“This could be a game-changer for people with asthma and COPD. Treatment for asthma and COPD exacerbations has not changed in 50 years, despite causing 3.8 million deaths worldwide a year combined," lead investigator Prof. Mona Bafadhel, of King’s College London, told The Guardian.&nbsp;

“Benralizumab is a safe and effective drug already used to manage severe asthma. We’ve used the drug in a different way – at the point of an exacerbation – to show that it’s more effective than steroid tablets, which is the only treatment currently available," he further added.&nbsp;

In a heartbreaking incident, a 46-year-old woman – who was disabled and had asthma – died while sitting on a chair and waiting for a hospital bed for 39 hours.

Marina Young was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital in Lancashire after she complained of a headache and shortness of breath.

The doctors soon decided that the woman needed to be admitted, however, the hospital was full of patients and more than 50 patients were waiting for a bed in A&amp;E.

However, the severity of the woman's condition was underestimated by the staff who did not give her specialist drugs and also did not take her to critical care or respiratory medics.

For two nights, Marina sat on a chair and the next day she collapsed and her clothes were soaked in her urine.&nbsp;

The hospital carried out an internal investigation in which it was discovered that Young, who had spina bifida, may not have suffered a cardiac arrest if she had been given more timely treatment.

Speaking to MailOnline, retired hospital ward sister Michelle said, "Marina died in horrific circumstances.&nbsp;It is sickening to think that my sister could be treated with such a lack of compassion by the NHS, which is supposed to care for all people, irrespective of their physical limitations."&nbsp;

"These factors can significantly impact their lungs, worsening pre-existing chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma or increasing their susceptibility to developing such conditions," Dr Mankikar added.&nbsp;

"Children should prefer to take the prescribed medicines for asthma and allergies prescribed by their paediatrician timely. In case of any symptoms, one must immediately consult the doctor," he added.&nbsp;

WION spoke to experts to understand the main reason behind the rising cases of asthma during the winter season and also understand who is at higher risk. Dr Vikram Jaggi (MD, DNB), who is a founder and director of Asthma Chest Allergy Centre in Delhi and Gurgaon weighed in on the same. He said that ranging from mould, dampness and dust mites to exposure to chest infections as well as cold and flu viruses, winter comes with quite a few asthma triggers, with cold air itself being a common trigger. He said that in some cases, cold air leads to the production of histamine in the airways which can "instigate allergy-related irritations causing symptoms in asthmatics to worsen". Dr Jaggi also mentioned that the issue, in fact, can also lead to an attack and newer cases of weather-induced asthma. He stated that cold and flu viruses run rampant during winter, and most people may just seem like a passing malady — for asthmatics it could "result in that infection developing into pneumonia". Who is at higher risk? Dr Jaggi noted that children and the elderly are perhaps the most vulnerable during this time of year. Children are more susceptible to common colds and infections during this time of year, while any exacerbated symptoms in older asthmatics lead to an aggravated condition. Dr Jaggi urged the two mentioned groups to be careful during the winter season and if they are asthmatics, they should pay special attention. Dr (Brig) Ashok K Rajput (Retd), from the department of pulmonology at the CK Birla Hospital (R) in Delhi, also registered what Dr Jaggi said. Dr Rajput stated that kids and older people are more at risk, especially those having underlying obstructive airway disease of in fact any chronic respiratory illness. "Smog and fog add fuel to the fire," said Dr Rajput, further adding that airway mucus thickens, increasing the chance of getting respiratory infections like the common cold or flu. These infections lead to exacerbations and trigger asthma symptoms. Pointing out the air pollution, Dr Rajput said that smoking, pollution due to wood burning, campfires etc all make air quality poor and worsen asthma symptoms. Dr Puneet Khanna, the HOD pulmonology department at the HCMCT Manipal Hospital in Dwarka highlighted how air pollution is leading to respiratory issues. Dr Khanna said that an Air Quality Index (AQI) in the range of 50 to 100 leads to increased inflammatory response and difficulty in breathing for patients sensitive to respiratory diseases. An AQI of above 300 poses problems for healthy people as well. Air pollution has a massive impact on the health of people. it is a known fact that the combined effects of outdoor and household air pollution cause millions of premature deaths every year resulting from stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections. Dr Khanna stated that "from smoke inside the home to smog hanging over cities, air pollution is a major threat to health and climate". 'Avoid early morning outdoor walks' Dr Rajput suggested that early morning outdoor walks and exercises are not good for asthmatics and should be avoided. Dr Khanna also urged that early morning walks are not advisable as pollution levels are highest in the morning, and merely walking could result in health complications due to the high concentration of particulate matter. A word to parents Dr Jaggi said that parents should keep a close eye on their children to understand their triggers and communicate them to their doctor. "Since asthma tends to worsen with age, the elderly should be careful and adhere to inhalation therapy as prescribed by their doctor," Dr Jaggi said. He also said that taking the mentioned precautionary measure may help them reduce unexpected triggers and control their symptoms over time, both during and after winters. He also noted that both groups should have an action plan in place in consultation with their doctor, an inhaler as per their doctor’s recommendation. The current situation in New Delhi Dr Puneet Khanna explained the current situation of the Indian national capital, New Delhi, where the air was unbreathable in the past few weeks. Dr Khanna said that the national capital is witnessing a significant deterioration of air quality over the past few days which has coincided with the spike in asthma cases. Every year bad air quality in Delhi accounts for more than a 20 per cent rise in asthma cases across outpatient departments (OPDs) in the city. It is also responsible for asthma-related IPD admissions across the city. He said that environmental air pollution is one of the most important social determinants of health. The inner linings of the lungs are damaged by air pollution thereby increasing the severity of asthma infection. While commenting on the asthma risks, he said that "low temperatures and increased air pollution lead to the suspension of particulate matter for a longer duration which increases the transmission of respiratory viruses including corona, making people more vulnerable to infections". "I didn't want to wipe him off, that's my husband I didn't want to wipe him away so I just licked him off my fingers. And here I am today almost two months later and I can't stop, I'm eating my husband," Casie admitted.<o:p></o:p>

Human ashes cannot be eaten like normal food, so Casie slowly nibbles on it by slowly wrapping the ashes around her finger and then licking it off her finger.<o:p></o:p>

"I swirl around to get it caked on there good and then I just eat it," she said.<o:p></o:p>

However, she also confessed that she does not like the taste of the ashes and that it tastes like rotten eggs, sad and sandpaper. But, Casie says she has gotten used to it and has also started to like it now.<o:p></o:p>

Although she is not a fan of the taste of the ashes, eating it gives her a sense of happiness and adrenaline rush, she says. "When I open up the urn I get a sense of happiness, it's like an adrenaline rush for me and the more I eat the more excited I get until I realise there's not a lot left," she said.<o:p></o:p>

Air pollution has been linked to obesity in studies all around the world, but this is the first time a new study in the country has proven how high levels of air pollution might contribute to weight gain.

This is also one of the first studies in India among teenage school children to reveal a strong correlation between obesity and asthma, as well as the possibility that air pollution plays a role in both.&nbsp;

Obese children had a 79 per cent higher likelihood of having asthma, according to the study.

The two groups were hospitalized at similar rates (18% to 21%) and had similar need for mechanical ventilation (3% in the asthma group vs 4%). But the asthma patients were 70% less likely to die from the virus, researchers reported. None of the 44 patients with severe asthma died.

The exact reason behind this is not yet known, the researchers are attributing this partially to medicines used to treat Asthma.

"Although the factors underlying these findings are not yet known, important considerations include: possible biologic mechanisms ... and possible protective effects of asthma medications (such as corticosteroids)," the researchers said in a report posted on Monday on medRxiv ahead of peer review.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, a new test is proving to be better at identifying coronavirus infections

Becton Dickenson and Co's BD Veritor System for rapid detection of the novel coronavirus is better than gold standard RT-PCR lab tests at distinguishing between infectious and non-infectious virus in swab samples obtained within a week of symptom onset, according to a new study.

One drawback of the RT-PCR (real-time polymerase chain reaction) is that patients can test positive even after they are no longer infectious, because the tests detect small amounts of viral RNA that most likely represent infected cells that have died.&nbsp;

Newer "antigen-based" tests look for viral proteins instead of RNA. The antigen-based approach could potentially "be used to identify and isolate contagious individuals more effectively than current RNA-based (RT-PCR) testing," coauthor Celine Roger-Dalbert of BD Life Sciences told Reuters.

"Although it may not replace RNA-based testing, because we still need to identify anyone who was infected in order to trace the spread of the virus, it should help make isolation more efficient and effective as a public health intervention used to slow down the spread of COVID-19," she added.

In this context, it would be apt to understand the challenges and opportunities of the air pollution crisis for a new generation born into smoking ‘cigarettes’ from their very first breath. They are being subjected to inhale polluted air, a disturbing legacy of urban growth passed on to them. Not a great life to long for.&nbsp;

Children constitute over one-third of the population. The way they handle toxins places them at far greater risk than the adult population and sadly, the younger they are, the greater the risk. They are also closer to the ground, so at greater risk to suspended low-hanging pollutants.&nbsp;

In fact, this risk begins even before birth with studies demonstrating how air pollution exposure to the mother results in numerous adverse outcomes for the unborn child, including low birth weight and in acute cases, even still-births.&nbsp;

While the number of years each child is losing due to air pollution is still being debated, it would be highly unlikely and unrealistic to expect that our smog-filled environs is actually extending lives.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently released a report on the impact of air pollution on child health, following a global warning by UNICEF a few months earlier. In terms of health effects, a number of different conditions were highlighted besides asthma and pneumonia, but including autism, childhood cancer and obesity.

While respiratory related conditions have been fairly well researched in the Indian context, there is a paucity of evidence for other outcomes.&nbsp;

However, the absence of evidence does not in any way amount to the evidence of absence. As research for these conditions takes place in the Indian context, we will certainly see similar results, although the relative risk may differ.

The impact of air pollution for children goes beyond health. With mounting global evidence indicating that air pollution has deleterious effects on the brain, including cognition and learning, the impact on education in India hasn’t even been considered so far. &nbsp;

A US study, for example, has shown that when students taking standardised tests are separated into two groups, one where air quality is better and one where it is worse, the ones where air quality is better are significantly in an advantageous position. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Already, with the sort of air pollution levels seen in India, especially in cities like Delhi, and the other growing so-called ‘smart-cities’ marked by WHO for their pathetic pollution levels, many schools have stopped outdoor physical activity for children, a component, which is important for the growth of any child. In addition, there is always the ‘sword of Damocles’ hanging over school authorities to shut down schools.

However, in this gloom, today’s youngsters will certainly make the lotus bloom. They are now at the forefront of innovation, which was unthinkable ten years ago. Amply demonstrated by creating a sensor for traffic congestion or an app for personal monitoring of pollution, they are now becoming effective champions of change through innovation, apart from propagating the conventional ideas of using public transport or car pools, planting trees or simply by wearing a mask when they step outside in the very poor air quality.&nbsp;

Children can be harbingers of change, but ultimately at a societal level, adults have to take responsibility and ensure radical changes in emission reduction. After all, children are the most innocent victims of a world they did not create. Let’s give them a long life along with a world that is worth longing for.&nbsp;

To sum up, one does hope that the new government, after the general polls this year, does not create a situation where the environment is defeated by development.

Or else, we will have to take the words of a famous environmentalist seriously: “The cost of our society’s success is energy crises, climate change, pollution, and the destruction of our habitat. If we continue in the same direction, there will be nothing left for our children.”

Environment gets short shrift

German carmakers came under fire Monday following revelations they helped finance experiments that saw humans and monkeys exposed to toxic diesel fumes that have been linked to asthma, lung diseases and heart attacks.

The disclosures sparked widespread outrage, led by Chancellor Angela Merkel who strongly condemned the latest controversy to engulf the nation&#39;s powerful but scandal-tainted auto industry

&quot;These tests on monkeys or even humans are in no way ethically justified,&quot; said Merkel&#39;s spokesman Steffen Seibert.

&quot;The indignation felt by many people is completely understandable.&quot;

Earlier Monday the Sueddeutsche and Stuttgarter Zeitung dailies reported that a research group funded by Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW had measured the effects of inhaling nitrogen oxide gases on 25 healthy human beings at a German university hospital.

The revelation came just days after the New York Times wrote that the same organisation carried out tests on monkeys in the United States in 2014.

According to the NYT article, the researchers locked 10 monkeys into airtight chambers and made them breathe in diesel exhausts from a VW Beetle while watching cartoons.

Volkswagen apologised for the animal testing at the weekend, saying the group &quot;distances itself clearly from all forms of animal abuse&quot;.

Special meeting&nbsp;

The German government has called a special meeting with the affected car companies to ask them to explain themselves, said acting transport minister Christian Schmidt.

&quot;This has once again damaged trust in the auto industry,&quot; he said.

It was VW&#39;s admission in 2015 that it had manipulated 11 million diesel cars with cheating software to make them seems less polluting than they were that brought close scrutiny to the industry, which had long touted diesels as better for the environment than gasoline-powered engines.

Several German cities grappling with air pollution are now mulling diesel bans.

All three German carmakers have distanced themselves from the research body in question -- the now defunct European Research Group on Environment and Health in the Transport Sector (EUGT) -- and promised to launch internal investigations.

&quot;The BMW Group did not participate in the mentioned studies,&quot; the luxury carmaker said in a statement.

&quot;We are appalled by the extent of the studies and their implementation,&quot; a Daimler spokesman told AFP.
