Israel has effectively stopped issuing visas to the officials of United Nations starting Wednesday (Oct 25), a day after the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres indicated that Hamas' assault on Israeli civilians on October 7 was prompted by Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, which Guterres earlier on October 25 said was 'misreported'.

"The attacks by Hamas did not happen in a vacuum. Palestinians have been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation. But their grievances cannot justify the appalling attacks by Hamas. Those attacks cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinians," Guterres had said.

Later on October 25, Guterres clarified that his remarks were misrepresented.

Uproar grows in Israel for Guterres to issue apology

Israeli officials have been railing against the UN chief and demands have erupted from inside Israel for an apology from the UN chief. Guterres’s comments drew widespread outrage in Israel.

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan described them as "shocking" and demanded that the secretary general resign.

Foreign Minister Eli Cohen reportedly cancelled a meeting with Guterres, and Minister Benny Gantz labeled the UN chief a "terror apologist."

The strongly worded reactions continued on Wednesday morning.

Israel's foreign ministry wrote on X, that Guterres’s remarks "provoke anger and astonishment and tarnish both him and the organization he heads," and reflect "a biased and distorted attitude towards Israel on the part of the UN and especially on the part of the Secretary-General himself."

"The UN Secretary-General must retract his words, engage in deep personal soul-searching and apologize for his statement, which distressed millions of Israelis who are still experiencing the consequences of the murderous terrorist attack of October 7," the ministry added.

Israel's new visa policy towards UN officials

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan, in an interview with Army Radio, vowed to teach the UN a lesson with a punishing visa policy.

"Due to his remarks, we will refuse to issue visas to UN representatives," Erdan said. "We have already refused a visa for Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths. The time has come to teach them a lesson."

Israel stops UN staff visas after Antonio Guterres is branded 'terror apologist' for his Hamas remarks

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Wednesday (Oct 25) expressed “shock” over the gross “misinterpretation” of his remarks made in the Security Council, after Israel perceived them to be justifying Hamas terrorist’s October 7 attack.

Israel was peeved with the UN secretary-general on Tuesday for saying that the deadly Hamas attack on southern Israel “did not happen in a vacuum”.

Israeli ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan accused him of "justifying terrorism" and demanded his immediate resignation.

Briefing the reporters on Wednesday, Guterres, without mentioning Israel, said, “I am shocked by misinterpretations by some of my statement yesterday in the Security Council – as if it was justifying acts of terror by Hamas. This is false. It was the opposite.”

“In the beginning of my intervention yesterday, I clearly stated – and I quote: ‘I have condemned unequivocally the horrifying and unprecedented 7 October acts of terror by Hamas in Israel’.”

He clarified that his remarks in no way justified the assault by Hamas.

“Nothing can justify the deliberate killing, injuring and kidnapping of civilians – or the launching of rockets against civilian targets.”

“I spoke of the grievances of the Palestinian people. In doing so, I clearly stated, and I quote: ‘But the grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the appalling attacks by Hamas’.”

He said that he was clarifying his earlier remarks in order to “set the record straight”.

‘Need to set the record straight’: UN chief clarifies his Hamas remarks that riled Israel

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres, on Saturday (Oct 21), urged for a "humanitarian ceasefire" in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas that has ravaged most parts of Gaza, demanding "action to end this godawful nightmare".

Guterres, while addressing a Cairo summit, said that the Palestinian enclave of 2.4 million people was living through "a humanitarian catastrophe" with thousands dead and more than a million displaced.

"We meet in the heart of a region that is reeling in pain and one step from the precipice," he told the meeting that included the leaders of Egypt, Iraq, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates as well as of Italy, Spain and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.

On Oct 7, Hamas took the world by surprise after it launched an unprecedented attack against Israel. The violence in the region has claimed the lives of at least 1,400 people, which includes mostly civilians.

Guterres said "the grievances of the Palestinian people are legitimate and long" after "56 years of occupation with no end in sight" but stressed that "nothing can justify the reprehensible assault by Hamas that terrorised Israeli civilians".

He then stressed that "those abhorrent attacks can never justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people".

Jordan's King Abdullah II called for "an immediate end to the war on Gaza" and condemned what he labelled "global silence" on Palestinian death and suffering.

"The message the Arab world is hearing is loud and clear: Palestinian lives matter less than Israeli ones. Our lives matter less than other lives," he charged.

"The application of international law is optional. And human rights have boundaries -- they stop at borders, they stop at races, and they stop at religions."

The summit comes on the day when a convoy of 20 trucks, carrying humanitarian aid, entered the Gaza Strip from Egypt through the Rafah crossing.

"The relief aid convoy that is supposed to enter [Gaza] today includes 20 trucks that carry medicine, medical supplies, and a limited amount of food supplies (canned goods)," said Hamas's media office, in a statement.

The UN has said that about 100 trucks per day are needed to meet worsening needs in Gaza.

The Palestinians need "a continuous delivery of aid to Gaza at the scale that is needed", the UN chief told the Cairo "Summit for Peace".

UN chief Antonio Guterres urges ceasefire to end Gaza's 'godawful nightmare'

The military leaders who overthrew Niger's president criticised late Friday the "perfidious actions" of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, accusing him of obstructing their participation in the body's General Assembly.

President Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown by the military on July 26 and has been detained at home with his wife and child since.

Military chiefs say they plan for a three-year transition period to restore constitutional order.

The fourth West African nation since 2020 to suffer a coup, Niger has come under sanctions and threats of military intervention from the Economic Community of West African States.

Bazoum's removal has also been strongly criticised by Western governments and global bodies, such as the United Nations.

Bakary Yaou Sangare, who before the coup was Niger's ambassador to the UN and is now its foreign minister, was set to represent Niamey at the gathering.

"Mr Guterres not only refused to take note of the official list of delegates from Niger... but above all acceded to the fanciful request of the former minister of foreign affairs Hassoumi Massaoudou tending to revoke the permanent representative of Niger to the United Nations", the military statement said.

'He obstructed...': Niger junta rulers slam Antonio Guterres for UNGA snub

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for reforms in multilateral institutions, such as the Security Council. "It is reform or rupture," he said at the 78th UNGA session where world leaders gathered in the backdrop of global challenges and rising geopolitical tensions.

"It is high time to renew multilateral institutions based on 21st-century economic and political realities – rooted in equity, solidarity, and universality and anchored in the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law. That means reforming the Security Council in line with the world of today. It means redesigning the international financial architecture so that it becomes truly universal and serves as a global safety net for developing countries in trouble," Guterres said during his speech.

He further said that he has "no illusions" and that he knows that reforms are "a question of power".

78th UNGA session: Antonio Guterres calls for 'reforming' Security Council

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has reiterated his call for the deployment of a multinational force in Haiti.

In a letter to the UN Security Council, Secretary-General Guterres wrote, "I continue to appeal to Member States to deploy a non-United Nations multinational force, composed of police special forces and military support units."

Deployment of forces

For months, Guterres and Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry have been pleading for forces to be deployed to the crisis-hit Caribbean country.

Haiti, as per AFP, is battling compounding humanitarian, political and security crises that have overwhelmed both its 'weak' government and security forces.

However, despite their attempts, many countries have been hesitant to step in. This, as per the news agency, stems from the fear of getting stuck in a bloody quagmire.

Kenya steps in

In July, Kenya announced its willingness to head a multinational police intervention to train and assist the police forces in Haiti. Nairobi also offered help, pledging 1,000 officers.

In his letter, Guterres said that a deployment is "urgently needed" and welcomed Kenya's offer. He also acknowledged that the Kenyan mission has received backing from The Bahamas and Jamaica. Additionally, he made mention of "announcements made by Antigua and Barbuda to consider contributing."

"Addressing the security situation in Haiti requires a range of coercive law enforcement measures, including active use of force in targeted police operations against heavily armed gangs," he added in the letter.

For the mission to turn into reality, a green light from the Security Council is necessary. Nevertheless, the United States — currently presiding over the Council's rotating presidency — has pledged resources to support the deployment.

Additionally, US and the Ecuador have promised to push for the deployment's authorisation.

"We're hopeful that other countries will also step up with the appropriate personnel and facilities, and that we will have the Security Council also move forward on the recommendations that the secretary-general has now given," said Farhan Haq, Guterres' spokesperson.

Situation in Haiti

In a letter to the UN Security Council, Secretary-General Guterres wrote, "I continue to appeal to Member States to deploy a non-United Nations multinational force, composed of police special forces and military support units." Deployment of forces For months, Guterres and Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry have been pleading for forces to be deployed to the crisis-hit Caribbean country. Haiti, as per AFP, is battling compounding humanitarian, political and security crises that have overwhelmed both its 'weak' government and security forces. This, as per the news agency, stems from the fear of getting stuck in a bloody quagmire. Kenya steps in In July, Kenya announced its willingness to head a multinational police intervention to train and assist the police forces in Haiti. Nairobi also offered help, pledging 1,000 officers. In his letter, Guterres said that a deployment is "urgently needed" and welcomed Kenya's offer. He also acknowledged that the Kenyan mission has received backing from The Bahamas and Jamaica. Additionally, he made mention of "announcements made by Antigua and Barbuda to consider contributing." "Addressing the security situation in Haiti requires a range of coercive law enforcement measures, including active use of force in targeted police operations against heavily armed gangs," he added in the letter. UN Chief: Climate change is here and it is terrifying

The world is suffering from unprecedentedly high temperatures. Tourists are fleeing the raging wildfires in Greece. Now the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has begun warning about the terrible conditions of our planet Earth. Take a look.

UN Chief pleads for immediate radical action on climate change

After 15 years of hectic negotiations, the United Nations (UN) has finally adopted the world’s first treaty that is legally binding to protect the high seas and preserve marine biodiversity in international waters.

Called the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty (BBNJ), or more widely knowns as the High Seas Treaty, was approved by the 193 UN member states.

The treaty calls for the imposition of rules aimed at protecting the environment and resolving disputes over natural resources, shipping and other matters in waters beyond any country's national jurisdiction.

“You have delivered. And you have done so at a critical time,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the member nations Monday upon the treaty's adoption.

‘Pumped new life’

In a statement, Guterres said that the member states have "pumped new life and hope to give the ocean a fighting chance” by approving the text.

The new agreement “is critical to addressing the threats facing the ocean, and to the success of ocean-related goals and targets, including the 2030 Agenda, the UN chief said on Monday.

The BBNJ is a landmark agreement and would coincide with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which came into force three decades ago.

The Law of the Sea treaty regulates seas within a country's territorial waters and exclusive economic zones, leaving nearly half the planet's surface and two-thirds of the ocean unregulated — particularly when it comes to protecting biodiversity.

BBNJ is an extension of that treaty as it encompasses the high seas, beyond the exclusive economic zones or national waters of countries.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), these areas account for “almost half of the Earth’s surface”.

They are hardly regulated and also least understood or explored for their biodiversity - only 1 per cent of these areas are under protection, IUCN said.

What’s next?

The next step is that the treaty will be open for signature in New York, the headquarters of the UN, for two years starting September 20, the day following a summit on the UN sustainable development goals.

According to the UN, it will take effect after 60 countries ratify the agreement.

The pact is a key plank in efforts to put 30 per cent of the world's land and sea under environmental protection by 2030, a goal set in December.

UN adopts world’s first treaty on high seas, Antonio Guterres lauds member states

The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Sunday (May 21) amid the ongoing Group of Seven (G7) summit in Japan’s Hiroshima called for reform of the UN Security Council to reflect the realities of the present world.

UN chief urges reform of Security Council, Bretton Woods

Addressing a press conference in Japan, Guterres said that it was time to reform both the Security Council and Bretton Woods to align with the “realities of today's world,” adding that both institutions reflected the power relations of 1945 and are in need of an update. He also noted how the global financial architecture had become “outdated, dysfunctional and unfair,” as per Reuters.

This was said in the context of the economic shocks that the world witnessed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine while the system put in place has failed to “fulfil its core function as a global safety net,” said the UN chief.

He also went on to note how he felt a growing consciousness among developing countries at the G7 summit that not enough steps are being taken to reform these decades-old institutions or “remove the frustrations” of the Global South, reported Reuters.

G7 and the Global South

In its World Economic Outlook published earlier this year, the International Monetary Fund said that India and China will account for nearly 50 per cent of the world’s growth in 2023. On the other hand, it is also worth noting that the G7 group of wealthy countries’ economic clout has also shrunk in the past three decades or so.

According to the IMF, the seven major economies account for nearly 30 per cent of the global GDP in 2023, as opposed to 50.7 per cent in 1980, reported Reuters. “The G7 members were able to discuss with some of the most important emerging economies in the world,” said Guterres.

As the G7 presidency holder, Japan also invited leaders from the so-called Global South to Hiroshima for talks including Indian PM Narendra Modi, Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

UN, Security Council will remain just ‘talk shop’ without reform: PM Modi

During his address at a G7 session in Hiroshima, the Indian PM said that the UN and the Security Council will remain just a “talk shop” if they do not reflect the realities of the present world and called for reform of the global body, reported news agency PTI.

“It is a matter of analysis, why do we have to talk about peace and stability in different forums? Why is the UN, which was started with the idea of establishing peace, not successful in preventing conflicts today?” the Indian PM questioned.

He also went on to ask why even the definition of terrorism has not been accepted in the UN, adding that “If one introspects, one thing is clear - The institutions created in the last century are not in line with the system of the twenty-first century,” as quoted by PTI.

“They do not reflect the realities of the present. That is why it is necessary that reforms should be implemented in big institutions like the UN,” said the Indian PM, adding that these institutions also need to become the voice of the Global South. “Otherwise, we will only keep talking about ending the conflicts. The UN and the Security Council will remain just a talk shop,” said PM Modi, at a G7 session.

New Delhi is eyeing a permanent seat on the UNSC, which is currently held by five countries – Russia, the United Kingdom, China, France and the United States, who wield the power to veto any substantive resolution.

UN chief, Indian PM Modi call for reform of Security Council to reflect ‘realities’ of today

United Nations (UN) chief Antonio Guterres will be holding talks with international envoys at an unknown location in Doha on Monday in a bid to explore ways to influence Taliban rulers in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is being considered as being in the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world by the United Nations and Guterres' dilemma on appropriate actions has further increased by the banning of girls from schools and women from working in NGOs as well as UN agencies by the Taliban administration.

The government of Taliban, which came back to power in August, 2021, will not attend the talks which will include representatives from around 25 nations and international organisations, as per the diplomats.

Ahead of the meeting, a group of women in Kabul on Saturday protested against any international recognition of the Taliban government. However, the Western powers and the UN remain adamant that this issue will not be discussed.

"Any kind of recognition of the Taliban is completely off the table," US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel stated.

The UN secretary-general will be giving an update on a review of the critical relief operation of the world body in Afghanistan which was ordered in April after Afghan women were stopped by the authorities from working with the UN agencies, said the diplomats.

UN expert for the International Crisis Group Richard Gowan said that the United Nations is "in a trap over Afghanistan".

"Guterres has to untangle a very complicated knot. He needs to find a way to keep aid flowing into Afghanistan, but the Taliban ban on women is a huge blow to the UN's ability to operate in the country," he added.

He stated that the international community wishes that the UN's critical presence is maintained.

"There are lots of differences among Security Council members over Afghanistan. But everyone, including Russia and China, agrees it is better to have the UN in Kabul than not,” he added.

The UN also wants "unity or commonality of message" on women's and human rights, drug trafficking and countering terrorism.

UN chief Guterres, envoys to hold key discussion on Afghanistan crisis

Just ahead of International Women's Day. UN chief, Antonio Guterres has made a stunning claim. He says gender equality is still 300 years away. Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: UN chief warns gender equality still 300 years away

On International Women's Day we ask how far we are from gender equality and what is the status of women in today's time. With the women in Afghanistan being relegated to second class citizens to the anti-hijab protests in Iran. We assess gender empowerment and whether women's rights have taken a back seat.

UN Chief warns gender equality will take 300 years to achieve

Global progress on women's rights is "won over decades (is) vanishing before our eyes" said United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Monday. He warned that gender equality remains a distant goal. Speaking during a speech ahead of International Women's Day on March 8, he said, "Gender equality is growing more distant. On the current track, UN Women puts it 300 years away."

Ticking off a litany of abuses like maternal mortality, child marriage, girls being denied education and more, that women face, he said that "women's rights are being abused, threatened, and violated around the world."

Mentioning the dire conditions in Afghanistan, he remarked, "women and girls have been erased from public life."

On the current track, UN Women puts it 300 years away." Ticking off a litany of abuses like maternal mortality, child marriage, girls being denied education and more, that women face, he said that "women's rights are being abused, threatened, and violated around the world." Mentioning the dire conditions in Afghanistan, he remarked, "women and girls have been erased from public life." UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres: "We are on a highway to climate hell"

During the initial days of the COP27 summit, UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres had asked world leaders what they had done for the world and the planet till now. Being unhappy with the developments in the last two weeks, the UN secretary-general made it clear on Sunday that COP27 did not meet the ambitions at all.

Guterres said that the COP27 climate talks had fallen short in pushing for the urgent "drastic" carbon-cutting needed to tackle global warming, AFP reported. He said, "Our planet is still in the emergency room. We need to drastically reduce emissions now, and this is an issue this COP did not address."

Similar remarks were issued by Frans Timmermans, the EU’s climate chief. Timmermans said that COP27 failed to reach a consensus on keeping global warming to below 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century while adding that the bloc did not want to scupper a loss and damage fund for more ambition

Norway’s climate minister Espen Barthe Eide also criticised the gathering saying the final declaration did not "contain an explicit reference to phasing down fossil fuels or peaking emissions by 2025."

Eide said, "The Egyptian president’s focus on the loss and damage fund detracted from work on climate mitigation." Although he lauded the declaration for not letting the ambition "scale down from Glasgow".

UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres calls out COP27 for failing to meet ambitions

It seems that the world has to wait a little while longer for getting on the path towards catastrophe. To highlight the climate issues, the COP27 summit is extended for a day as negotiators seek to break a deadlock over creating a loss and damage fund.

United Nations secretary-general Antony Guterres warned companies around the world against “toxic cover-up" as investments in new fossil fuels, harmful emissions or deforestation will negate their claims of achieving “net zero”. During his speech at the COP27 event in Egypt, Guterres added that companies should update their environmental pledges every year and keep a tab on their progress.

"Using bogus 'net-zero' pledges to cover up massive fossil fuel expansion is reprehensible. It is rank deception. This toxic cover-up could push our world over the climate cliff. The sham must end."

COP27: United Nations chief criticises companies for engaging in ‘toxic cover-up’

Every year the frequency of climate-related extreme weather is increasing, however, half of the world's nations still lack sophisticated early warning systems that could save lives. Attempting to overcome this shortfall, the UN on Monday unveiled a five-year proposal to develop a global early warning system for expensive and deadly extreme weather events.

The system will cost an estimated $3.1 billion, which, according to Antonio Guterres, the chief of the UN is a tiny price to pay for techniques that have been proven to save thousands, if not millions, of lives.

Noting that more than 70 journalists were killed this year for "fulfilling their role in society", United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has stressed that a "free press" is vital for democracy, exposing wrongdoing and advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ahead of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists on November 2, Guterres called on the governments and international community to take necessary steps to protect journalists.

"A free press is vital to a functioning democracy, exposing wrongdoing, navigating our complex world and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals," he said.

"Yet, more than 70 journalists have been killed this year simply for fulfilling this role in society. Most of these crimes go unsolved. Meanwhile, a record number of journalists are incarcerated today, while threats of imprisonment, violence and death keep growing," the UN chief said in a message.

Marking the tenth anniversary of United Nations Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists, which aims to create a safe and free environment for all media workers, Guterres said, "I call on governments and the international community take the necessary steps to protect our journalists. We must end a common culture of impunity and enable journalists to do their essential work."

He observed that a surge in disinformation, online bullying and hate speech, particularly against women journalists, is contributing to the stifling of media workers around the world.

"On this International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, let us honour our media workers, and stand up for truth, justice and human rights for all.

"Intimidation through the abuse of legal, financial and other means is undermining efforts to hold the powerful accountable. These trends threaten not only journalists, but society as a whole," Guterres said.

Activists have renewed calls for rich polluting nations to compensate developing countries for the devastating impacts caused by the climate crisis following the catastrophic floods in Pakistan.

Just as racial justice activists call for compensation for the descendants of enslaved people, campaigners want to go further and frame the issue as "climate reparations".

Rather than devoting the funds for increasing resilience to a rapidly changing planet, green groups are calling for debt cancellation of cash-strapped nations that spend huge portions of their budgets servicing external loans.

Although small island nations susceptible to rising sea levels were the first to push the idea, it is gaining momentum once again due to the catastrophic inundations in Pakistan.

Unprecedented monsoon rains have killed almost 1,600 while it displaced several million and caused a loss of approximately $30 billion.

In comparison to the G20 countries, which account for 80 per cent of global greenhouse emissions, poor nations produce less than one per cent of it.

Taking steps to alter systems and improve infrastructure for changes that are already locked in and reducing heat-trapping greenhouse gases are currently the two-pronged approach used in the international climate response.

Seeking compensation for multiplying severe weather impacts that countries cannot withstand, calls for "loss and damage" payments go further than adaptation financing.

While as much of the mobilised funding came in the form of loans, advanced economies agreed to channel $100 billion to less developed countries by the year 2020.

With the benefits flowing to a tiny elite, Pakistan's emissions are fast rising although they are low on the global scale.

UN chief Antonio Guterres' call for "meaningful action" and "loss and damage" payments boosted the concept of reparations but the issue is sensitive for rich countries.

In the Paris Agreement, the United States kept language regarding "liability and compensation" out as it is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases historically and Washington fears it could pave the way for legal action.

× Unprecedented monsoon rains have killed almost 1,600 while it displaced several million and caused a loss of approximately $30 billion. Activists renew calls for rich polluting nations to compensate developing countries for climate crisis

"Any annexation in a state's territory by any other state by use of force is violation of UN charter and international law," said UN Chief Antonio Guterres. He also said that any type of nuclear threat is unacceptable.

UN Chief Antonio Guterres at the UNGA has now urged rich countries to tax windfall profits of fossil fuel companies for climate damage. He also urged to use that money instead to help countries harmed by the climate crisis.

United Nations Secretary Antonio Guterres has urged countries around the world to impose some form of “windfall taxes” on fossil fuel companies. During the UN general assembly, he said that the money should then be distributed among nations which are suffering from major climate crisis.

In a speech that outlined a number of environmental issues plaguing the planet, Guterres said that the “polluters must pay” for the damage caused by natural disasters in a number of countries.

“Today, I am calling on all developed economies to tax the windfall profits of fossil fuel companies,” Guterres said in a speech to the UN general assembly on Tuesday, according to AFP.

“Those funds should be redirected in two ways – to countries suffering loss and damage caused by the climate crisis and to people struggling with rising food and energy prices,” he added.

According to the plan put forward by Guterres, the revenue that will be generated from the taxes can be used for getting early warning systems and provisions for countries who are generally prone to major natural disasters. He described it as a “climate-related and justice-based” global tax.

“Let’s have no illusions. We are in rough seas. A winter of global discontent is on the horizon, a cost-of-living crisis is raging, trust is crumbling, inequalities are exploding, and our planet is burning,” he told the assembly. “We have a duty to act and yet we are gridlocked in colossal global dysfunction. The international community is not ready or willing to tackle the big dramatic challenges of our age.”
