G20 Summit: Buenos Aires under security lock-down

The postponed Copa Libertadores final second leg between Argentine clubs River Plate and Boca Juniors will be played at Real Madrid's stadium on December the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) said on Thursday.

The match, originally scheduled to take place in Buenos Aires last Saturday but postponed after Boca players were hurt when River supporters attacked their coach, will take place in the Spanish capital on Sunday, December 9 at 8:30 pm (1930 GMT).

"The decision is that this game is going to be played in front of fans from both clubs in Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium," CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez said.

"(Madrid) is not only one of the safest cities in the world, the Santiago Bernabeu is an elite stadium that offers the highest standards of security and comfort for an encounter of this magnitude."

This year was the first time that Argentina's two biggest teams had met in the final of South America's equivalent of the Champions League and as usual away supporters were banned from both legs because of recurring fan violence.

The clubs drew the first leg 2-2 at Boca's ground in Buenos Aires and were due to play the second match across town at River's Monumental stadium last Saturday.

Boca players sustained injuries, however, when River fans attacked their coach as it approached the stadium and the game was first delayed until Sunday before being postponed indefinitely.

A CONMEBOL tribunal on Thursday also ruled against Boca's appeal to be awarded the match because of the violence but River were fined $400,000 and ordered to play their next two matches in continental competition behind closed doors.

Boca Juniors said it rejected the tribunal's decision and would appeal.

The violent incidents outside the Monumental were beamed around the world, embarrassing Argentina days before this weekend's G20 summit in Buenos Aires.

The task will now fall on Spanish authorities to ensure the game between two of the bitterest rivals in sport goes ahead peacefully at the 81,044-capacity Bernabeu.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Twitter that his government were ready to host the match and were already working with law enforcement authorities to ensure security for the event.

Qatar, Miami, and stadiums in Brazil and Colombia were among the other possible venues discussed for the biggest game in the 58-year history of the Libertadores Cup.

Spain's position as a footballing hotbed with excellent flight connections to Latin America swung the decision in Madrid's favour, however.

"The world is asking for an example of chivalry, sportsmanship and sporting values," Dominguez said.

"Football is not about violence."

The winners of the final will have little time to celebrate before representing CONMEBOL in the Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

The tournament kicks off three days after the rescheduled second leg on December 12 with the South American champions due to play their first match on December 18.

Argentina have asked interim coach Lionel Scaloni to stay in charge of the team until next year's Copa America, the head of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) said on Thursday.

Scaloni, who was appointed to succeed Jorge Sampaoli after a disappointing World Cup in Russia where the South Americans win only one game and were knocked out in last 16 by France, has not formally responded to the offer but is expected to accept.

"We've seen Scaloni's work and as a result we are offering him the chance to continue until the Copa America," AFA president Claudio Tapia told reporters.

"The project is evolving and the national team is gaining an identity and that's what we want."

The Copa America takes place in Brazil next June and July and after losing the last two finals of the competition on penalties Argentina will be looking to win their first major title since they lifted the same trophy in 1993.

Although he has little experience as a top coach, the 40-year-old Scaloni has lost only one of his six friendlies in charge, a 1-0 reverse against Brazil in Saudi Arabia.

Argentina conceded only one goal in the six games, winning four and drawing one.

South American football administrators Conmebol said on Tuesday that the postponed Copa Libertadores final second leg between fierce local rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors would be played outside Argentina.

Following a meeting with the two Argentine clubs' presidents in Asuncion, Conmebol said the match, to take place on "December 8 or 9," would be at an as yet undecided venue.

The original second-leg clash between the two Buenos Aires clubs at the weekend was postponed after Boca players were injured in an attack on their team bus by River fans with pepper spray, stones and sticks.

Conmebol president Alejandro Dominguez told reporters that "the final cannot be played in Argentina."

A Conmebol statement moments earlier said that due to the weekend "violence... that put players, officials and fans at risk... it would not be prudent to play the final in" Argentina.

The tie is delicately poised following a 2-2 draw at Boca's Bombonera home just over two weeks ago.

The second leg had to be postponed after Boca players suffered cuts from broken glass and from smoke inhalation when their bus was attacked by River fans on the way to the Monumental Stadium in the Argentine capital on Saturday.

It was originally postponed by 24 hours before Conmebol announced on Sunday that it was being suspended indefinitely ahead of Tuesday's meeting at the body's headquarters in the Paraguayan capital.

Boca's president Daniel Angelici petitioned the continent's governing body to award them the trophy, a move his River counterpart Rodolfo D'Onofrio branded "shameful."

Some potential final venues have already expressed an interest in hosting the derby dubbed a "superclasico", and the most important in Argentine club football history, as it pits the two most popular teams in the country in the continent's most prestigious final.

The group that runs the Atletico Mineiro stadium in Brazilian city Belo Horizonte offered on Tuesday to host the match.

That came a day after the Italian city of Genoa cited cultural links between the city and Italian immigrants to Argentina in the early 20th century as it suggested the Marassi stadium as a potential venue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Argentina from November 28 to December 2 to participate in the G20 meeting in Buenos Aires during which he will also meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and leaders of other participating nations, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Tuesday.

Modi will also highlight the risks posed by oil price volatility and raise the issue of combating terror financing and money laundering, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said.

One of the issues that will be discussed is strengthening of the WTO, he told reporters.

The meeting is being held amid the ongoing trade war between the US and China.

"Our interest is two-fold that the G20 issue is not hijacked by the single issue of trade, whether it is between two countries or otherwise.

"And secondly how we can constructively reform the WTO which serves India's interest and which is multilateral. That is going to be one of the focal points of this G20 meeting, or certainly of India's position at the G20 meeting," Gokhale said.

He said the G20 Summit must cover the entire gamut of economic issues, including the agricultural sector reform, the challenges climate change poses and health-care issues faced by the world.

The theme of the G20 Summit is 'Building Consensus for Fair and Sustainable Development'.

Detailing Modi's visit, Gokhale said the prime minister will make a lead intervention in a session on 'Putting People First' that is essentially on the global economy.

The second session is on talks of building consensus which will deal with trade, finance, taxation, sustainable development and climate change.

The third session will be on 'Embracing Opportunities' and these are related to energy infrastructure, sustainable food security. The prime minister will be making subsidiary interventions in the other two sessions, Gokhale said.

There will be a number of bilateral meetings during the visit.

The foreign secretary said Modi will also meet United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Mauricio Macri, the President of Argentina; Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

He will also meet the prime ministers of Spain, Jamaica, the Netherlands and the president of the European Union and European Council.

A bilateral meeting between Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron is also being worked out, Gokhale said.

The prime minister, he said, will also speak on his flag programmes like the Jan Dhan Yojana, the Mudra scheme, Ayushman Bharat, soil health card in the G20 Summit.

The prime minister will also make a pitch to countries who are not in the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn to join the International Solar Alliance.

Gokhale said the issue of disaster relief infrastructure will also be discussed.

There is a space of major countries, particularly the G20 nations, to have some kind of informal arrangement where they can share the capacity building, technical know-how with countries hit by disasters, Gokhale said.

India has shared a concept paper with the G20 countries and it has received a positive response, he added.

PM Modi to visit Argentina from Nov 28-Dec 2 for G20 Summit; to meet Chinese President twice

Indian hockey team geared up for the men's World Cup with a 5-0 thrashing of reigning Olympic champions Argentina in its first warm-up match here on Friday.

Harmanpreet Singh, Lalit Upadhyay, Dilpreet, Nilakanta Sharma and Hardik Singh were the scorers for the Indian team, while Argentina drew a blank.

The first and third goals were penalty corner conversions, while the rest were field goals.

"I think we played well in patches. I'm happy we scored goals, the two PC goals and the field goals. But we broke the structure and Argentina took control which is not acceptable but the boys have understood," India coach Harendra Singh said after the match.

"For any tournament, it is important to start on a good note and I should give compliment to my boys. Practice matches give you confidence. We tried couple of things and I am happy, especially the way midfielder created the opportunities. We always look for striker to get us the goal but today midfielders created the goals."

"If you see the match sheet, the players who have stepped out for the first time for the world cup they have scored and it gives them a lot of confidence because they scored against the Olympic champions," he said.

The coach said Argentina is recovering from jetlag and remains a strong team.

We always look for striker to get us the goal but today midfielders created the goals." The coach said Argentina is recovering from jetlag and remains a strong team. "I think they still haven't recovered from the long flight and we shouldn't write them off." India will face Spain next in their second and last warm-up match on Sunday.

Hockey World Cup: India beat Argentina 5-0 in warm-up

Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona said his country's national team was going nowhere under the guidance of current caretaker head coach Lionel Scaloni.

Maradona, who has coached Mexican second-division club Dorados de Sonora to the semi-finals of the Apertura 2018 championship, the first of the 2018-2019 season, lamented that one Argentine manager he respects, Gerardo Martino, is expected to be signed by Mexico's national team.

Martino has led Atlanta United to the semi-finals of the 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs but has opted not to return to that team next season.

"I played with 'Tata' Martino at (Argentine club) Newell's (Old Boys), and he's a great person. They're now talking about him in Mexico, and we Argentines have this kid Lionel Scaloni. It's not his fault he's there, but the problem is he thinks he's a coach and wants to go to the World Cup. He can go, but to the motorcycle World Cup, not the soccer one," he said.

Maradona said it was particularly frustrating considering that Argentina has a lot of astute coaching minds.

"It's not easy to lead Mexico. Martino's going to have it tough. But in Argentina, we're so bad off that we're flailing around even though we have Cesar Luis Menotti, Ricardo Gareca, Gustavo Alfaro, Marcelo Gallardo, Guillermo Barros Schelotto. We have a bunch of good coaches and there Scaloni is," he said.

Referring to Dorados' 2-0 home victory over Juarez in Wednesday night's first leg of their semi-final series, Maradona said he was grateful that his team was one step closer to the Apertura title.

"Juarez and Dorados know each other well. We forced them to attack us in the second half and they weren't able to do it. On Saturday we'll play them based on the flaws we've seen. (Sinaloa assistant coach) Luis Islas and I have analyzed our opponent's strengths and weaknesses," he said.

An early goal from Mauro Icardi and a late strike from Paulo Dybala gave Argentina their second win in a row with a 2-0 victory over Mexico in a lukewarm friendly in Mendoza on Tuesday.

With two minutes gone Icardi, the Inter Milan striker controversially left out of Argentina's World Cup squad, beat two Mexican defenders on his right foot before transferring the ball to his left and whipping it past the keeper.

Dybala doubled the lead three minutes from time when he finished off a sweeping counter attack beautifully set up by Giovanni Simeone.

Mexico had more of the possession but Argentina were well worthy of a victory that came four days after their 2-0 win in Cordoba in the first match of the double header.

The best chance for the visitors fell to Jesus Gallardo midway through the second half but his point-blank header was well saved by substitute keeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

The result takes interim coach Lionel Scaloni's record since the World Cup to four wins, one draw and one defeat. His team have conceded just the one goal in the 1-0 loss to Brazil last month.

Mexico, meanwhile, fell to their fifth defeat in six games since they tumbled out of the World Cup at the last 16 stage with a loss to Brazil.

Teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe told AFP on Thursday that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi remain football's greatest players but that his own World Cup heroics could help crown him the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner.

Mbappe, 19, inspired France to World Cup victory in Russia with four goals. One of those came in the 4-2 final victory over Croatia as he became just the second teenager after Pele in 1958 to score in the championship match.

He was also voted Young Player of the tournament and has since become Ligue 1's leading scorer with 11 goals as Paris Saint-Germain run away with the French title.

Messi and Ronaldo have won the last 10 Ballon d'Or awards and Mbappe believes that they are still the sport's top A-listers.

"Nobody is doing better at the moment and we can't say it's the end of their era because it will only end when somebody else does better than them," Mbappe told AFP.

However, the young striker added: "I don't think one of them will win the Ballon d'Or this year because it was a World Cup year, and the World Cup takes precedence." While Mbappe thrived at the World Cup, Messi's Argentina and Ronaldo's Portugal bowed out in the last 16.

"But if you take the player in the purest form, there's nobody better yet. This year they were again the best two," added Mbappe.

"Messi finished the best goalscorer in Europe; Ronaldo was the top scorer in the Champions League." Mbappe was speaking to AFP on Thursday at an event organised by watchmakers Hublot, one of his leading sponsors. The last French player to win the coveted Ballon d'Or was Zinedine Zidane after the national team's 1998 World Cup victory.

"Frankly, I hope so (win the Ballon d'Or). We achieved something big. It would not be unjust because that is a strong word, but it would be a shame if a Frenchman does not win it.

"We made history and it would be nice to be rewarded." Croatia's Luka Modric, voted Best Player of the World Cup, remains favourite for the Ballon d'Or.

However, Modric is 14 years Mbappe's senior so the young Frenchman has time on his side.

He will also have time and opportunity to complete his journey from the tough streets of the down-at-heel Paris suburb of Bondy to a life of super-riches.

'Play to win'

Mbappe, who will turn 20 just before Christmas, signed for PSG from Monaco for 180 million euros in 2017 in the second most expensive transfer of all time -- behind PSG teammate Neymar who cost the French champions 222 million euros.

Off the field, he seems destined to match Ronaldo in the commercial stakes. Will his initials "KM" match the brand power of Ronaldo's "CR7"?

"I don't know because CR7 is something big, he has managed to build his brand and become international," said Mbappe.

"Mine is not at this stage yet, I'm changing little by little." That development into the public consciousness saw him dominate the front page of Time magazine in October with the American publisher breathlessly showcasing the teenage as "the future of football".

Mbappe said that he will not be satisfied with winning just one World Cup. When asked what he wants to win next, he said: "All the World Cups that I can play.

"I play to win; if I play four World Cups then I want to win four. We go step by step. I have already won one. You have to prepare and win with your club and with the national team also.

"There are short-term goals before thinking about the 2022 World Cup. But the aim always is to win."

On being tipped to be the next true superstar once Messi and Ronaldo have retired, Mpabbe added: "I cannot control everything that is done and said.

"There is not just the pitch but everything around it must also be managed. It's not easy but I'm learning, I'm still learning. I have people around me who help me overcome the challenges one after the other."

Kylian Mbappe: Ronaldo, Messi still best but won't win Ballon d'Or

Argentine police fired rubber bullets, tear gas and waters cannon at protesters who marched on Wednesday in front of Congress against the government's 2019 budget bill, which contains steep spending cuts aimed at erasing the country's fiscal deficit.

Thousands of activists gathered, led by teachers, social organizations and leftist groups opposed to President Mauricio Macri's austerity measures. Small clusters of protesters hurled rocks, sticks and trash at police who shot rubber bullets and used metal barriers to control the crowd.

Some protesters were seen hurling tear gas canisters back at police lines. Authorities quickly reinforced with a large group of motorcycle police who descended on the crowd.

The same riot control measures were used to push back protesters late last year when Congress approved cuts to Argentina's pension system.

Tensions are rising in Latin America's No. 3 economy, which is projected by the budget bill to contract 2.4 percent this year and 0.5 percent in 2019. Public utility subsidy cuts are forcing home heating and electricity bills higher, fueling inflation expected by the government at 42 percent this year.

The legislators began discussing the budget in a plenary session shortly before noon. Macri needs the budget to pass to maintain his economic adjustment plan and continue efforts to turn Argentina's recession-hit economy around.

As police moved to stem the violence, lawmakers inside the capitol building squabbled and argued loudly over sticking points, at times disregarding calls for order.

The budget features sharp reductions in government spending and tax increases aimed at cutting the primary fiscal deficit from a projected 2.7 percent of gross domestic product this year to zero in 2019.

Macri has committed to balancing the budget at the behest of the International Monetary Fund, which signed a $57 billion standby financing agreement with the government earlier this year. Macri went to the fund for help after market jitters about the country's increasing debt load caused a slide in the peso.

The local currency is down about 50 percent so far this year. On Wednesday it weakened 1.35 percent 37.15 to the greenback. Argentina is in the emerging markets spotlight as it prepares to host a meeting of the G20 at the end of November.

Analysts expect the budget to pass, but are cautious about the government's ability to implement austerity measures. Some economists also fear the government may relax austerity measures ahead of the 2019 presidential election for political gain.

Because Macri's "Cambiemos," or "Let's Change" party, does not hold a majority in either chamber of Congress, it negotiated with some provinces to minimize the social impact of budget cuts in exchange for votes needed to pass the bill.

"We have important support, based on an agreement signed by the president with provincial governments to ratify several measures, among them the approval of the national budget," Congressman Luciano Laspina, who is affiliated with Macri's political party, said in an interview with local station Radio Mitre.

"Messi's Argentina absence a pity for football", "Messi needs to break, to breathe", "Messi to announce retirement from Argentina" and many other stories with similar headlines on several news channels and papers went viral after Lionel decided to not play for the country for some time.

The Barcelona forward took an indefinite break from the Argentina squad after captaining them to the round of 16 in this summer's FIFA World Cup in Russia, a step which startled the football world and Messi's fans.

But why? The question still exists.

The new coach Claudio Tapia, who took the charge after Jorge Sampaoli stepped down, and Argentine Football Association decided to not put any pressure on Messi to return to the fold.

Messi, who has scored 65 goals in 128 appearances since his debut with Argentina in August 2005, was under immense pressure to win his first major trophy with Argentina.

He carried the hope of 44 million people and it was much evident as he lined up before kick-off in their crucial World Cup match against Croatia, with the captain rubbing his forehead with his eyes closed.

Despite competing in four World Cups and four Copa Americas, the Barcelona forward has not won a major trophy for his country. He even decided to retire from international football in June 2016 but reversed his decision two months later.

Same is the scenario now. Messi again reversed his decision to give his country what it deserves but the focus on his return is such that the team can't function without him. And, this is exactly what has to end.

Messi, who will be 35 by then, supposedly enter the next FIFA Wolrd Cup in Qatar, should enter the ground with a team that is capable to win the game. His presence should be a cherry on the top of a cake.

When playing for his country, Messi's unparalleled pressure and criticism go to a level difficult for any player to withstand.

He needs to be accompanied with several other talented players from all over the world to win a title because football is not a one man's game, it's a team game and the entire team has to be on their toes to help Messi play his potential and score.

Instead of raising questions on Messi's calibre, it's important to raise the standard of the team. However, it is also important for him to play with Argentina players in order to understand the game better.

'Absent' Lionel Messi aims to build Argentina football's present

A stoppage-time goal from Miranda gave Brazil a 1-0 win over South American rivals Argentina in a foul-strewn friendly in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

The central defender rose at the near post to beat Argentina keeper Sergio Romero to a Neymar corner and head home the winner, deciding a game that was set to go to penalties to determine a winner.

"Scoring a goal against Argentina is always gratifying and always exciting," Miranda said.

Argentina are one of only two teams to have beaten Brazil since Tite took over as coach in 2016, but without Lionel Messi, who is taking a sabbatical from international football, they rarely troubled their neighbours in a derby match dubbed the Superclasico.

The game was played in the heat of the King Abdullah Sports City and the conditions contributed to a stop-start encounter that included 35 fouls, 21 of them awarded to Brazil.

Miranda should have put Brazil 1-0 up in the 28th minute when a Casemiro cross fell to him just metres from goal, but his scuffed shot was blocked on the line by Nicolas Otamendi.

Paulo Dybala went close with a swerving free kick for Argentina from just outside the box a minute later and Leandro Paredes watched a long-range effort drift just wide early in the second half.

Argentina improved considerably after the break, but Brazil still had the better chances, with Romero parrying away a fierce volley from Arthur after 70 minutes and Casemiro almost grabbing the winner with seven minutes left only to see his deflected free-kick curl wide.

"The team felt tired in the second half but I think we dominated our opponents, we played well and we got the goal at the end," said Brazil's Filipe Luis.

"Obviously our team is better than theirs, we have maintained the same squad for years and they are in the process of renewal, but you don't notice that so much in a clasico, what you do notice is their fight," the Atletico Madrid defender added. "But I think we deserved to win."

The defeat was the first in four games for Lionel Scaloni, the interim coach who replaced Jorge Sampaoli after the Russia World Cup.

It extends Brazil's run to four wins in four games since they were knocked out the World Cup in the quarter-finals by Belgium.

Miranda heads late winner as Brazil beat Argentina 1-0 in friendly

Brazil's Neymar spoke about his former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi's absence from the Argentina squad as the South American soccer rivals Argentina and Brazil are gearing up for Tuesday's friendly match at Jeddah's King Abdullah Sports City.

Argentina's missing captain Lionel Messi and three other stars: Sergio Aguero, Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain, Argentina is trying out different combinations.

He said Messi's absence is not good for the football lovers. "I think it is bad for football lovers to not have (Lionel) Messi, a great legend, out of a game like this," said Neymar.

He then added, "But for us is good (smiles). But I insist to reinforce the quality of Argentina, the quality of players that are there today."

"We know it will be a very tough match. We must do our part and a derby like this is always great to play."

Lionel Messi "is not a leader", said Diego Maradona of the current Argentina talisman in an interview in Mexico.

"It's useless to try and make a leader out of someone who goes to the bathroom 20 times before a game," Maradona said on Fox Sports.

"Before speaking to the coach and players he will be on the PlayStation. Then, on the field, he wants to be the leader," Maradona said as he answered questions in a stumbling voice, sometimes seeming to contradict himself.

"He is the best in the world along with Cristiano [Ronaldo]," Maradona said. "But he's not a leader."

Maradona, who led Argentina to victory in the 1986, said Messi, who was again unable to emulate that feat in Russia this summer was expected to be "the saviour of the fatherland."

"Let's stop making a god out of Messi. Messi is Messi for Barcelona, but playing in an Argentina shirt he is another Messi."

Maradona, who is in Mexico coaching second-division Sinaloa, said that if he was Argentina coach he would "not call on Messi" before adding "never say never."

"You have to take the leadership away for him to be the Messi we want him to be," Maradona said.

Messi, who is 31, has not played for Argentina in three low-key friendlies since a 4-3 loss to eventual champions France in the first knock-out round at the World Cup, but has not officially retired from the national team.

Argentina easily overcame Iraq 4-0 in a friendly in Saudi Arabia on Thursday with three players scoring their first international goals for the twice world champions while German Pezzella also found the net.

Argentina were without Lionel Messi, who is taking a sabbatical from international football, and fielded a new-look side that included one player making his debut and two others their first-ever starts.

The new boys were rarely troubled by an Iraq side that defended in numbers, but showed little threat in their opponent's half.

Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez, playing only his second game for the national side, put Argentina ahead after 15 minutes with a superb header from a Marcos Acuna cross.

Roberto Pereyra doubled their lead eight minutes into the second half when he took a pass on the edge of the box and swept a right-foot shot home after the Iraq defence opened up in front of him.

Defender Pezzella grabbed a third eight minutes from fulltime when he headed home after a flick-on at a corner and Franco Cervi added a fourth in injury time after a surging run from midfield.

"It wasn't easy opening them up but we managed it and we were patient and managed to score more goals," Pezzella said.

The win took Argentina's unbeaten run under interim coach Lionel Scaloni to three games.

Since taking over from Jorge Sampaoli after Argentina's poor performance at the World Cup in Russia, the South Americans have beaten Guatemala and Iraq and drawn with Colombia, without conceding a goal.

Argentina's next game is on Tuesday against arch-rivals Brazil in Jeddah.

Argentina football legend Diego Maradona, who is known for making controversial statements, on Tuesday suggested Lionel Messi to hang his boots.

Maradona reckoned that the Argentina striker should not bother coming back as he always gets the blame for everything.

When asked Maradona to clarify his statement, he said, "Yes, because if the U15 team loses, it’s Messi’s fault, an Argentina fixture messes up the domestic calendar for Racing against Boca and Messi is to blame. I’d say-Don’t play anymore, it’s crazy, but let’s see if they’re (AFA) brave,” Maradona said as per an online portal.

Messi, who has scored 65 goals in 128 appearances since making his debut with Argentina in August 2005, has taken an indefinite leave of absence from international football.

When asked to comment, the retired striker, who coached Messi and Argentina from 2008 to 2010, was of the view that Messi should have broken his silence, post their elimination from the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

“Yes, I wish he had sent us all to shit because he’s not to blame for not being world champion. Okay, we had all the hopes in him, but when you go to the racecourse you have the hope that your horse will win and it finishes eighth,” he said.

On the professional front, Maradona has recently been appointed as the coach of the Mexican professional football club, Dorados de Sinaloa.

Diego Maradona tells Lionel Messi to quit Argentina team

As the Latin America's third-largest economy Argentina faces recession, the chief of the Central bank of the country Luis Caputo resigned from his post on Tuesday.

The resignation comes in the wake of the massive protests led by the people of the country against inflation and devaluation of the currency.

Argentina's currency peso slipped 0.13 per cent to close at 37.33 to the dollar on Monday.

The currency has lost around 50 per cent of its value against the dollar this year, amid wider jitters in emerging markets.

Thousands of people thronged the streets of Buenos Aires on Monday protesting Argentine President Mauricio Macri's policies, a day before a nationwide 24-hour strike called by unions, which have threatened to shut down all public transit in the city.

The central bank said it auctioned $112 million out of $250 million offered at an average price of 37.3172 per dollar.

Argentina's central bank has hiked interest rates to 60 per cent. Fueled by the devaluation, inflation is forecast to end the year at over 40 per cent, pushing up poverty levels in Latin America's third-largest economy.

A drought this year weakened Argentina's grain exports and threw Latin America's third-largest economy into recession.

Meanwhile, Argentine President Mauricio Macri said on Monday his country was close to a deal with the International Monetary Fund to bolster a $50 billion credit line, while a government source said $3-$5 billion in additional funds could be announced this week.

Argentina would receive additional support from the IMF but he declined to provide further details as talks were still in progress.

Argentina approached the IMF last month to modify the details of the $50 billion standby agreement signed in June after concerns over its ability to pay its debts - most of which are in dollars - sparked a renewed run on the peso currency.

The extra funds would cover most of Argentina's financing needs through 2019, except for $2.5 billion that would need to be raised in domestic markets next year, according to a recent report from the Treasury Ministry.

The chance to see Lionel Messi up close unleashed a certain madness Monday as the Argentine national team held their first open practice for the 2018 World Cup in this town roughly 60 km (30 mi) southeast of Moscow.

Some 500 people packed the stands at the Bronnitsy training center on the banks of a river with sandy shores and just a short distance from a traditional Russian Orthodox Church with gilded domes.

The fans never stopped chanting the name of FC Barcelona's star player, while waving both Argentine flags and Barca banners.

"Argentina will win the World Cup. It doesn't matter that it's not the best team, it has Messi. With him, all is possible," Dima, a 10-year-old boy wearing a replica Barcelona shirt with the striker's name, told EFE.

Added to the Argentina fans were more than 200 reporters covering the training session.

Messi decided to thank the fans for their support and their patience by signing autographs and having photos taken with his countless admirers after the practice.

While it wasn't sure that Paulo Dybala would make the starting lineup for the World Cup, the Juventus striker also attracted a lot of attention among the fans and, though Javier Mascherano has opted for a golden retirement in China, he was also very much sought after.

Despite having a tough time qualifying for the World Cup and thanks to a sterling performance by Messi, the Argentines are once again one of the big favorites to win the championship.

Argentina, which lost 1-0 in the 2014 World Cup against Germany, will debut on June 17 against Iceland before going up against Croatia on June 21 and will close the group stage against Nigeria on June 26.
