<p>Levandowski started his church “Way of the Future” (WOTF) in 2015 while working on Google’s self-driving project Waymo but it was shut down just a couple of years later.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He also told Bloomberg that the church already has a congregation consisting of “a couple thousand people,” who are trying to build a “spiritual connection” with AI.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking about WOTF, the former Google engineer said, “Here we’re actually creating things that can see everything, be everywhere, know everything, and maybe help us and guide us in a way that normally you would call God.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“For the last 4 billion years we’ve had organic lifeforms, now, for the first time things are changing and we’re going to have inorganic life forms,” Levandowski told Bloomberg.</p>

<p>During the interview, the former Google engineer spoke about his aim to help gain a better and deeper understanding of AI to allow more people to have a say in how the technology is used.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He went on to describe WOTF as a tool for rural America to help them “understand and participate and shape the public discourse as to how we think technology should be built to improve you.”</p>

<p>The so-called church sought to champion an ethical evolution of AI but since its conception has sparked interest and controversy – like Levandowski himself.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2020, he pleaded guilty to stealing trade secrets from Google which resulted in an 18-month prison sentence. However, less than six months later, he was pardoned by former United States President Donald Trump on the last day of his presidency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last month, Spain's first independent probe into the issue estimated that over 200,000 minors had been sexually abused in the country of around 39 million people by Roman Catholic clergy since 1940. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The report did not give a specific figure, but said a poll of over 8,000 people found some 0.6 percent of Spain's adult population said they had suffered sexual abuse by members of the clergy when they were still children. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The percentage rises to 1.13 per cent -- or over 400,000 people -- when including abuse by lay members, according to the results of the probe which was led by Spain's national ombudsman. &nbsp;</p>

<p>In a message posted to social media after the report's publication, Cardinal Juan Jose Omella, president of the Episcopal Conference, said the Church was aware of 1,125 cases of sexual abuse.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The independent commission recommended the creation of a state compensation fund for victims, an idea supported by Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But Spain's Catholic Church has ruled out taking part in such a fund if it is set up exclusively to compensate victims clerical abuse, and not all minors who are victims of sexual abuse in any setting. &nbsp;</p>

<p>To do so would be "discrimination", said Omella.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Spanish Bishops Conference said Friday it would draw up a "comprehensive reparation plan for the victims" that will apply even if the statute of limitations for the abuse has expired or the perpetrator has died. It gave no further details.&nbsp;</p>

In the city of Izhevsk, a school planned a Pumpkin Feast in which students were free to dress up in red, black or orange costumes, “indulge their fantasies”, and use pumpkins to make food. However, the school faced criticism for the event and was forced to renege on its plans.</p>

<p>Previously, five conservative cardinals, in a letter, had formally questioned the Pope on a number of topics, including the October meeting of bishops and the impact it may have on the Church's teachings.</p>

<p>Cardinals Walter Brandmuller, Raymond Leo Burke, Juan Sandoval Iniguez, Robert Sarah and Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, had also asked in their 'dubia,' Pope Francis about his intentions to bless same-sex unions and his aspirations regarding the potential ordination of women priests. They initially sent the letter on July 10.</p>

<p>However, unsatisfied with the Pope's initial response, the five cardinals reworded their dubia and, citing "the gravity of the matter" sent it again on August 21.</p>

<p>Dubia is Latin for doubt and is an official request to a sitting pontiff. It seeks a simple "yes" or "no" response on disputed matters of Catholic teaching, practice and the running of the Church. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>'Help from God'</strong></p>

<p>"When you ask for a blessing, you are expressing a request for help from God, a prayer to be able to live better, a trust in a father who can help us live better," said the Pope in a letter released by the Vatican.</p>

<p>In the letter dated September 25, he also said that clergy must show "pastoral prudence, must adequately discern if there are forms of blessing requested by one or various people, which do not convey a wrong concept of marriage."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We cannot be judges who only deny, reject, and exclude," he said.</p>

<p>However, he maintained that the&nbsp;Church still considered same-sex relationships "objectively sinful" and that same-sex marriages wouldn't be recognised.</p>

Pope Francis says Catholic Church can bless same-sex unions on 'case-by-case basis', amid tussle

<p>At least 10 people, including three children, lost their lives and nearly 60 were wounded after the roof of a church collapsed during Sunday mass in a northern Mexican city, said the authorities.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Unfortunately, ten people are confirmed dead. Of these, five are women, two men and three children," Americo Villarreal, governor of Tamaulipas, told reporters at the scene of the disaster.</p>

<p>The governor released a statement saying that at least 60 people were being treated for injuries with 23 still hospitalised.</p>

<p>"Two have serious injuries, their lives may be in danger," he said.</p>

<p>The incident took place in the northeastern coastal town of Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas state. As per local media reports, a Red Cross rescuer said that at least 80 people were in attendance at the Santa Cruz parish when the roof came crashing down.</p>

<p>According to local media reports, at least 30 people are believed to be trapped under the rubble. Reportedly, a baptism was being celebrated when the ceiling caved in.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We are experiencing a very difficult moment... the roof of a church has collapsed during the celebration of the Eucharist," the bishop of the local diocese Jose Armando Alvarez said in a video posted to social media.</p>

<p>"At this moment they are doing the necessary work to save the people who are still under the rubble," he added, without providing more details.</p>

<p>At least 15 people died after militia attacked the worshippers praying in a Church in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, confirmed military and local sources on Tuesday (August 29). The civilians living in this area have been victims of increasing violence.</p>

<p>Militiamen, who belonged to the Co-operative for the Development of the Congo (CODECO), which is a militia group involved in various brutal ethnic killings, on Sunday attacked a fishing camp in Gobu, stated Charite Banza, president of civil society in Ituri province.</p>

<p>The attack that took place on Sunday lasted for more than two hours, and ended with the killing of 15 people, said Banza while speaking to the AFP, further stating that seven other people died in the same area a week earlier.</p>

<p>Ituri province has emerged as one of the most violent hotspots of DR Congo where dozens of lives are being claimed in the attacks.</p>

<h2><strong>Officials prosecute perpetrators of attack</strong></h2>

<p>Head of the same chiefdom of Bahema Nord Pilo Mulindo said that as per a provisional toll, nine civilians, four CODECO militiamen and one soldier were killed in the attack that took place on Tuesday.</p>

<p>Speaking to AFP, army spokesperson Lieutenant Jules Ngongo said that the CODECO militia had "attacked civilians in the middle of prayer on Sunday in their church in Gobu, on the shores of Lake Albert".</p>

<p>Ngongo stated that the military had responded to the church attack and the officials were prosecuting the perpetrators.</p>

<p>Djugu territory administrator Ruphin Mapela and civil society leader Dieudonne Lossa confirmed that the CODECO was behind the attack.</p>

<p>"We call on the population to remain calm as the armed forces pursue these criminals to put them out of action," said Ituri army spokesman Jules Ngongo Tshikudi.</p>

<p>The CODECO militia, which comprises thousands of fighters, says that they are protecting the Lendu community from its rival ethnic group the Hema. The conflict between Lendu and Hema communities rekindled in 2017, after a decade of calm.</p>

<p>Videos and messages from locals suggested that&nbsp;loudspeakers of mosques were used to convey alleged desecration of religious scriptures by two local Christian residents, Rocky and Raja.</p>

<p>Though&nbsp;a heavy contingent of police reached the area and assured the swelling mob that the suspects would be apprehended and would face action as per the law, the&nbsp;crowds proceeded to attack the colony.</p>

<p>The government of Pakistan's&nbsp;Punjab province called in Pakistani Rangers to control the violent situation. There are reports that churches and members of the minority Christian community are being attacked at different locations across the city.</p>

A Christian leader, Akmal Bhatti, said the crowd had torched at least five churches and looted valuables from houses that had been abandoned by their owners after clerics made announcements in mosques inciting the mob, said a Dawn report.</p>

<p>Images on social media showed smoke rising from church buildings and people dragging out furniture from them and setting it fire on. A Christian cemetery was also vandalised, the report added.<br />

Police registered an first information report against the blasphemy accused under sections 295B (defiling, etc., of the Holy Quran) and 295C (use of derogatory remarks, etc., in respect of the Holy Prophet) of the Pakistan Penal Code.</p>

<p>Pakistan's caretaker PM Anwaar ul Haq Kakar has taken note on the incident and posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that those guilty would be punished.</p>

<p>"I am gutted by the visuals coming out of Jaranwala,#Faisalabad. Stern action would be taken against those who violate law and target minorities. All law enforcement has been asked to apprehend culprits &amp; bring them to justice. Rest assured that the government of Pakistan stands with our citizenry on equal basis," Kakar posted.</p>

Churches attacked in Pakistan's Faisalabad over blasphemy allegations

The tree was a symbol of the culture of the island and the buildings emphasised the importance of Hawaiian history. The whole town recently celebrated the 150th birthday of the banyan tree with cake. The tree continues to stand but is charred by the fire which burned the whole area.<br />

“It certainly doesn’t look like that tree is going to recover,” said James B Friday, an extension forester with the University of Hawaii, while speaking to the New York Times after reviewing videos and photos of the damage. The thin bark of the tree would have failed to provide adequate protection from the flames, he stated.</p>

<p>For 150 years, community events, including art fairs, have been shaded by the colossal tree. “It’s kind of the centre of town,” said Amy Fuqua, a Maui resident, while speaking to the Associated Press in a 2016 interview.</p>

<p>“Everyone knows where it’s at. It has an important significance to the town and it feels good under there,” she had added.</p>

<h2><strong>Town, history, and heritage engulfed in fire</strong></h2>

<p>Apart from the banyan tree, an 1830s-era Baldwin Home Museum was reduced to ash, confirmed Lahaina Restoration Foundation Executive Director Theo Morrison to CNN. The Waiola Church, where English and Hawaiian prayers echoed for decades, was also engulfed by wildfire flames.<br />
<br />
The area also houses the Wo Hing Temple Museum, a social and religious meeting place for the Chinese immigrant community of the island. That has also suffered destruction, as seen by satellite imagery.<br />
<br />
In 1909, Chinese immigrants who had come to Maui as contract sugar plantation labourers and settled there permanently created the Wo Hing Society, as per the National Park Service. The Lahaina Heritage Museum, which is located on the west of the banyan tree, is also situated amid a field of fire debris which has been captured by satellite images.</p>

<p>The discovery was made possible by a joint venture between the Mexican National Institute of History and Anthropology (INAH), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Association for Archaeological Research and Exploration and the ARX&nbsp;Project.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After obtaining the data and combing it, the team managed to produce a comprehensive map of what lay 5-8 metres (16-26 feet) below the church's surface. The Catholic building was built after missionaries arrived in the area and conceals the entrance to the now-mapped forbidden underground network.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, the Zapotecs were firm believers in the underworld. They were polytheistic and believed in ritual, including when someone died.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Evidence of the hidden temple</strong></h2>

<p>According to experts, when the Zapotecs placed the buildings underneath, they would have been used as a religious temple, known as the Lyobaa - the 'place of rest'. The ruin was believed to be a portal to the realm of the deceased. It is&nbsp;suspected that the entrance to the underground passages may be located beneath the church’s main altar, which forced the church representatives to close it, in order to keep the 'satan' away.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The missionaries who built the church over it documented that they had indeed sealed the entrance to the&nbsp;Lyobaa.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“In 1674, Dominican father Francisco de Burgoa described the exploration of the Mitla ruins and their subterranean chambers by a group of Spanish missionaries. Burgoa’s account describes an expansive subterranean temple consisting of interconnected chambers, housing the tombs of high priests and kings of Teozapotlán,"&nbsp;the ARX&nbsp;Project noted in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of the employees revealed the shoddy practices used by Garibaldi to the Department of&nbsp;Labor. The employee added that the company&nbsp;paid managers from the employee tip pool illegally, threatened employees with retaliation and adverse immigration consequences for cooperating with the department, and fired one worker who they believed had complained to the department.</p>

<p>“Under oath, an employee of Taqueria Garibaldi explained how the restaurant offered a supposed priest to hear their workplace ‘sins’ while other employees reported that a manager falsely claimed that immigration issues would be raised by the department’s investigation,"&nbsp;&nbsp;said the Regional Solicitor of Labor Marc Pilotin in a release.&nbsp;</p>

The livelihoods of fishermen are at stake, with reduced water levels impacting their ability to sustain themselves and their families.</p>

<p>Local tilapia farmer Darinel Gutiérrez told AFP that the water began to drop too much about five months ago and has already gone beyond ordinary.</p>

US: Southern Baptists expel two churches led by female pastors despite fervent appeals

<p>Artificial Intelligence is breaking new barriers by the day. Hundreds of worshippers at St. Paul's Church in Fürth, Bavaria, Germany recently attended a service, entirely conducted by AI with the sermon being presented by the AI chatbot ChatGPT.&nbsp;</p>

<p>An hour before the service even began, people formed a long queue outside the 19th-century, neo-Gothic building to witness what the AI could deliver.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The chatbot's sermon majorly focused on themes surrounding leaving one's past behind, living in the present, not being afraid of death and maintaining faith in Jesus Christ. Notably, four different AI avatars took turns to impart the sermons and lead the service.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Dear friends, it is an honor for me to stand here and preach to you as the first artificial intelligence at this year's convention of Protestants in Germany," one of the AI avatars&nbsp;said.</p>

<p>The entire service, attended by over 300 people and lasting 40 minutes was conceptualised by 29-year-old&nbsp;Jonas Simmerlein, a University of Vienna theologian and philosopher. It was part of&nbsp;&nbsp;Deutscher Evangelischer Kirchentag - a biennial event, much popular in this part of the world that attracts tens of thousands of devout Christians. This year's issues include climate change the war in Ukraine and AI.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I conceived this service but actually I rather accompanied it, because I would say about 98% comes from the machine,” Simmerlein was quoted as saying by The Associated Press.</p>

<p>The scholar fed "Now is the time" - one of the slogans for this year's gathering to the chatbot and asked it to develop the sermon along these lines.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I told the artificial intelligence ‘We are at the church congress, you are a preacher… what would a church service look like?’” said&nbsp;Simmerlein who also&nbsp;asked for psalms to be included, as well as prayers and a blessing at the end.</p>

<p>“You end up with a pretty solid church service,” he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“There was no heart and no soul,” said, 54-year-old Heiderose Schmidt who works in IT. “The avatars showed no emotions at all, had no body language and were talking so fast and monotonously that it was very hard for me to concentrate on what they said.”</p>

<p>Even&nbsp;Simmerlein conceded that technology lacked the personal touch which differentiates it from humans.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The pastor is in the congregation, she lives with them, she buries the people, she knows them from the beginning. Artificial intelligence cannot do that. It does not know the congregation."</p>

<p>Since ChatGPT made news headlines last year, there is a consensus among clergy that technology can write a passable competent sermon but it can't replicate the passion of actual preaching.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The primary purpose to set up the report was to make suggestions on how the church can cooperate with families and households while referencing Christian tradition.</p>

<p>In the study, one of the main themes is to "honour singleness and single person households" as they are appropriate for a diversified society.</p>

<p>According to Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki, Odero's arrest is connected to allegations of deaths that have occurred at his premises and reported at various morgues across the town. He is currently being processed and is expected to face criminal charges.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The team was unable to identify the mass grave by virtue of vast land (area) and hostile residents in the forest. It is further suspected that there are many victims in the forest land believed to belong to the suspect," the report added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Local reports stated that&nbsp;Nthenge was arrested last month after two children were starved to death by the parents, based on his advice.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kenya is a highly religious country and this is not the first instance when a cult leader has seemingly led&nbsp;their&nbsp;followers down an astray path. One of the most infamous cases remains the death of British woman Lutfunisa Kwandwalla who died in 2020 at the house of a spiritual leader in Mombasa.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kwandwalla resided in the city of Leicester but went to Kenya in August 2019 to visit members of her husband's family. However, she joined a controversial cult upon reaching there.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kwandwalla was to return to England after a few months but a coronavirus lockdown and travel restrictions meant that her stay was prolonged and she was pushed deeper into the cult.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Her family alleged that the cult members killed her and buried the body quickly to hide evidence. Meanwhile, local officials blamed "natural causes" and no arrests were made.</p>

<p>An investigation by an independent commission recently has unearthed the dirty face of child abuse at the hands of Catholic clergy in Portugal. The horrifying testimonies of the survivors become the ground of the commission's inquiry. The commission with the help of a large network of victims was able to make a deeper cut into finding out the ongoing paedophilia in the staunchly Catholic country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Portuguese inquiry which was commissioned by the church revealed that there are about 5,000 children who have become victims of child abuse since 1950. The report comes after the testimony of over 500 survivors last year.&nbsp;Commission head, Pedro Strecht, responded to the inquiry findings saying “This testimony allows us to establish a much larger network of victims, at least 4,815."&nbsp;</p>

<p>To do away with this gruesome malice, the country's bishop will reportedly convene in March. As per reports, the time for the majority of the offenders has passed its limit for bringing about the charges but 25 of these cases have been transferred to the prosecution service.</p>

<h2><strong>Victims' voices&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Many victims have come forward to unlock their pain in front of the commission and recount the horror they have lived. A 43-year-old woman, who spoke on the condition of anonymity has alleged that a priest raped her during confession when she was just a 17-year-old novice nun.</p>

<p>The woman revealed that she kept it a secret for a long time because of her deep-seated fear of speaking out against the clergies in a largely Catholic country. At one point, she said she mustered up the courage to bring culprits to justice but no one did anything to help her.</p>

<p>She expressed her anger saying that a bishop asking for forgiveness for his sins does not hold any meaning for her. “We don’t know if they mean it," she said adding, “The church needs to cleanse itself."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The child abuse cases which has now come to light in Portugal are nothing new as these accusations have been emerging every now and then from all across the world. Data exposes the magnanimity of the situation which can make anyone sit up and notice. The United States, too, have its own share of the burden when it comes to tackling these child abuse scandals carried out by the priests and the Catholic churches.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For instance, the legal bearing of the lawsuits got pretty real for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego. As per reports, now the diocese may soon become bankrupt as it stares down “staggering" legal costs thanks to about 400 lawsuits against its priests for allegedly sexually abusing children.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Diocese in a statement said that a whopping $550 million in legal charges are against priests who are not presently serving.</p>

<p>All these cases, as per Diocese, were filed after a 2019 bill which make it possible for child sexual abuse victims in California to no longer face deadlines to file civil claims. At the time, California State Representative Dawn Addis in her remarks said that it's "time to end this arbitrary and cruel time limit on justice."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What is the new law?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Under the previous law, minor sexual assault survivors only had until their 40th birthday to seek justice in civil court however with the new bill the time limit is now dropped. It has opened floodgates as most of the alleged abuses were reportedly cited in the suits that took place 50 to 75 years ago. These child abuse victims just do not come forward by that age sometimes. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The data suggests that in New York, nearly 11,000 cases were filed in state courts seeking to hold Catholic dioceses responsible for sexual abuse by clergy.&nbsp;And it is interesting to note that like in California mass sexual abuse litigations are being filed all across US.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A total of 23 states, along with two territories and Washington, D.C., have passed laws that suspend statutes of limitations for sexual-abuse victims. However, there is one more loophole, the way the bankruptcy claims-filing procedures are.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Judges who look at these filings in the Bankruptcy courts sometimes set up their own deadlines. This becomes an issue because when the victim misses the deadline they get nothing or they get only some of the claim from the accumulated amounts for unknown claimants.&nbsp;</p>

Voices from the Anglican churches, prominently from developing countries, have expressed displeasure at the decision which is being hailed by many to be a positive step.</p>

<p>The Global South Fellowship of Anglican Churches (GSFA) has now said that Church of England's new stance “goes against the overwhelming mind of the Anglican Communion”. The GSFA represents Anglican churches in 24 countries and provinces that include Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.</p>

<p>Leaders from Anglican churches in the global south are planning to meet on Monday to deliberate on the issue and take a dominant position within the church. News reports suggest that there are plans to relegate Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, to a marginal position.</p>

<p>As quoted by The Guardian, archbishop of Alexandria Samy Fawzy Shehata told the synod that “crossing this line of blessing same-sex unions will alienate 75% of the Anglican Communion” and “lead eventually to impaired and broken communion”. Synod is the governing body of the Church of England.</p>

<p>“God cannot bless what he calls sin. The C of E has departed from the Anglican faith and are now false teachers,” said Stephen Kaziimba, the archbishop of Uganda, as quoted by The Guardian.</p>

<p>Father Jeremy Trood, the priest who conducted the service, told PA news agency that it had been a requiem mass for Sara Sanchez, 20, and her mother, who both died within a month of each other in November.</p>

<p>Sara succumbed to Leukemia while her mother died due to a blood clot on arrival from Heathrow from Colombia, the MyLondon news website reported.</p>

<p>"I heard this almighty bang and I thought this was not normal, and the next minute everyone was screaming and shouting," a neighbour told PA.</p>

<p>In addition to the seven-year-old girl, four women and another girl, 12, were wounded in the incident near the busy Euston train station.</p>

<p>The other girl was discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for minor leg injuries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Police said that a 21-year-old woman was also in a central London hospital but her injuries were non-threatening.</p>

<p>Three other women aged 41, 48, and 54, remained in hospital with non life-threatening injuries, police said.</p>

<p>"Any shooting incident is unacceptable, but for multiple people, including two children, to be injured in a shooting in the middle of a Saturday afternoon is shocking," said the police Superintendent Ed Wells.</p>

<p>"An investigation into this dreadful attack is already well under way involving local officers and specialist detectives," he added.<br />
A witness told MyLondon the shots were fired as mourners who had attended the mass watched doves being released afterwards.</p>
