Chris Dawson, who is a part of one of Australia's longest-running cold cases, has been convicted for the murder of his wife Lynette, CNN reported. The case was documented in the popular "Teacher's Pet" podcast, where new claims led to the 74-year-old's arrest in 2018 as police re-examined evidence.

The podcast claimed that Dawson, then a high school teacher, was having an affair with a 16-year-old student when his wife vanished in January 1982. He maintained that he had nothing to do with her disappearance, and that she walked out on him and his two kids. He reported her missing in February 1982. Dawson had also pleaded not guilty to one charge of murder.

Now, Justice Ian Harrison took into account circumstantial evidence and discounted reports of Lynette being seen in the subsequent years. Even though there was no direct evidence, Harrison said that circumstantial evidence pointed to Dawson being guilty.

"The whole of the circumstantial evidence satisfies me that Lynette Dawson is dead, that she died on or about 8 January 1982, and that she did not voluntarily abandon her home," Harrison said.

"Her death was a result of a conscious and voluntary act committed by Mr Dawson with the intention of causing her death," he added.

Dawson had even claimed to talking to his wife in the weeks after her disappearance. However, the judge said it makes no sense that a woman who was "supposedly desperate to leave her marriage" would call and give updates about herself.

"I'm satisfied beyond unreasonable doubt that Mr Dawson's reported telephone conversations with Lynette Dawson after January 1982 are lies," Harrison said.

He further said that despite the case getting huge publicity, with several TV programmes and the "Teacher's Pet" podcast talking about it, no one ever came forward with any information on Lynette.

More than 5 million doses of fentanyl that were being circulated illegally on the streets of the country have been seized by the Australian Border Force (ABF).

Hidden inside an industrial wooden lathe, the opioids were found in a shipment arriving from Canada in Melbourne in December 2021.

Nearly 60 kilograms of illegal substances were discovered by Australian police officers during an examination of the shipping container two months later.

With an estimated street value of 27 million Australian dollars (roughly €18.5 million, or US$18.5 million), the substances were equivalent to about 5.5 million potential lethal doses of 30 milligrams.

Former Australian PM Scott Morrison refuses to resign from federal parliament

Olympic sprinter Kimia Yousofi has arrived in Australia to start afresh just over a year after carrying the Afghan flag into the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Games, competing in the 100-meters, and then having to watch from afar as the Taliban regained control of her country.

The Australian Olympic Committee on Wednesday said Yousofi and Asian Games taekwondo medalist Ahmad Abasy, an activist for women's sports inclusion, were among the members of five Afghan families with ties to the Olympic movement to have recently arrived in Australia. "It's been a journey for me but I am very happy to be here, Yousofi said in a statement. I am essentially starting a new life here.

Yousofi, who arrived with her mother and one of her three brothers, is aiming to compete in the 2024 Olympics in Paris, whether it be for Afghanistan or for the International Olympic Committee's Refugee Team.
Yousofi was living in Iran when she gained selection for the Afghan team to compete at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where she carried the flag in the opening ceremony. She had the same honor in Tokyo last year and is hoping, despite another relocation, to get another chance. "I am going to be training very hard and it would be exciting to go to Paris, she said. I am definitely going to be competing.

She also thanked the people who helped her family resettle and said she's still seeking visas for two of her brothers. The group with Olympic links joins more than 100 other Afghan athletes, including women's soccer players and cricketers, who resettled in Australia last year after the Taliban took control amid the U.S. Military's withdrawal from Kabul after 20 years of war.

The Taliban on Monday marked a year since they seized the Afghan capital. The former insurgents struggle to govern and remain internationally isolated, while the economic downturn has driven millions more Afghans into poverty. The Taliban-led government also has imposed restrictions on access to education and jobs for girls and women, despite initial promises to the contrary. Teenage girls are barred from school and women are required to cover themselves head-to-toe in public, with only the eyes showing.

Abasy, who has competed internationally and coached in Taekwondo, said the girls and women of his country were being denied the right to sports. "This is a great loss for the sport of Afghanistan and the world," Abasy said. "Afghan girls have good talent in sports and have made significant achievements that should not be ignored.

"Afghan girls should actively participate in international competitions, and we will witness one of the Afghan girls winning a ... Medal. I will fight for their rights." Australia's Olympic committee worked with the Department of Home Affairs to secure visas and flights for the Afghan families and with sponsors for their financial support and help with accommodation and employment.

"For the families involved, the stress and uncertainty over this time has been enormous, AOC chief executive Matt Carroll said in the statement. These brave people have endured significant hardship. It's a proud moment for the Olympic movement in Australia that we have them here, safe and settling well.

Germany is sending 13 military aircraft to joint exercises in Australia, the air force's largest peacetime deployment, underlining Berlin's increased focus on the Indo-Pacific amid rising tensions with China in the region.

Last year, a German warship sailed into the South China Sea for the first time in almost 20 years, a move that saw Berlin joining other Western nations in expanding its military presence in the region amid growing alarm over Beijing's territorial ambitions.

Tensions have also risen over Taiwan since China - which claims Taiwan as its own territory - kicked off military drills around the democratically governed island after US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei at the start of August.

On Monday, six Eurofighter jets took off from a base in Neuburg an der Donau in southern Germany and three A330 tankers from Cologne for the three-day flight to Australia where they will, together with four German A400M transporters that have already left, join 16 other nations in the biennial exercise Pitch Black.

During the deployment, which includes detours to Japan and South Korea, the pilots will conduct almost 200 mid-air refuellings of the fighter jets, German air force chief Ingo Gerhartz told reporters ahead of the mission.

Asked whether the war planes will pass the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, two flashpoints of tensions with China in the region, Gerhartz said the aircraft would use civilian air traffic routes and that no passage of the Taiwan Strait was planned.

"The South China Sea, Taiwan - these are obviously the sticking points in the region," he told reporters. "We will fly at an altitude of more than 10 km and barely touch the South China Sea, and we will move on international routes."

Gerhartz said that, with the deployment, he was rather aiming to send a signal to Germany's partners than China: "I don't think we are sending any threatening message towards China by flying to an exercise in Australia."

The general was echoed by Australia's ambassador to Germany, Philip Green, who stressed there was no reason why Beijing should see a regular exercise as destabilising to the region.

"We are seeking a region which will be stable, peaceful and prosperous, strategic equilibrium where each country can take their own sovereign choices," Green said when asked about the message for China.

After it was revealed that Scott Morrison secretly held key ministerial roles during the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese accused his predecessor of "tin-pot activity".

Promising a rapid investigation, Albanese described Morrison's actions as "extraordinary and unprecedented".

While addressing a press conference, Albanese said "This is a sort of tin-pot activity that we would ridicule if it was in a non-democratic country. Scott Morrison was running a shadow government."

Ending nearly a decade of centre-right rule in the country Morrison's conservative coalition lost power in the May elections.

The Australian newspaper reported that Morrison was appointed health minister along with Greg Hunt to avoid concentrating power in one person when biosecurity emergency powers were adopted to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.

Saying it undermined the tradition of Westminster parliamentary democracy, former Liberal Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull condemned the secrecy around the extra ministerial roles.

Following a landmark assessment, the high suicide rate among members of the current and previous Australian Defence Force has been referred to as "a national tragedy."

Over the course of eight months, a royal commission—Australia's highest level of public inquiry—interviewed hundreds of people.

The commission's preliminary report, which was delivered to the government on Thursday, lays bare the government's failure to appropriately address the plague of lives lost among Australian Defense Force troops.

The 348-page initial findings of the royal inquiry warn that institutional and cultural flaws continue to obstruct efforts to serve veterans.

What did the report from the war veterans reveal?

The royal commission has found individual accounts, like Daniel's, that detail the experiences and viewpoints of veterans, as well as those of their families, friends, and support systems.

The military force's ethos, according to the research, discourages serving soldiers from seeking help because they believe doing so could harm their careers.

Matt Keogh, minister of veterans affairs, said there was a definite need for action.

"The rate of veteran suicide in Australia is a national tragedy and it is a rate that is significantly higher than across the general Australian population," he told reporters.

"It is devastating that Australia has lost more serving and former serving personnel to suicide than it has lost through operations over the last 20 years in Afghanistan and Iraq."

After a royal commission investigation exposed the failures to address the suicide rate, the minister of veterans' affairs issued an apology to veterans and active Australian Defense Force soldiers.

The Australian central bank on Tuesday (August 9) announced that it will now begin year-long research into the merits of a central bank digital currency (CBDC), with a particular emphasis on the potential advantages it will have for the Australian economy. This programme is a partnership between the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) and the Digital Finance Cooperative Research Centre (DFCRC). In order to understand the technological, legal, and regulatory issues surrounding the issuing of a CBDC, the project will aim to find novel use cases and business models that can be supported by it, Reuters reported.

This will entail the creation of a pilot CBDC on a small scale that will operate in a ring-fenced setting and feature a digital currency claim on the reserve bank.

According to Mark Humphery-Jenner, an associate professor of finance, a CBDC typically proposes a number of advantages, like faster transactions, ease of government stimulus and money control, and smoother international transactions.

Development of particular use cases that illustrate how a CBDC can be utilised to offer cutting-edge and value-added payment and settlement services to consumers and enterprises will be requested from interested industry partners.

According to DFCRC CEO Andreas Furche, the technology for a digital currency already exists; the project is instead focused on figuring out how a CBDC may benefit the country.

Australian website news.com.au has reported that the claims made by New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet about offering a lucrative overseas job to Transport Minister David Elliott have been denied by the latter.

Conceding that they discussed options for a parliamentary secretary trade role in “private discussions”, Elliott told the website that the remaining allegations are “untrue and offensive”.

Citing government sources, the website had previously reported that Perrottet discussed the option of a parliamentary secretary role for Elliott if he left politics.

Prompting a race between Transport Minister David Elliott and Treasurer Matt Kean for the deputy’s job, the Barilaro saga has triggered the resignation of deputy Liberal leader Stuart Ayres.

According to Perrottet, ''A number of those jobs did not exist because I create parliamentary secretary roles every reshuffle we have. They are private conversations and very normal conversations for a premier to have.''

Announcing that he will scrap the Trade Commissioner roles if he wins the next state election, NSW Opposition Leader Chris Minns said they were created two years ago and the salary paid is over $400,000 a year.

Australian airline Qantas has asked senior executives to work as baggage handlers for three months as it tries to tackle an acute labour shortage.

The airline's operations manager is searching for at least 100 volunteers to work at the airports in Sydney and Melbourne.

Other than operating cars to transport luggage throughout airports, tasks include loading and unloading bags.

As borders reopen, Qantas is battling to restore its services, much like the majority of the global airline business.

According to Qantas' chief operating officer Colin Hughes, "The high rates of winter flu and a Covid increase across the population, coupled with the current tight labour market, make resourcing a challenge across our business."

"There is no requirement that you accept this position in addition to your full-time job," Mr. Hughes continued.

The managers and executives were required to work three or five days per week in shifts that lasted either four or six hours each.

Applicants must be able to move baggage weighing up to 32 kgs each, the notice continued.

According to a Qantas representative who talked to the BBC, "We've been clear that our operational performance has not been reaching our customers' expectations or the standards that we demand of ourselves - and that we've been pulling out all the stops to enhance our performance."

Since Easter, 200 head office employees have volunteered at airports during peak travel times, as we have done in the past at busy times.

As nations closed their borders and grounded planes due to the epidemic, Qantas was one of the airlines that suffered greatly.

During the epidemic, the industry fired thousands of employees, many of them were ground employees.

Qantas and other significant airlines have struggled to restore operations at the level seen prior to the epidemic as efforts to slow the spread of Covid-19 have waned globally.

According to a survey, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has recovered from storms and bleaching events to record levels. As per officials, though this is great news, the new coral is extremely vulnerable and can quickly tarnish by climate change and other environmental threats. The northern and central parts of the reef have the highest amount of coral cover. This stands true since coral monitoring began, roughly 36 years ago. However, the southern part of the coral cover reef has decreased. The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) scans the reef to check its health each year. They do so by using divers slowly towed by a boat, as well as aerial surveys. The fourth mass bleaching was confirmed in March and since then, AIMS had grave concerns, especially ahead of this year's study. The chief executive of AIMS, Paul Hardisty said, "In our 36 years of monitoring the condition of the Great Barrier Reef, we have not seen bleaching events so close together”. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is recovering from bleaching events but still 'very vulnerable': Survey

A long, arduous four-year legal battle has come to an end for the Nadesalingam family in Australia. Reportedly, the family has been granted permanent residency, ending a community-wide campaign that protested against their deportation. Andrew Giles, the federal immigration minister became their guardian angel by intervening and ensuring that the family received their visas.

"This government made a commitment before the election that, if elected, we would allow the family to return to Biloela and resolve the family's immigration status," said Giles.

Meanwhile, Priya Nadaraja, elated at the decision remarked, "Now I know my daughters will get to grow up safely in Australia. Now my husband and I can live without fear."

The Genesis

Priya Nadaraja, Nades Murugappan and their daughters Kopika and Tharnicaa had been living in an immigration detention centre after Priya's visa expired, back in 2018. The couple's request for being included in the mainstream with the 'refugee' status was turned down by the government, repeatedly.

It is pertinent to note that Priya and her husband arrived in the down under country after fleeing Sri Lanka on refugee boats. This was nearly a decade ago. The couple soon met each other, got married and had two kids.

But soon trouble came their way as the Australian government detained them, citing they did not have any legal rights to stay in Australia. First transferred to an immigration detention centre in Melbourne, the family was later shifted to a detention centre on Christmas Island, where they spent the majority of the last two years, fighting courtroom immigration battles.

However, after the government changed and labour Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his administration came to power, good news came for the Nadesalingam family.

In June, the family was granted a bridging visa and allowed in Biloela, a town in Queensland, from where they were detained four years back by the border force agents in a 5 AM raid.

Illegal immigrants will be turned away: Andrew Giles

The Nadesalingam family has now become the face of fighting Australia's tough asylum-seeking policies. However, Giles made it clear it might have been a one-off case as those entering Australia illegally through unauthorised vessels will be turned away.

"For anyone who attempts to migrate via an unauthorised boat to Australia – you will be caught, returned or sent to a regional processing country. "This has not changed since the last government. We are not considering changing this policy." said Giles.

Australian Border Force (ABF) Commander Claire Rees from Maritime Border Command (MBC) is on a visit to India and Maldives. During the ongoing visit, the official visited the Heads of Asian Coast Guard Agencies Meeting (HACGAM) and had meetings with the Maldivian Coast Guard and other agencies.

“At HACGAM, Australia engaged with all major coast guard agencies in the Asian region to reinforce longstanding relationships and cooperation on civil maritime security matters,” Commander Rees said.

The Australian government also emphasized that the change in their country's leadership had not changed its counter-human-trafficking policies.

It was specified that Australian authorities will intercept any maritime individual smuggling vessel, seeking to reach the country, and safely return those on board to their point of departure or country of origin, or if required, transfer them to a regional processing country.

Given the ongoing economic crisis in Sri Lanka and the illegal attempts to flee the country via sea, it was mentioned that Australia is working in lockstep with the island nation. Recently, the Sri Lankan Navy has tirelessly disrupted maritime people smuggling ventures while Australia has safely returned 137 people from five irregular maritime ventures, attempting to reach Australian shores.

“Australia is committed to working closely with all partners in the region to combat maritime crime, especially the scourge of people smuggling, to prevent vulnerable people from being exploited by people smugglers who have no regard for their welfare.” Commander Rees said.

We share a commitment with all of our key partners in this region to achieve our shared strategic interests, including combatting all forms of maritime crime and forging strong people-to-people links, it was added.

Eggs have become the newest food item to experience supply chain problems in Australia. Morning fry-ups may no longer be a breakfast option for people. Woolworths, a supermarket chain representative, said that decreased output on certain farms had an impact on the availability of locally produced eggs in several areas. The supermarket warned that as a result, customers might face availability problems. The firm is currently trying to boost its availability. Similarly, Coles had a two-carton limit on eggs per customer, but Woolworths didn’t have any restrictions.

A legislation was passed in 2018, which stated that egg-producing chickens should have access to the outdoors for at least eight hours a day, The Guardian reported.

The Victorian director of Egg Farmers of Australia, Brian Ahmed, claims that the sector produces enough eggs to satisfy the needs of Australians. Contradicting the legislation, Ahmed said that this implies that during winters, they would face difficulty in producing eggs. However, he believes that recovery is possible if there were better weather conditions.

Ian Onley, a biodynamic egg farmer in Gippsland, claims to have noticed a 20 per cent decrease in winter egg output in his pastured system.

McMonnies, managing director of Australian Eggs, said that there were a lot of factors affecting the shortage. According to him, there are many variables in free-range farming, including weather, but said that although the farmers have always been delivering throughout the year Covid’s disruption made things challenging. He further added that the reopening of cafes and restaurants after the lockdown decreased the demand for eggs instantly. However, the country was able to cope with it more quickly than was anticipated.
