Inflation in Argentina has jumped to its highest level in three decades, just a week before the country elects its new president. Compared to a year ago, inflation has accelerated to 138.3%. That's the highest level since the early 1990s when Argentina was exiting hyperinflation.

Record high inflation in Argentina

Argentina is eliminating income tax for most of its formal workers ahead of the election season. The move has been taken to offer relief to people hit by rising inflation; however, experts fear it will end up further ballooning the fiscal deficit.

The Latin American country is reeling under a massive 124 per cent inflation before October’s presidential elections, pushing the ruling party to roll out generous schemes.

Legislation eliminating income tax was approved by the country’s Senate on Thursday (Sep 28) by a 38-27 vote, which was backed by Argentina’s Economy Minister and presidential hopeful Sergio Massa.

The bill is expected to be signed into law by President Alberto Fernandez. Presidential elections will be held in Argentina on October 22.

A political move

It is to be noted that the economy ministry has already exempted around 99 per cent of the formal workforce from paying taxes through a decree. However, the new legislation eliminates the income taxes altogether.

Only those earning more than $5057 per month will be exposed to the income tax provisions, who account for a tiny fraction of the total workforce. The new government will assume the charge on December 10 and can very well reverse the changes to steer the nation out of the financial mess.

“We have made the decision to charge an extraordinary income tax to those sectors that were the biggest winners of the devaluation imposed by the International Monetary Fund,” he said while justifying the imposition of extra tax.

Burden on economy

All of these freebies will cost the government a whopping $5.7 billion, which will be largely financed with central bank money printing that will fuel future inflation.

The increased fiscal spending, along with the lost revenue due to the elimination of income tax, heightens risks to Argentina’s $44 billion programme with the International Monetary Fund after Massa had committed to austerity in August.

World champions Argentina retain top position in FIFA world rankings

World champions Argentina rested Lionel Messi but still enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win over 10-man Bolivia in La Paz on Tuesday to maintain their winning start to South American World Cup qualifying.

But Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay suffered a setback, giving up the lead to end with a 2-1 defeat at Ecuador.

Messi, who has had a hectic schedule with his club Inter Miami, watched his teammates from the bench but was not listed as a substitute, having complained of tiredness after scoring the winner in Thursday's 1-0 victory over Ecuador.

Despite the absence of their talisman, Lionel Scaloni's side had too much firepower for Bolivia with goals from Enzo Fernandez, Nicolas Tagliafico and Nicolas Gonzalez securing the victory.

Chelsea midfielder Fernandez went close with a wonderful effort from 30 yards out that was heading into the top corner before Bolivia keeper Guillermo Viscarra tipped it over.

Viscarra then did well again to keep out a near post drive from Julian Alvarez, who had taken advantage of some sloppy defending.

The lively Alvarez had a hand in Argentina's opener in the 31st minute, feeding Angel Di Maria, whose low cross was turned in by Fernandez, who had made a perfectly timed run into the box.

Eight minutes later, Bolivia’s task got even tougher when Roberto Fernandez was sent off for an over-the-top challenge on Cristian Romero.

Argentina went in at the break with a 2-0 lead after Tagliafico met a floated Di Maria free-kick with a header that looped over Viscarra.

The three-time World Cup winners were in total control after the break with Alvarez hitting the post in the 70th minute and Viscarra kept busy by efforts from Rodrigo De Paul and Di Maria.

Fernandez wrapped up the victory seven minutes from the end with a left-footed drive after more hesitant defending from the home side, who have lost both their opening games.

Scaloni was pleased with the performance given by his team saying they were "not afraid to play with the ball and also offered an explanation for Messi's absence.

"Leo was not ready to play, he tried to recover, but he did not feel comfortable," he said.

After an impressive start to his reign in charge of Uruguay, Argentine Bielsa saw his team lose to two goals from Ecuador defender Felix Torres in Quito.

Uruguay had taken the lead in the 38th minute with Agustin Canobbio collecting a pass from Maximiliano Araujo and turning sharply before firing home.

But the home side levelled just before the break when Felix Torres rose to power home a header from a Moises Caicedo cross.

A penalty award gave Ecuador the opportunity to take the lead after the break but Enner Valencia's woeful effort from the spot flew wide.

But defender Felix Torres showed his value again, to grab the winner, sliding into a crowded box to turn in a low cross from 16-year-old Kendry Paez.

The decisions proved crucial in Venezuela’s victory over Paraguay.

The 'Vinotinto' thought they had the lead in the 78th minute when Yangel Herrera brought down a cross from Jefferson Savarino and fired home, but the referee's review at the monitor concluded that the midfielder had handled the ball -- to the fury of the passionate home crowd.

But the technology worked in Venezuela's favor in stoppage time when it spotted that Paraguay defender Ivan Piris had handled during an aerial challenge in the box and Salomon Rondon confidently tucked away the spot-kick.

The win will raise Venezuela's hopes of making a World Cup tournament for the first time in their history.

The qualification process for the expanded 48-team World Cup, to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, offers two extra places for South America with six teams qualifying directly.

The seventh out of the 10 nations will head to an inter-continental play-off.

Later on Tuesday, Colombia are away to Chile and Brazil are in Peru.

FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Argentina win without Lionel Messi, Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay fall in Ecuador

There's no relief in sight for Argentina's troubled Peso. It is at risk of suffering another devaluation after this year's presidential election. A recent Reuters poll shows that the Peso is expected to trade at 419.8 per dollar in 3 months. This would imply a 16.6% devaluation on the heels of the October 22 presidential election.

Argentinian publicist Santiago Barros is using artificial intelligence to create adulthood images of children who were taken from their parents four decades ago during Argentina's military dictatorship.

Barros uploads these images almost every day on an Instagram account called iabuelas. The name is a portmanteau in Spanish for artificial intelligence or IA and grandmother, or abuela. The name is also inspired by the well-known activist group Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo. The activist group searches for missing children.

“We have seen the photos of most of the disappeared, but we don’t have photos of their children, of those children who were stolen,” Barros told The Associated Press. “It struck me that these people did not have a face.”

During the years of dictatorship in Argentina (1976-1983) there was a systematic theft of babies of political dissidents carried out by military officials. These dissidents were detained or often executed. The babies were then raised by families linked to the dictatorship as if they were their own.

Barros used an app called Midjourney and combined photos of the disappeared fathers and mothers from the public archive of the Grandmothers website. He created images showing what the faces of these children, now in adulthood, would look like.

For each combination, the app shows two female and two male possibilities.

Barros then chooses the image of each gender that seems most realistic.

The project is not an attempt to replace efforts headed by the Grandmothers group of identifying grandchildren through DNA testing but the goal is to stir the conscience of those over 46 who may be doubtful about their origin and to serve as a reminder of the more than four decades the grandmothers have spent trying to locate these children.

As per the estimate by the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, around 500 children were taken from their parents during the dictatorship years. The group has been able to locate 133 grandchildren through genetic analysis.

The group has appreciated Barros' initiative as it seeks to raise awareness about the children. The group warns that the only sure-shot way to link these people with their families was DNA testing which the group continues to carry out.

In addition to working with photos from the Grandmothers’ archives, Barros uses photographic material provided by interested parties.

In some cases, those who have accessed iabuelas have noticed in the images a tendency towards standardisation, raising questions about their approximation to reality. But in others, families searching for a lost relative have been shocked by the resemblance they found in those faces to blood relatives.

Argentina's men's basketball team spurned their last chance to reach the Paris 2024 Olympics after losing 82-75 to the Bahamas in the FIBA Olympic pre-qualifying final, marking the first time they have failed to reach the Games in more than two decades. In February, Argentina were left out of the FIBA World Cup for the first time in 41 years after losing to the Dominican Republic in their final Americas qualifier.

Like the rest of the continent's teams missing the World Cup, Argentine hopes had hinged on winning the Olympic pre-qualifier that awards a berth to the champions in the pre-Olympic playoff with teams from other continents. "It was a final and the team played it as such. I think that everything we had prepared and talked about we executed 95 percent," coach Pablo Prigioni said in a press conference. "We were there, we competed at a very high level, taking into account that in the other team there are three players of a superlative level."

The Bahamas had a trio of NBA players - Deandre Ayton (Phoenix Suns center), Eric Gordon (Phoenix Suns shooting guard) and Buddy Hield (Indiana Pacers small forward), to whom Prigioni attributed much of their success. "Our reality is this - we have no players in the NBA but we have good players in Europe and we have to focus on that, on that transformation, on the growth of the young players, focusing on their improvement. "It was a great experience for many of our youngsters, I think the team competed as it should have. It was not enough for us to win, but I think they gave an example of how the group wants to become a great team," Prigioni added.

Dramatic video shows passengers running for their lives after bus catches fire in Argentina

Argentina is heading into its Presidential elections that are slated for October later this year. But a far-right rockstar libertarian has just shook up the presidential race by bagging the highest number of votes in the primary elections to choose the presidential candidates. But why is a country that has been battered by economic woes, now turning towards a rock singing, wild haired economist to govern them next?

Gravitas: Far-right 'Rockstar' steals the lead in Presidential polls in Argentina

Argentine voters punished the country's two main political forces in a primary election on Sunday, pushing a rock-singing libertarian outsider candidate into first place in a huge shake-up in the race towards presidential elections in October.

With some 90% of ballots counted, far-right libertarian economist Javier Milei had 30.5% of the vote, far higher than predicted, with the main conservative opposition bloc behind on 28% and the ruling Peronist coalition in third place at 27%.

The result is a stinging rebuke to the centre-left Peronist coalition and the main Together for Change conservative opposition bloc with inflation at 116% and a cost-of-living crisis leaving four in 10 people in poverty.

"We are the true opposition," Milei said in a bullish speech after the results. "A different Argentina is impossible with the same old things that have always failed."

Voting in the primaries is obligatory for most adults and each person gets one vote, making it in effect a dress rehearsal for the Oct. 22 general election and giving a clear indication of who is the favorite to win the presidency.

The October election will be key for policy affecting Argentina's huge farm sector, one of the world's top exporters of soy, corn and beef, the peso currency and bonds, and ongoing talks over a $44 billion debt deal with the International Monetary Fund.

The economic crisis has left many Argentines disillusioned with the main political parties and opened the door for Milei, who struck a chord especially with the young.

"Inflation is killing us and job uncertainty doesn't let you plan your life," said Adriana Alonso, a 42-year-old housewife.

As polls closed in the early evening after voting system glitches caused long lines in capital Buenos Aires, all the talk in campaign hubs was about Milei, a brash outsider who has pledged to shutter the central bank and dollarize the economy.

"Milei's growth is a surprise. This speaks of people's anger with politics," said former conservative President Mauricio Macri as he arrived at Together for Change's election bunker.

CONSERVATIVE BULLRICH BEATS MODERATE LARRETA

In the most important leadership race, within the Together for Change coalition, hard-line conservative Patricia Bullrich, a former security minister, beat out moderate Buenos Aires Mayor Horacio Larreta, who pledged to get behind her campaign.

Economy Minister Sergio Massa won the nomination for the ruling Peronist coalition, as expected, and could perform more strongly in October if he can win over more moderate voters.

The unpredictable factor had been Milei, whose loud rock-style rallies are reminiscent of ex-U.S. President Donald Trump, but he far outperformed all forecasts. Most polls had given him just shy of one-fifth of the likely vote, though were also badly wrong four years ago in the 2019 primaries.

Turnout was under 70%, the lowest for a primary election since they started to be held in Argentina over a decade ago.

Whoever wins in October, or more likely in a November runoff, will have big decisions to make on rebuilding depleted foreign reserves, boosting grains exports, reining in inflation and on how to unwind a thicket of currency controls.

Jorge Boloco, 58, a merchant, said Argentina need a "course into the future," but no party offered a clear way forward.

Maria Fernanda Medina, a 47-year-old teacher, said she had also lost some optimism about politicians truly bringing change after many years of revolving economic crises.

"I don't have much hope because in every election I feel a little disappointed," she said as she cast her ballot in Tigre, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. "But hey, we can't lose all hope, right?"

Argentine far-right outsider Javier Milei posts shock win in primary election

Argentineans will vote in primary elections on Sunday, and voters are expected to punish the country's center-left Peronist alliance in response to high inflation of 116% and a cost of living problem that has put four out of ten people in poverty.

Argentina would not use “a single dollar” of its own reserves to repay the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a Reuters report quoted economy minister Sergio Massa as saying on Monday.

As per reports, the South American nation has to repay $2.7 billion to the IMF this week.

In a speech, Massa, who is also running for presidency this October, claimed that the prolonged swap agreement with China and the new loan from the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) will make it possible.

Reuters quoted Massa as saying, “I want to bring you peace of mind - Argentina is not going to use a single dollar of its reserves to pay today's maturity."

Massa stated that the payback will be completed with a $1.7 billion second tranche of a swap with China and a $1 billion bridge loan from CAF, a step recently taken by Buenos Aires to complete a portion of its June payment to the IMF.

The move is being seen as an attempt to 'de-dollarise'. Already, countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Bangladesh, and India are using Chinese Yuan and bitcoin for international trade and payments.

According to reports from February this year, Brazil and Argentina were in talks to launch a joint currency, called the “sur”. Officials from Argentina and Brazil stated that the true goal of the initiative is to create a new unit of account (a synthetic currency similar to the International Monetary Fund’s Special Drawing Rights) for denominating bilateral trade and financial flows as an alternative to the US dollar.

Despite the near-universal rejection of the idea, the goal at its core—a reduced reliance on the US dollar—is worth considering, as per experts. A push for broader economic union in South America may spur much-needed economic growth, a Centre for International & Strategic Studies report said.

Football: Lionel Messi's Instagram story fuels speculations of him playing in next FIFA World Cup

In a bid to bolster its defence capabilities, Argentina's Defense Minister, Jorge Enrique Taiana, is in talks with India for potential acquisition of Tejas fighter jets. Speaking to our diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Minister Taiana revealed that Argentinian pilots have evaluated Tejas but pointed out hurdles over the presence of British parts. He said, "One issue is, for example, that the aircraft doesn't have not one piece of British part because the British don't sell it to Argentina. So, in the case of Tejas, it has 16 parts from the UK. So, the company has to change and replace the parts.". The minister is in India for a 4-day visit and held talks with Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday to expand the defence cooperation and Defence Industrial partnership. He also visited BrahMos Aerospace and will also travel to Bengaluru to visit the facility of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL). Asked if his country will be keen to buy BrahMos missiles, he said," I believe that there is a chance of that..". He also spoke on other topics like India's G20 presidency, expansion of BRICS to include his country.

In a bid to bolster its defence capabilities, Argentina's Defence Minister Jorge Enrique Taiana is in talks with India for the potential acquisition of Tejas fighter jets. Speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, the minister revealed that Argentinian pilots have evaluated Tejas but pointed out hurdles over the presence of British parts. He said, "One issue is, for example, that the aircraft doesn't (can't) have not one piece of British part because the British don't sell it to Argentina. So, in the case of Tejas, it has 16 parts from the UK. So, the company has to change and replace the parts."

The minister is in India for a 4-day visit and held talks with Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday to expand the defence cooperation and defence industrial partnership. He also visited BrahMos Aerospace and will also travel to Bengaluru to visit the facility of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL). Asked if his country will be keen to buy BrahMos missiles, he said, "I believe that there is a chance of that." He also spoke on other topics like India's G20 presidency, and the expansion of BRICS to include his country.

WION: What were the key focus areas of your conversation with the Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Delhi?

Jorge Enrique Taiana: The key focus is to strengthen the relations between Argentina and India in general, and in particular, how to strengthen the cooperation and the relation in the area of defence. That was the main consideration.

WION: This was your first in-person meeting with Singh, how was the conversation?

Jorge Enrique Taiana: It was very good. In particular, (there were many) coincidences in the way we look at the world and the way we look into the principles on which we have to rely like non-interference in the affairs of another state, respect for the territorial integrity, solution of all conflicts, in general support the multilateral system and this is an issue which India Argentina have strong coincidences since very long time.

WION: One thing that is on everyone's mind is whether Argentina will buy Tejas, and if during your meeting with the Indian defence minister, talks were held on your potential procurement of Tejas from India. Can you tell us anything about this?

Jorge Enrique Taiana: Well, this is a clear case, India is an emerging country that has developed and is developing a defence area with technical and very interesting characteristics. So, we are trying to look into and discuss the issue and see the possibilities of not just buying. Instead, we prefer cooperation in shared opportunities. In the case of the aircraft, because Argentina is looking for supersonic fighter aircraft, our commission, the technical commission visited several countries to look into different kinds of aircraft. And we are at the end of the process of selection. The commission will not have a decision right now but in a couple of months.

WION: How positive was the conversation?

Jorge Enrique Taiana: It is a consideration of technical issues, financial issues, and political and strategic considerations. So that point hasn't arrived yet.

WION: So, a decision is yet to be made on Tejas?

Jorge Enrique Taiana: Not just Tejas, different aircraft.

WION: Talks on Tejas started last year when Indian external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar visited Argentina. Can you shed some light on the past conversation over this?

Jorge Enrique Taiana: We have sent our pilots to try and consider different aircraft from different countries. One issue is, for example, that the aircraft doesn't (can't) have not one piece of British part because the British don't sell it to Argentina. So, in the case of Tejas, it has 16 parts from the UK. So, the company has to change and replace the parts.

WION: Has the Argentinian pilots come to India to Tejas? When it comes to the British elements of Tejas, have you suggested to the Indian side to remove them?

Jorge Enrique Taiana: This is clear in the conversation, since a month ago this is clear. Yes, Argentinian pilots have flown Tejas, twice.

WION: Has there been a conversation on procuring BrahMos missiles from India?

Jorge Enrique Taiana: Yes, also about helicopters from HAL. We are going to visit Bengaluru, and we're going to talk about helicopters too. We need to buy helicopters, and we need 2-3 chances or possibility in which we have to decide which one is the best for Argentina.

WION: Based on the various conversations you had in India, with your counterpart, how do you see the nation as a country from which you can procure defence equipment?

Jorge Enrique Taiana: Well, it's clear development that India has (achieved) in this sector in the last years. That's why we, in general, are close to India, and this is a different part of the process. One part of the process is trade, for example, and the second we have a defence attaché here. We did not have a defence attaché in the past. So, we are taking different steps to move forward or to be closer and (develop) relations with India in general and in particular in the defence area.

WION: Do you see the defence domain expanding in the next few years and months?

Jorge Enrique Taiana: Yes, because there are two different issues. One is the expansion of trade in the defence industry. And the other is that Argentina is building capacities and capabilities and these processes are underway. We need different things and India now is producing a lot of these things.

WION: So, do you see in a year's time a major defence deal between India and Argentina, perhaps procurement of Brahmos?

Jorge Enrique Taiana: I believe that there is a chance of that, but our idea is not to go to a supermarket. We're trying to build connections, and relations and engage with partners in different areas. We are expanding our exchange of students from the armed forces, and so it is a process of doing things together in different areas. And in that process one important area is defence.

WION: Are you looking towards training, given the number of military personnel who come to India for training, especially in the neighbourhood?

Jorge Enrique Taiana: We are working on it. We are working on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), probably will probably be signed before the G20 summit in September.

WION: So now coming to G20. India is the president of the G20 grouping; we are going to host the Summit in September. Argentina was previously the president of the grouping and hosted the summit. So, what's your expectation when it comes to the Indian presidency of the G20?

Jorge Enrique Taiana: Well, it's interesting because India is a country that is now showing a lot of activity, interest and initiative. So I think that the push that will come under the presidency of India is an interesting moment to make the grouping more active. The problem is that all the multilateral systems are in confusion and with difficulties to obtain consensus.

WION: You talk about multilateral institutions being in confusion, but there are multilateral institutions like the BRICS, where there is a lot of enthusiasm as well. There have been reports saying that Argentina would like to be part of an expanded BRICS grouping. So perhaps you can shed some light.

Jorge Enrique Taiana: We are going in that direction. We're moving forward in trade, defence, we're moving forward in different areas and the conclusion is that we are moving and trying to be part of the BRICS. We will have a BRICS meeting in August, we'll see what happened. But I think it is important because it is an institution, mechanism and a group of countries that are showing a lot of resources, and political initiative, but also is a group of countries that are showing that we need to build something different for a better world.

WION: So you are here in Delhi, can we expect the Indian defence minister Rajnath Singh to visit Argentina as well?

Jorge Enrique Taiana: I invited him for a meeting that we will have...the second meeting of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean with a focus on UN Peacekeeping. So, we invited him as an observer. India has a lot of participation in peacekeeping operations. We have eight places where we are working right now. So, it's interesting to see if he could come there and be part of the meeting. The meeting happens in September.

WION: What is your vision regarding the India-Argentina relationship?

In a bid to bolster its defence capabilities, Argentina's Defence Minister Jorge Enrique Taiana is in talks with India for the potential acquisition of Tejas fighter jets.

So, the company has to change and replace the parts." The minister is in India for a 4-day visit and held talks with Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday to expand the defence cooperation and defence industrial partnership. Jorge Enrique Taiana: I think that we have a long distance between our countries and different cultures, but we have common areas and lots of issues related to especially international politics. And I think that the relations between India and Argentina have a chance to grow. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
