Top Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel pleaded guilty Monday to common assault after being arrested over an altercation with two teenage girls at a Sydney hotel, a court official said. The 27-year-old was detained on the eve of Sunday's elite road race at the world championships in Wollongong, where he was among the favourites.

Van der Poel, who has won a stage on the Tour de France, was due in Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday but pleaded guilty on Monday and was fined Aus$1,500 (US$1,000), according to a court statement provided by an official. He is reportedly on his way home to the Netherlands, with his lawyer Michael Rowe saying his passport had been returned and he was free to depart Australia. "I'm sure he's keen to leave the country after this," he added.

Police alleged that the cyclist had an altercation with two girls aged 13 and 14 on Saturday evening and pushed them "with one falling to the ground and the other being pushed into a wall causing a minor graze to her elbow". Van der Poel was charged with two counts of common assault. The court statement said he was fined Aus$1,000 for one charge and Aus$500 for the other. "It's a sad result because I think obviously he was very frustrated with teenagers knocking on his door causing him to not be able to get to sleep," Rowe told Dutch broadcaster NOS outside the court.

"He's gone out to speak to them, they've knocked on his door a number of times... it was very plausible how it all happened and it's very disappointing that he's been convicted of this offence." Rowe said he planned to appeal with Van der Poel having "a great reputation".

"He's flown all the way to Australia, it's a massive event, only those who understand cycling realise how big this event is," he added. "He felt like he let his country down, he felt like he let his team down. It's a long way to come to have circumstances like this. He'll learn by the experience."

Van der Poel started the 266.9 kilometre (165.4 mile) race around the coastal city of Wollongong, south of Sydney, but retired in the early stages. Christoph Roodhooft, a director of his Team Alpecin-Deceuninck, said Van der Poel was shattered by the experience. "He didn't sleep all night and was mentally a bit broken as well," he told reporters on Sunday. "He was expecting a lot of this day (race) and did all he could in the last two months after his bad Tour de France. He had found joy and happiness again in cycling and was hoping to have a nice race."

In his absence, Belgium ace Remco Evenepoel stormed to victory with a spectacular solo ride, finishing 2min 21sec ahead of Frenchman Christophe Laporte after the 6hrs 16min endurance test to claim the rainbow jersey. Van der Poel has enjoyed a strong season with wins at Dwars Door Vlaanderen and the Tour of Flanders, third at Milan-San Remo, fourth at Amstel Gold Race and ninth at Paris-Roubaix.

After a hacking into Australia's second-biggest telecom company on Monday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the country will modify its privacy laws to allow banks to respond more quickly to such attacks.

Albanese described the attack as a "massive breach" and a "huge wake-up call" for the corporate sector, adding that some organisations seek access to people's information.

Optus, owned by Singapore Telecommunications Ltd., had one of the largest data breaches in the history of Australia, with databases containing home addresses, license numbers, and passport numbers of nearly 40 per cent of the population. The firm stated that the attacker's IP address appeared to switch between countries in Europe.

In conversation with radio station 4BC, Albanese said, "We want to make sure ... that we change some of the privacy provisions there so that if people are caught up like this, the banks can be let know so that they can protect their customers as well," Reuters reported.

As per Australian media, the federal government is preparing reforms that will mandate businesses to notify banks in the event that customer data is compromised so that lenders can subsequently check for any suspicious activities.

Nearly 200 whales have died after becoming stranded on a beach on Tasmania's west coast. As per rescuers, some 35 whales are alive and warned of difficult rescue efforts.

Nearly 200 whales have died after becoming stranded on a beach on Tasmania's west coast. As per rescuers, some 35 whales are alive and warned of difficult rescue efforts. Brendon Clark, the operating manager said, "We have got about 35 surviving animals out on the beach and the primary focus this morning will be on the rescue and release of these animals," AFP reported. According to the department of natural resources, the whales were stuck near the harbour entrance, more popularly known as Hells gates. "A pod of approximately 230 whales is stranded near Macquarie Harbour. It appears about half of the animals are alive," the department earlier said in a statement. Read more: Sperm whales found dead en masse on Australian island It further said that Environment Tasmania Marine Conservation Programme (MCP) was working on assembling the whale rescue gear and heading to the location which is far from the mainland. Remarking that whales are a protected species, the department added that 'even once deceased, it is an offence to interfere with a carcass'. The locals in an effort to keep the whales alive until professional assistance came, covered some with blankets and soaked them with buckets of seawater. However, despite these efforts, over 300 whales have died in Tasmania so far. Various aerial images of numerous glossy black mammals were captured who were stranded on the end of the beach. An unfortunate coincidence It is pertinent to note that two years ago on September 21, the same date as today, one of Australia's worst mass whale stranding incidents was recorded. At the time, over 470 pilot whales were stranded in the region. An elaborate rescue operation was launched at the time as well. And while 111 whales were saved, 350 lost their lives, leaving the humongous task of disposing of their carcasses. At least 14 dead sperm whales were found on a beach of King Island in Australia, as per local authorities. King Island is a southeastern island of Australia. A spokesperson for Australia's Department of Natural Resources and Environment was mentioned by Reuters as saying that all carcasses were of young males and they were already dead when they were reported to authorities on Monday (September 19). Experts have been dispatched to the island to investigate the stranding.

Local media reported that authorities were deciding how to remove the dead whales. They may be left to decompose naturally because the carcasses are surrounded by rocks and this may make it difficult for vehicles to tow them away.

Whale strandings have also been reported on the beaches of King Island in the past. The exact reason behind this is yet unknown.

BBC quoted Vanessa Pirotta, a wildlife scientist, who said that the males were probably part of a 'bachelor pod', a group of young whales who got into trouble.

Whales are generally deepwater creatures who spend time offshore.

According to Pirotta, this group of whales may have 'misnavigated' following a disoriented or sick leader.

"All whale strandings remain a mystery. We don't exactly know why they happen," Pirotta told BBC.

Ask the movie aficionados and they will say Steven Spielberg's 'Jaws' series had made sharks a fearsome creature for many. However, a rare shark discovered in Australia recently could be a stuff of nightmares that rivals Spielberg's sharks.

Reportedly, the menacing-looking shark was discovered by a Sydney-based fisherman named Trapman Bermagui. He posted the photo of the beast on Facebook after reeling it in from a depth of 2,133 feet (650 metres) below the surface.

Dean Grubbs, associate research director at Florida State University’s Coastal and Marine Laboratory stated Trapman's catch could be a rough skin dogfish shark.

“In my deep-sea research, we have caught quite a few of them in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Bahamas. They are in the family Somniosidae, the sleeper sharks, the same family of the Greenland shark, but obviously a much smaller species,” Grubbs told Newsweek.

In Australia, scientists found the world's oldest heart in a 380 million-year-old type of fish. Scientists claim that the study, led by Curtin University in Perth, reveals how human bodies have evolved.

The fish fossil was discovered by researchers in the Gogo Formation in West Australia's Kimberley area.

The fish specimens were kept in limestone concretions, and the study team, led by Professor Kate Trinajstic, scanned them using x-rays and neutron beams, according to a statement from Curtin University.

The soft tissues inside them were then captured in three dimensions.

For the first time, research has produced a 3D model of a complicated s-shaped heart in an extinct type of jawed fish called an arthrodire. The study was published in the journal Science.

Australia has now introduced smart bins as a solution for waste management issues that the country faces. The AI-powered smart bin is equipped to segregate recyclables all by itself. However, experts are claiming that a smart bin like this may also increase waste-recovery rates in the country and help produce better quality recyclable products that will add to Australia's GDP.

On Tuesday, the Australian government indicated that Queen Elizabeth II’s image would not automatically be replaced with King Charles III on the country’s A$5 notes. However, the coins are still mandated to carry the British monarch’s image, but the notes may be replaced by Australian figures, said the country’s federal assistant minister for the Treasury, Andrew Leigh.

The federal minister also said that it was not about the queen’s status as a monarch but her personality that led to the decision to include her image on the A$5 notes and any changes would not be “automatic”. “It is a conversation that will take place in the government. There's no rush about it. The priority now is changing over the coins,” said Leigh.

Similarly, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also said that he is yet to decide if an Australian should be on the A$5 note. “I think this is a time where a bit of respect is required. We will deal with these issues appropriately, in an orderly way, in a way that is respectful.”

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed the development of La Nina weather pattern for the third consecutive year in the Pacific, upping the risk of rain and floods in different parts of the world.

According to the World Meteorological Organization, a UN agency, it is for the first time in this century that La Niña has returned for three consecutive years.

"It is exceptional to have three consecutive years with a La Nina event," WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said in a statement.

La Niña weather pattern is one of the three phases of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO).

It refers to the unusual cooling of the tropical eastern Pacific. La Nina, which means The Little Girl in Spanish, represent periods of below-average sea surface temperatures across the east-central Equatorial Pacific.

Under this weather pattern, the atmospheric circulation across the tropical Pacific is set up so that warm waters to Australia's north-east and strong trade winds pump moisture into the atmosphere along Australia's east coast.

When the right systems come along, they then tap into that moisture, bringing about heavy rains and flooding.

The bureau, in its fortnightly update of Australia’s climate drivers, said that key atmospheric and oceanic indicators of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (Enso) showed “an established La Niña”.

“Tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures have been cooling since June and are now at La Niña thresholds,” the bureau said.

“Models indicate this La Niña event may peak during the spring and return to neutral conditions early in 2023,” it added.

Impacts of La Nina across the globe

La Nina tends to bring milder winters in Northern Europe, especially UK, and colder winters in southern and western Europe, leading to snow in the Mediterranean region. It reduces the number of autumnal hurricanes across Europe.

It is in the American continent where the extreme climate conditions due to La Nina are felt the most.

In the Pacific, stronger winds arrive along the equatorial region. While it leads to favourable conditions for hurricanes in the Caribbean and central Atlantic area. In various states of US, frequent tornados are observed.

In Australia, Indonesia and other parts of Asia, La Nina brings heavy rainfall and can even cause more lightning activity in the Gulf of Mexico and along the Gulf Coast and increase the number of hurricanes and tropical cyclones, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The condition is reversed in South America, where La Nina causes drought, especially in countries of Peru and Ecuador.

The situation is the same in East Africa as well. The fourth season of failed rains is currently causing one of the worst droughts East Africa has seen in decades.

According to the UN’s World Food Programme, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia are on the brink of an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, and up to 20 million people are at risk of severe hunger.

A four million-year-old chunk of the Earth's crust, the size of Ireland, has been found floating under Western Australia.

According to the research which was published online on June 17 in the journal Terra Nova, the old crust spans an area of at least 38,610 square miles (100,000 square kilometres) and is buried "Tens of kilometres" underground.

The Earth is 4.54 billion years old and the piece of Earth's crust is 4 billion old which makes it among the oldest on Earth. The rocks of the Canadian Shield, which are located on the eastern shore of Hudson Bay and date back 4.3 billion years, are the oldest, according to Space.

Due to plate tectonics, which continuously stirs up and pushes Earth's crust back into the mantle, the majority of the planet's rocky surface was formed within the last couple of billion years.

Researchers have discovered the crust near Australia's Jack Hills, a site that is also home to small minerals called zircons that date back 4.4 billion years. This makes them the oldest materials on Earth to have been found.

Maximilian Droellner, a doctoral student at Curtin University in Australia and study co-author, said in a statement that the oldest crust like the recently discovered chunk in Western Australia tends to date back around 4 billion years. He said that this suggests that something noteworthy occurred in that period of Earth's history.
