A massive fire in Bangladesh erupted at a Dhaka restaurant killing 46 people. Bangladesh has a history of such infernos in commercial buildings - in Dhaka and outside. Booming domestic industry often means buildings where inadequate safety measures often go unchecked. The South Asian Nation has seen some of the worst building blazes in the world in recent years, the question is when will authorities wake up?

A high court in Bangladesh on Sunday (Feb 25) barred the adoption of Asian elephants from the wild. Speaking to news agency AFP, Bangladesh's Deputy Attorney General Amit Das Gupta said that the high court suspended all licenses for the captive rearing of elephants. Hailing the court's decision, activists said the suspension order would stop the torture of captive Asian elephants in the name of training. "This is a landmark order," said Rakibul Haque Emil, head of the animal rights group People for Animal Welfare (PAW) Foundation in Bangladeshi to AFP. Once a major home for Asian elephants Bangladesh had been one of the major homes for Asian elephants. However, poaching and habitat loss caused a severe downfall in their numbers and the animals became critically endangered in the country. As logging and farming encroach on elephant territories, the animals are captured in the country's northern and southeastern hills. AFP reported that the forest department used to issue licenses to logging groups who use elephants to drag tree trunks, or to circus groups -- to adopt the animals. In May last year, a young elephant, used for begging on the streets, was killed by a train. In 2019, police rescued two emaciated elephants from their owners after they were used for roadside begging. The elephants were handed over to the Dhaka Zoo. PIL filed against captive elephant licensing The PAW and prominent actor Jaya Ahsan launched a public interest litigation against captive elephant licensing. PAW's head Emil said on Sunday, "In this name of training elephants, private licensees including circus parties brutally separate elephant calves from their mother, shackle them for months and then torture them to teach tricks." He added that they would mobilise support for the rehabilitation of captive elephants. "Several countries in Asia such as Thailand and Nepal have found some success in rehabilitating captive elephants. We shall do it here," the official said. (With inputs from agencies)

There is a war brewing between Bangladesh and the east Indian state of West Bengal. While the two states got divided back in 1947- with Bangladesh becoming predominantly a Muslim state and called East Pakistan and subsequently Bangladesh in 1971, the war this time is not over religion or ethnicity but over a saree- the six-yard garment worn by women in several parts of South-Asia. In January earlier this year, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the GI (geographical indication) tag for Tangail saree has been awarded to West Bengal.

Taking to X, Mamata Banerjee wrote, "Three handloom saree items of West Bengal, namely Tangail of Nadia and Purba Bardhaman, and Korial & Garad of Murshidabad and Birbhum, have been registered and recognized as GI products. I congratulate the artisans for their skills and achievements. Reactions on GI tag for Tangail saree

Netizens from both India and Bangladesh have reacted to the GI tag and commented on Banerjee's post.

Most Indian rejoiced and celebrated the honour. "A moment of pride indeed!," wrote one. Another congratulated the CM and said, "This is excellent news which will give huge boost to the textile industry and weavers of Bengal. Another feather in the cap exemplifying the great work being done by the Bengal Govt under the dynamic leadership of our beloved CM."

While some questioned the origin of the saree. "But isn’t Tangail from Bangladesh?" asked one user. "You should be ashamed of your cheating.Tangail was famous for it's handloom sarees since the British Raj and even today Tangail which is a district of Bangladesh produces finest sarees. You are shameless," wrote another.

Why Bangladesh is calling the Tangail saree as its own?

Many have argued that the traditional hand-woven saree borrows its name from its place of origin Tangail, a district in Bangladesh. However, West Bengal has claimed that the saree originated and is weaved in the Purba Bardhaman & Nadia districts of the state.

When the GI tag was allocated to West Bengal, many in Bangladesh reacted strongly. Speaking to a daily, fashion designer, researcher, and President of the National Crafts Council of Bangladesh (NCCB), Chandra Shekhar Saha, remarked, "There is no doubt that Tangail district is situated in Bangladesh. So, we have a strong claim over Tangail saris. It is a matter of great regret that India has received the GI tag, but all is not lost yet and we can still get the GI tag."

Tangail saris, known for their unique handwoven techniques, designs, and motifs, have been traditionally produced in the Tangail district of Bangladesh. The saree originated in the late 1800s. It is unique due to its handwoven techniques, designs, and motifs and is worn by millions of women across the world.

Many claim that artisans have been weaving cotton sarees for generations. Tangails are also known as Tant sarees- or Bengali cotton sarees. Some in Bangladesh claim that many years back, artisans moved to Tangail district as the weather was best suitable for weaving such sarees. The place then gave the name to sarees.

Bangladeshis also claim that West Bengal's Purba Bardhaman and Nadia districts have been producing the Tangail sarees but it has not originated in these areas.

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina endorsing Tangail saree

Ever since the news of West Bengal being awarded the GI tag for Tangail saree came to light, Bangladesh has been trying to claim it as its own. The country's Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina has been seen wearing only Tangail sarees for all her public outings in the recent past.

“For the last couple of days, I wore a Tangail saree to show that it is ours. No one else can take it," she said.

The prime minister referred to the controversy during a press conference on the outcomes of her recent three-day visit to Munich in Germany to attend the Munich Security Conference 2024.

West Bengal's Tagail is different

According to Journal No. 178 published by the Chennai-based office of Geographical Indication, the West Bengal's Tangail saree is different from its Bangladeshi counterpart- hence explaining the GI tag. The Indian tangail is a fusion of Tangail and Shanitipur weaves- which is typically made in Nadia and Purba Bardhaman districts.

Dhaka can approach the World Trade Organization (WTO) to complain of alleged violation of intellectual property rights and seek redressal over the GI tag. So far there has been an outrage in the country over the six yard garmet but no offiical word if they have already approached WTO.

Explained: Whose saree is it anyway? Bangladesh cries foul as West Bengal claims Tangail saree as its own

A Bangladesh bank on Saturday (Feb 17) confirmed that it had expelled Nobel peace laureate Muhammad Yunus from the two businesses that he founded, following his conviction in a criminal case.

Eighty-three-year-old Yunus has been hailed for lifting millions of people out of poverty with his microlender Grameen Bank. However, he has earned the animosity of long-time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who accused him of "sucking blood" from the poor.

The Hasina-led government propelled Yunus' resignation from the bank in the year 2011, following which he focused on running dozens of anti-poverty organisations that he founded.

The bank's current government-appointed chairman on Saturday (Feb 17) said that its board had nominated new directors for at least two firms that were still under Yunus' control.

"They don't own the enterprises," A.K.M Saiful Majid told reporters. "They are subsidiaries of the Grameen Bank."

Grameen Bank chief legal counsel Masud Akhter released a statement saying that Majid will now head Grameen Telecom and Grameen Kalyan.

Grameen Telecom, which was created to offer cheaper mobile phone services in rural areas, has over the years become one of Bangladesh's richest companies.

It holds a 34 per cent stake in the country's largest mobile phone network, worth billions of dollars.

Earlier, on Thursday (Feb 15), Yunus during a press briefing said that a group of "outsiders" this week entered the building which houses his firms and made attempts to "forcefully" take over the offices and lock the staff out.

He said there was no legal basis for his expulsion but that police had denied registering a criminal complaint.

Majid rejected the claim about the seizure being illegal or a forceful one.

Yunus' popularity among the Bangladeshi public has for years reserved him as a potential rival to Hasina, who secured a fifth term in office in January 2024 after an election boycotted by opposition parties.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has left out former skipper Tamim Iqbal from the central contract list, leaving the batter's future in uncertainty. Iqbal has not been on good terms with the BCB and it all started in 2023 in run-up to the ODI World Cup. The batter had retired from international cricket before reversing his decision in 24 hours. Tamim then quit captaincy two months before the World Cup.

With his name not in the list of Bangladesh's centrally contracted players, it looks highly unlikely that Tamim would be considered for selection in future. Apart from him, Ebadot Hossain, Afif Hossain, and Mosaddek Hossain have also been left out of the central contract.

A Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) sepoy was killed by a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan (soldier) along the India-Bangladesh international border in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Monday (Jan 22) during an attempt to foil a cattle smuggling bid.

The BGB sepoy was not in uniform and allegedly 'disguised as a cattle smuggler', according to a PTI report. The incident transpired when a group of Bangladeshi cattle smugglers attempted to cross over to India by breaching the newly installed barbed wire fence. The Indian soldier noticed the group of unidentified individuals, engaging in suspicious activities and approached them. "When the jawan confronted the smugglers, they, realising that he was alone, surrounded him and attacked him using sharp-edged sickles," a BSF official stated. Upon being attacked, the soldier engaged in self-defence and retaliated by opening fire. Consequently, one of the attackers, who turned out to be a BGB sepoy, suffered injuries. The rest of the attackers utilised the heavy fog in the area to evade the Indian soldier and managed to hop over to the other side of the fence with the cattle. After the incident, during a flag meeting, BGB informed BSF that one of its personnel was missing and suspected he had crossed into the Indian side. "Hearing the sound of fire, other jawans reached the spot and immediately removed the injured man and got him admitted to a government hospital in Bongaon, where he died during treatment. During a thorough search, one animal and some sharp weapons were found at the site," BSF said. "Upon identification from a photograph, it was known that the deceased man was Mohammad Riyasudin, serving as a sepoy in BGB, and was moving with cattle smugglers," it added. Additionally, BSF apprised the Ministry of External Affairs and Bangladesh High Commission in Kolkata of the incident.
