Torrential rains in Bangladesh have triggered landslides burying alive at least nine people and forcing thousands to flee to higher ground. Officials from security camps have said that those killed in landslides were in the Southeastern Cox Bazaar District.

Bangladesh Landslide: Nine buried alive in southeastern Cox's Bazar district

Torrential rains in Bangladesh have triggered landslides burying alive at least nine people and forcing thousands to flee to higher ground, police and government officials in the low-lying nation said Wednesday.

Schools have been turned into shelters for those abandoning their homes to rising river waters, while more than a million people have been stranded in northern areas.

Bangladesh, a nation of around 170 million people, is among the countries most vulnerable to disasters and climate change, according to the Global Climate Risk Index.

The annual monsoon rains cause widespread destruction every year, but experts say climate change is shifting weather patterns and increasing the number of extreme weather events.

"At least 700,000 people have been stranded by flash floods and heavy rains in Sylhet district, and another 500,000 people in neighbouring Sunamganj district," Abu Ahmed Siddique, commissioner of Bangladesh's northeastern Sylhet district, told AFP.

Those killed in landslides were in the southeastern Cox's Bazar district.

Eight were Rohingya refugees from neighbouring Myanmar, and the other was from Bangladesh, said Amir Jafar, a police official in command of security in the camps.

- 'Buried under the mud' -

"They were sleeping in their shelters when heavy rains overnight triggered the landslides in five spots of the camps," Jafar told AFP. "They were buried under the mud."

He said hundreds of refugees had been moved from areas deemed at risk.

"The rain is still going on," he said.

About one million Rohingya live in makeshift shelters of bamboo and tarpaulins in dozens of scattered camps cut out of cleared forest land on the slopes of small hills, where landslides are a regular threat.

In Sylhet, lashing rain and rivers swollen by flooding upstream in India also swamped heavily populated areas.

"More than 17,000 people have been taken to shelters only in Sylhet district," senior local government official Sheikh Russel Hasan said, warning rivers were still rising.

Much of Bangladesh is made up of deltas as the Himalayan rivers of the Ganges and Brahmaputra slowly wind towards the sea.

Floods in 2022 in Sylhet were some of the worst on record, leaving millions stranded and around a hundred killed.

Towhidul Islam, chief administrative officer of Gowainghat, part of Sylhet, said the river had risen two centimetres (0.7 inches) in the first three hours after dawn.

"If the rain and water level continues to increase, the situation will get worse, like 2022", Islam told AFP.

According to recent studies, dangerous levels of harmful "forever chemicals" are found in rivers, lakes, and tap water in Bangladeshi regions that are home to garment manufacturers.

According to recent studies, dangerous levels of harmful "forever chemicals" are found in rivers, lakes, and tap water in Bangladeshi regions that are home to garment manufacturers. Some of these chemicals have been linked to major health problems. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), sometimes referred to as everlasting chemicals, were discovered in 27 water samples taken near textile industries in the capital city of Dhaka. Bangladesh is a global centre for fashion, providing brands to international markets. The research by the Environment and Social Development Organization (Esdo) and Ipen, a network of NGOs, states that PFAS levels were found to be much higher in many of the samples obtained in 2019 and 2022 than in the EU and the US legal limits, and some of the samples included one or more internationally prohibited substances. A group of around 10,000 chemicals known as PFAS have been connected to several severe diseases, including several types of cancer. Since the 1950s, they have been added to and utilised in the production of common consumer goods. They are referred to as "forever chemicals" because, according to experts, it may take hundreds or even thousands of years for them to break down once the items in which they were employed are discarded. PFAS have the potential to linger in water for generations if they seep into it. 50% of PFAS used worldwide is accounted for by the textile sector. Also read: Kilauea volcano could erupt like a 'stomp-rocket toy', says study Bangladesh is a signatory to the Stockholm Convention, which has banned certain PFAS worldwide and is now reviewing others. The international agreement seeks to shield the environment and public health from the harm that persistent organic pollutants may cause. Sixty-seven per cent of the 27 samples containing PFAS included one or more PFAS compounds that are banned worldwide. High-level samples were frequently found close to textile facilities, indicating that the sector may be a major contributor to water pollution. The Karnatali River water sample had the highest PFAS concentrations, more than 300 times the recommended EU limit. Since Bangladesh lacks PFAS laws, the study's results were compared to those of the EU, the Netherlands, and the US. “Bangladesh is a small country with a large population. The water bodies are major sources of irrigation, agriculture, industrial development and drinking water. We found that water is contaminated with highly toxic chemicals, and consider this a big problem that needs to be addressed. If Bangladesh is a signatory of the Stockholm Convention, it has an obligation to regulate PFAS,” Shahriar Hossain, a lead author of the study, said. (With inputs from agencies)

She stated that a foreign power offered her an easy path to re-election in the January 7 polls on the condition that she allowed the said foreign country to construct an airbase within Bangladeshi territory. Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina says, 'Offered re-election in return for airbase'

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently said that she was offered an easy path to re-election in the January 7 polls on the condition that she permitted a foreign country to construct an airbase within Bangladeshi territory.

The 76-year-old PM is ruling Bangladesh since 2009 and has secured a fifth term in the one-sided election in January 2024, which was boycotted by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

‘The Daily Star Bangladesh’ quoted Hasina as saying, "If I allowed a certain country to build an airbase in Bangladesh, then I would have had no problem.”

The PM, however, did not disclose the name of the country that had made the offer to her but emphasised that the "offer came from a White man”.

"The offer came from a White man," said Hasina and added, "It may look like that it is aimed at only one country, but it is not. I am quite sure where else they plan to go."

Hasina further stated that this is the reason why her Awami League party-led government is always in trouble.

When asked about her response to the "White man" who made the offer, the Prime Minister stated that she replied in the same manner as she did back in 2001 when the US proposed selling the country's gas to India.

"I've clearly said that I'm the daughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. . . we won our Liberation War, I don't want power by leasing out part of the country or handing it over to some other country," she said.

The 76-year-old further said she would only come to power if the people want her as the prime minister.

While talking about trade and commerce, she said that trade and commerce have been going on in the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean since ancient times.

"Many have their eyes on this place. There are no disputes or conflicts here, and I won't allow that to change.

"This is also considered one of my crimes," the premier said.

"Like East Timor, they will cut out a Christian country, taking parts of Bangladesh and Myanmar with a base in the Bay of Bengal,” said Hasina.

She further said that conspiracies were being hatched to bring down her government and that she might have to pay the same cost as her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman paid, The Daily Star reported.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated on August 15, 1975, along with most of his family members except for his two daughters, including Sheikh Hasina who was staying abroad at that time.

The Bangladesh leader also said they would not purchase anything from countries that imposed sanctions on it.

Bangladesh MP killed: Skin peeled, body chopped — grisly murder details emerge

On Thursday (May 23), USA stunned a full-strength Bangladesh side for the second successive time by winning the second and penultimate T20I, of the three-match series, in Houston. After winning the series opener, where USA chased down 154 without dropping much sweat, the hosts looked a lot more confident and defended a moderate 144/6 at the Prairie View Cricket Complex, Houston courtesy of Ali Khan's three-fer to help his side claim an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

The series win is a historic achievement for USA, who will be co-hosting the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup along with West Indies in June. The mega event kicks off on June 1 and USA, who will play the tournament-opener versus Canada, would be beaming in confidence after attaining their maiden T20I series win versus Bangladesh, their first against a Test-playing nation in T20 cricket.

Talking about the match, Bangladesh opted to bowl first. USA openers started off nicely with a 44-run opening stand. Throughout the innings, USA batters couldn't raise the tempo but also didn't lose wickets in clusters. Riding on captain-cum-wicketkeeper Monank Patel's 42 and Aaron Jones' 35 (34), the home team managed 144-6 on a sluggish surface.

In reply, the Bangla Tigers were expected to chase down the moderate score and level the series. Nonetheless, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (36) and Shakib Al Hasan (30) showed some resistance but couldn't carry on for long as Ali (3 for 25), Shadley van Schalkwyk (2 for 21) and Saurabh Netravalkar (2 for 15) dismissed Bangladesh for 138 in 19.3 overs.

Bangladesh captain Shanto said after the loss, "Very disappointing for us. We lost wickets in the middle overs, that was the reason why we lost. We didn't play well, but we have an opportunity to come up with a good plan in the next match. We should change our mindset, it's not about our skills."

This is a huge setback for Bangladesh right before the T20 WC. Their WC preparations have now gone for a toss with a shocking series loss versus a lowly-ranked USA. They will be desperate to avoid a series whitewash at the hands of USA in the third and final encounter, on May 25.
