I've heard that there are some legalities being worked out so that it is not misused in the future. AI is depersonlising art. After a point, people will themselves know that it is not a good choice."
Oscar-winning composer, AR Rahman has revealed that the King of Pop, Michael Jackson almost sang for Shankar's film Enthiran which costarred Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai in the lead.

Rahman recently took part in a fan meet and greet event where he spoke about his meeting with the legendary pop star months before his death.

In a video by Free Malaysia Today, Rahman revealed how he met Jackson shortly after winning an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire.

Rahman revealed he was in Los Angeles, USA, in early 2009 when he met someone who managed Michael.

"I asked if I could meet him. An email was sent out but there was no response for a week. Then, I got nominated for the Oscars (for Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire). Michael’s team said he wanted to meet me. I said, I don’t want to meet him now. I’ll meet him when I’ve won an Oscar,” said Rahman.

When he did win the Oscar, he explained the feeling as ‘top of the world’. “I met him at a home in LA the day after I won it. He was very kind, we spoke about music and world peace. He said, why don’t we do the next We Are The World, introduced me to his kids. He even showed me how he dances from the heart,” Rahman said.

Rahman eventually came back to India and told filmmaker Shankar about his meeting Micheal. Shankar asked the composer if the pop legend would sing for Enthiran.

“Shankar sir asked me if he would sing for the film. I said, wow, will he sing a Tamil song? I asked. He said, whatever you say, we’ll do it together.

The plan never materialised as Michael died in June of that year. “He was sick at that time,” said Rahman.

The OST of Enthiran featured no international singers, but it went on to be a massive success. The sequel of the film 2.0, featured music by Rahman as well and was released in 2018. The film featured Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson.

Shankar on Rahman’s absence in Indian 2

Shankar and Rahman have worked on numerous projects together, including the 1996 Kamal Haasan-starrer Indian. The sequel, Indian 2, however, features music by Anirudh Ravichander. When asked about it at a recent press meeting, Shankar said that he approached Anirudh because Rahman was busy.

“When we started work on Indian 2, AR Rahman was already working on the BGM of 2.0 and I needed the songs soon. I didn’t want to overburden him with Indian 2 and I also liked Anirudh’s music. His music was really popular and I thought, why not sign him on,” explained Shankar.

And I felt that here is a community which were violent, and not because they wanted to be violent. And they’ve completely moved away. [Now] they have a minister for music.
Earlier this week, Indian filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma claimed that the iconic song ''Jai Ho'' is the composition of singer Sukhwinder Singh, not AR Rahman.

In an interview with Hindustan Times newspaper, Sukhwinder said the song was composed by Rahman, adding that Varma might have got wrong information.

I too said 'thode changes kar do' [change it a bit], but Subhash ji said poora gaana hi alag chahiye [want an entirely different song]. Then he left, Rahman left. I was sad.''

The singer went on to say, ''I requested Gulzar sahab to stay back for 10-15 minutes. He asked why, to which I replied he has written it so well, let me try singing. Naachte kudte maine gaa diya [I sang it joyfully]. It was the same Jai Ho you listen to today."

He said he sent it across to Rahman, who in turn made Danny Boyle, director of Slumdog Millionaire, listen to it.

AR Rahman is bringing back legendary singers from the dead. With a little bit of help from AI (Artificial Intelligence), Rahman will be using the voice of two late singers- Bamba Bakya and Shahul Hameed- for Rajinikanth's next Lal Salaam. Rahman has revealed that he sought permission from the late singers' families and has sent remuneration for the same.

Lal Salaam has been directed by Aishwarya Rajinikanth and will release in theatres on February 9.

Rahman is known for being experimental and this is perhaps the first time that an Indian musician has used AI to recreate the voices of two late legends for a film. Using AI voice models, he brought the late Bamba Bakya and Shahul Hameed's voices back to life.

Both Bamba Bakya and Shahul Hameed worked closely with AR Rahman, and they churned out many superhit numbers. While Shahul Hameed died in a car crash in 1997, Bamba Bakya died of cardiac arrest in 2022.
Rahman's decision, though, has left the internet divided. While many appreciated Rahman seeking the permission of singers's families, others termed it as 'unethical'.

While Shahul Hameed died in a car crash in 1997, Bamba Bakya died of cardiac arrest in 2022. Rahman's decision, though, has left the internet divided. While many appreciated Rahman seeking the permission of singers's families, others termed it as 'unethical'. As an fanboy for three decades now, though appreciating your ready synergy with any futuristic tech and innovations, this feels a tad odd and unconvincing, sir. Most people these days, don’t even have much stronger bonds with their families even when they’re alive. In that case,… — Aravind (@aravindkumarsd) January 29, 2024 × Haters will hate.
Renowned music maestro, AR Rahman, made a humble yet significant entrance at the Nagore Dargah in Nagapattinam by arriving in an auto-rickshaw to partake in the revered Kanduri festival. Sporting a maroon kurta, the Oscar-winning musician joined the festivities of the 14-day Kandhuri Festival, also recognised as the Nagore Dargah Festival. This annual celebration spans from the first to the fourteenth day of Hazrath Syed Shahul Hamid's death anniversary, observed during the Islamic month of Jamathul Aagir.

The festival commemorates the legacy of Hazrath Syed Shahul Hamid, who was a revered 13th-generation descendant of Sufi Saint Muhiyudin Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani. He achieved wider recognition for treating the physical illness of Thanjavur's 16th-century Hindu king Achuthappa Nayak. This historic significance allures the peculiar participation of Hindu devotees during the Kandhuri Festival.

Traditionally, the festival starts with the hoisting of a sacred flag, followed by a procession carrying it to the Nagore Dargah. Subsequent days involve Quran readings, prayers, and the display of the Light of Allah at the Dargah, attracting devout followers.

On the eighth day, the Kandhuri Festival's fireworks display is one of its many attractions. The fireworks have two purposes - first, to enhance the festive atmosphere, and second, to represent how truth drives away falsehood.

On the ninth day of Jamaidul Akhir, the Fakirs visit the site of Hazarath Mohsin meditation site called the "Peer Mandapam". On this occasion, the devotees start a holy fast for the next three days.

On the tenth day, a parade-like chariot ride carrying sandalwood paste is organised. The Rawla Shariff and the Great Saint's tomb get anointed with the auspicious paste.

'Pippa' makers offer 'sincere apologies' after outrage, say 'our intent was to pay homage' | WION

A song in the war film Pippa, composed by Oscar winner AR Rahman has irked many in India as well as Bangladesh. The song in question is an iconic one - 'Karar Oi Louho Kopat'- written by legendary Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. The song for decades has been considered as a protest song which talks of breaking the iron shackles and revolting against oppression. It is a song that most Bengalis in the sub-continent have grown up listening to. Rahman's version keeps the lyrics of the original song mostly but reimagines it giving it a new tune. Many have argued that it does not sound anything like the original, robbing of the essence of the song.

The song was shared on Rahman's YouTube channel and posts have commented that the new version of the song completely destroys the original tune- which was given by Nazrul Islam himself.

“A powerful song based on strong revolutionary messages to the younger generations got randomly transformed into a light-hearted romantic type melody. The lyrics seemed to be haphazardly scattered into some random pop chord progression. There is not even a central structure of the melody. Why AR Rahman? Why butcher such a wonderful phenomenal song? Why deform works of the great Kazi Nazrul Islam?,” wrote a YouTube user.

“Rahman Sir, you can't play with our emotions by destroying the very soul of such an immortal creation,” said another.

“This Nazrul Geeti is a masterpiece itself and does not need any modifications from any musician in the world for it to sound better. Being a musician yourself you shouldn’t have disrespected an artist of this calibre,” added a third.

“Mr. Rahman, this song has a different place in every Bengali's heart. It is very disturbing to listen to my favourite musician destroying Kazi Nazrul's song which till date gives goosebumps to every Bengali youth. Probably you have not listened to the original song,” commented another user.

Kazi Nazrul Islam's family reacts

Speaking to Time Of India, the late poet's kin Anirban Kazi said, "We could not fathom that an artist like Rahman could be so insensitive and murder the song like this. As a protest, I don't want our family's name in 'special thanks' in the film's credit line. That was one of the clauses in our agreement with the production house. I have shared my reservations with the production house."

About the song 'Karar Oi Louho Kopat'

Kazi Nazrul had written the song in June 1922. According to Anirban Kazi, it was a request by freedom fighter Chittaranjan Das's wife to the poet. "When Chittaranjan Das was imprisoned in 1922, his wife Basanti Devi had asked my grandfather to pen something. He wrote, 'Karar Oi Louha Kapat' to honour that request. It was recorded in June 1949, sung by Girin Chakraborty," said Anirban.

The original tune is more of a marching song while Rahman's song is softer with mellow tunes.

AR Rahman slammed for his rendition of poet Nazrul Islam's iconic song on revolution

Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has filed a Rs 10 Crore (Rs 100 million) defamation case against the Association of Surgeons India (ASICON) and urged them to issue a public apology in connection with a 2018 concert that never happened. Rahman has accused ASICON of defaming him.

ASICON had recently filed a complaint against Rahman at the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office for not refunding the amount of Rs 29.50 lakh which Rahman had received as advance fee to perform at the Annual National Conference of Associations of Surgeons of India in 2018 in Chennai.
