"Yet, more than 70 journalists have been killed this year simply for fulfilling this role in society. &nbsp;Most of these crimes go unsolved. &nbsp;Meanwhile, a record number of journalists are incarcerated today, while threats of imprisonment, violence and death keep growing," the UN chief said in a message.

Marking the tenth anniversary of United Nations Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists, which aims to create a safe and free environment for all media workers, Guterres said, "I call on governments and the international community take the necessary steps to protect our journalists. We must end a common culture of impunity and enable journalists to do their essential work."

He observed that a surge in disinformation, online bullying and hate speech, particularly against women journalists, is contributing to the stifling of media workers around the world.

"On this International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, let us honour our media workers, and stand up for truth, justice and human rights for all.

"Intimidation through the abuse of legal, financial and other means is undermining efforts to hold the powerful accountable. These trends threaten not only journalists, but society as a whole," Guterres said.

“Today, I am calling on all developed economies to tax the windfall profits of fossil fuel companies,” Guterres said in a speech to the UN general assembly on Tuesday, according to AFP.

&nbsp;“Those funds should be redirected in two ways – to countries suffering loss and damage caused by the climate crisis and to people struggling with rising food and energy prices,” he added.

According to the plan put forward by Guterres, the revenue that will be generated from the taxes can be used for getting early warning systems and provisions for countries who are generally prone to major natural disasters. He described it as a “climate-related and justice-based” global tax.

“Let’s have no illusions. We are in rough seas. A winter of global discontent is on the horizon, a cost-of-living crisis is raging, trust is crumbling, inequalities are exploding, and our planet is burning,” he told the assembly. “We have a duty to act and yet we are gridlocked in colossal global dysfunction. The international community is not ready or willing to tackle the big dramatic challenges of our age.”

&nbsp;“Specifically, that will include the commitment by Russian forces to withdraw military personnel and equipment from that perimeter and the commitment by Ukrainian forces not to move in.”&nbsp;

The Russian military took over the plant in early March and although Ukraine has been trying to win it back, the occupying forces were able to defend it despite facing heavy shelling.&nbsp;

Since August 1, 650,000 tonnes of grain and agricultural products from Ukraine have departed the ports of Odessa, Chornomorsk, and Pivdenny in accordance with the conditions of the July agreement.

Earlier, due to the February Russian invasion of Ukraine, exports of cereal from Kyiv, one of the top producers and exporters in the world, were halted for several months, sparking concerns about a possible worldwide food catastrophe.

Allow Russian shipments to move 'unimpeded' or risk a global food crisis, warns UN chief

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday (August 20) inspected a grain ship anchored off Turkish coast. A boat took the secretary general from Istanbul to the grain ship. The ship was chartered by the United Nations to transport Ukrainian grain on the southern shores of Istanbul.

Ukraine, a leading producer of foodgrains&nbsp;has been under attack from Russia since February 24 this year. The invasion created obstacles in the path of grain export from Ukraine raising the spectre of global food crisis. But a deal was brokered by the UN and Turkey between Ukraine and Russia that resulted in agreement for safe passage for grain ships from and to Ukraine.

The agreement also guarantees Russia a right to sell fertilisers and agricultural products despite western sanctions. Guterres said that Russian fertilisers and agricultural products should be able to reach global markets 'unimpeded'. He warned of a global food crisis next year should this not happen.

"It is important that all governments and the private sector cooperate to bring them to market," he said from the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC).

The JCC oversees the implementation of the Ukrainian grain export agreement signed in July by Kyiv and Moscow.

UN chief inspects Ukraine grain ship off the coast of Turkey

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Friday (August 19) said that the Russia-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station not be cut off from Ukraine's grid.&nbsp;

During his crucial visit to the port of Odessa in southern Ukraine, the UN Secretary-General said, "Obviously, the electricity from Zaporizhzhia is Ukrainian electricity... This principle must be fully respected."

His statement comes after Ukraine reported that Russia was planning to switch off the functioning power blocks at the Zaporizhzhia plant. Ukraine's state nuclear company Energoatom&nbsp;said on Friday that Russian forces are planning to disconnect them from the Ukrainian power grid.

The energy operator said: "There is information that Russian occupying troops are planning to shut off the reactors and switch them from the output lines of the Ukrainian energy system."

Accusing Moscow, Ukraine claimed that Russia will soon cut electricity produced in Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. But Guterres said that the electricity generated at Zaporizhzhia belonged to Ukraine and demanded that the principle be "fully respected".&nbsp;

Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is located near the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula. It has six of Ukraine's 15 reactors and it is capable of supplying power for four million homes.&nbsp;

Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of preparing "provocations" at the facility. Ukraine even claimed that Russia was shelling Europe's largest nuclear power plant, which was captured by Russia in March but is still run by Ukrainian technicians.&nbsp;

The recent conflicts have renewed fears that the invasion could result in damage to nuclear reactors. It could trigger another emergency like the 1986 Chernobyl accident, the world's worst nuclear disaster.&nbsp;

As fighting rages on between Kyiv and Moscow, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday ruled out peace with Russia unless it withdraws its troops from Ukraine.

Zelensky made the statement after meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

As per an AFP report, while speaking to the press, the war-torn country's president said he was "very surprised" to hear from the Turkish president that Russia was "ready for some kind of peace", adding, "first they should leave our territory and then we'll see".

This comes as Erdogan warned of "another Chernobyl" after his first face-to-face talks with Zelensky.&nbsp;Speaking to the press in Lviv, he said: "We are worried. We don't want another Chernobyl."

World leaders have issued urgent warnings as fighting recently flared up at Europe's largest nuclear facility, the Zaporizhzhia&nbsp;power station. The Ukrainian facility is currently under Russian control.

While the battle continues in several regions of Ukraine, it has recently concentrated in the southern region of Zaporizhzhia and its nuclear facility. Following a direct interaction with Guterres in Lviv, Zelensky has requested that the UN provide security at the plant.

He accused Russia of carrying out "deliberate" attacks on the plant and demanded that the "UN must ensure the security of this strategic object, its demilitarisation and complete liberation from Russian troops."
