<p>The crew member who handed Alec Baldwin the loaded gun that killed a cinematographer on the set of "Rust" expressed his shock and sadness Monday, in his first public comments since the tragedy.</p>

<p>David Halls' role in the accident on the New Mexico set of a 19th-century Western last month has been under scrutiny after he told police he had failed to fully check the firearm before the fatal incident.</p>

<p>In a statement to the New York Post on Monday, Halls said he is "shocked and saddened" by the death of Halyna Hutchins, but did not directly address the shooting or his role.</p>

<p>"Halyna Hutchins was not just one of the most talented people I've worked with, but also a friend," wrote Halls.</p>

<p>"It's my hope that this tragedy prompts the industry to re-evaluate its values and practices to ensure no one is harmed through the creative process again," he added.</p>

<p>Along with armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, first assistant director Halls was responsible for handling and checking weapons on set, and announcing "cold gun" -- industry lingo for an inert firearm.</p>

<p>According to a search warrant, he told detectives he "should have checked" that all the rounds in the Colt .45 gun were dummy, or inert, rounds, "but didn't."</p>

<p>A live round fired by Baldwin during rehearsal passed through Halyna Hutchins' body and struck director Joel Souza in the shoulder. Hutchins later died of her injury.</p>

<p>Nearly 100,000 people have since signed a petition to permanently remove firearms from sets, noting that effects such as the loud bang and muzzle flash can easily be added to fake rubber guns in post-production.</p>

<p>In his statement, Halls also said he had been "overwhelmed by the love and support," and wrote, "My thoughts are with all who knew and loved Halyna."</p>

<p>Prosecutors have refused to rule out criminal charges over the deadly shooting.</p>

One of the central mysteries about the killing of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins remains what kind of projectile was fired from the gun and how it got there. Investigators hope a forensic analysis of ballistic evidence will shed light on those questions, Juan Rios, spokesman for the Santa Fe Sheriff`s Department, said on Monday.<br />

In another revelation, a production company said the assistant director who handed Baldwin the gun and told him it was unloaded, had been fired from an earlier movie over a mishap with a gun.<br />
<br />
Production company Rocket Soul said Dave Halls was removed from the set of the independent movie "Freedom`s Path" in 2019 after a crew member incurred a minor and temporary injury when a prop gun was unexpectedly discharged.<br />
<br />
Halls could not be reached for comment.<br />
<br />
Hutchins, 42, was killed and director Joel Souza, 48, was injured when a revolver that Baldwin was using during rehearsal discharged. The actor had been told the gun was not loaded, according to court documents.<br />
<br />
The inventory list, filed in Santa Fe County Magistrate Court, showed investigators also had recovered three black revolvers, spent casings, a gun belt and other items.<br />
<br />
The accident happened on the set of 'Rust'&nbsp;at the Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe on Thursday.<br />
<br />
Rios said investigators had interviewed Hannah Gutierrez, 24, who was responsible for the safety of weapons on the set, but gave no details. Gutierrez has not spoken publicly, and Reuters has not been able to reach her.<br />
<br />
Baldwin, the director and others have also been interviewed but no charges have been brought.<br />
<br />
Before the incident, camera operators had walked off the set to protest working conditions, according to a sheriff`s department affidavit. The probe into the shooting is examining information beyond what happened that day, Rios said.<br />
<br />
Investigators "are looking at everything that should have been followed, from safety standards on down," Rios said.<br />
<br />
The Santa Fe County Sheriff and the local district attorney are scheduled to speak about the case at a news conference on Wednesday. Rios said it would take time for authorities to draw conclusions about what happened.<br />
<br />
In her first public statements about the incident, Baldwin`s wife, Hilaria, said on Monday that "it`s impossible to express the shock and heartache of such a tragic accident."</p>

Investigators recover ammunition from Alec Baldwin movie shooting scene

<p>Several Hollywood stars have come out in support of Alec&nbsp;Baldwin following the tragic on-set shooting that took place last week and left one dead and another injured.&nbsp;<br />

The actor was rehearsing a scene for his upcoming film 'Rust' in New Mexico when he accidentally discharged a firearm that he was told was unloaded- as per the affidavit submitted in the court.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The projectile struck director of photography Halyna Hutchins and director Joel Souza. While Souza was injured, Hutchins died from her injuries.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Baldwin, who has seen then been inconsolable, has met up with Hutchins husband and son. Several of his colleagues and friends from Hollywood extended their support to the actor.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
"Alec, you are a dear, kind man who wouldn't hurt anyone purposefully.
