In Anurag Kashyap's story, Radhika Apte plays a conflicted personality called Kalindi. She is a college teacher who is in an open marriage. On one drunken night, Kalindi sleeps with her student, played by Akash Thosar of 'Sairat' fame. And while the next morning she is convinced that it was just that - and even compels her student to record a statement that it was consensual, she becomes an obsessive monster who just can't leave the poor guy alone. In between the stalking him and his date, she can be seen speaking about her inner feelings to an imaginary shrink or maybe to herself. The camera never really reveals the listener, but the monologues do reveal how complex and confused Apte's character is about love, lust and life.</p>

Unlike Kalindi, Sudha (Bhumi Pednekar) in Zoya Akhtar's film isn't confused about her status in her employers'life. A bachelor, (Neil Bhooplam) he often has sex with his house help Sudha. While she may have control over him on the bed, she knows what her place in his household. Akhtar explains the humdrum of city life without too many dialogues, but thereby brilliantly explaining the stark class divide between the lead couple of her story.&nbsp;</p>

In Dibakara Banerji's story, the woman Reena (the ever so charming Manisha Koirala) is a woman of few words but someone who knows how to control the two men in her life. On a weekend getaway with her lover (Jaideep Ahlwat), Reena's blissful vacation is disrupted by her self-centered, control freak husband (Sanjay Kapoor) who also happens to her lover's best friend. And while the men skirt around the issue at hand, it is Reena, the bored housewife having an affair outside her marriage, who takes charge and gets her sweet, subtle revenge.&nbsp;<br />

Perhaps the most in-your-face story on lust is delivered by Karan Johar and predictably so. Johar's story is of new bride Megha(Kiara Advani in a refreshing act) who never finds any sexual satisfaction from her over-enthusiastic, naive husband Paras (played by the brilliant Vicky Kaushal). Paras is a man of five thrusts literally who never understands the concept of giving any kind of pleasure to his wife while making love. So Megha decides to take things in her own hand which ultimately has some hilarious consequences. Now, Johar always has had the ability to laugh at himself and here too uses an age-old&nbsp;popular 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham' theme song in the most convoluted situation- you will never see that song in the same way after watch 'Lust Stories'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The actors in all of the four films are pitch perfect. Radhika Apte, as the confused, conflicted Kalindi is a scene stealer like always. Much like her student, you will be left exasperated and slightly amused by her antics. Manisha Koirala brings back nostalgia as&nbsp;she plays the ice -cold, calm Reena to perfection. Just hope we get to see more of her on the big screen from now on. Zoya Kahtar's leading lady, Bhumi Pednekar emotes through her eyes. She barely has two lines in the film, but with just through her expressions, she plays Sudha - the housemaid with momentary dreams in her eyes and ultimate realisation of her place in the social strata brilliantly.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the film boasts of formidable actors, who have in the past proved that they are dependable names, it is three-films old Kiara Advani in Karan Johar's story who is a revelation. Kiara plays the unapologetic new bride Medha and looks her part,&nbsp;playing the woman who never really finds any kind of satisfaction from her over-enthusiastic husband. There is a certain glint of sarcasm in her eyes as she quietly observes her husband's buffoonery.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Among the men, Jaideep Ahlawat and Vicky Kaushal stand out distinctly as the inept, unaware, weak men to their strong women in life. Vicky Kaushal is endearing as the fumbling, inadequate husband who never really gets his wife. It's amazing to see the actor portray such a different character from what he has played earlier. 2018 is clearly turning out to be Kaushal's year- and rightfully so.&nbsp;</p>

Anurag Kashyap won't leave Bollywood till he works with Shah Rukh Khan

<p>The most striking thing about Anurag Kashyap&rsquo;s film <em>Mukkabaaz</em> is perhaps its lead actor. Vineet Kumar Singh may have featured in Kashyap&rsquo;s other films in the recent past, but his features and overall demeanour is unlike of a typical Hindi film hero and definitely not of a typical romantic film hero. Which is why when Kashyap, while promoting his film, called <em>Mukkabaaz </em>a sports film- one was naturally surprised by his choice for the main protagonist. Singh doesn&rsquo;t really fall under the conventional category of a romantic hero, and those who remember him from Gangs Of Wasseypur would also not believe him playing a boxer. And Singh manages to come out of the shadows of the previous supporting roles that he has played and deliver a stupefying performance. He is the writer of the film, it is his story and one can see the years he has put in to fit the role.</p>

<p>For starters, <em>Mukkabaaz</em> isn&rsquo;t completely a sports film. Neither is it a typical Anurag Kashyap film.&nbsp; At its core is a love story between Shravan Kumar (Singh), a Rajput boxer and an upper-caste mute Sunaina(Zoya Hussain). It is this love that convinces Shravan to fight the world, alibi through boxing. Because every love story is riddled by hate and every couple must endure hardships before love can conquer one and all.</p>

<p>Set in Uttar Pradesh, the film quite accurately highlights that part of India, which may have progressed in terms of infrastructure and technology, yet remains deep-rooted with problems like nepotism, casteism, bureaucracy and what not. The ethos is very old school Indian. Shravan is part of a local boxing federation which Bhagwan Das Mishra(Jimmy Sheirgill) runs like his own fiefdom. While initially, Shravan is the brightest spark in Bhagwan Das&rsquo; group, things start going downhill when Shravan dares to fall in love with his boss&rsquo;s niece. Now, Bhagwan is ruthless and egotistical who can go to any length to satisfy his ego. Naturally, when he finds out, he tries every possible way to get the two separated and challenges Shravan to win the Nationals even.</p>

<p>Shravan then has to struggle to first get selected by the federation and then get trained by an able coach whom he finds in Sanjay Kumar (Ravi Kishen). Sanjay Kumar not only makes him an able boxer but also teaches him the difference between <em>Mukkebaaz</em>(boxer) and a <em>Mukkabaaz</em>(fighter). And though he aspires to be a boxer, it&rsquo;s the constant challenges that life throws at him that makes Shravan a fighter.</p>

<p>Kashyap&rsquo;s films always have an underlying humour. Dialogues, sarcasm, wry humour are essential to Kashyap&rsquo;s tale and this one isn&rsquo;t any different. There are moments which are genuinely funny, but it isn&rsquo;t as entertaining as the scenes in <em>Gang Of Wasseypur.</em></p>

<p>&nbsp;The filmmaker also believes in detailing of each scenario which makes his films a tad too long. At two and a half hours, Mukkabaaz is a bit of a stretch especially in the second half. What Kashyap hasn&rsquo;t explored so far is an out and out love story until this film. And the makers signature style is evident even in a love story for <em>Mukkabaaz</em> very cleverly delivers a strong message about the condition of sports in India and how it&#39;s dying a slow death.&nbsp; A country that is obsessed with cricket overlooks every other sport and the talent that needs to be nurtured.</p>

<p><em>Mukkabaaz</em>, like other Kashyap films, scores because of its superb cast. Be it Vineet Singh, who shows arrogance and vulnerability with equal ease, or newcomer Zoya Hussain, who despite being mute has much to say always. Or the two &lsquo;stalwarts&rsquo; &ndash;Jimmy Sheirgill and Ravi Kishen who deliver solid performances making their respective characters appear very real. Sheirgill is a talent that Bollywood has underutilized for years. The actor&rsquo;s character Bhagwan Das maybe ruthless but he carries out his atrocities with unusual calm. And Sheirgill has aced playing the typical UP gang lord by now after playing similar roles in <em>Saheb Biwi </em><em>aur</em><em> Gangster</em> and <em>Tanu Weds Manu</em>. Ravi Kishen, sheds his superstar image and becomes a no-nonsense coach quite efficiently.</p>

<p>A catchy background score adds the edginess to all the fight sequences and music by Rachita Arora is rustic and hummable.</p>

<p>While <em>Mukkabaaz</em> is a fine piece of cinema, it only suffers for two aspects. First- its length and second- it&rsquo;s very predictable story. You have heard similar stories before or have known people who have undergone similar problems. Also while the boxing is an essential part of the narrative, it is ultimately a story of an individual and his hardships.</p>

<p><em>Mukkabaaz</em><em>, </em>despite these shortcomings, works for its actors. It also helps that Kashyap tries a new theme and gives it his own unique spin.</p>

And Sheirgill has aced playing the typical UP gang lord by now after playing similar roles in Saheb Biwi aur Gangster and Tanu Weds Manu. Ravi Kishen, sheds his superstar image and becomes a no-nonsense coach quite efficiently. A catchy background score adds the edginess to all the fight sequences and music by Rachita Arora is rustic and hummable. While Mukkabaaz is a fine piece of cinema, it only suffers for two aspects. First- its length and second- it’s very predictable story. You have heard similar stories before or have known people who have undergone similar problems. Also while the boxing is an essential part of the narrative, it is ultimately a story of an individual and his hardships. Mukkabaaz, despite these shortcomings, works for its actors. It also helps that Kashyap tries a new theme and gives it his own unique spin. Ratings: 3/5

While <em>Chutney</em> was dark, <em>Chhuri</em> is a very clever, witty take on fidelity and marriage. The 12-minute long video manages to make you smile and keep you hooked. The film has been directed by Mansi Jain who has co-written it with Chopra.</p>

The film also stars Jimmy Shergill in an important role. <p>The 45-year-old filmmaker says 1960s saw films by Bimal Roy and Hrishikesh Mukherji, who highlighted social problems in their films, and these issues were dealt with utmost care on celluloid just how he has stayed honest to his story.<br />

In an interview with PTI, Kashyap says, &quot;We grew up in a time when we made socio-political films, filmmakers like Bimal Roy, Hrishikesh Mukherji, Raj Kapoor made films that dealt with elements in society about casteism, widows, unwed mothers etc. These films were appreciated by the audience but then we stopped making them but again that trend has come back (in films).</p>

In a major embarrassment for CBFC head Pahlaj Nihalani, the SC on June 13 struck down all but one of the cuts suggested by the censor board and ordered the film board to issue an A - or adult - certificate for the film&#39;s screening immediately.<br />

India has a history of censoring sexually explicit and politically sensitive content, and Bollywood is increasingly finding itself under scrutiny.<br />

"He has given a very clear cut report that there is nothing in the movie which shows Punjab in bad light or which lowers the image of Punjab. He has written that drug menace can happen in any state, it's not just about Punjab. It does not glorify drugs. High court has taken a decision that this film will release tomorrow and the petition has been dismissed," said Sanjay Kaushal, a lawyer representing the 'Udta Punjab' team,. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had last month grounded the Abhishek Chaubey-directed film and suggested 89 cuts in the movie along with the removal of the word "Punjab" from the title and throughout the film. The film's makers challenged the censor board's decision in the apex court and a bitter legal battle followed between the two sides. In a major embarrassment for CBFC head Pahlaj Nihalani, the SC on June 13 struck down all but one of the cuts suggested by the censor board and ordered the film board to issue an A - or adult - certificate for the film's screening immediately. India has a history of censoring sexually explicit and politically sensitive content, and Bollywood is increasingly finding itself under scrutiny. In a series of tweets last week, co-producer of the movie, Anurag Kashyap had called Nihalani an "oligarch" and compared India to reclusive North Korea. Nihalani had said the film defamed Punjab and he challenged its claim that 70 per cent of its population was involved in substance abuse. The movie stars Bollywood actors Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Kareena Kapoor Khan in lead roles. (Reuters)
