The government of the northern Indian state of Punjab came under fire after investigators revealed that a televised interview of a major gangster was conducted at a police station. Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s interview was recorded at CIA police station Kharar in the state. Reacting to the development, the Punjab and Haryana High Court said, "The black sheep in state police must be identified and brought to book at the earliest."

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) revealed in court on Wednesday (Aug 7) that the interviewee was in police custody at the time of the recording.

Earlier in December last year, the court had described Lawrence Bishnoi’s in-custody interview as “glorifying crime and criminals” and a matter of grave concern.

Bishnoi is charged with the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. His name is reportedly mentioned in over 71 cases in total, including a conviction in at least four cases.

<h2>Opposition demands CM’s resignation</h2>

The state’s Leader of the Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa of the Congress party, said&nbsp; on Wednesday that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the minister who holds the Home and Jail portfolios should immediately resign.

“The Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government has been lying since March 2023. Now, after this revelation in the High Court, Bhagwant Mann owes an explanation to the people of Punjab, particularly the parents of slain Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu,” Bajwa said.

He then appealed to the voters to ensure the victory of all seven candidates of the AAP-Congress combine in Delhi.

The AAP is a member of the INDIA bloc which has positioned itself to take on the BJP in the upcoming April–May Lok Sabha elections.

While AAP is contesting from four of Delhi’s seven Lok Sabha seats, the Congress will field candidates from three.

After the launch of the campaign by Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal, BJP’s Delhi chief Virendra Sachdeva took a dig at the AAP chief stating that the party's apt slogan would be “nine-year rule of Kejriwal marked by loot and corruption, rendering Delhi miserable”.

“The people of Delhi, Punjab and Gujarat will reject Kejriwal in such a way that even the AAP’s national status will be snatched,” he said.

The AAP has entered into a seat-sharing&nbsp;deal for Delhi, Gujarat and Haryana with the Congress party. Whereas in Punjab, both parties have agreed to contest the elections independently.

Right before the discussion on Punjab's state budget during a session of the legislative assembly in Chandigarh, CM Mann handed over an envelope with a lock and key to the Governor and consequently asked him to lock the opposition inside the assembly, so that they could not "run away" from the discussions.

This triggered a heated exchange of words and a sharp show of optics between CM Mann and the Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa.&nbsp;

The Congress is the principal opposition party in Punjab where Aam Aadmi Party is in power.&nbsp;

A fourth round of talks was held between the Union ministers and farmer leaders on Sunday (Feb 18). Following the meeting, while talking to the reporters, Goyal said that the panel has suggested that government agencies buy cotton, maize, and pulse crops for five years at minimum support rates after reaching a deal with farmers.

"Cooperative societies like the NCCF (National Cooperative Consumers Federation) and NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India) will enter into a contract with those farmers who grow 'tur dal', 'urad dal', 'masoor dal' or maize for buying their crop at MSP for next five years," said Goyal.

"First, a guarantee will have to be given, which will be possible only if NAFED, NCCF and Cotton Corporation get a guarantee of 5 years. In which there are 6 to 7 decisions, this proposal has been given in which the farmers will take the decision and then they will go and discuss," Mann said.

However, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex body responsible for the&nbsp;management of Gurdwaras in India, has slammed Mann for the move.&nbsp;

Gurbani, literally meaning the voice of Guru (spiritual teacher), refers&nbsp;to various compositions of wisdom and lessons by ten Sikh Gurus -- collectively assorted in Guru Granth Sahib in the central holy religious scripture of Sikhism.&nbsp;

"This decision has come as a reminiscent of excesses committed by the Mughals, the British and [slain PM] Indira Gandhi, but Khalsa Panth will give a befitting reply to this," he added.

"The announcement made by Bhagwant Mann relating to the telecast of Gurbani is not merely a direct attack on gurdwaras of Khalsa Panth, but on Sikh community also."

Tweeting in Punjabi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sunil Jakhar cautioned the Punjab government that gurdwaras are meant to pay obeisance, and not to pick a confrontation. "I am of the view that there should not be monopoly over telecast of Gurbani, but it is highly condemnable the way you are interfering in Sikh religious affairs to settle political scores and I strongly oppose the move to amend Gurdwara Act (Which is not even in the domain of State’s right)," he said.

Proposal to make broadcast of Gurbani from Golden Temple free triggers massive row in Punjab

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann sanctioned Rs 20 crore (around 200 million USD) for the installation of CCTV cameras at strategic locations in border villages to maintain strict surveillance on the movement of cross-border smugglers and drones, Special Director General of Police (DGP) Arpit Shukla said on Wednesday, as cited by news agency ANI.

He further added that DGP Punjab Gaurav Yadav also announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh (1,211.72 USD) for providing information on drone movement leading to the recovery of weapons or narcotics.

The Special Director General of Police, Shukla, accompanied by the Inspector General (IG) of the BSF's Punjab Frontier headquartered in Jalandhar district Atul Fulzele, was in Khasa, Amritsar, for a joint coordination-cum-review meeting with senior officials of Border Security Force and Punjab Police, as per a statement issued.

The meeting was aimed at strengthening the security at the border in order to prevent cross-border smuggling.

The Punjab Police's DIG, Border Range, Narinder Bhargav, and DIG Ferozepur Range, Ranjit Singh Dhillon, along with four other DIGs, and four BSF commandants were among the senior officials who attended the talks.

Shukla called for greater synergy and teamwork between BSF and Punjab Police and further stated that both the elite forces should work together and exhibit better coordination to counter the Drone operations at Punjab borders, which have emerged as a new threat, according to the statement.

"He then stressed the need to carry out evidence-based and proactive policing to prevent the smuggling of narcotics and weapons into Punjab from across the border," it said.

"He further discussed the strategic locations and hotspots in border villages to install CCTV cameras to keep vigil over Indian Nationals involved in cross-border smuggling. He asked the BSF officials to share inputs of movements of suspected persons with the Punjab Police so that they can keep a sharp vigil on their activities and ensure penal action against those found involved in any criminal activity," the statement added.

He also proposed to activate village defence committees in the border areas. "These committees will work as eyes and ears of the police and supplement the efforts of the Punjab Police to wipe out drugs, terrorists, and gangsters from the border state," Shukla added.

<h2>BSF shot down drone along India-Pakistan border in Punjab</h2>

Lately, many incidents of alleged drone intrusions by Pakistan have been reported in the north Indian state of Punjab.&nbsp;

Last month, Border Security Force (BSF) shot down a Pakistani drone which was apparently trying to sneak into Indian territory, officials said on April 27. It was carrying packets of heroin and opium, the officials added.&nbsp;

BSF said in a press release said that at about 2:20 am (local time), BSF troops deployed at the border, heard the buzzing sound of a suspected drone entering from Pakistan to Indian territory and as per the laid down drill, troops immediately reacted to intercept the drone by firing.&nbsp;

On March 28, BSF foiled another intrusion attempt by a Pakistani drone in Amritsar after it entered Indian territory. The paramilitary force stated that it was carrying a consignment of contraband items.

Earlier, BSF troops shot down a Pakistani drone along the Indo-Pak border which intruded on the Amritsar sector in the intervening night of February 2 to February 3 at 2:30 AM. The drone entered the area of responsibility of the Border Observation Post (BOP) Rear Kakkar in the Amritsar sector of Punjab, said BSF.

Bhagwant Mann to get first Council of Ministers on March 19

Arvind Kejriwal, congratulated the people of India's northern state Punjab for his political party's stellar performance in the state assembly elections, calling it "revolutionary".

Election Commission data shows that&nbsp;the Aam Aadmi Party is leading in 92&nbsp;seats out of 117 in the Punjab Assembly as of 4&nbsp;PM. This is followed by Congress with 17 seats and Shiromani Akali Dal with 7.

The party's win in Punjab would mark the party's first in the state and a dramatic turnaround from its performance in the 2017 elections when it had finished second behind Congress.

Congress nominated Charanjit Singh Channi for the chief ministerial post days before the elections on February 20, endorsing him as the first Dalit chief minister in Punjab.

The clincher for the talented comedian-turned-politician, though, was the outpouring of support on Kejriwal's phone line, which he launched on January 13 and was open until 5 p.m. on January 17.&nbsp;

Kejriwal issued an open invitation to Punjab voters to choose their chief ministerial candidate, regardless of age, sex, religion, or occupation.

With less than 24 hours to the deadline, Mann had established an unassailable lead over the competition.&nbsp;

AAP president Arvind Kejriwal told reporters that Bhagwant Mann, a two-time AAP MP from Sangrur, received more than 93 percent of the votes cast by phone and WhatsApp.

According to the AAP, more than 21 lakh people voted.

Kejriwal revealed that Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu received around 3% of the vote.
