Argentina replaces Indonesia as U-20 World Cup host, says FIFA

The Under-20 World Cup will be held in Indonesia from May 20 to June 11, according to a statement released by FIFA on Monday. Indonesia had previously been scheduled to host the event. Argentina will host the 2018 FIFA U-20 World Cup, FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced in a statement. "FIFA is delighted to announce that the home of the world champions opens its doors to tomorrow's superstars of world football," Infantino said.

The first time in decades inflation in Argentina has surged past the 100 mark, hammering salaries and the spending capacity of ordinary citizens. While the situation has pushed up poverty levels in the country by 40%, the crisis has dented the popularity of the current government ahead.

Argentina's inflation soars past 100% mark; 'zero capacity to save,' cry citizens

In Argentina, the annual inflation rate has soared to a high of 104.3 per cent. The astounding high was revealed by the nation's official statistics agency on Friday. The dry season has reportedly "hammered" soy, corn and wheat crops, and lost exports and falling domestic prices have knocked billions off the country's economy.

After winning the FIFA World Cup in what has been dubbed as one of the best finals of all time against France, Messi went on to join his teammates at Paris-Saint Germain (PSG) club. Interestingly, French superstar Kylian Mbappe, who led France's charge in the World Cup final, is teammates with Messi at the club. Mbappe has now been named the next French captain as well after Hugo Lloris' retirement. For Messi, there doesn't seem to be too much ahead as his club, PSG, is out of UEFA Champions League (UCL) after losing to German Bundesliga's Bayern Munich in Round of 16. Notably, Argentina will face Panama and Curacao in the coming week. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Morning news brief: Greece train crash a 'human error', Argentina plunges into darkness and more

More than half of the households in Argentina plunged into darkness for two hours after the national electricity grid was affected by the fire on Wednesday. The capital city Buenos Aires, along with other major cities and large areas in the countryside, were partly or wholly affected.

As per reports, the fire started in open fields, affecting the important power lines in the coastal zone as a nuclear power station went offline. The electricity was restored in the capital city at about 6:00 pm (2100 GMT) as lights flickered in the metro system, and gradually the public services were restored.

The reports of the first power outages surfaced from 4:00-5:00 pm local time, as traffic lights went out of order and metro stations in Buenos Aires went into total darkness.

Speaking to the C5N network, Argentina's undersecretary for energy Santiago Yanotti said that there has been an increase in power demand due to the high temperatures.

The sudden power blackout came amid drought and heatwave in Argentina. As the South American nation is still in the summer months, the temperatures have consistently been more than 35C in a few parts of the country.
