'Gangs Of Waaseypur': The only Indian film to feature in The Guardian's top 100 films of 21st century

<p>Several members of Citizen Speak India including eminent personalities like Aparna Sen and Anjum Katyal strongly condemned the `threats of violence` which forced the director Anurag Kashyap to quit the social media platform, Twitter.</p>

<p>A press release which consisted of 28 signatories expressed unanimity of the members on the subject and also raised concerns against the threats received by Kashyap.</p>

<p>"This is a matter that demands immediate attention. Free speech is the cornerstone of democracy, and Kashyap is one among many today who face the risk of violence for merely expressing an opinion on a public platform," release read.</p>

<p>"This culture of violence and intolerance is spreading dangerously in our society! It has to be resisted by us all. <p>Savi, who started his Bollywood career with Anurag`s films, currently works for 12 hours a day as a security guard.</p>

<p>"It is a 12-hour tough job. It`s a mechanical job. I don`t even have money to buy bus tickets. To watch a film in theatre is like a dream now. My financial condition is not good," he said in the viral video that was shared on Youtube by a website.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Despite financial crisis and working as a security guard, he hopes to "have a good bank balance and bag roles in films soon".&nbsp;<br />

"I am hopeful they (producers and directors) will give me a chance. I know they will not say no. I have always received a positive response from them. They are waiting for me, mai aa raha hoon (I am coming back)," he concluded.&nbsp;</p>

The 2014 Bollywood hit film 'Queen' did rule everyone's hearts and is now all set to spread the theme to the South of India alibi through remakes. Producer Manu Kumaran of Mediente Films International Pvt Ltd has bought the rights of Kangana starrer, 'Queen,' and 'remade' it in four Indian languages - Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. The teasers of all the four films were released simultaneously a few days back. The Kannada remake of 'Queen' is titled as ‘Butterfly’, directed by Ramesh Aravind, dialogues by Mamta Sagar & Ramesh Aravind and stars Parul Yadav. The film is presented by Taizoon Khorakiwala, produced by Manu Kumaran, co-produced by Parul Yadav under the banner of Mediente Films. The Tamil remake of 'Queen' is titled as ‘Paris Paris’, directed by Ramesh Aravind, dialogues by Thamizhachi Thangapandian and stars Kajal Aggarwal. Kangana Ranaut's 'Queen' gets remade in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam; watch the teasers

<p>When American actress Alysa Milano urged women across the world to speak up against sexual violence in 2017, the #MeToo hashtag became viral almost instantly. Milano tweeted, "If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet," and scores of women across the world shared personal experiences on social media leading to the beginning of global #MeToo movement. One of the first names to have come out in the movement was Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein as multiple women accused him of rape, sexual harassment, and misconduct.&nbsp;These women also included prominent names from the cinema including Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Anniston, Angelina Jolie and others.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Soon enough, the movement caught everyone's attention in other countries. While France, Israel, Canada, Italy were the first few countries to join America in the movement, closer home in India, the movement took nearly 8 months to gain momentum. There were, of course, the initial reports that were reported on social media but it was only when former Miss India and actress Tanushree Dutta <a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/tanushree-dutta-accuses-nana-patekar-harassing-her-set-10-years-ago-167771">accused Nana Patekar of sexual misconduct on a film set in 2008, did the movement</a> get its much-needed boost in India. In an interview to a news channel, Tanushree recalled how Patekar <a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/watch-footage-attack-tanushree-duttas-car-sets-hork-ok-pleassss-goes-viral-168700">had sexually harassed her on the sets of 'Horn Ok </a><a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/watch-footage-attack-tanushree-duttas-car-sets-hork-ok-pleassss-goes-viral-168700">Pleasss</a><a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/watch-footage-attack-tanushree-duttas-car-sets-hork-ok-pleassss-goes-viral-168700">'. </a>She even accused the film’s choreographer Ganesh Acharya, director Rakesh Sarang and producer Samee Siddique of being mute spectators on the set and allying with Patekar when the incident took place. Tanushree was to do a special song in the film and she eventually left the set and was replaced by Rakhi Sawant.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Incidentally, Dutta had raised objection a decade back, when the incident had actually taken place but the Police and the film body had not taken any action against Patekar. Tanushree's tell-all incident not only started a conversation on sexual harassment in Bollywood but also encouraged other women in the film industry to speak up.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an emotional post on Facebook, TV producer Vinta Nanda accused actor <a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/sanskaari-alok-nath-accused-of-rape-by-woman-filmmaker-170341">Alok Nath of brutally raping her.</a> The incident took place 20 years ago, and Vinta in a press conference later said how Tanushree Dutta's case had given her the confidence to speak up, many years after the incident. Several other actresses including TV actress Sandhya Mridul and <a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/after-sandhya-mridul-now-actor-deepika-amin-accuses-alok-nath-of-harassment-170792">Dipika Amin</a> corroborated Nanda's story with their own personal encounters with Nath. Both accused him of sexual harassment on different occasions on film sets. Nath did not react to the accusations but filed a defamation case against Nanda.&nbsp;</p>

A <a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment-news/kangana-ranaut-accuses-queen-director-vikas-bahl-of-sexual-misconduct-169920">former employee had accused Bahl</a> of misconduct in 2016 but the case finally came into light after Tanushree Dutta's case got widely reported in September this year. <p>As prominent names from the entertainment industry came out, there was the natural uproar. The need of the hour was to disengage with those who had been serial offenders.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Amid the #MeToo drama, several producers and actors to a stand publicly and disassociated themselves from those who had been accused. Vikas Bahl was asked to finish the patchwork of 'Super 30' a film that he was directing but his name <a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/vikas-bahl-may-not-be-credited-for-his-work-in-super-30-170450">would not be credited for direction</a>. Aamir Khan and<a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/housefull-4-sajid-khan-steps-down-as-director-akshay-kumar-says-wont-work-with-proven-offenders-171068"> Akshay Kumar </a>both decided to disassociate themselves with Subhash Kapoor and Sajid Khan respectively. Both the actors were working on projects that were being helmed by these men.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Malik had to step down from his role as a judge on the reality show 'Indian Idol' and Sajid Khan was asked to step down as the director of 'Housefull 4' which incidentally also had Nana Patekar in the cast. He was eventually replaced by Rana Daggubati.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mumbai film festival (MAMI) decided to drop three films — AIB’s Chintu Ka Birthday, Anurag Kashyap’s 'Bebaak' and Rajat Kapoor’s 'Kadakh' — from its lineup. OTT platforms Amazon Prime Video and Hotstar too cancelled shows that they had worked on with AIB and Chakraborty.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, 11 women Indian filmmakers joined hands to support the movement and pledged to not work with those men who had been accused in the movement. Alankrita Shrivastava, Gauri Shinde, Kiran Rao, Konkona Sen Sharma, Meghna Guizar, Nandita Das, Nitya Mehra, Reema Kagti, Ruchi Narain, Shonali Bose and Zoya Akhtar were some of the women who decided to take a stand.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>The way forward</strong></p>

<p>While a lot of the companies- not just in entertainment industries, but outside of it as well- have pledged to create a more safe workplace environment, perpetrators are still at large. Some who were sent on forced leave as names came out have now resumed work in their workplace. Many of those accused in the entertainment industry continue to get work. A lot have argued that there is also a need for thorough investigations in each of the case so as an unbiased judgment can be made as a lot of careers are at stake. Insiders, though the state, that only a fraction of names has been reported in the #MeToo movement and <a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/imran-khan-on-vikas-bahl-everyone-in-the-film-industry-knew-have-heard-stories-from-three-other-actresses-170614">that lot of names, prominent ones, will never get reported thereby limiting the impact of the movement in the country.</a> It is also to be seen whether those who lost out of work because of repeated harassment, including Dutta who eventually left the film industry altogether, would get an opportunity to make a fresh start in Bollywood or not.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the outcome of the movement is yet to be fully understood, it should be noted that after years of being mum about issues, Bollywood finally found its voice in 2018.&nbsp;</p>

It's disappointing not for me but for the cast and the crew, which put in so much hard work," he added.&nbsp;<br />

'Bebaak'&nbsp;director Shazia in an open letter had questioned MAMI's decision to drop the films and had called it a "knee-jerk" reaction as the film was independently backed by Kashyap and not Phantom Films, which now stands dissolved.&nbsp;<br />

"I just wanted the film to be seen by people and it's overwhelming to see such a huge turnout. I was not expecting it," Shazia said.&nbsp;<br />

The filmmaker added that though the anger hasn't settled, she doesn't regret whatever transpired.&nbsp;<br />

Expressing her unwillingness to pursue the case further with a formal complaint, her statement further stated, "absence of a written complaint or FIR does not and cannot take away from the truth of my statements” made on an online portal about events of the intervening night of May 4-5, 2015. <p>The high court judge was hearing a Rs 10 crore defamation suit filed by Bahl against his former co-partners of Phantom films, Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane and a few other media houses over #MeToo allegations.&nbsp;<br />

<p>Vikas accused Anurag and Vikramaditya of being “opportunists” for using the allegations to defame him.</p>

<p>In two separate notices issued by Vikas on email, he accused them of orchestrating the whole campaign against him. He also wrote that they used this opportunity to disband Phantom Films, making him look responsible for the production house’s failure.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The notice was issued by his advocate Shamsher Garud of Jayakar and Partners that alleges that Anurag bribed another employee of the production house to make similar allegations against Vikas. The notice states: “This makes us wonder whether the alleged incident [of sexual assault] also has any authenticity, given that the alleged victim was, in fact, working as your own employee.”</p>

<p>It adds: “You are neither a witness nor the alleged victim, but instead an opportunist seeking to derive benefit based on unsubstantiated information. The alleged incident has not been established in any court of law and that you have exploited the media to propagate your own personal vendetta.”</p>

<p>Vikas states in the notice that the trio had been discussing to disband Phantom Films owing to creative and professional differences. The notice says, “However, putting [the blame of the production house shutting down] solely on Bahl is in bad taste.”</p>

<p>The director in its notice to both threatens to not stop at this but file civil and/or criminal defamation against Anurag and Vikramaditya if the two do not withdraw their “messages [on social media] and tender an unconditional apology to Bahl.”</p>

<p>An unnamed woman levied sexual misconduct allegations against the writer-lyricist who was soon to deny all charges. This started with a tweet that a user shared of an alleged incident that happened when Varun was studying at Benaras Hindu University.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the tweet went viral, Varun took to the social media platform to deny all that was said. &nbsp;In a detailed statement, he wrote: “Really unfortunate that these completely fabricated and defamatory allegations have been made on me. NONE of the sequence of events as described in that anonymous screenshot happened ever and I deny all of it with all the conviction I have in my bones.”</p>

<p>He added, “I know it is hard to reconcile the two - ‘Believe Women’ and ‘Don’t put any allegations on me’. I have been thrown this curveball and I will find a way - but at the end of the day, a complete lie can’t be allowed to roam free while truth sits cornered in a dungeon.”</p>

<p>Anurag in a two-page letter shared on Twitter after Huffington Post India carried a detailed account of victim’s sexual assault incident, issued a statement saying that &nbsp;“we didn’t handle it well and I cannot blame anybody but myself”. He apologised to the woman and said that he is&nbsp;“deeply, truly sorry.”</p>

<p>In the interview published by Huffington, Vikas reportedly entered the girl’s hotel room (who worked with Phantom Films) after a party in October 2015 and pretended to be drunk and passed out. He then forced himself on her but when she protested against his advances, he masturbated on her back and left the room. The women suffered through depression after the incident. Vikas then threatened and bullied her in the following years. She told Anurag about the incident hoping for some action.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the report was published, Anurag in his explanation said that he was misguided by his legal team. He revealed that Vikas was barred from entering the office premises, was suspended and had his signing authority removed. However, he was not fired as their contracts did not have any clause that would allow a co-owner to be fired on grounds of misconduct.</p>

<p>“If that wasn’t enough, I named and shamed him privately amongst whoever asked about it. While others in the industry were rumour-mongering, it was me who was responsible for bringing out Vikas’ name publically by speaking with Mumbai Mirror on an anonymous basis and the publication eventually carried out a front-page article about the incident. Nothing about it was under wraps. It has been out there for more than a year,” Anurag wrote in his note.</p>

I am not sure if she wants love or not in her life. She seems very confused. But watch the film to understand what she is all about. I made a film and decided to follow her character. I really don’t know her actually," the director said ambiguously.&nbsp;</p>

The film will release on Netflix on June 15th but Kashyap isn't worried that the reach of his film would be limited. "I am very happy the way Lust Stories has shaped up. It's okay that the film is not getting a theatrical release. I make films, that is my job. Now, it is up to people if they want to watch it or not- irrespective of the medium."<br />

The director feels that both digital and cinema halls can co-exist. "They will always co-exist. Digital won’t take over. Some films will stay in web format, some for cinema."&nbsp;<br />

Kashyap was in the capital city to launch the Delhi edition of MAMI year-round programme. The programme intends to showcase latest, talked-about- films from across the world to select audience each month. The Mumbai edition is already a hit and now the organisers have planned to take it outside Mumbai. Lauding the initiative to bring world and Indian cinema to Delhi, Kashyap rued that no such festival existed back when he was in Delhi studying at Delhi University.&nbsp;<br />

"We didn’t have anything like this back when I was in college. There used to be only IFFI and there was no awareness about the festivals. I discovered IFFI in '93 and I was in Delhi since 1989. <p>Apart from 'Lust Stories', Kashyap's upcoming projects include web series 'Sacred Games' which he is co-directing with Vikramaditya Motwane. It marks Saif Ali Khan's debut in web space and co-stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte. The series will be on Netflix in July. Kashyap is also directing 'Manmarziyaan' which stars Taapsee Pannu, Abhishek Bachchan and Vicky Kaushal which is slated to release later in 2018.</p>


Anurag Kashyap speaks to WION about the relevance of cinema halls in digital age and his latest film 'Lust Stories'.

With the advent of online video streaming sites, cine-goers now have the choice to sit at home and enjoy films from across the world. Filmmakers, TV producers have also found web a new medium to push content which may not work on the big screen or on TV. More and more producers are now making films solely for the digital audience. But with the advent of Netflix, Amazon and host of video streaming apps, will cinema halls cease to exist? "Cinema halls will always stay. We as filmmakers will make films for all kinds of mediums but cinema halls will remain for people like us. That won't go," says filmmaker Anurag Kashyap. Kashyap along with Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee and Karan Johar directs Netflix's new film 'Lust Stories' which is a sequel of sorts to 2013 film 'Bombay Talkies'. The anthology will have four distinct stories- each directed by the four filmmakers- with a common theme- lust. Anurag's film features Radhika Apte in the lead. Without divulging much about his film, Kashyap urged us to watch the film. " See the film. It's about a woman who is very contradictory in life. I am not sure if she wants love or not in her life. She seems very confused. But watch the film to understand what she is all about. I made a film and decided to follow her character. I really don’t know her actually," the director said ambiguously. Also read: 'Lust Stories' is a lot more than the four-letter word and thank god for that The film will release on Netflix on June 15th but Kashyap isn't worried that the reach of his film would be limited. "I am very happy the way Lust Stories has shaped up. It's okay that the film is not getting a theatrical release. I make films, that is my job. Now, it is up to people if they want to watch it or not- irrespective of the medium." The director feels that both digital and cinema halls can co-exist. "They will always co-exist. Digital won’t take over. Some films will stay in web format, some for cinema." Kashyap was in the capital city to launch the Delhi edition of MAMI year-round programme. The programme intends to showcase latest, talked-about- films from across the world to select audience each month. The Mumbai edition is already a hit and now the organisers have planned to take it outside Mumbai. Lauding the initiative to bring world and Indian cinema to Delhi, Kashyap rued that no such festival existed back when he was in Delhi studying at Delhi University. "We didn’t have anything like this back when I was in college. There used to be only IFFI and there was no awareness about the festivals. I discovered IFFI in '93 and I was in Delhi since 1989.
