After a lengthy immigration battle and four years in detention, the Nadesalingam family returned to Biloela city after they were taken from their home by the Australian Border Force.

For four years, Biloela locals protested their detainment and attempted deportation in 2018. Their case had become a leading example of Australia’s harsh treatment of asylum seekers.

The family of 4—Priya, Nades, Kopika and Tharnicaa —were welcomed with cheers of joy as they stepped onto the tarmac in the outback community, as supporters of the Tamil family waved banners and "welcome Home" signs.

As the family walked out of Thangool airport on Friday, Priya dropped to her knees and kissed the ground.

“I am so happy,” The Guardian quoted Priya as saying. “I am starting a new life.”

She said she hoped their arrival would mark a new beginning for her family and daughters.

“I felt like I was flying, I can't describe the moment of landing in Bilo," she said through a translator, according to News Nine.

The family was moved to Perth last year after their daughter Tharnicaa contracted sepsis. As she required urgent medical attention, three members of the family were granted year-long visas, but were forced to remain in Perth as Tharnicaa was required to remain in detention.

In May, the family was granted bridging visas, allowing them to leave community detention in Perth and return to their home in Biloela. But they were still not guaranteed their asylum status.

Nearly 600,000 people signed Home to Bilo campaigner Angela Fredericks’ Change.org petition in support of the family, and more than 53,000 phone calls and emails were made to Australian politicians from the family’s supporters across the country.

On Saturday, the family will attend Biloela’s multicultural Flourish festival – which is expected to attract 1,000 extra attendees to welcome the family home – before celebrating Tharnicaa’s fifth birthday on Sunday.

To repair the damage caused due to a controversial decision last year to scrap the French submarine deal, Australia's new Labor-led government has reached a 555 million euro($583.58 million)settlement, a move Canberra hopes will help repair the rift between the two countries.

Australia last year cancelled a multi-billion-dollar order for submarines with the French military shipyard Naval Group and opted instead for an alternative deal with the United States and Britain.

The move enraged Paris and triggered an unprecedented diplomatic crisis. It has also riled China, the major rising power in the Indo-Pacific region.

Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Saturday in a news conference in Sydney that his government had reached a "fair and equitable" settlement with the Naval Group.

The cancellation last year of Canberra's order for a new conventional submarine fleet with Naval Group - valued at $40 billion in 2016 and reckoned to cost much more today - came after the previous government signed a trilateral security partnership with the United States and Britain.

The trilateral deal was for a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines with U.S. and British technology.

Albanese said the settlement would allow Australia to move forward in its relationship with France.

"Given the gravity of the challenges that we face both in the region and globally, it is essential that Australia and France once again unite to defend our shared principles and interests," Albanese said in a separate statement.

Australia, the United States, France and its partners have all expressed concern about China's growing influence in the Pacific, a region that has traditionally been under their sway. Their concerns increased after China and the Solomon Islands signed a security pact earlier in the year.

"We deeply respect France’s role and active engagement in the Indo-Pacific," Albanese said.
He added he was looking forward to taking up French President Emmanuel Macron's invitation to visit Paris.

The world is aware of the public health risks caused by mosquitoes, which are members of a group of almost 3,600 species of small flies within the family Culicidae. Recently, a new species of mosquito, Aedes shehzadae, has been discovered 90 years after the first (and only other observation) of it in Papua New Guinea. The Conversation published the report by Cameron Webb, Craig Williams, Larissa Braz Sousa and Marlene Walter. The experts credited the "most remarkable observations uploaded to iNaturalist in recent years" to citizen science. In the report, it has been mentioned that Aedes shehzadae was first captured in Australia by photographer John Lenagan in 2021. For months, he was on the lookout in the Kutini-Payamu National Park (Iron Range) in Queensland’s Cape York. The details around the "unique discovery" have been provided by the researchers in this month's edition of the Journal of Vector Ecology. The report added that the only other specimen of this mosquito was collected almost 90 years ago in Papua New Guinea. The report clearly mentioned that a further probe is required as researchers don't know much about Aedes shehzadae yet. Authors in the report have mentioned that they are not even sure whether it's a new arrival in Australia, or if it had simply not been observed before. Famous comedian John Oliver has put up an offer to buy the contentious banana statue in Melbourne that was removed from public display after it was recently vandalized.

The 1.8m tall fiberglass banana was erected on Rose Street, Fitzroy to slow traffic by the City of Yarra for $22,000 from artist Adam Stone. Stone said that it represents hubris and climate change. Amid strong public backlash and vandalism, the installation was removed and put in storage within weeks.

The city council has made no statements as to if and when the statue will be back on display.

City mayor Sophie Wade said, "We are so excited to hear John Oliver loves our banana sculpture as much as we do, but I am sad to say the City of Yarra is not ready to part with it just yet."

Oliver’s offer consisted of a $10 payment to buy the statue and offer an alligator statue of similar size with a raised middle finger that was produced by his company to install in place of all confederacy statues in Florida. He also offered to donate $10,000 to the Foodbank in Melbourne and a further $5,000 to the Zoo of Australia.

Anything can be published on social media. It is important to not blindly follow it and make a learned judgement. This holds true for an incident recently where an influencer on TikTok suggested that using the Type-2 diabetes medication, Ozempic (semaglutide), can help in weight loss. When the video of the influencer went viral, the citizens in Australia began buying the drug in bulk, media reports said. It led to a shortage of the medicine. The shortage with many medical bodies has been confirmed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration in a statement.

“The increased demand is due to extensive prescribing for obesity management, for which Ozempic is not indicated. The shortage is significantly affecting people using Ozempic for its approved use for type 2 diabetes,” the statement read as quoted in a report published by The Guardian.

European settlers found Australia in 1786, within two years the colonization began. Unlike India and many other countries, Australia never formally ended ties. About 200 years later, a legislation was passed to make Australia a commonwealth but the Queen remains head of state

Will New Australian PM replace Queen as head of state?

There is now an 'assistant minister for the republic' in Australia, raising the possibility that the Queen will no longer be the country's head of state. Anthony Albanese, the new prime minister, chose Sydney MP Matt Thistlethwaite, 51, as a senior party figure.

Although creating a republic was not in Albanese's programme, past Labor leaders had pledged it. In a referendum in 1999, 55% of voters said no to a republic.

The Australian Republic Movement, which advocates for an Australian head of state, applauded the initiative.

"We are on our way," proclaimed Peter FitzSimons, a prominent republican, author and former rugby international.

"Let the record show, for the first time in the history of the Commonwealth, Australia has a member of the government singularly devoted to removing the crown, and helping Australia become a republic," he added.

Albanese's manifesto did not include a referendum on the Queen's removal, which had been promised by previous Labor leaders. Mr. Albanese, a lifelong republican, has previously called the change "inevitable."

In a referendum in 1999, 55 percent of Australians decided against becoming a republic. The triumph was attributed to a debate over a suggestion that the Queen's replacement be chosen by parliamentarians rather than the general public.

Albanese said on Tuesday that Labor had won enough votes in the federal elections on May 21 to govern without the help of minor parties or independents. On July 26, the new parliament will convene.

Australia step closer to replacing Queen as it appoints ‘minister for republic’

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has inducted a record 13 women cabinet ministers, including the first female Muslim, in Australia's new government on Wednesday—compared to 7 women ministers in Scott Morrison’s liberal government.

Apart from that, Industry Minister Ed Husick and Youth Minister Anne Ali became the first Muslim ministers in the Australian federal government.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Governor-General David Hurley in the capital Canberra city where 23 ministers were inducted on Wednesday.

“Proud to lead an inclusive government that is as diverse as Australia itself. Welcome to all these new Labor members,” the new PM tweeted.

Of the 30 ministers appointed to the new government, nearly half are women. Women also hold a record 10 spots out of 23 in core Cabinet roles.

“This is the largest number of women ever in an Australian cabinet with 10 women in the cabinet. In addition to that … there are 13 women in the ministry and 19 frontbenchers [which includes assistant ministers]. A record number, in all three categories for women’s representation – in the cabinet, in the ministry and frontbench positions,” Guardian quoted Albanese as saying on Tuesday night.

China seals deal with Samoa causing fresh jitters in western sphere

There have been a lot of chatter about China building a military base in the Solomon Islands, but foreign minister Wang Yi has made it clear that they have no such intention. The Chinese minister, who is currently on a tour of the Pacific islands, dismissed all the speculations which were born out of their recent security pact with the island nation. The rumours started when a leaked copy of the agreement showed that it contained a provision that allowed China to deploy their navy as part of the new agreement. However, China said that it was "above board, with honesty and integrity".

"It is not imposed on anyone, nor is it targeted at any third party. There is no intention at all to establish a military base," Wang told a news conference according to an AFP report.

The leaked document created tensions in Australia – a nation which is quite close to the Solomon Islands – but Wang said that the fears were completely baseless at the moment.

"China's cooperation with Pacific Island countries does not target any country and should not be interfered or disrupted by any other country," he added in the press conference.

The foreign minister also took a shot on Australia for saying the islands were 'in their backyard'.

"They are not the backyard of anyone. All the Pacific Island countries are entitled to make their own choice instead of being just mere followers of others," the foreign minister said through a translator.

"Any smears and attacks on the normal security cooperation between China and Solomon Islands are not above the board and any such disruption will not get anywhere," he concluded.

Australian players have raised ethical concerns about travelling to Sri Lanka for a full-fledged tour amid the economic crisis and political unrest in the country. Australia are scheduled to play 3 T20Is, 5 ODIs and 2 Tests in Sri Lanka in June-July. Ahead of the team's departure next week, some of the members of the Australian team have raised concerns over travelling to the Island nation at such a time but will support the decision taken by the officials of Cricket Australia.

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg revealed the players have raised ethical concerns but confirmed that the tour will go ahead as per schedule. Sri Lanka is currently battling one of its worst-ever economic crises with inflation soaring across the country and an acute shortage of resources like fuel and electricity.

The ongoing economic crisis in Sri Lanka has occurred majorly due to a severe shortage of foreign currency reserves. While COVID-19 impacted the tourism sector in the country, the reduction in exports also took a heavy toll on Sri Lanka's economy. Sri Lanka was under curfew earlier this month after protests in the country turned violent.
