The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant has been at the center of a lot of discussion in the past few weeks due to the threat it poses amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. A number of world leaders have already expressed their concern regarding the possible radiation leak that can happen due to the constant shelling from both sides and on Tuesday, UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, joined the list.

During a UN security council session, Guterres called for a demilitarised zone around the power plant to ensure no accident can take place. It will mean withdrawal of the Russian troops from the premises of the plant and also an understanding with Ukraine that the resistance forces will not move forward.

The idea was first proposed by Rafael Mariano Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the UN secretary general showed his full support for the proposal.

UN secretary general calls for demilitarisation zone around Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced that the United nations is working with the United States and European union to overcome obstacles preventing Russian food and fertilizers reaching world markets.

'Working to get Russian food to markets,' says UN chief on global food crisis

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday warned that Russian fertilisers and agricultural products must reach world markets "unimpeded" or the world risks a global food crisis as early as next year.

"It is important that all governments and the private sector cooperate to bring them to market."

A grain export agreement was reached between Ukraine and Russia this July, the deal is backed by the UN and Turkiye, and implemented by the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC).

Allow Russian shipments to move 'unimpeded' or risk a global food crisis, warns UN chief

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday (August 20) inspected a grain ship anchored off Turkish coast. A boat took the secretary general from Istanbul to the grain ship. The ship was chartered by the United Nations to transport Ukrainian grain on the southern shores of Istanbul.

Ukraine, a leading producer of foodgrains has been under attack from Russia since February 24 this year. The invasion created obstacles in the path of grain export from Ukraine raising the spectre of global food crisis. But a deal was brokered by the UN and Turkey between Ukraine and Russia that resulted in agreement for safe passage for grain ships from and to Ukraine.

The agreement also guarantees Russia a right to sell fertilisers and agricultural products despite western sanctions. Guterres said that Russian fertilisers and agricultural products should be able to reach global markets 'unimpeded'. He warned of a global food crisis next year should this not happen.

"It is important that all governments and the private sector cooperate to bring them to market," he said from the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC).

The JCC oversees the implementation of the Ukrainian grain export agreement signed in July by Kyiv and Moscow.

UN chief inspects Ukraine grain ship off the coast of Turkey

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Friday (August 19) said that the Russia-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station not be cut off from Ukraine's grid.

During his crucial visit to the port of Odessa in southern Ukraine, the UN Secretary-General said, "Obviously, the electricity from Zaporizhzhia is Ukrainian electricity... This principle must be fully respected."

His statement comes after Ukraine reported that Russia was planning to switch off the functioning power blocks at the Zaporizhzhia plant. Ukraine's state nuclear company Energoatom said on Friday that Russian forces are planning to disconnect them from the Ukrainian power grid.

The energy operator said: "There is information that Russian occupying troops are planning to shut off the reactors and switch them from the output lines of the Ukrainian energy system."

Accusing Moscow, Ukraine claimed that Russia will soon cut electricity produced in Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. But Guterres said that the electricity generated at Zaporizhzhia belonged to Ukraine and demanded that the principle be "fully respected".

Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is located near the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula. It has six of Ukraine's 15 reactors and it is capable of supplying power for four million homes.

Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of preparing "provocations" at the facility. Ukraine even claimed that Russia was shelling Europe's largest nuclear power plant, which was captured by Russia in March but is still run by Ukrainian technicians.

North Korea slams UN chief over 'biased' support for its denuclearisation

While attending the 77th anniversary of the world's first atomic bombing in Japan, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said any attack on a nuclear plant is a "suicidal thing".

Is the risk of nuclear confrontation back?

UN nuclear chief has said that the situation in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant is 'completely out of control'. The plant is currently under Russian occupation. UN Secretary General has warned that humanity is one miscalculation away from nuclear annihilation. Palki Sharma has the details.

Gravitas: Ukraine war: Warnings of a nuclear emergency

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday (August 1) said that a small misunderstanding can cause nuclear annihilation of humanity. His words came as the US, Britain and France urged Russia to stop "its dangerous nuclear rhetoric and behaviour." Guterres was talking at the time of opening of a key Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty conference in New York. UN secretary general warned that world faced "a nuclear danger not seen since the height of the Cold War."

He mentioned Russia's invasion of Ukraine, tensions on the Korean peninsula and in West Asia and said that crises "with nuclear undertones" could escalate.

"Today, humanity is just one misunderstanding, one miscalculation away from nuclear annihilation," Guterres told the 10th review conference of the NPT, an international treaty that came into force in 1970 to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.

"We have been extraordinarily lucky so far. But luck is not a strategy. Nor is it a shield from geopolitical tensions boiling over into nuclear conflict," he added, calling on nations to "put humanity on a new path towards a world free of nuclear weapons."

The meeting is being held at UN headquarters in New York it will run till August 26. The meeting was postponed several times since 2020 due to Covid pandemic. Guterres said that the conference was "a chance to strengthen" the treaty and "make it fit for the worrying world around us."

"Eliminating nuclear weapons is the only guarantee they will never be used," the secretary-general implored, adding that he would visit Hiroshima for the anniversary of the August 6, 1945 atomic bombing of the Japanese city by the United States.

"Almost 13,000 nuclear weapons are now being held in arsenals around the world. All this at a time when the risks of proliferation are growing and guardrails to prevent escalation are weakening," Guterres added.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warns of 'nuclear annihilation'

Russian and Ukrainian officials have signed a deal to allow grain exports from Ukrainian Black Sea ports. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan were also present at the ceremony.

Russia, Ukraine sign grain export deal in Turkiye

Negotiators from almost 200 countries will meet in Bonn Monday for climate talks tasked with reigniting momentum on tackling global warming, as Russia's invasion of Ukraine overshadows the threat from rising emissions.

The conference will set the stage for a fresh round of major United Nations talks later this year in Egypt.

It will also be a chance to test the resolve of nations facing a catalogue of crises, including escalating climate impacts, geopolitical tensions, bloodshed in Ukraine and the threat of a devastating global food crisis.

"Climate change is not an agenda we can afford to push back on our global schedule," said outgoing UN climate change chief Patricia Espinosa ahead of the meeting.

She said it is imperative that nations arrive at the UN COP27 meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh in November prepared to show they are taking "bold, concrete steps -- backed by specific plans -- to deliver the urgent and transformational climate ambition we simply must see before it's too late".

Governments have already accepted that climate change is a grave threat to humanity and the planet, and have advocated immediate action to cut fossil fuel emissions and prepare for the accelerating impacts of warming.

The summary to this year's landmark climate report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded that any further delay in action "will miss a brief and rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all".

But as things are going, the world is unlikely to be able to meet the Paris climate deal's commitment to limit warming "well below" 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

"There is this disconnect between the scientific evidence of global crisis in the making, of potentially rushing towards unmanageable climate impact, versus the lack of action," Johan Rockstrom, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, told AFP.

"This is a deep worry."

Funding focus

While the June 6 to 16 conference in Bonn is a largely technical meeting aimed at preparing for Egypt, there are a number of key issues up for debate.

A particular focus will be funding from rich polluters to help vulnerable developing nations least responsible for global heating to cope with its increasingly ferocious consequences.

A promise of $100 billion a year from 2020 to help them adapt to a warming world has still not been met.

Meanwhile, there are growing calls for "loss and damage" funding for countries already struck by devastating climate impacts, with a specific dialogue on the subject slated for this week.

The Alliance of Small Island States has warned that the Bonn conference must not be "just another talk shop", calling for a "clear view" on when and how this financing will be put in place.

'Fragile' world

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres last week warned that Russia's invasion of Ukraine risked slowing action to combat the climate crisis.

The invasion has prompted countries, particularly in Europe, to scramble to shore up energy supplies. It has also caused wheat and fertiliser prices to soar.

Fears of a food crisis have intensified in recent weeks, with India moving to ban wheat exports after the hottest March and April on record -- blamed largely on climate change -- hit harvests.

One opportunity for exhibiting political will comes on Wednesday when the European Parliament votes several hotly debated planks of the bloc's sprawling "Fit for 55" climate plan.

EU member states have set themselves the target of reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by 55 per cent by 2030 compared to 1990, and achieving carbon neutrality for the continent by 2050.

In May, an analysis from non-profit groups found that countries in the G20 group of major economies have yet to strengthen greenhouse gas reduction goals, despite agreeing to revisit their plans.

Last year in Glasgow, countries made new pledges to slash methane emissions, stop deforestation and other measures that -- in addition to existing national carbon cutting pledges could theoretically cap warming under 2C, said Rockstrom.

Climate talks test global resolve on warming

The United Nations on Wednesday (May 18) warned that the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war could cause a global food crisis as the organisation urged Moscow to release Ukrainian grain.

While speaking at a major United Nations summit in New York, UN chief Antonio Guterres stated that years of mass hunger and famine will be followed if a growing global food crisis is not tackled.

The Russia-Ukraine war led to massive global food insecurity, a crisis that has already impacted countries because of the warming temperatures and the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

In a meeting on the growing food crisis chaired by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Guterres said, "Now the war in Ukraine is amplifying and accelerating all these factors: climate change, COVID-19 and inequality."

"It threatens to tip tens of millions of people over the edge into food insecurity, followed by malnutrition, mass hunger and famine, in a crisis that could last for years," he added.

During the meeting, Guterres also noted how the number of severely food insecure people has doubled in just two years — from 135 million pre-pandemic to 276 million today.

Russia-Ukraine war could cause mass hunger and famine due to food insecurity, UN warns

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has accepted the resignation of the head of a United Nations agency that was under investigation for questionable investments.

Grete Faremo, a former Norwegian minister of justice and public security, had been undersecretary-general and executive director of the UN Office for Project Services since August 2014.

The office, headquartered in Copenhagen, says its mission is to provide infrastructure, procurement and project management services for a more sustainable world.

Faremo's resignation was accepted on Sunday, the day the New York Times reported that the agency made a baffling series of financial decisions that purportedly led to $25 million in losses.

The Times report followed an April 16 article in Devex, the media platform for the global development community by Brussels-based writer Ilya Gridneff, titled: What went wrong with UNOPS' ambitious impact-investing initiative.

That article said the investigation focused on a series of loans from the agency to a Singapore-based company that received tens of millions of dollars to develop plans to build more than 1 million affordable homes in six countries. Today, the entire project is stalled, UNOPS is owed tens of millions of dollars, and no houses have been built, it said.

Devex quoted an unidentified spokesperson for the agency as saying that steps are being taken to recover all outstanding amounts regardless of the source of activities.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Faremo's resignation was effective on Sunday. He said Jens Wandel of Denmark, a former special adviser to the secretary-general on reforms, will serve as acting head of the agency while a new executive director is recruited.

Russia struck Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Thursday (April 28) during United Nations Sectretary General Antonio Guterres' visit to the city. During his visit, Guterres spoke of and denounced 'absurdity' of war in 21st century.

The strikes took place in western part of the city wounding at least three people. The strikes were first in the capital in nearly two weeks. They were carried out after Guterres toured Bucha and other suburbs in which Russia faces allegations to have committed war crimes.

Ukrainian prosecutors said they were investigating 10 Russian soldiers for suspected atrocities in Bucha, where dozens of bodies in civilian clothes were found after Moscow's retreat, and had identified more than 8,000 alleged war crimes cases.

Prosecutor general Iryna Venediktova has told a German TV channel that these cases include "killing civilians, bombing of civilian infrastructure, torture" and "sexual crimes".

UN chief Antonio Guterres voices concern, calls Russian move a 'violation' of Ukraine’s sovereignty

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday told the security council on Wednesday that Afghanistan is "hanging by a thread'. He urged countries to authorise all transactions needed to carry out humanitarian activities.

He also made a case for suspension of any rules or conditions that constricted "lifesaving" aid operations. He said millions in Afghanistan were suffering extreme hunger and education and social services were on the brink of collapse. Lack of liquidity limited capacity of the UN and aid groups to reach people in need, he said.

"We need to give financial institutions and commercial partners legal assurance that they can work with humanitarian operators without fear of breaching sanctions," said Guterres, noting that the 15-member council last month adopted a humanitarian exemption to U.N. sanctions tied to Afghanistan.

About $ 9.5 billion of Afghan central bank funds remain frozen abroad. International development support has dried up since Taliban seized power in the country last August.

"There is compelling evidence of an emerging environment of intimidation and a deterioration in respect for human rights. This suggests that the consolidation of government authority may be leading toward control of the population by fear," the U.N. special envoy on Afghanistan, Deborah Lyons, told the council.

In December, donors to a frozen World Bank-administered Afghan Reconstruction Trust Fund agreed to transfer $280 million to the World Food Program and UN children's agency UNICEF to support nutrition and health in Afghanistan. Guterres said the remaining $1.2 billion in the fund needed "to be freed up urgently to help Afghanistan's people survive the winter."

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, told the council that Washington had moved to ensure that U.S. sanctions do not impede humanitarian activity and it is examining various options to ease the liquidity crunch."

Afghanistan 'hanging by a thread', UN chief Antonio Guterres tells Security Council

During a virtual address at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Davos Agenda 2022 on Monday (January 17), the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted urgent actions needed to help developing countries amid climate, coronavirus (COVID-19) and other crises.

Guterres appealed to the business leaders to support developing countries in order to reform the global financial system. In the current scenario, developing and low-income countries need access to COVID-19 vaccines, they need assistance to combat the climate crisis and its related consequences.

During the address, Guterres said that the low-income countries are at a huge disadvantage. "They're experiencing their slowest growth in a generation," Guterres said.

"The burdens of record inflation, shrinking fiscal space, high-interest rates and soaring energy and food prices are hitting every corner of the world and blocking recovery — especially in low- and some middle-income countries," he added.

Talking about Covid vaccine equity, he said, "Last fall, the World Health Organization unveiled a strategy to vaccinate 40 per cent of people in all countries by the end of last year and 70 per cent by the middle of this year. We are nowhere near these targets."

"Vaccination rates in high-income countries are shamefully seven times higher than in African countries, and we need vaccine equity now," he added.

Guterres, who began a second five-year term as UN chief on January 1. has long been pushing for more global action to address COVID-19 vaccine inequity and climate change and for reform of the global financial system.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday encouraged a change in actions toward sustainable food systems on the occasion of World Food Day, which falls on October 16.

In a video message, Guterres said World Food Day is not only a reminder of the importance of food to every person on the planet but also a call to action to achieve food security around the world.

Today, almost 40 per cent of humanity -- 3 billion people -- cannot afford a healthy diet, he said.

Hunger is on the rise, so too are undernourishment and obesity. The economic impacts of COVID-19 have made a bad situation even worse.

The pandemic has left an additional 140 million people unable to access the food they need, he noted.

"At the same time, the way we produce, consume and waste food is taking a heavy toll on our planet. It is putting historic pressure on our natural resources, climate and natural environment -- and costing us trillions of dollars a year," said Guterres. "As this year's theme makes clear, the power to change is in our hands. "The theme for this year's World Food Day is "Our actions are our future."

Last month, the world gathered for the UN Food Systems Summit. Countries made bold commitments to transform food systems: to make healthy diets more affordable and accessible, and to make food systems more efficient, resilient and sustainable at every step, from production and processing to marketing, transportation and delivery, he said.

"We can all change how we consume food, and make healthier choices -- for ourselves, and our planet. In our food systems, there is hope.
