Iran’s supreme leader Khamenei vows ‘tooth-breaking’ retaliation against Israel and US for recent attacks

Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei recently opened a Hebrew language account on social media platform X which was suspended after only two posts, as reported by the Jerusalem Post.

On the suspended account, one message was posted in Hebrew language which read, "In the name of God, the most merciful," which is a standard Islamic greeting.

The second post was related to a speech delivered by Khamenei on Sunday (Oct 27) and was posted on his English account as, “Zionists are making a miscalculation with respect to Iran. They don't know Iran. They still haven't been able to correctly understand the power, initiative, and determination of the Iranian people.”&nbsp;

In the message, reference was made to the attack by Israel on Iran on Sunday (Oct 27).

The two posts were shared on the account after the airstrikes by Israel on the military targets of Iran.

Khamenei is known to use Hebrew language while posting on his main X account and using strong language against Israel.

X took down the account, on which messages were posted in Hebrew, with a brief note saying that the account had been suspended for violating its rules. However, it did not specify the violation.

This is not the first time social media platforms have suspended or removed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's accounts.&nbsp;

The Supreme Leader's Facebook and Instagram accounts were removed in February after he extended support to the militant group Hamas after its October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

X suspends Iran Supreme Leader Khamenei's Hebrew account after two posts, says...

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday (Oct 27) said that the air attack by Israel on Iran was "precise and powerful" and it was able to achieve all its goals.

"We promised we would respond to the Iranian attack and on Saturday we struck... The attack in Iran was precise and powerful, achieving all of its objectives," said Netanyahu, in a speech to mark the Hebrew anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack.

The strikes were made by Israel in retaliation to the October 1 attack by Iran in which nearly 200 missiles were fired at Israel, although most of them were intercepted by the air defence&nbsp;systems of the country.

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Sunday (Oct 27) said that the attacks by Israel on Iran should not be "exaggerated nor downplayed". However, he added that the "miscalculations of the Israeli regime must be disrupted".

“The evil actions of the Israeli regime two nights ago should neither be exaggerated nor downplayed. The miscalculations of the Israeli regime must be disrupted. It is essential to make them understand the strength, will, and initiative of the Iranian nation and its youth," Khamenei said.

He added that Iran has a right to decide how it wants to respond to the aggression of Israel.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, as reported by the Associated Press, the attack by Israel on Iran caused damage to its facilities at a secretive military base which have been linked to the nuclear weapons programme of Tehran and also hit another base connected to its ballistic missile programme.

Iran has blamed Israel for the assassination and soon after the killing, the Supreme leader Khamenei issued an order to strike Israel.

Khamenei, in a public statement on July 31 — the day of the assassination — &nbsp;proclaimed "we see avenging his blood our duty," as the assassination&nbsp;happened on Iran's territory.

In his recent statement, Khamenei said, "Governments that yield to the demands of today's dominant powers, regardless of the size or strength of the nations they represent, could defy these pressures if they draw on the strength of their people and accurately assess their adversaries' true, unembellished capabilities," Khamenei said.

As per Iran International, he also criticised the longstanding habit of "exaggerating" enemy capabilities to instil fear as he pointed to what he described as US, British, and Israeli efforts since the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran.

The report further claimed that during a meeting convened on January 3, the commanders of the Revolutionary Guards expressed frustration with the ongoing protests and warned Khamenei about the repercussions the Islamic Republic might face in the future.

It is reported that the meeting was called to mark the third anniversary of the killing of Qassem Suleimani, the late commander of the IRGC’s expeditionary Quds Force.

"Based on our reports, it appears that IRGC forces are not in the same situation as last year, particularly with respect to their morale, as there has been a decline,” Abdullah Haji Sadeghi, Khamenei’s representative within the IRGC, told the meeting, according to IranWire.

“We have gathered information and statistics from various units across divisions, which reveal the existence of conflict [within the ranks]. This must be managed properly. It is important to note that we are not talking about just one or two individuals, but rather an armed force consisting of over 600,000 personnel,” he warned the Supreme Leader and his commanders.

This also comes ahead of the celebrations of Nowruz or Persian New Year in Iran which will be held next week. Additionally, the state media had also earlier hinted at the possibility of the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei pardoning protesters ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.&nbsp;

There has been a conflicting number regarding the number of people detained by the regime during the protests that began last September. However, the Iranian authorities had admitted that they arrested “tens of thousands” for participating in the countrywide demonstrations, earlier this year. On Monday, Ejehi said a total of 82,656 prisoners and those facing charges had been pardoned which included 22,628 who had been arrested during&nbsp;the demonstrations, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

The judicial chief also reportedly said that those pardoned had not committed theft or violent crimes. Notably, the figures released during Monday’s announcement are more than what some rights groups and media reports had estimated. Human Rights Activists in Iran, a group which has been tracking the regime’s crackdown on dissent, had previously said more than 19,700 people have been arrested during the protests, while at least 530 have been killed.&nbsp;

Iran pardons over 20,000 people who took part in anti-government protests

The Iranian government on Tuesday announced that few suspects have been arrested in the case of mystery poisonings of schoolgirls, which affected more than 5,000 students since late November.

On Monday, Iran's Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that the perpetrators of the "unforgivable crime" must be tracked down "without mercy" as public anger continues to mount.

In a statement, the interior ministry on Tuesday said that "a number of people", who are suspected of producing hazardous substances, have been arrested in six provinces, which includes a pupil's parent.

Iran's Deputy Interior Minister Majid Mirahmadi on Tuesday said that several arrests have been made by the "intelligence agencies", "and the relevant agencies are conducting a full investigation".

Since late November, cases of poisoning were reported from multiple Iranian schools with people suffering from vertigo, nausea and shortness of breath, after complaining about "unpleasant" odours on school premises. Some of the girls have received treatment in the hospital.

"Twenty-five (out of 31) provinces and approximately 230 schools have been affected, and more than 5,000 schoolgirls and boys poisoned," said Mohammad-Hassan Asafari, the parliamentary fact-finding committee's member on Monday.

"Various tests are being carried out to identify the type and cause of the poisonings. So far, no specific information has been obtained regarding the type of poison used,” he added.

The cases of mystery poisonings have led to a wave of anger and have increased demand for action from the government authorities.

According to a statement from the interior ministry, arrests were made in West Azerbaijan, Kermanshah, Khorasan, Khuzestan, Fars and Alborz provinces.

The statement added that three suspects have been found with criminal records "including involvement in the recent riots", by which the Iranian authorities referred to the protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in custody.

Amini, aged 22, was arrested by morality police over failure to follow the strict dress code for women and died in custody on September 16.

Iranian leader calls suspected poisoning of schoolgirls ‘unforgivable’, warns no amnesty for perpetrators

Supreme leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday appointed a new police chief, almost four months after the death of Mahsa Amini which triggered protests across the country.&nbsp;The country has been facing severe unrest since Iranian Kurdish woman Amini, aged 22, died in police custody on September 16 after she was arrested by the morality police for not following the strict Islamic dress code of the country.&nbsp;

Khamenei, who takes the final decision on issues of major state policies and holds the position of Iranian armed forces' commander-in-chief, appointed General Ahmad-Reza Radan who will replace Hossein Ashtari, read a statement issued by the official website of the leader.&nbsp;

The police department was ordered by Khamenei to "improve its capabilities" and "train specialised forces for various security sectors".&nbsp;

Born in 1963, Radan, initially held the position of deputy police chief from 2008 to 2014 and became the head of the police department's Centre for Strategic Studies.&nbsp;

Ashtari took his place as the deputy after he was made the commander of the force in 2015.&nbsp;

Both Ashtari and Radan started their military career in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.&nbsp;

Announcing the appointment of Radan in a statement, Khamenei expressed "gratitude and satisfaction" with the eight years of Ashtari's service.&nbsp;

The authorities in Iran call the ongoing protests across the country as "riots" and say that hundreds of people, which includes security forces' members, have lost their lives and thousands have been put behind bars.

In recent weeks, the state's response to the protests has been led by the Basij forces, which are a part of the nation's elite Revolutionary Guards.&nbsp;

In a televised speech, Khamenei said, "They have sacrificed their lives to protect people from rioters ... the presence of Basij shows that the Islamic Revolution is alive."&nbsp;

The clerical elite in Iran attributes&nbsp;the upheaval to the nation's foreign adversaries, primarily the United States and its agents.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is currently under observation after falling extremely ill last week. According to New York Times, Khamenei had to cancel all of his public appearances last week as he underwent a surgery after suffering from high fever and stomach pain.

A number of sources close to the developments told NYT that the surgery was performed under a lot of secrecy with the hospital premises being observed at all times. While Khamenei was not doing well last week, he has recovered since then and is currently being treated at his residence.

The last time that Khamenei was seen in public was two weeks ago when he went to the Imam Rez shrine in Mashhad. He was also supposed to meet some government officials, but it was cancelled.

This is a development of significance for India given the power shifts being anticipated in the prevailing world order. More so, as India finds positive mention in the interview in which Velayati spoke of Iran, China and Russia resisting the US and the West. Velayati’s interview was originally given to the Ayatollah’s website khamenei.ir.&nbsp;

Velayati’s wide-ranging interview is certain to interest sections of the Indian establishment that valued him as a friend in need who proved to be a friend indeed. In 1994, when India under Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao faced the threat of being disgraced with UN sanctions, on the basis of an OIC resolution in the UN Human Rights Commission, for rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir, it is Iran that came to the Government of India’s rescue. &nbsp;

Khamenei's comments come amid stalled talks with the US and its allies on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal and deteriorating relations with Israel.

Iran said it won't be subjected to "psychological pressure and unilateral expectations" in entering into the deal. Former US president Donald Trump had walked out of the deal in 2018 and imposed harsh economic sanctions against Iran.

Although talks have been continuing since April last year on reviving the deal but little progress has been made this year with deadlock on several issues.

Qatar has hosted indirect talks last month between the United States and Iran to get the Vienna process back on track, however, discussions broke down in a few days with no breakthrough achieved.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price asserted that Iran hasn't made the "political decision" to return to nuclear compliance. US President Joe Biden during his visit to Jerusalem earlier this month had said his administration won't wait indefinitely for Iran to respond to terms set by Washington to revive the nuclear deal.

An adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said that Iran possesses the technical ability to create a nuclear bomb. But the Islamic Republic has not yet made the decision whether to do so, Kamal Kharrazi said on Sunday (July 17), in a conversation with Al Jazeera news channel. He was speaking after Joe Biden’s four-day visit to Israel and Saudi Arabia came to a close, during which the US president promised to prevent Iran from ‘acquiring a nuclear weapon.’ Kharrazi said, “In a few days, we were able to enrich uranium up to 60 per cent and we can easily produce 90 per cent enriched uranium ... Iran has the technical means to produce a nuclear bomb but there has been no decision by Iran to build one."

In exchange for respite from economic sanctions, Iran had earlier agreed to limit its uranium enrichment activities, which lead to the development of nuclear weapons, under the terms of the 2015 nuclear agreement, which Donald Trump abandoned when he was US president, in 2018. Tehran began breaking these nuclear constraints of the agreement in response to Washington’s exit and its reimposition of severe sanctions.&nbsp;

Kharrazi asserted that Iran would never agree to concessions from the West and its Middle Eastern allies about its development of ballistic missiles and regional strategy, according to a report in Reuters.

After 11 months of indirect negotiations between Tehran and Biden’s administration in Vienna, the general framework of a resurrected deal was virtually agreed upon in March. Since the nuclear agreement is a political understanding and not a legally binding treaty, Biden is unable to make this commitment.&nbsp;

As per Kharrazi, the potential of any agreement is destroyed because the US has not given assurances about upholding the nuclear deal.
