Beating reigning world champion Ding Liren at the Tata Steel masters in Wijk aan Zee, the 18-year-old chess prodigy Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa became the No. 1-ranked Indian player for the first time in his career. Praggnanandhaa achieved the feat on Tuesday (Jan 16) after going past Liren in the Tata Steel masters being held in the Netherlands. With this, Praggananadhaa has gone past his idol Viswanathan Anand in the live classical chess rankings.

It is to be noted that the Pragganandhaa moved up by two spots to 11th overall with 2748.3 rating points, 0.3 more than the Indian legend. In addition, the youngster is now only the second from his country, after Anand, to beat a reigning world champion in classical chess. Thus, Pragganandhaa has once again made heads turn after an impressive win over Liren.

On Jan 3 (Wednesday), the 12-year-old sensation Ethan -- who hails from a village called Raia in Goa -- became the youngest International Master from his current age group. He achieved this after completing all the prerequisites for the prestigious title of International Master awarded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) following his third and final IM Norm at the "Vezerkepzo GM Christmas 2023" round-robin tournament in Budapest, Hungary.

The title will be officially conferred to Ethan by the FIDE in their next council meeting. It is to be noted that the young sensation achieved his 1st IM Norm at the "29th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival - Masters" Swiss-system tournament which was held in Abu Dhabi in August 2023. Soon, Ethan scored his 2nd IM Norm at the "Vezerkepzo GM November 2023" round-robin tournament, which took place in Hungary in November.

After Ethan's third and final IM norm, his father Edwin Vaz was quoted as saying by The Goan Network, "It is exciting to see how fast Ethan is progressing, with bare minimal opportunity. One can only wonder how high Ethan is destined to climb, if he receives the much needed financial support from corporate sponsors and the Govt. of Goa so that we can give him more exposure."

"We are very grateful to Ethan's coaches, Prakash Vikram Singh and GM Swayams Mishra, everyone at The King's School, especially Director Ligia Pereira and Chairman Melvin Pereira, IM Sagar Shah and ChessBase India, Ethan's grandparents Mariano and Eliza Fernandes and late Sebastiao and Luiza Vaz, and all our relatives, friends and well-wishers who contributed to Ethan's crowd funding campaign, without which it wouldn't have been possible," said Ethan's mother Linda Fernandes.

"We also thank GCA and AICF for their support always," she added.

Ethan is currently the second-ranked player in the U-12 Open category. In addition, he is one of the only two players in the category to have surpassed a FIDE rating of 2400 Elo; i.e. one of the prerequisites for the IM title. He will now set his sights on achieving the elusive Grandmaster title.

One can only wonder how high Ethan is destined to climb, if he receives the much needed financial support from corporate sponsors and the Govt. of Goa so that we can give him more exposure." "We are very grateful to Ethan's coaches, Prakash Vikram Singh and GM Swayams Mishra, everyone at The King's School, especially Director Ligia Pereira and Chairman Melvin Pereira, IM Sagar Shah and ChessBase India, Ethan's grandparents Mariano and Eliza Fernandes and late Sebastiao and Luiza Vaz, and all our relatives, friends and well-wishers who contributed to Ethan's crowd funding campaign, without which it wouldn't have been possible," said Ethan's mother Linda Fernandes.

American chess grandmaster Hans Niemann has denied using a 'sex toy' for cheating in the Sinquefield Cup against Magnus Carlsen in September 2022. Niemann had won the game but was accused of cheating by Carlsen.

In a recent chat with Piers Morgan, Neimann "categorically" denied the allegations categorically and said that 'it is very disheartening to be accused of cheating after a victory.'

"These things happen and I managed to learn a lot during that time and it really has taught me a lot of very important lessons about life and chess," Niemann said.

Morgan asked the American about the cheating allegations (that Niemann was getting signals from someone through the remote-controlled sex toy) in as many words, asking: "To be clear, on the specific allegation - have you ever used anal beads while playing chess?"

Th 20-year-old also replied with pinpoint accuracy of words: "Well, your curiosity is a bit concerning, you know - maybe you're personally interested, but I can tell you, no.

"Categorically, no, of course not."

The accusation from Carlsen led to a bitter war of words between the two players which eventually reached the court of law in October 2022.

An out-of-court settlement was struck between the two parties last month worth $100 million.

Apart from Carlsen, Chess.com, an online platform, was also sued by Niemann for saying that he 'likely' cheated in more than 100 games online.

American chess grandmaster Hans Niemann has denied using a 'sex toy' for cheating in the Sinquefield Cup against Magnus Carlsen in September 2022. Niemann had won the game but was accused of cheating by Carlsen.

American chess grandmaster Hans Niemann has denied using a 'sex toy' for cheating in the Sinquefield Cup against Magnus Carlsen in September 2022. Niemann had won the game but was accused of cheating by Carlsen. In a recent chat with Piers Morgan, Neimann "categorically" denied the allegations categorically and said that 'it is very disheartening to be accused of cheating after a victory.' "These things happen and I managed to learn a lot during that time and it really has taught me a lot of very important lessons about life and chess," Niemann said. Morgan asked the American about the cheating allegations (that Niemann was getting signals from someone through the remote-controlled sex toy) in as many words, asking: "To be clear, on the specific allegation - have you ever used anal beads while playing chess?" Also Read: Ben Stokes says 'not arrogant' to consider England ODI World Cup title contender Th 20-year-old also replied with pinpoint accuracy of words: "Well, your curiosity is a bit concerning, you know - maybe you're personally interested, but I can tell you, no. "Categorically, no, of course not." The accusation from Carlsen led to a bitter war of words between the two players which eventually reached the court of law in October 2022. An out-of-court settlement was struck between the two parties last month worth $100 million. Apart from Carlsen, Chess.com, an online platform, was also sued by Niemann for saying that he 'likely' cheated in more than 100 games online. The platform said so after doing their own investigation. While Niemann had admitted to cheating twice while aged 12 and 16, he profusely denied cheating in the Sinquefield Cup or any in-person game. Other than Carlsen, Niemann had also sued Hikaru Nakamura whom Niemann had accused of "amplifying and attempting to bolster Carlsen's false cheating allegations."
Early dominance from Praggnanandhaa

After starting with white pieces, 18-year-old Praggnanandhaa established an early dominance as he had an advantage of 20 minutes over veteran Carlsen during the ninth move of the contest. Praggnanandhaa’s offensive push forced Carlsen to take his time before he stormed back into the contest. It took over 15 minutes for the Norwegian Grandmaster to push for the 13th move in the game. It took him 27 minutes to think and deliver the 13th move to stop Praggnanandhaa from gaining any advantage.

However, precise thinking and quickfire moves from the five-time World Champion saw his emphatic return in the game. The Indian was put on the back foot as he took time to push for further moves. With time no longer his friend, Praggnanandhaa’s early time advantage was wiped out as Carlsen started to dominate during the final few moves.

However, with the contest reaching nowhere, both Grandmasters decided to shake hands and move to game two. It took 35 moves for both to come to the conclusion of a draw.

It is to be noted that Anand first broke into the top 10 for the first time in 1991. He has remained India's top-ranked player since January 1987. The teams competing in the League:

The Global Chess League, the first global chess franchise of its kind, brings together distinguished sports entrepreneurs as franchise owners. Leading global and Indian companies such as U SPORTS, Insurekot Sports (ISPL), Punit Balan Group, Triveni Group (Triveni Engineering & Industries Ltd. and Triveni Turbine Ltd.), Chingari App, and APL Apollo-led SG Sports all own one team each taking part in the competition.

The event will feature six teams, made up of six players. Each team will consist of one Icon player, two male players, two female players and one prodigy player (those born in 2002 and later).

The teams are:

•    Ganges Grandmasters {owned by Insurekot Sports (ISPL)}
•    Triveni Continental Kings {owned by Triveni Group (Triveni Engineering & Industries Ltd. and Triveni Turbine Ltd.)}
• SG Alpine Warriors (owned by APL Apollo-led SG Sports)
•    Chingari Gulf Titans {owned by Chingari App (Tech4Billion Group)}
• upGrad Mumba Masters (owned by U SPORTS)
• Balan Alaskan Knights (owned by Punit Balan Group (PBG)

A new competition concept:

The inaugural event will display a completely new chess format reminiscent of the Champions League in football or the Indian Premier League in cricket.

The Global Chess League will feature a unique playing concept – with each match of the league taking place at a different time, played in a double round-robin format. For the first time in chess, all members of a team will be playing a match with pieces of the same colour.

A new scoring system with match points and game points awarded based on the outcome with white/black pieces brings a new element of dynamics and uncertainty to the rankings. While a game won with white pieces will bring 3 game points, a game won with black pieces will bring four points, and a draw brings one point to each side. The team which scores the most game points in a match will receive an additional three match points, while an even outcome will see both teams get a match point each.

The time control for the games is 15 minutes per game plus a 30-second bonification for each move. The top two teams with the most match points will play in the finals on the 2nd of July. The regulations of the event can be found here.

The opening ceremony:

The opening ceremony of the Global Chess League is scheduled for June 21st at 7:00 PM local time in The Ritz-Carlton DIFC, Dubai. The ceremony will also feature the presentation of the winning trophy as well as the official anthem of the Global Chess League. The first match will take place on June 22nd at 5:30 PM GST (7:00 PM IST) at the Le Méridien Hotel (the tournament venue) between Triveni Continental Kings and upGrad Mumba Masters.

Chess: What is Global Chess League? Here's all you need to know about the franchise-based tournament

In what comes as a bizarre turn of events, a man dressed as a woman managed to cheat his way through a Chess Championship in the African country of Kenya. The man registered himself under the name Millicent Awuor, wore a 'niqab' and managed to take the mickey out of everyone at the tournament before getting caught.

The impostor managed to keep up his act and stormed through the first few rounds. According to the organisers, to keep his identity hidden, the player wore a niqab each day, which left his glasses and eyes visible only. Even during the registration process, he didn't utter a word and only scribbled on the paper during matches.

The tournament executives of the Kenya Open were apprehensive of the said participant but refused to intervene thinking she was an orthodox Muslim woman.

However, the lid was blown open after Awuor defeated former national champion Gloria Jumba and Ugandan top player Ampaira Shakira. Chief arbiter Antony Kionga stated that as the tournament progressed, both players and his staff noticed that the person in question seemed suspicious. The player had an odd walking style and wore shoes commonly used by men.

Afterwards, Kionga decided to take action and called the 'niqab-clad' woman to a private room and demanded an identification document. No sooner did Kionga ask for the documents, the impostor broke down and admitted to his wrongdoing.

The man, later identified as Stanley Omondi, said he was a university student, desperate for money and that's why he took to cheating.

"The reason was due to financial needs but I deeply regret my action and [am] ready to accept all consequences," he wrote in a letter.

Omondi had an international rating nearing 1500 and a blitz rating close to 1750. He has been booted out of the tournament while his points have been awarded to the opponents.
