<p>Shoojit Sircar’s recent film ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ may have Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana playing the lead characters- but the film, written by Juhi Chaturvedi, also had a memorable supporting cast.</p>

<p>A story predominantly about two men who are constantly trying to outwit each other- the film’s women characters too stood out. From 86-year-old Farukh Jaffar- who played Fatima Begum, to Srishti Shrivastava- who played Guddo- the film’s women were individualistic and held their own in front of the men.</p>

<p>Srishti, a known face on the web thanks to numerous TVF sketches and series, played the strong, calculative Guddo with ease. Someone who knows her strengths and is ambitious unlike her brother Bankey (Khurrana) Guddo knew how to deal with men double her age – with charm, sensibility and confidence.</p>

<p>“Everybody in life needs a Guddo, including me,” said Srishti while speaking to WION recently. “I also need sometimes a reality check. Guddo is great. She is really someone you could look upto and if someone is doing too much nonsense, just make her stand there,” the actress said explaining her character.</p>

<p>Srishti’s performance won her praise from across but the actress said the high point was when Amitabh Bachchan sent her a handwritten letter praising and congratulating her for her performance after he watched the rough cut of the film. “I have so many actors getting that letter, and I dreamt of getting one someday. <em>Isike liye kaam karna hai</em>,” the elated actress said.</p>

<p>For Srishti, working with Amitabh Bachchan was a dream come true. A fan of the superstar like millions of others right from her school days, she recalls how starstruck she was when she first visited his residence with the rest of the crew. “It was during narration. Of course, I didnt show how nervous and excited I was but I was in awe for sure.” The next time she met Bachchan was on set. “We were waiting for our shot when he turned his personal fan towards me and said, “<em>Madam aapko hawa to aa rahi hai na?”</em> that moment was everything for me,” she said with excitement.</p>

<p>Srishti was also all praises for her onscreen brother Ayushmann Khurrana. “He is so much fun to be around, makes the set a happy place - he talks to everyone. One doesn’t feel a star is on set- he comes on set as an actor, chills with us, it was great.”</p>

<p>For Srishti, the toughest scene in the film was with actor Vijay Raaz. “I was anxious the night before for the scene. I had to understand the crux of it, understand why she is doing what she is doing, I remember Shoojit Sir explaining to me that that’s how she is. I went and sat on the set beforehand when Vijay Raaz came, there was so much give and take between the two us as actors- the scene became what it is. It turned out to be a fun scene eventually.”</p>

<p>Owing to her work on the web(including a viral video ‘Why Should Hot Girls Have All The Fun and series Girls Hostel) and her cameo in ‘Gully Boy’, many feel that Guddo was an extension of her real personality. Srishti, though, begs to differ. “People think I am badass and very direct and it comes to me easily. But the reality is I am not as badass and it doesn't come naturally to me. In real life, I am a different person.”</p>

Like on stage(she does theatre regularly) I have been asked to subdue by performance in terms of body language. Similarly, Guddo is less but is more at the same time. So it was fun finding that rhythm.”</p>

<p>Srishti feels that with the expansion of digital space in India, there’s a lot of work for actors now. She admits that digital has a wide variety of content to offer but the magic of cinema is unmatched.</p>

<p>She is four films old- including a memorable cameo in ‘Gully Boy’, and the actress candidly admits that she wants to play lead roles in films. “I became an actress because I wanted to play a heroine in Hindi films. Not here for people to call me and say that there’s a role of heroine's best friend, I want them to offer me lead roles. I want to do everything-sing and dance, I want fly- everything!” says the actress before signing out.</p>

Taking to Instagram, Bachchan posted the portrait created by Aayush with his feet to congratulate the star for his stunning performance in the film. "This is Aayush .. divyaang, physically challenged or better to say, specially-abled.. cannot use his hands, so paints with his feet," Bachchan wrote in the caption.</p>

In filmmaker Shoojit Sircar's 'Gulabo Sitabo' which premiers on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, the actor sheds his Bachchan-ess and transforms into Mirza, a character that Hindi cinema hasn't witnessed so far.</p>

<p>Mirza is 78, walks with a stoop, and lives in Lucknow's Fatima Mahal, a crumbling haveli that has left its glorious days far behind and which is now inhabited by the owners and numerous tenants who keep the dilapidated place bustling. Mirza's wife Begum(Farrukh Jafar) is the owner and he merely acts as a caretaker at the beginning of the film, but as the story progresses you realise he is a greedy man, for whom the haveli has for long been the only motivation to live. His hindrances in becoming the sole owner are many- first his wife, then his tenant Bankey(Ayushmann Khurrana) who lives with his mother and three sisters and hasn't paid the meager rent of Rs 30 for months. But an hour into the film, you realise it is much more than just about these two individuals. It's a story of greed, of the futility to materialistic needs, of upmanship and of a haveli that everyone wants a piece of. While Mirza calls in a lawyer Christopher Clarke(Bijendra Kala) to get rid of his tenants, Bankey befriends a govt official Shukla (Vijay Raaz) who introduces himself as 'archeology' to trade the haveli for a LIG flat. With multiple players eyeing the peeling, worn off haveli- things naturally get chaotic and unintentionally funny.</p>

<p>Writer Juhi Chaturvedi is known for her nuanced screenplay. She and Sircar have given us films like 'Piku', 'Vicky Donor' and 'October' in the past. In 'Gulabo Sitabo', she keeps the humour sly and never in your face. A lot of the funny moments are situational and come in one-liners in the local dialect. You get a sense of how sweetly the insults are thrown at people in typically Lucknawi <em>andaaz</em> as Mirza and Bankey argue like a married couple with empty threats and hilarious insults, like when Mirza out of disgust calls Bankey '<em>Dimak kahi ke!</em> (You are a termite').</p>

<p>Bachchan and Khurrana's scenes are crackling. It isn't easy to stand your own in front of Bachchan, but Khurrana matches the superstar in every frame. The two actors play similar characters- both greedy, sullen and upset with life in general, willing to fight and give each other empty threats. Bachchan's character arc is greater and his scope of acting is more but Khurrana still manages to leave an impression. He is not playing his usual role of a common man heroically rising to the occasion. In 'Gulabo Sitabo', Khurrana is clearly out of his comfort zone as a man who is never happy with anything in life, is insecure about his lack of education and awareness, hates his job, and doesn't even get love from his girlfriend who at one point admits she wouldn't be with him if she knew he was poor beforehand.</p>

<p>In a film that has two men playing the leading characters, Chaturvedi also makes the women characters memorable. Be it Bankey's sister Guddo(Srishti Srivastava), or Begum (Farrukh Jafar) or even Bankey's weary girlfriend, the women have a bigger say in matters than the two men and are strong-willed individuals. Srivastav&nbsp; managed to make heads turn in her brief role in 'Gully Boy' and has been a known face on internet for a while. As the street smart Guddo, she is effective and impressive.</p>

<p>Farrukh Jafar as Begum is outstanding. She shines in her scenes, with limited dialogues but just the right amount of spunk and it is a delight to watch her. The scene where she and Mirza discuss her family is perhaps the high point of the film. So well enacted by both the actors- who are confident of their talent.</p>

<p>The film though belongs to Bachchan. Hiding behind a prosthetic nose, scarf, and a white goatee, Bachchan plays the ever conniving, slightly helpless, greedy Mirza with perfection. His walk, the way he makes his eyes light up every time he plots a new plan to outdo Bankey and his overall demeanor of a man who may physically be crumbling but is relentless in his pursuit- Bachchan gives a masterclass in acting. It's a pure delight to watch the man on screen.</p>

<p>Avik Mukhopadhyay, who has collaborated with Sircar previously captures Lucknow and the dilapidated haveli beautifully in his frame. The city and the haveli are important characters of the film, highlighting the lost glory of a wonderful era. Shantanu Moitra's background music is haunting and beautiful.</p>

<p>This is not Juhi Chaturvedi's best work. While she aces with her witty lines, her screenplay meanders. My only problem with the film was that it takes time to establish the plot. Its pace is leisurely and at the 2 hours runtime, the film appears a bit stretched. Sircar ultimately relies on his performers to narrate a layered satire and they do not disappoint.</p>

<p>The title 'Gulabo Sitabo' is based on popular folklore of two women by the same name who keep fighting over petty issues much like the two leads. Khurrana and Bachchan are great. So is the supporting cast that includes Raaz and Kala play the quintessential small-town govt officers to the hilt. The film though can be best enjoyed if you are aware of Lucknow or any other similar city in North India functions. The nuances are typical of a city that for centuries has been steeped in culture and now struggles to form a modern identity.</p>

<p>Sircar's film is the first major Bollywood film to have opted for the digital route amid the pandemic. There is naturally a lot of curiosity around it. One can't help but wonder how the film would have been received had it got a theatrical release because it doesn't offer a universal palate- instead, it unravels with multiple subtext and sly humour.</p>

His walk, the way he makes his eyes light up every time he plots a new plan to outdo Bankey and his overall demeanor of a man who may physically be crumbling but is relentless in his pursuit- Bachchan gives a masterclass in acting. It's a pure delight to watch the man on screen. Avik Mukhopadhyay, who has collaborated with Sircar previously captures Lucknow and the dilapidated haveli beautifully in his frame. The city and the haveli are important characters of the film, highlighting the lost glory of a wonderful era. Shantanu Moitra's background music is haunting and beautiful. This is not Juhi Chaturvedi's best work. While she aces with her witty lines, her screenplay meanders. My only problem with the film was that it takes time to establish the plot. Its pace is leisurely and at the 2 hours runtime, the film appears a bit stretched. Sircar ultimately relies on his performers to narrate a layered satire and they do not disappoint. The title 'Gulabo Sitabo' is based on popular folklore of two women by the same name who keep fighting over petty issues much like the two leads. Khurrana and Bachchan are great. So is the supporting cast that includes Raaz and Kala play the quintessential small-town govt officers to the hilt. The film though can be best enjoyed if you are aware of Lucknow or any other similar city in North India functions. The nuances are typical of a city that for centuries has been steeped in culture and now struggles to form a modern identity. Sircar's film is the first major Bollywood film to have opted for the digital route amid the pandemic. There is naturally a lot of curiosity around it. One can't help but wonder how the film would have been received had it got a theatrical release because it doesn't offer a universal palate- instead, it unravels with multiple subtext and sly humour.

It has been claimed that Rajeev Agarwal had submitted a story titled '16, Mohandas Lane' in the Cinestaan India`s Storyteller Script Contest, where Chaturvedi was a jury member.<br />

Refuting the news completely, Chaturvedi has said the film's story was her original idea. "My conscience is clear, and so are the facts in this matter. `Gulabo Sitabo` is my original work and I am proud of it. I shared the idea with the director (Shoojit Sircar) and lead actor (Amitabh Bachchan) of the film in early 2017. I subsequently registered the concept note for the film in May 2018," Chaturvedi said.<br />

Quashing claims made by Agarwal, Chaturvedi said, "I also must clarify the speculations around my conduct as a jury member for Cinestaan`s contest. I had no access to the so-called infringed script at any point in time, as alleged. This fact has been independently confirmed by Cinestaan as well. Even the Screenwriters Association (SWA), who has looked at this dispute in May 2020, decided in my favour. I speak now to request the press and public not to be disillusioned by false accusations, which are for publicity only. Acts of harassment, defamatory comments, and leaking confidential notices by the accusers only show their lack of faith in their own case. I stand by my truth," she said in a statement.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, a legal notice was sent by advocate Rizwan Siddiquee on behalf of Akira Agarwal to the makers of 'Gulabo Sitabo', with the demand to see the film`s complete script.<br />
<br />
Akira Agarwal has also filed a complaint at Mumbai`s Juhu Police Station in this regard. Alleging that the story of 'Gulabo Sitabo', its background and theme resemble '16, Mohandas Lane'.</p>

<p>According to the legal notice, Agarwal had submitted his story in the month March 2018 and his entry had subsequently been shortlisted. On June 28, 2018, the final script of the story was also submitted for the contest and all jury members had full access to the same.</p>

<p>Speaking to a news agency, Anjum Rajabali, Jury Chairman, Cinestaan Script Contest, said, "While it is true that `16, Mohandas Lane` was submitted to the first edition of the Cinestaan India`s Storytellers Script Contest of which Juhi Chaturvedi was one of the jury members, we want to clarify that she had absolutely no access to this particular script."</p>

<p>"The process of reading, assessing, screening and judging involved three clear stages. In the first stage, all the submitted stories were read by a bunch of readers and around 325 were shortlisted for me to read. From these, we invited 152 writers to develop their stories into screenplays and submit them to the contest. 126 screenplays were received. In the second stage, these were read by our readers and 20 shortlisted scripts were sent to me, which were read by two senior readers and myself. From these, we shortlisted eight scripts. And, in the third stage, these eight scripts were sent to the other three jury members, Aamir Khan, Raju Hirani and Juhi Chaturvedi, to be read by them and by me again.</p>

<p>"From among these, five were selected for the awards, and ranked in order of merit. While `16, Mohandas Lane` made it to the top 20, it did not enter the final list of 8 scripts which were sent to the jury. The jury, including Juhi, had absolutely no access to any script except for the 8 which were sent to them. So, it is totally incorrect to assume that since Juhi Chaturvedi was on the contest`s jury she had received the said script. There is clear documentation, including a trail of e-mails from myself to each jury member, which bears out the above facts unambiguously," Rajabali further shared.<br />
Sircar`s comedy 'Gulabo Sitabo' featuress Amitabh Bachchan as Mirza, landlord of an old dilapidated `haveli` in the heart of Lucknow, named Fatima Mahal, while Ayushmann Khurrana plays is his shrewd tenant, Baankey.<br />

The film is produced by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar, and is set to premiere worldwide on June 12 on OTT platform Amazon Prime Video.</p>

<p>Amitabh Bachchan is tagged as Bollywood`s Shahenshah&nbsp;but he doesn`t think he has a success story. The iconic star says he would describe his journey in showbiz as a "somehow managing to exist story" -- something he is still trying to do.</p>

<p>Speaking in an interview with IANS, Amitabh said,&nbsp;"My `success story` is wrongly expressed. It is not a success story, it is a `somehow managing to exist story`, and a still trying story."</p>

<p>Amitabh has his first release lined up during the COVID-19 time with Ayushmann Khurrana in 'Gulabo Sitabo'. On working with him, Amitabh said,&nbsp;"It has been an experience of having worked with a very accomplished, competent and an immensely talented artiste!"</p>

<p>"Firstly, every actor, artiste, creative talent, has the prerogative to make his or her own choices on the kind of work they wish to professionally get involved in -- bringing Ayushmann`s choices as being similar to mine is incorrect. I cannot say about Ayushmann, but my choices have been the entire responsibility and dependence on the makers that I have had the privilege to work with. They chose me, not I them. You have to ask AK why he chose what he chose to do and with whom."</p>

<p>It was Amitabh Bachchan who broke the news of Rishi Kapoor's death on Thursday morning. But the superstar maintained silence for the rest of the day on social media. He ultimately opened up and wrote a heartfelt tribute on his blog for his old friend and co-star of many years, Rishi Kapoor.<br />

The 77-year-old actor, alongside the note, shared an illustrational picture of Kapoor playing `Dafli`. The picture is a reference to the late icon`s famous song `Dafli Wale Dafli Baja` from the film `Sargam.`<br />

Sharing a few lines from his blog post as the caption, Bachchan wrote: "in Memoriam ...I had seen him at his home Deonar Cottage, Chembur, a young energetic, bubbly, mischief in his eyes Chintu, on those rare moments when I was privileged to have been invited to an evening at Raj ji`s house .."<br />

Nearly 18,000 people have signed the petition so far.</p>

<p>The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to nationwide lockdown in India and while it is important to stay home, it has also raised concerns for daily wage earners who have been adversely affected due to the pandemic.<br />

Superstar Amitabh Bachchan has announced that he would be providing ration of 1,00,000 daily wage earners of the film fraternity. Bachchan has joined hands with Sony Pictures Networks India and Kalyan Jewellers for this initiative.<br />
"Given the unprecedented nature of the situation we are in, an initiative undertaken by Mr Bachchan, We Are One has been supported by Sony Pictures Networks India and Kalyan Jewellers, through which the monthly ration of 1,00,000 households across the country will be funded," a statement released by Sony Pictures Networks on Sunday read.<br />

"Through a commercial tie-up with a leading chain of hypermarkets and grocery stores in India, digitally barcoded coupons have been distributed to a verified list of workers from the All India Film Employees Confederation.<br />
Furthermore, monetary help has also been extended to those in need," the statement further said. &nbsp;<br />

The time period of this initiative is not clear, yet. In fact, Big B is not the only one. Producers guild too has been providing ration to daily wage earners. Several technicians on film sets are paid on per day basis and due to the lockdown, their incomes have been deeply affected.<br />

Big B has already been part of an awareness video initiated by the Maharashtra government and will also be seen in another short film 'Family', which has been conceptualized and directed by Prasoon Pandey.
