Ancient pine trees in Australia have stood for thousands of years but they are extremely hard to find some eager scientists have finally found a way to locate them. Huan Pines are some of the oldest living organisms on the planet but there's a concern among some ecologists that climate change may endanger them.

Climate change endangers Australia's ancient Huon Pines

Anthony Albanese, the new Australian PM who came to power on majorly two pillars one his climate pledges and two support from the green party. Today in a clear shift in strategy his administration seems to be backtracking on climate pledges. The country has decided to reject a key proposal to stop emissions which was a temporary halt on new coal and gas projects.

Lockdown is perhaps a too familiar word now thanks to the Covid pandemic. People all over the world had to stay indoors when the world was going through the worst. But now, honey bees in southeast Australia had to go into a lockdown on Monday (June 27). The measure was taken as authorities raced to prevent spread of a parasite plague that is said to be potentially parasitic.

The Varroa Mite was detected at the Port of Newcastle, prompting authorities in New South Wales to throw up a strict biosecurity zone.

Australia is said to be the only major honey-producing country where the Varroa Mite is not endemic.

To stop spread of the mite, beekeepers inside 50 kilometre biodiversity zone will be forbidden from moving hives, bees, honey or comb till they get further notice.

The measure was aimed at "ensuring we eradicate the parasite" according to state Department of Primary Industries.

The tiny red-brown Varroa mites attack and feed on honey bees resulting in death of entire colonies. The mites do not cause major harm to honeybees that are not native to Australia.

The country's honey industry, however, relies primarily on non-native species.

"It is critically important that beekeepers in the Newcastle area do not move any hives or equipment in or out of the area," said the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council.

"Moving hives away will only further exacerbate the issue and make eradication efforts futile."

Aside from the honey industry, bees are essential in pollinating countless plants.

Amidst the rental affordability crisis in Australia, sleeping ‘space shuttle’ pods that have just single beds are being offered for rent for a record $900 a month in Melbourne.

The advertisement was put up by the Abbotsford house as the rental property in Melbourne and other places in Australia are seeing a record rise.

SQM Research has said that the cost of renting a house has soared by up to 21.2 per cent in Australia, with further rises expected as the national rental crisis deepens.

In the advertisement, the Abbotsford house, which is advertised privately, stated that it offers traditional rooms for $400 a week or $1500 a month, or the single pod capsules for up to $250 a week or $900 a month, reports The Guardian Australia.

“The boarding house and the capsules are fully licensed,” the advertisement, posted to Facebook reads.

“Each capsule pod fits a single bed (can sleep one person only), equipped with own mirror, ventilating fan, USB ports, digital control panels, adjustable colour reading lights, safe locker, clothes hanger & curtain door for privacy.

“They look like space shuttles.”

Landlord Frank Chan told the newspaper that rising inflation and a reduction in the number of short-term travellers had contributed to rising costs.

“I do not charge bond, no electricity charge, provide full furniture, full-time housekeeper, tenants have full flexibility when they want to leave, and my price is cheaper than 95% of comparable listings in booking.com, hotels.com and Airbnb the like,” he told Guardian Australia.

“I know there are many people who don’t understand much about the rental market and shout that my price is too high … but they really haven’t looked at how short-term accommodation functions.”

Chan said pods could be a “solution” to the tight rental market.

Tim Lawless, a research director at CoreLogic, told the newspaper that rents have risen 9.2 per cent over the past 12 months and 9.5 per cent for units.

“It’s the highest annual growth rate for rents on record,” he said. “The last time we saw it on this level was in 2017, but that was with a record level of migration. This time around, this level of rental growth is happening amidst closed borders.”

The results of Australia’s census have been declared. It is carried out once in five years. The results show the country has been undergoing significant change. In the survey, the population has grown from 2.1 million in 2016 to 25.5 million in 2021. The average income has also gone slightly higher. The country seems to be becoming less religious and more diverse. In it, the indigenous population is increasing, while the number of millennials is also significant. Although home ownership is stagnant, the number of caravans has been rising.

Now, only 44% Australians are Christians, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said. This has happened for the first time. The Christianity is still the biggest religion. Islam and Hinduism seem to be the fastest growing religions in the country.

After Australia and England, India has become the third-largest country of birth for the citizens of the country. The next ones are China and New Zealand.

The Muslim community living in Australia has accused Twitter of failing to take action against accounts that incite hatred on its platform.

Citing a manifesto of the extremist who killed 77 people in Norway in 2011, an advocacy group for the community has lodged a complaint against Twitter with the Queensland Human Rights Commission.

The group has claimed that as a publisher Twitter is responsible for content posted by a far-right account related to the incident in Norway.

Comments on the account include Islam as “the most violent and sexually perverse cult”, “Ramadan means killing infidels” and alleges that Qur’an should be referred to as the “terrorist handbook”.

In response to the community's requests, Twitter said the far-right account was assessed to be “consistent with their policies”.

''We were engaging with Twitter for over a year with really shocking examples. Pictures of Muslim men with guns being shoved into their mouths and pictures of Muslims depicted as monkeys and cavemen chasing people with knives,'' Rita Jabri Markwell, a lawyer for the network told 'The Guardian'.

“We want Twitter to take responsibility for their platform. It shouldn’t be left up to ordinary people to monitor their platform for them,” she added.

In a verdict last year, Australia’s high court found media companies could be liable for third-party comments on their social media posts in the landmark Dylan Voller case.

"India is an important International Space partner for Australia," said Mr Enrico Palermo, Head, Australian Space Agency(ASA), while virtually addressing a conference on 'Development of Space Start-up Ecosystem in India'(DeSSEI). Referring to the areas of Indo-Australia cooperation in the space sector, he mentioned India's Gaganyaan Human Spaceflight mission, the $25million (INR 144crore) expansion of the Indian International Space Investment initiative and assured that Australia continues to look at new ways to enhance space collaboration with India.

According to the Australian Government, the country's space economy is projected to triple in size by 2030, to $12bn(INR 65,200crore). With natural features such as clear skies, unique geography and advanced space capabilities, Australia offers international players comparative advantages in earth observation, communication technologies and services, access to space, robotics and automation, it was added.

Speaking at the event, Mr Michael Costa, Australia's Deputy Consul General to South India said that Australia welcomes Indian space start-up partnerships. He also highlighted the pathways for Indian space sector start-ups to access funding, tax incentives, incubation programmes and global networks in Australia. "The planned establishment of an Australian Consulate-general and a join Australia-India Centre of Excellence on Critical and Emerging Technology Policy in Bengaluru ais to further encourage technology linkages between Australia and India from cyberspace to outer space" he added.

Speaking of how there was an increasing appetite for Australian Space firms to set up a physical presence in India, Piyush Dhaundiyal, General Manager, Space Machines Company(SMC) said that his firm performed assembly, integration and testing of hardware in Sydney, while their core R&D, design and prototyping were being conducted in Bengaluru. Notably, Bengaluru is the aerospace hub of India.

Earlier, Mr Anthony Murfett, deputy head, Australian Space Agency(ASA), had said “The Australian government is proud to be supporting the Gaganyaan mission, by tracking through Australia’s territory on the Coco’s (Keeling) islands. It shows that Australia can be a trusted partner - we were a partner to NASA during the Apollo missions, we were a partner to Japan during Hayabusa 1&2 and now we’re working with India on Gaganyaan mission”.

ISRO has been working on the ambitious Gaganyaan mission that involves demonstrating the indigenous capability to undertake human space flight missions to low Earth orbit and will lay the foundation for a sustained Indian human space exploration programme in the long run. As part of this programme, two unmanned missions and one manned mission have been approved by the government of India.

Australia's space economy projected to triple by 2030, sees India as important international partner

NASA's first-ever launch from a commercial site outside of the United States blasted off from Australia's Outback late Sunday, in a "historic" moment for the country's space industry. In the first of three planned launches from the Arnhem Space Centre, the rocket, carrying technology likened to a "mini Hubble" telescope, lifted off -- blasted about 350 kilometres (218 miles) into the night sky.

Australia: Why is this rocket launch by NASA historical?

Now, NASA's launch from a commercial site outside of the United States blasted off from Australia's outback. The rocket launch is momentous as it is the first in Australia in more than 25 years.

NASA launches rocket from Australia to capture data on Alpha Centauri systems

In a historic moment for the United States’ space industry, NASA's first-ever launch from a commercial site outside of the United States blasted off from Australia's Outback late on Sunday, as reported by AFP. In the first of three planned launches from the Arnhem Space Centre, the rocket, carrying technology likened to a "mini Hubble" telescope, lifted off and blasted about 350 kilometres (218 miles) into the night sky.

Equatorial Launch Australia CEO Michael Jones told AFP ahead of the lift-off, "It is a momentous occasion for us as a company in particular, but it's historic for Australia."

Jones, whose company owns and operates the launch site in the far north of Australia, described it as a "coming out" party for the country's space industry and said the chance to work with NASA was a milestone for commercial space firms in the country.

After a series of rain and wind delays, the suborbital-sounding rocket soared into the sky to study x-rays emanating from the Alpha Centauri A and B systems. After reaching its apogee, the rocket's payload was to capture data on the star systems before parachuting back to earth.

According to NASA, the launch offers a unique glimpse of the distant systems and unlocked fresh possibilities for scientists.

"We're excited to be able to launch important science missions from the Southern Hemisphere and see targets that we can't from the United States," Nicky Fox, NASA's Heliophysics Division director in Washington, said on announcing the mission.

Jones said the unique location had made preparations hard, with years of work to get regulatory approval and the need to haul rockets on barges to the launch site -- about 28 hours drive from Darwin in northern Australia.

"I think for the team, it's gonna be, you know, a huge relief that it's done," he said.

It is the first NASA rocket to launch from Australia since 1995, and the project was hailed as the start of a "new era" for the country's space industry by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Historic: NASA’s first-ever commercial launch outside United States

Australia`s Mollie O`Callaghan stormed to victory to take the women`s 100 metres freestyle gold while Americans Lilly King and Ryan Murphy took gold in the women`s 200m breaststroke and the men`s 200m backstroke at the swimming world championships on Thursday.

Zac Stubblety-Cook of Australia followed up his Olympic gold in 200m breastroke with a repeat at the Duna Arena while the United States men won the 4x200m relay. O`Callaghan was third in the final 50 but raced into the lead in the last few metres to beat favourite and world record holder Sarah Sjoestroem of Sweden, who took the silver, while American Torri Huske was third.

The Australian clocked 52.67 seconds to take gold, 0.13 seconds ahead of Sjoestroem while Huske was just a quarter of a second behind. "I`m so excited, I really don`t know what to say. I wasn`t expecting that at all. I`m racing some amazing girls here," O`Callaghan said after winning her first individual gold at the world championships.

O`Callaghan had set the fastest time in the semi-finals to earn a spot in lane four and she was unfazed in the final stretch with Sjoestroem and Huske, the 100m butterfly champion, on either side. The field was blown wide open with defending champion and twice-Olympic gold medallist Simone Manuel not competing while O`Callaghan`s compatriot Shayna Jack withdrew from the championships after breaking her hand during a training session.

After missing the podium in the 100m breaststroke, King claimed her first world title in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:22.41. King led at the 50m mark yet fell back to fifth by the final turn but had saved enough for a powerful final length.

Australia`s Jenna Strauch took silver and American Kate Douglass won bronze. The absence of Olympic champion Evgeny Rylov of Russia left the field open for the men`s 200m backstroke and Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Murphy took full advantage.

Murphy had never won an individual gold at a world championships but had won in both 100m and 200m backstroke at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Stubblety-Cook was the clear favourite in the 200m breast, especially with his rival Arno Kamminga of the Netherlands pulling out in the semis.

But the 23-year-old was in the seventh spot at the 100 mark but it was soon clear that was part of his gameplan and he powered through the second half of the race to victory. The Queenslander finished in a time of 2:07.07, well short of his world record time but 1.31 ahead of Japan`s Yu Hanaguruma with Sweden`s Erik Persson taking bronze.

The American won the 4x200m freestyle relay with ease, finishing 3.26 ahead of Australia with Britain`s Tom Dean producing an impressive final leg to earn bronze.

Australia will push its mining industry to set up a register of sexual harassment perpetrators to help rein in abuse, a cabinet minister said, after a state government report detailed cases of "horrifying" and "appalling" behaviour against women.

The inquiry by mineral-rich Western Australia, home to the bulk of the country's iron ore industry, also criticised mining giants such as BHP and Rio Tinto for ignoring or overlooking unlawful and criminal behaviour.

The release of the report on Thursday followed a year-long investigation into concerns about a culture of sexism and bullying that fuelled public anger about workplace conditions last year, leading to what has been called Australia's MeToo moment..

Australia accounts for about half of the world's iron ore exports and women have long complained of sexual harassment in so-called "fly in, fly out" mining camps, temporary accommodation set up at remote mines to house workers.

"Any case of sexual harassment is one too many," said Resources Minister Madeleine King in a statement, which added that the federal government would work with Western Australia to support all 24 recommendations in the report.

"The Australian Government stands ready to help the resources sector stamp out sexual harassment, which has no place in the modern workplace," she added.

Examples cited in the report included stalking, texting of lewd material, requests for sexual favours in return for a permanent job and sexual assaults.

One woman told the inquiry how she was knocked unconscious in her accommodation hut and awoke to find her jeans and underpants around her ankles, leaving her feeling "sick, ashamed, violated, dirty and very confused".

Another told of a powerplay behaviour known as "shovelling" where iron ore would be dumped on the cab of trucks operated by women if they didn't comply with sexual requests, according to the report.

Individuals who spoke to the committee said perpetrators of serious harassment simply changed work sites or were employed with a different company, the report said.

Its 24 recommendations included having the industry consider an offender register or other options "which could operate effectively and fairly to prevent habitual sexual harassment offenders continuing to be re-employed."

It also recommended establishing a forum to document victims' historical experiences, and explore opportunities for redress, such as formal apologies and compensation. And it recommended changing laws to put the onus on companies to keep a harassment-free workplace, rather than on individuals to speak up.

Other proposals related to improved reporting of harassment, better training for workers and managers, improved accommodation and security at mine camps as well as restrictions on drinking.

CULTURE OF ABUSE

Major global miners including BHP, Rio Tinto and Fortescue made submissions to the inquiry, most of them acknowledging that sexual harassment is rife at mining camps in Western Australia, and promising reforms.

But bullying and abuse have continued in the sector over the past 18 months.

Rio said in a statement that it would closely study the recommendations contained in the report. BHP acknowledged the report and said it was committed to creating a workplace that is safe, respectful and inclusive at all times.

Fortescue Metals Group Chief Executive Elizabeth Gaines said: "We acknowledge that some inappropriate behaviour still occurs and in line with our zero-tolerance approach to harassment, bullying, discrimination and intimidation, we will continue to encourage our team members to call out inappropriate behaviour..."

Rio published its own report in February which found that nearly 30% of women had experienced sexual harassment at work, with 21 women reporting actual or attempted rape or sexual assault.

Western Australia's mining sector employs about 150,000 people and generated A$208 billion ($143 billion) in export revenue in 2020/21.

"The recommendations are good, they had a good handle on what was happening, and they didn't let the mining industry escape responsibility," said Kerin Collins, a former worker at a "fly in, fly out" camp for BHP who testified at the inquiry.

But Collins warned that an industry register of perpetrators could be open to abuse and could detract from putting responsibility on the companies.

"That would be really devastating if a person was put on that incorrectly," Collins said by phone. "It's the regulation, and failing to regulate, the industry that needs to be looked at."

'Appalling' abuse: Australia to push miners to set up register of offenders

Emphasising the importance attached by Canberra to New Delhi, visiting Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles has said that "India is central to Australia 's worldview”.

He further said that “there never has been a moment in our two countries' perspective history where we have been more strategically aligned ".

The visit of the Australian minister comes within a month after the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese-led government took charge. PM Modi and PM Albanese had met on the sidelines of the Quad summit in Tokyo recently.

Pointing out the "fantastic" discussions held in Delhi in the last two days, Marles said that the new government places "importance to India".

The minister began his India visit from Goa where he took a sortie over the Arabian Sea on the Indian Navy's P8i and later held talks with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Delhi.

Briefing a group of reporters, he said, "India and Australia share values. We are democracies, we have rule of law applicable within our countries, and we are seeking to build and respect a global rules-based order that is fundamentally important.” He added that both countries have "geographical linkage" via the Indian Ocean.

Worries over an aggressive China topped the agenda even as most questions at the briefing were on Beijing’s actions in the region.

Marles highlighted that while "China is our largest trading partner" it is also the "largest security anxiety and same for India", saying that both sides have been "comparing notes" on the issue.

He explained, "China is seeking to shape the world around it in a way we haven't seen before. In seeking to shape the world around it, we are experiencing more assertive Chinese behaviour. We talk a lot about the South China Sea...we have seen at LAC, what occurred...We stand in solidarity with India."

China has been aggressive against India at the Line of Actual Control. In 2020, the Chinese forces attacked Indian forces at Galwan valley in Eastern Ladakh that led to the death of 20 Indian troops.

China initially did not accept any causality, but later accepted that four of its soldiers died, a figure that is contested as the toll could be much higher.

The minister also lauded the role of the Indian diaspora saying that the Indian-Australian community "which is a fastest growing community" is changing the "face of Australia much for the better, bringing a sense of energy".

Bringing cricket in context, he said, "Indian-Australian community represents the best long-term prospects of continuing to win test matches against India.”

Victoria becomes the first Australian state to ban the public display of Nazi swastikas, or Hakenkreuz, by passing a law. Those who will intentionally display the symbol will be slapped with a fine of $15,000 or even face up to a year in jail.

It is understood that the move will address the growing concerns regarding the rate at which local young people are apparently being radicalised. The Swastika symbol is a hooked cross — to some extent similar to a sacred Hindu symbol, but it is entirely different.

The law in Victoria does not prohibit the display of swastikas in certain religious and cultural contexts as it is considered sacred among Buddhist, Hindu, Jain and some other faith communities.

The symbol is widely recognised for its appropriation by the Nazi Party and by neo-Nazis. The West associate the symbol with Nazism, white supremacism and antisemitism as a result of World War II and the Holocaust.

As quoted by news agency AP, Dvir Abramovich on Wednesday said that he expected Australia's most populous state, New South Wales, and the states of Queensland and Tasmania will soon pass similar laws. Abramovich is the chair of the Anti-Defamation Commission, which fights antisemitism.

"The fact that we've got a resurgent white supremacist and neo-Nazi movement is a cause for concern in every state," said Abramovich, who lives in the Victorian capital, Melbourne.

"What the bill does is to say to those forces of evil that are trying to break our spirit and instill fear that the law's no longer on their side," he added.

Sajida Tasneem: Australian woman killed with axe in Pakistan, father-in-law charged with murder

This will be the first time that six countries from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will be taking part in a FIFA World Cup as the 2022 edition kicks off in Qatar later this year. The usual Asian heavyweights – Saudi Arabia, Iran, Australia, South Korea and Japan – have all booked their spot in the tournament while hosts Qatar will be making their debut. The six teams will also take strength from the fact that the last time Asia hosted the tournament back in 2022, South Korea reached the semi-finals while Japan made it to the Round of 16. With a few months to go ahead of FIFA World Cup 2022, here’s a look at the six AFC teams which will be taking part in the competition -

Australia

The Socceroos had the longest road to the FIFA World Cup 2022 as they defeated Peru on penalties in the inter-confederation play off. The campaign started on a superb note as they topped their first-round group with absolute ease. However, two losses against Japan and another one against Saudi Arabia meant that they had to face United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the fourth-round play-off. It was a hard-fought encounter but Australia were able to clinch the win by a late goal from Ajdin Hrustic. With 7 goals, Jamie Maclaren was the top scorer for them in the qualification process and although substitute goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne was the star against Peru, Matt Ryan will play a major role in their campaign in Qatar. Things will get tougher for the Socceroos as they were placed in Group D where they will face dark horses Denmark, Tunisia and defending champions France.

Japan

Japan finished their first-round qualifying journey with 46 goals from just eight matches and in the second round, it was once again their attackers who guaranteed their seven consecutive FIFA World Cup appearance. The Blue Samurais did slump to defeats against Oman and Saudi Arabia but with the duo of Takumi Minamino and Yuya Osako scoring 10 goals each over the two rounds, it was easy sailing for Hajime Moriyasu’s side. In Qatar, they will be placed in the so-called ‘Group of Death’ along with the two European heavyweights – Germany and Spain – along with Costa Rica.

Iran

Under the management of Dragan Skocic, Iran has the most impressive team in the AFC qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 2022. With most goals scored and the most points for any nation, Iran cruised past their opponents with their only loss coming against South Korea. Bayer Leverkusen striker Sardar Azmoun finished the campaign with 10 goals while his strike partner Mehdi Taremi provided able support. This will be Iran’s sixth appearance in the World Cup and with England, Wales and the United States in their group, it will be a tough job for them to reach the playoffs.

South Korea

Son Heung-min and Co had a relatively easy journey to the FIFA World Cup 2022 with five wins out of the six games in the first round and just loss in the second round. The Tottenham superstar led his team by example as he was the top-scorer with six goals but it will be tough for them to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2022 Round of 16 from a group featuring Portugal, Uruguay and Ghana.

Saudi Arabia

Another team which cruised through the qualifying process with just one loss in two rounds. Salem Al-Dawsari and Saleh Al-Shehri top-scored with seven goals and with Argentina, Mexico and Poland in their FIFA World Cup 2022 group, there is an outside chance for the Asian giants to reach the next stage. This will be the sixth appearance for the top Asian side in the FIFA World Cup.

Qatar

This will be the debut appearance for Qatar in the FIFA World Cup as they will be hosting the footballing extravaganza. Qatar took part in the qualification Round 1 in order to secure their place in the Asian Cup 2023 and ended up toping their group with seven victories and one draw. Over the last couple of years, they have taken part in invitational competitions, but it will be a tough road for them in the World Cup as they are placed in Group A along with Ecuador, Senegal and Netherlands.

Iran Under the management of Dragan Skocic, Iran has the most impressive team in the AFC qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 2022. South Korea Son Heung-min and Co had a relatively easy journey to the FIFA World Cup 2022 with five wins out of the six games in the first round and just loss in the second round. The Tottenham superstar led his team by example as he was the top-scorer with six goals but it will be tough for them to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2022 Round of 16 from a group featuring Portugal, Uruguay and Ghana. Qatar This will be the debut appearance for Qatar in the FIFA World Cup as they will be hosting the footballing extravaganza. Qatar took part in the qualification Round 1 in order to secure their place in the Asian Cup 2023 and ended up toping their group with seven victories and one draw. Australia's newly elected government has increased the 2030 target for cutting carbon emissions. This step brings the country more in line with the climate commitments of other economies that are part of the Paris climate accord. Australia has now said that it would cut carbon emissions by 43 from the 2005 levels by 2030

Australia's energy minister urged millions of residents of New South Wales to switch off their lights and conserve power in order to avoid blackouts. The request came a day after Australia suspended its spot electricity market due to unscheduled outages at ageing coal-fired utilities. In Australia, several coal-fired units have gone offline due to scheduled maintenance and unexpected faults.

Chris Bowen, who is the Climate Change and Energy Minister urged households to save power without sacrificing essentials such as heating. He also said that the efforts are focused on restoring units to normal operations. During a televised media conference in Canberra, he said, "We are confident we can avoid blackouts. If you have a choice about when to run certain items, don't run them from 6 to 8 (pm)."

Matt Kean, who is NSW Treasurer and Energy Minister also asked Sydney residents to reduce their energy usage from 5.30pm to 8.30pm (local time).

As quoted by news.com.au, Kean said on Wednesday, "A number of the generators that we rely on to produce our electricity haven’t come online in the way we expect them to."

"We're not telling people to turn off their heating … we're just saying maybe if you’re washing the dishwasher at 7.30pm, to delay it until 8.30pm. What we’re doing is focused on making sure that we get through tonight and the next couple of days," he added.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said energy will be on the agenda at a dinner with state leaders on Thursday and a meeting Friday.

Meanwhile, several social media users have pointed out the expansive light show that was apparently still operating despite fears of blackouts and power outages.

Amid crisis, Sydney residents told to cut power use to help avoid blackouts

Australia's new centre-left government submitted more ambitious emissions targets to the United Nations Thursday, seeking to end a decade of footdragging on climate change.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese raised the country's 2030 emissions reduction target to 43 percent, up from a more modest previous target of 26-28 percent.

The new goal "sets Australia up for a prosperous future, a future powered by cleaner, cheaper energy," Albanese said.

Despite being ravaged by floods, fires and droughts, Australia has long been seen as a laggard on climate action.

The vast continent-country is replete with fossil fuel deposits and is one of the world's top exporters of coal and gas.

Coal still plays a key role in domestic electricity production.

But Albanese made emissions cuts a centrepiece of his recent election campaign and pledged to "end the climate wars" that led to decades of policy stasis.

Albanese sought to frame the decision as an economic boon: "What business has been crying out for is investment certainty," he said.

The Business Council of Australia welcomed the raised targets, saying they "should be a line in the sand."

"Australia can't afford to stall progress again because failure will see Australians miss out on new opportunities, new industries and better jobs," the council's chief executive Jennifer Westacott said.

Albanese said Thursday that world leaders had "all welcomed Australia's changed position" on climate action during his conversations with them since taking power last month.

The issue of emissions reduction and fossil fuel exports was a key point of tension between Australia's previous government and Pacific leaders, who have labelled climate change the greatest threat to their region.

Albanese tried to sidestep criticism that higher targets could harm Australian jobs saying he wanted to "seize the opportunity that is there from acting on climate change".

The new targets would give business the certainty it needed to "invest over a longer time frame than the political cycle of three years," he said.

But he has so far refused to set a deadline for phasing out coal, in line with other rich countries.

Even before the announcement, Australia's fossil fuel industry was in flux with many major companies seeking to decarbonise their operations.

Australia submits more ambitious 2030 emissions target to United Nations

What would you do if a thief tried to steal your car? Try to stop them by any means and call the police, right? Well, a man did just the same but in a unique way. The man in Australia used a forklift to lift the car in the air to stop the thief. The incident happened in Logan, west of Brisbane. According to the police, a woman broke into a man's home. After taking a shower and changing clothes, she tried to steal the car. When she was about to leave, the man, Brendan Mills, came home along with the family. "It all unfolded in front of us so fast," Mills told a local breakfast show, Sunrise.

When he reached, he saw the car door getting shut and the vehicle was beginning to start. "I asked her many times to get out of the car: 'We're home, you're busted. Get out the car, you know it's over'. (But) they didn't want to get out. I said 'Well ok, you want to play it that way, I've got an alternative option here'," he said.

As the man works with cars, he had a forklift handy. Mills used it to stop the theft. This was the only way he could think of at that time. "My family were standing by watching the whole thing unfold, so you can't do anything too silly. You had this immense amount of adrenaline running through the system, lots of thoughts cross your mind... I just went, 'Well, there's a forklift sitting there - why not?'," he said.

In some time, the cops also arrived to find the car suspended in the air. Later, it was slowly lowered to let the woman get arrested. She has been charged and will face court next month.

Fans were concerned about Tom Hanks's health when he appeared to be struggling to control his shaking arm earlier this month. The 65-year-old actor is currently promoting Baz Luhrmann's upcoming biopic 'Elvis' based on the greatest Hollywood star, Elvis Presley. Hanks plays the singer's manager in the film.

Luhrmann, who was born in Sydney, organised a premiere at Australia's Gold Coast, which is 50 miles south of Brisbane and where the filming took place.

Along with Hanks, Austin Butler, 30, who is playing the lead character of Elvis Presley, also attended the ceremony on June 4.

"There is no better place in the world to make a motion picture than right here on the Gold Coast". He remarked, his right hand holding the microphone and his left hand in his pocket.

Further, the actor said he has shot films in Morocco, Los Angeles, New York City, Seattle, and Berlin, among other places, but none of the places is as happening as the Gold Coast. "None of them have what the Gold Coast have, and what is that? Two words. None of those other cities have Dan Murphy," he noted.

With Dan Murphy's, the actor referred to the booze shop chain there.

"What a man," he added to cheers, "who I got to know quite well."

Hanks attempted to control his shaking right hand by placing his left hand at the bottom of the microphone, underneath his right. He even briefly switched hands.

"He does seem like he has aged all of a sudden-lost weight," commented another user, while another Hank’s fan said, "Unfortunately his declining health points to possibly Parkinson's." "He's diabetic. This happens to my mom when she gets low blood sugar," wrote another.

An 18-year-old from Australia has been charged after police seized a fully functioning firearm he allegedly made at home with a 3D printer. Police said the homemade weapon was discovered by Drug and Firearm Squad detectives inside a home in Bayswater, in Perth's northeast, on June 3.

"This firearm although it resembles a toy has the ability to cause serious harm within our community," Detective Senior Sgt. Blair Smith told reporters. "It's deeply concerning that this man was able to manufacture this firearm at home with a 3D printer and readily available materials."

The 3D-printed weapon is capable of firing 15 rounds with one pull of the trigger. The teen has been charged with a series of firearm offences including the unlicensed manufacture of firearms or ammunition and possession of a prohibited weapon.

In Australia, civilians are banned from possessing fully automatic weapons, and all other gun ownership is heavily regulated and restricted to people over 18 with a valid license.

The laws were introduced in 1996 after a gunman opened fire on tourists at Port Arthur, a former colonial prison in Tasmania, killing 35 people.

Sergeant Smith described the discovery of the assault rifle as 'deeply concerning' and said it held no place in the community. 'Although it resembles a toy it has the ability to cause serious harm within our community,' he told reporters during a press conference on Monday.

It is estimated that it can take just 48 hours to manufacture a gun with materials costing as little as $40, while a 3D printer can cost $6,000.

The teen is due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court on June 22.
