Bihar Elections: BJP's Ram Kripal Yadav Trails From Danapur | WION

As voting got underway in 121 constituencies in the first phase of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections on Thursday, political attention once again turned to the seats that defined the razor-thin verdict of 2020. That election was one of the tightest in Bihar’s history, with several constituencies decided by margins of less than a thousand votes, contests so close that a handful of ballots separated victory from defeat.
Narrowest margins, widest implications
In 2020, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) emerged as the single largest party with 75 seats, followed closely by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with 74. The Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] won 43, while NDA allies Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) and Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) secured four each. Eleven seats across districts such as Nalanda, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Begusarai, Khagaria, Sheikhpura, Kaimur, Rohtas, and Jamui were decided by fewer than 1,000 votes, making them some of the most scrutinised battlegrounds again this year. JD(U) candidates had the narrowest escapes in four seats, Hilsa, Barbigha, Parbatta, and Bhore, while the BJP managed to hold on to Bachhwara and Bakhri by similarly slim margins. The RJD and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) also managed one nail-biting win each. In total, 52 constituencies across the state were decided by fewer than 5,000 votes, according to Election Commission data. Of these, the RJD took 15, JD(U) 13, and the BJP 9.
Constituencies where every vote counted
The tightest race of 2020 came in Hilsa, Nalanda, where JD(U)’s Krishnamurari Sharan defeated RJD’s Shakti Singh Yadav by just 12 votes, one of the narrowest margins ever recorded in Bihar. Both contestants are in the fray again this year, keeping the contest under the spotlight, especially as Hilsa lies in Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s home district. In Sheikhpura’s Barbigha seat, JD(U)’s Sudarshan Kumar won by only 113 votes but was later expelled and now contests as an Independent. His party has fielded Dr Pushpanjay in his place. Begusarai’s Matihani saw LJP’s Rajkumar Singh win by 333 votes; he has since joined the JD(U) and is again a key contender. Another tight finish came in Bhore, where JD(U)’s Sunil Kumar edged out CPI(ML)’s Jitendra Paswan by 462 votes. BJP’s Surendra Mehta secured Bachhwara by just 484 votes over CPI’s Awadhesh Kumar Rai, while in Bakhri, CPI’s Suryakant Paswan defeated BJP’s Ramshankar Paswan by 777 votes. In Muzaffarpur’s Kurhani, RJD’s Anil Sahni beat BJP’s Kedar Prasad Gupta by 712 votes, though Gupta later reclaimed the seat in a 2022 by-election. Independent Sumit Kumar Singh won Chakia by 581 votes and subsequently joined the JD(U), while in Parbatta, JD(U)’s Dr Sanjeev Kumar beat RJD’s Digambar Tiwari by 951 votes but is now contesting on an RJD ticket.
Battlegrounds that still shape 2025

The narrow victories of 2020 continue to influence Bihar’s political equations. Many of those marginal constituencies are part of the current Phase 1 polling, making them crucial indicators of voter mood. With the same candidates often facing off once more, and margins in double or triple digits last time, even minor shifts in turnout or alliances could alter results. As the 2025 election unfolds, these finely balanced battlegrounds are expected to test party strategies and voter loyalties alike. If 2020 proved anything, it is that in Bihar, the difference between forming the government and sitting in opposition can come down to just a few hundred votes.

In a sharp political attack, Rahul Gandhi has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of resorting to “drama and theatrics” to win votes, saying the PM would even “dance for votes.” The comments, made during a rally, have sparked a heated exchange between Congress and the BJP. Here’s how both sides are responding and what this fiery exchange says about India’s election season tone.

Rahul Gandhi Slams PM Modi, Accuses Him Of Theatrics For Votes

A political storm brews over Delhi’s cloud-seeding experiments to fight pollution and induce rainfall. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and BJP are at loggerheads: with each side accusing the other of political theatrics ahead of winter smog season. What is cloud seeding? Does it really work? And why has it turned into a fresh flashpoint in Delhi’s political and environmental battle?

Opposition AAP & Ruling BJP Clash Over Cloud Seeding

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) slammed Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta-led BJP government for its "failure" to curb pollution in the city, after the national capital witnessed a poor and toxic air quality following Diwali. However, in response to the criticism, the BJP blamed the citizens for bursting crackers and farmers for stubble burning in nearby states. AAP MLA Gopal Rai accused the Delhi government of "making excuses" and not taking action to prevent the pollution. "There is a lot of pollution in Delhi. The level of pollution has increased. But the Delhi government is not doing anything. They are making excuses and blaming other states. BJP is in power everywhere in UP, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Why didn't they talk to any other state first before Diwali?" he said, ANI reported. He alleged that BJP leaders were encouraging people to burst firecrackers despite the ongoing air emergency in the national capital. Meanwhile, AAP state president Saurabh Bharadwaj also took a dig at BJP’s Rekha Gupta over the worsening pollution levels, saying she did not even know how to “pronounce AQI.” "We don't know what the government has done. The Chief Minister does not even know how to pronounce AQI. She calls it IQ, QQ. She can't even say AQI. She has no understanding. The government has failed to stop pollution," he said, ANI reported. Bharadwaj further accused the BJP government of "misleading" the public, claiming that it had failed to initiate the promised artificial rain in Delhi. "The government lies. The government said that after Diwali, they would fix all the pollution by conducting artificial rain. Did it happen? No, my question is that if you could have conducted artificial rain, then why didn't you do it? Do you want people to fall ill?" he asked.
BJP's response to AAP
The BJP, meanwhile, attributed the pollution crisis to stubble burning in neighbouring states. "Delhi bearing the brunt of pollution from neighbouring states, stubble being burnt despite the Supreme Court's stricture," Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said. In addition, BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya added that Delhi would continue to suffer until “Punjab stops stubble burning.” "Stop blaming Deepawali for the sins of the Aam Aadmi Party — it's their smoke, not the festival's lamps or firecrackers, that darkens Delhi's skies. Their dark shadow still looms large over the Capital," he said.

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni led a demonstration and “purification” ritual at the Shaniwarwada fort of Pune, Maharashtra, on Sunday after a group of Muslim women offered namaz at the fort. Her move has attracted political backlash from Opposition parties, accusing her of attempting to polarise voters before local civic polls. The protest, which Kulkarni led, was organised by the Patit Pavan Sanghatna and other Hindu outfits. Along with protest, Kulkarni and her supporters cleaned the spot using gaumutra (cow urine) and also performed Shiv Vandana as part of the ritual, where Muslim women offered namaz, according to a report by The Indian Express. Before the protest, Kulkarni said in a post on social media platform X, “We will not allow ‘namaz’ in Shaniwarwada, the Hindu community has now become awakened…Chalo Shaniwarwada.” Speaking to The Indian Express, MP Medha Kulkarni said, “We performed Shiv Vandana and did purification of the spot where the namaz was offered…To protest against the incident and to ensure that Pune’s social harmony is not disturbed, the Sakal Hindu Samaj organised a protest and demanded police action in this matter.” When she was questioned whether the spot had become “impure” after performing prayers, she responded, “Shaniwarwada is an ASI protected historical monument. It is a symbol of Hindavi Swaraj set up by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. We cannot allow anyone to offer namaz here. It is not a mosque.” She also referred the spot an “illegal religious structure” outside the fort. “If one wants to offer namaz in this manner, then Hindus should also be allowed to perform ‘aarti’ in masjids or in Taj Mahal,” she said.
Opposition lashes out at BJP Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni
In response to the protest and purification ritual, Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the Congress, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) lashed out at the BJP Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni over her actions. “Some Muslim women offered prayers inside Shaniwarwada, after which some BJP members went there and ‘purified’ the spot with cow urine. These people should remember that even Mastani had stayed in Shaniwarwada. Kulkarni probably is not aware that Peshwe ‘sardars’ removed the flag of Hindavi Swaraj atop the Shaniwarwada and hoisted the Union Jack,” said Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant, The Indian Express reported. Objecting to the remarks of Kulkarni about the dargah near the site, Sawant also questioned, “When the Peshwas had no problem, what is her problem? What will she do with the air that touches the ‘dargah’ and then reaches her…Is she going to purify her nose as well?” Pune Congress chief Arvind Shinde announced that the party would soon stage a protest against the MP. “Ahead of the civic elections, this is nothing but an attempt to polarise the Hindu voters. BJP raises such issues deliberately ahead of elections. BJP wants people to react to such issues and galvanise Hindu voters,” Shinde added. He further added that the dargah located outside Shaniwarwada has been there “since the Peshwa era” and holds approval from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Bihar BJP president Dilip Jaiswal said on Wednesday that the NDA will secure an absolute two-thirds majority in the two-phased Bihar assembly polls and took a dig at the Mahagathbandhan for not announcing their seat-sharing arrangement or candidates yet.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its second list of 12 candidates for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections in November on Wednesday. The list of 12 has two women candidates, including folk singer Maithili Thakur, who joined the party a day before. Thakur will contest from the Alinagar assembly seat in Darbhanga district. The list also includes the name of IPS officer Anand Mishra, who was earlier in the Jan Suraaj Party and switched to the BJP. He will contest from the Buxar assembly seat. With this, BJP has so far announced the names of 83 candidates out of 101 it has been allocated in NDA’s seat-sharing arrangement.

C.P. Radhakrishan has been elected as the 15th Vice President of India following the latest Vice Presidential elections. His victory marks a significant moment in India’s political leadership transition. Watch the video to know more on this!

CP Radhakrishnan Elected As India's 15th Vice President

India is at the cusp of choosing its new vice-president after the unexpected resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar in July. What was meant to be a mid-term continuation of routine parliamentary business has suddenly become a high-stakes political contest, drawing attention to two sharply different candidates and the power balance between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition INDIA bloc.
Why a new election was needed
Vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down on July 21, citing health reasons. His exit created a rare mid-term vacancy in the vice-presidential office, prompting the Election Commission to announce a special election for September 9, 2025. The vice-president of India, who is also the ex-officio Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, holds a crucial constitutional position—balancing legislative responsibilities while being first in line to the presidency should the need arise.
The candidates in fray

CP Radhakrishnan: NDA’s Pick
The NDA has fielded CP Radhakrishnan, a veteran leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Currently serving as Governor of Maharashtra, Radhakrishnan is not new to politics or parliamentary life. A two-time Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore, he also led the BJP in Tamil Nadu as state president. Over the years, he has developed a reputation for loyalty to the party and long administrative experience, which the NDA is banking on to project stability. His nomination was announced on August 17 and quickly secured support from several allies, including the YSR Congress Party, JD(U), AIADMK, NCP, TDP, and Shiv Sena. That broad coalition makes him the frontrunner in terms of numbers.
B Sudarshan Reddy: INDIA Bloc’s challenger
The opposition INDIA bloc has united behind Justice (Retd.) B. Sudarshan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge who also served as Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court and later became Goa’s first Lokayukta. Reddy’s candidature, announced on August 19, is a deliberate contrast to the NDA’s political choice. The opposition is framing him as a figure of integrity and constitutional commitment, aiming to appeal to lawmakers’ sense of independence and conscience.
How the election works
The vice-president is chosen by members of both houses of Parliament through a secret ballot under the single transferable vote system. This means MPs are free to vote beyond party lines, giving rise to the possibility of cross-voting. Polling is being held on September 9 at Vasudha Hall in Parliament House, running from 10am to 5pm, with counting set to begin immediately afterward. The result is expected by evening. With 781 MPs eligible, and around 770 expected to cast votes (given abstentions by some parties like BJD and BRS), the halfway mark is 386 votes.
The numbers game
In terms of raw arithmetic, the NDA enjoys a comfortable lead. Together with allies and external supporters, Radhakrishnan is estimated to command between 425 and 429 votes, already above the majority threshold. The INDIA bloc controls about 324 MPs — a significant bloc but not enough to tilt the balance on its own. Their strategy lies in presenting Justice Reddy as a moral alternative and hoping to secure cross-party votes or at least narrow the margin to showcase opposition strength.
What’s at stake
The vice-president plays a pivotal role in managing the Rajya Sabha, often becoming a key figure in balancing debates and ensuring the smooth functioning of the upper house. With India’s Parliament entering a period of heated debates on reforms, economic policy, and foreign affairs, the choice of Vice President will have immediate practical implications. Moreover, this election is a test of strength between the ruling NDA and the INDIA bloc. For the NDA, a win by Radhakrishnan would reaffirm its dominant parliamentary control. For the opposition, even a closer-than-expected result would be touted as proof of growing cohesion among its ranks.
Likely outcome?
Given the current numbers, CP Radhakrishnan appears strongly positioned to become India’s next vice-president. However, the secrecy of the ballot and the possibility of cross-voting always leave room for surprises. By the end of September 9, India will know whether the numbers held or if Justice Reddy managed to script an unexpected twist.
