context, among the worst-hit areas was the territory of the Little Red River Cree Nation, which comprises three communities in the north of the province, including Fox Lake, where fire has engulfed as many as 20 houses.

According to Christie Tucker, an information unit manager for Alberta Wildfire, there have been nearly 350 wildfires in Alberta this year, which have burned more than 25,000 hectares. “This is significantly more wildfire activity for this time of year than we have seen any time in the recent past,” said Tucker, at a press conference, as quoted by Reuters.

She added, “It's going to get hotter, it's going to get windier and we are expecting some extreme wildfire behaviour. Firefighters are at the ready today for what could be an extremely challenging day.” The official warned that fires were expected to intensify.

Floods and fire in British Columbia

While one part of Canada is dealing with dry conditions and wildfires, British Columbia, on the Pacific coast, is witnessing a terrible combination of both, several wildfires inland and rapid snowmelt that has raised the level of rivers in the southern part of the province. Media reports citing officials have said that some rivers have burst their banks.

“Multiple days of unusually warm temperatures have generated rapid snowmelt and high streamflows across much of the BC Interior, with severe flooding underway in some areas,” said the provincial authorities, in a statement, as quoted by the news agency AFP. It added, “Severe flooding is possible, and extreme flooding...is plausible, in areas that receive high rainfall.”

The authorities are also concerned about the heavy rains expected at the weekend which could worsen the situation. “The situation is expected to worsen as rainfall and thundershowers are forecast for Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6, which increases the likelihood of flooding,” said the Ministry of Emergency Management said in a statement, as per Reuters.

Starting Monday (May 1st) people in Germany can now use the nation's public transport system — buses, metro system, as well as local and regional trains — at the flat rate of 49 euros (54 dollars). As per France 24, the German government has launched this new initiative to encourage people to use public transport instead of cars as a way to reduce carbon emissions.

The "Deutschlandticket" or the "Germany ticket" initiative offers travellers a flat-rate travel card that costs €49 ($54) per month — €588 ($645) per year and allows unlimited travel on public transport across the country, including buses, trams, and trains. However, it does not cover long-distance travel on buses or high-speed trains, such as the Intercity Express (ICE).

The German government has expressed a hope that this initiative will help to reduce the number of people using cars and, as a result, cut down the country's carbon footprint.

Transport Minister Volker Wissing labelled the initiative "the biggest public transport reform in German history."

However, the initiative's success is far from assured. According to the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), it is expected that only about 16 million people out of Germany's total population of 84 million will take advantage of the new flat-rate travel card.

Around 750,000 tickets have already been sold, but this number does not include those who plan to switch from their current transport subscriptions to the new initiative.

The travel card has been welcomed by environmental groups as an important step towards fighting climate change.

However, critics have argued that the card is too expensive and that it will not be accessible to everyone — for the poorest people in society — they also point to the fact that there are no concessions for students or people on low incomes.

Talking to AFP, transport expert Oliver Wittig said that the 49-euro ticket will particularly benefit "urban residents who already have a more expensive subscription."

The financing of Germany's new flat-rate travel card was the subject of lengthy debate, which contributed to the delay in its rollout.

Eventually, an agreement was reached between the federal government and the country's states to each contribute 1.5 billion euros towards the financing of the initiative. This was done to avoid adding to the national rail operator's existing debt pile.

Despite this, the expenditure has faced criticism from the opposition, who argue that the money could have been better spent to " improve and renovate rail infrastructure."

The criticism of the expenditure on the flat-rate travel card has highlighted the significant investment needed to fix Germany's rail network. Official estimates suggest that around 8.6 billion euros a year will be required over the next decade to maintain and improve the network.

Despite its pledge to reduce emissions from fossil fuels, China as per Greenland has this year approved a major surge in coal power. The jump in approval of coal-powered power plants has sparked concerns that China, which happens to be the world's second-largest economy and also globally the biggest emitter of the greenhouse gases driving climate change, will backtrack on its climate goals.

China has pledged that it will reach peak emissions between 2026 and 2030 and that by 2060 it will become carbon-neutral.

However, as per Greenpeace, in the first three months of 2023, local governments in "energy-hungry" Chinese provinces have approved at least 20.45 gigawatts (GW) of coal-fired power.

This, according to AFP, is more than double the 8.63 GW which Greenpeace reported for the same time period last year and surpasses the 18.55 GW approved for the entirety of 2021.

Most of the newly approved coal projects, as per AFP, are in provinces that, during the last two years, have suffered "punishing power shortages" due to record heatwaves. Others are in the southwest part of the country where last year, a record drought significantly cut down the hydropower output.

In February, the Global Energy Monitor (GEM) released a study according to which last year China approved the largest expansion of coal-fired power plants since 2015.

As per Greenpeace campaigner Xie Wenwen, China's push for more coal plants "risks climate disasters... and locking us into a high-carbon pathway."

"The 2022 coal boom has clearly continued into this year."

Last year, China reportedly relied on coal for nearly 60 per cent of its electricity needs.

Greenpeace experts cautioned that investing in additional fossil-fuel plants to cope with the surge in air conditioning would generate a vicious cycle: higher greenhouse gas emissions from the coal plants would accelerate global warming, leading to more frequent extreme weather events like the heat waves China experienced in the past couple of years.

Others are in the southwest part of the country where last year, a record drought significantly cut down the hydropower output. In February, the Global Energy Monitor (GEM) released a study according to which last year China approved the largest expansion of coal-fired power plants since 2015. Three months into 2023, China approves record coal burning plants despite pledge to reduce emissions

From mountain peaks to ocean depths, climate change continued its advance in 2022. The relentless advance of climate change brought more droughts, flooding, and heat waves to communities around the world. This is according to the annual report from the world meteorological organization.

Climate change is continuing its advance, says UN report

Climate activists worldwide held demonstrations to mark the 54th Earth Day celebrations. They demanded action over climate change and environmental issues. They urged action to check global warming and cut plastics use. Volunteers also planted trees and cleared trash.

A study has revealed that the media's coverage of climate research is, to a large extent, carried out in a way that doesn't provoke action. It claims that the media coverage doesn't inspire the pro-environmental behaviours needed to address the problem. The study has been published in the Global Environmental Change scientific journal. For it, researchers analysed around 50,000 scientific publications on climate change for the year 2020 and examined which ones made it into the mainstream media.

They found that the media tends to pick research within the natural science field. There was also an evident focus on large-scale climate-based projections that won't happen for many years, reports AFP.

Researchers warned that this approach could cause a "possible distancing reaction on the part of the public."

Study finds that media's climate crisis coverage sparks fear and favours avoidance

Here's a report which affects you and me and everyone we know and anybody who's on Earth. From mountain peaks to ocean depths, climate change continued its advance in 2022. The relentless advance of climate change brought more droughts, flooding and heat waves to communities.

Climate crisis: Too late already? | Alarming UN report on climate change

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), in its report, said that temperatures have increased across Europe in the last few years and the heatwaves have resulted in 15,700 deaths across the continent in 2022.

The report emphasised that Europe was affected by record-breaking heat waves in the summer and extreme heat was accompanied by dry conditions in some areas. The death toll due to heatwave exceeded 15,000 across the UK, Portugal, France, Spain and Germany.

The WMO report titled “State of the Global Climate in 2022” was released on World Earth Day which is marked on April 22 every year. WMO is the United Nations (UN) agency for climate, water and weather.

Past eight years hottest in history: report

In the report, the UN noted that the past eight years were the hottest in record history. It added that one million species are currently facing the risk of extinction as the world's biodiversity is threatened by climate change.

The WMO report further emphasised that increasing greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are causing damaging environmental changes.

"WMO latest State of the Global Climate report shows that the last eight years were the eight warmest on record, and that sea level rise and ocean warming hit new highs. Record levels of greenhouse gases caused 'planetary scale changes on land, in the ocean and in the atmosphere'," stated the UN in a release.

Glaciers melting at dramatic speed

Emphasising the melting glaciers, the WMO stated, “Antarctic sea ice fell to its lowest extent on record and the melting of some European glaciers was, literally, off the charts.”

The glaciers of the world lost their thickness by more than 1.3 metres between October 2021 and October 2022, which is much larger compared to the average decrease over the last decade. Since 1970, the cumulative thickness of glaciers lost is around 30 metres.

The report stated that there has been a record increase in sea levels by an average of 4.62 millimetres every year between 2013 and 2022, which is double the speed at which it was increasing between 1993 and 2002.

The UN said that record high temperatures were also recorded in the oceans where almost 90 per cent of the heat, which remains trapped on Earth due to the greenhouse gases, finally ends up.

Climate change impacting people's health

Due to climate change, the report stated that the health of European people has been impacted in several ways, including illness and death due to the increased frequency of extreme weather conditions.

The report has suggested that there can be an increase in zoonoses, where the transmission of disease takes place from animals to humans, along with water, food and vector-borne diseases, as well a rise in cases of mental health disorders.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, while speaking on World Earth Day, said, "In his message on Earth Day, UN chief Guterres warned that 'biodiversity is collapsing as one million species teeter on the brink of extinction', and called on the world to end its 'relentless and senseless wars on nature', insisting that 'we have the tools, the knowledge, and the solutions' to address climate change.”

Earth Day: 10 movies that will inspire you to take action on climate change

Extinction Rebellion, an environmental advocacy organisation, started four days of protests in London on Friday, promising less commotion and greater participation than the massive blockades that have been its signature. This weekend, the group anticipates a gathering of 100,000 people outside the parliament, and so far, it claims that 30,000 individuals have expressed interest. It expects 40,000 to 50,000 people to show out to "The Big One" event, which will take place on Sunday in conjunction with the London Marathon.

As temperatures are rising across India, causing heat exhaustion and heat strokes, the Indian Meteorological Department issued alerts in states including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sikkim and Odisha. During its 8 am daily weather bulletin, the weather department said that some areas of Uttar Pradesh and Gangetic of West Bengal will continue to face heat wave conditions. The hot weather has been prevailing in most parts of the country for a few days now, with the mercury reaching 45 degrees Celsius in states like Haryana. Similarly, Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur and Prayagraj registered 44.2 degrees Celsius.

However, the IMD in its latest tweet predicted a relief in the plains of northwest India including Punjab, J&K and Himachal Pradesh. The Twitter post read, "Latest Satellite and radar observations show the movement of an intense convective cloud mass across Punjab, Haryana, J&K, Himachal Pradesh leading to favourable conditions for light to moderate rainfall with occasional intense spells along with isolated Thunderstorms, lightning."

Weather conditions in parts of India:

The weather department on April 18, issued an orange alert in Bihar, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh after recording temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.

Punjab and Haryana:

Punjab's Bhatinda recorded a maximum temperature of 41 degrees Celsius, while Amritsar and Patiala recorded 36.6 and 41.2 degrees Celsius respectively.

Haryana's Hisar in this sizzling heat reached a maximum temperature of 41.4 degrees.

Delhi:

Hot weather has been persisting over the national capital, with some weather stations recording the maximum temperature at least five degrees Celsius above normal.

However, IMD on Wednesday said that Delhi might see some relief as cloudy weather prevails.
