At least 19 people were killed and nearly 2,000 inmates escaped in Sierra Leone when the country's main military barracks and prisons were attacked on the 19th of November. The Sierra Leone government designated the Sunday's assault as a failed coup attempt which aimed to "subvert and overthrow" the government. Several countries in the West and Central Africa are under military rule after a series of recent coups, including Sierra Leone's neighbour Guinea as well as Mali, Niger and Chad. In Sierra Leone itself, the political situation has been tense since June this year after President Julius Maada Bio's re-election in a disputed vote. Mohammed Saleh brings you the details.

Libya's state-owned energy firm said Sunday production had resumed at Al-Sharara oilfield, which provides a quarter of the country's daily oil output, two weeks after protests led to a shutdown.

The National Oil Corporation (NOC) announced the "lifting of force majeure" and the resumption of "full production" at Al-Sharara, which normally produces up to 315,000 barrels per day.

The NOC on January 7 declared "force majeure" at the southwestern oilfield "due to the closure of the site by protesters".

It did not elaborate at the time on the protesters' demands.

Repeated interruptions in crude production in the war-torn North African country have been caused by social and political protests amid clashes between rival factions.

Pope Francis, on Sunday (Jan 14) defended the historic decision to approve blessings for same-sex couples, saying that those in the Catholic Church who have resisted it have jumped to “ugly conclusions”. The statement comes nearly a month after Francis first made the announcement which has since sparked a debate in the Church.

‘The danger is…’

During an interview with Italy’s Channel 9, the Pope made his first public comments since the December 18 declaration which has sparked a widespread debate in the Church, with bishops in some countries, particularly in Africa, raising objections and refusing to let their priests implement it.

“Sometimes decisions are not accepted, but in most cases when decisions are not accepted, it is because they are not understood,” Francis said in response to a specific question about the declaration.

He added, “The danger is that if I don’t like something and I put it (the opposition) in my heart, I become a resistance and jump to ugly conclusions.”

“This is what happened with these latest decisions on blessings for all,” said Pope Francis referring to the declaration known by its Latin title Fiducia Supplicans.

On December 18, the Vatican declared that Roman Catholic priests can offer blessings to same-sex couples, provided these blessings are not incorporated into regular Church rituals or liturgies.

At the time and since then, the Vatican has repeatedly stressed that these blessings should not be confused with the sacrament of heterosexual marriage. However, the clarification which was given by the Vatican’s doctrinal department just this month did not sway bishops in Africa.

Notably, some countries in Africa have imposed or have sought to introduce laws that punish same-sex activity by imprisonment or even the death penalty.

‘The Lord blesses everyone’

When the decision was announced in December, the Vatican said that priests are encouraged to make decisions on a case-by-case basis, allowing the Church’s support for people seeking God’s help through a simple blessing.

“The Lord blesses everyone,” the Pope said during the interview. He added, “But then people have to enter into a dialogue with the blessing of the Lord and see the path that the Lord proposes.”

Foreign investors have continued their exodus from South African stocks, marking the eighth consecutive year of outflows, with a total of over $50 billion leaving the market.

Last year, South African equities worth $8.3 billion were sold, marking a record-long streak of decreasing foreign interest.

The past decade has proven challenging for emerging markets, reflected in Morgan Stanley Capital International's benchmark index gaining just over 3 per cent.

However, the Johannesburg benchmark index faced a loss of nearly 6 per cent in dollar terms, compounded by a 42 per cent depreciation of the rand against other currencies of developing nations.

Foreign investors' apprehensions about South Africa stem from a series of challenges, including corruption scandals, an energy crisis linked to the debt-ridden Eskom Holdings utility, and turmoil at Transnet SOC, the state-run rail and ports operator.

Bloomberg cited Ashish Chugh, a portfolio manager at Loomis, who pointed to these factors as contributors to foreign investors' wariness.

In a move that has heightened regional tensions, Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud signed into law the annulment of a contentious agreement between the breakaway Somaliland region and Ethiopia.

This is based on a Reuters report.

The deal, signed on New Year's Day, involved granting Ethiopia access to the Red Sea in exchange for recognising Somaliland as an independent nation. The law, signed on Saturday, rejects the agreement that would have permitted Ethiopia to lease a strategic portion of the port of Berbera for 50 years.

Somalia, asserting Somaliland as part of its territory, vehemently opposed the accord, fearing potential conflict in the region.

"This evening, I signed the law nullifying the illegal MoU between the government of Ethiopia and Somaliland," said President Mohamud, according to a Reuters report.

Emphasising the commitment to preserve unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity under international law, he did not provide specific details about the content of the new law or when the parliament passed it.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's aspiration to secure Red Sea access has long been a contentious issue in the Horn of Africa. The nullified agreement was part of Ethiopia's strategy to secure a 20 km stretch around the port of Berbera on the Gulf of Aden, providing access to the Red Sea. In return, Ethiopia would recognise Somaliland as an independent nation.

However, Somalia's rejection of this arrangement underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region, with Somalia considering Somaliland an integral part of its sovereign territory.

Abiy Ahmed's vision for Ethiopia's connection to the Red Sea has been a source of tension, with his national security adviser suggesting a potential compromise involving offering Somaliland a stake in the state-owned Ethiopian Airlines in exchange for access to the Red Sea.

Abiy's assertion in October that Ethiopia's existence is "tied to the Red Sea" reflects the significance he places on securing strategic maritime access. There has yet to be an official response from Somaliland or Ethiopian authorities regarding the nullification of the port deal.

The donkey skin trade, crucial for China's traditional medicine ejiao, faces challenges as the African Union and Brazil move towards banning the slaughter and export of donkeys, affecting a key supply source for China's booming industry.

China's massive annual demand for over five million donkeys, primarily for ejiao, relies heavily on imported skins due to domestic shortages.

Long Covid has been defined as a condition where symptoms of being infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus persist for three months or more. The research was conducted by a team of scientists from the University of Bari, Italy, and analysed the data of 29,213 people.

According to the study, researchers found that globally, at least 10 per cent of people infected with COVID-19 have this condition.

Following the comprehensive review of previous studies and analysis scientists also found that the estimates of incidence among low-income countries long Covid varies greatly. This has been attributed to hidden infections and the difficulty of accessing tests.

For example, among African nations, estimates range from two per cent in Ghana to a staggering 86 per cent in Egypt. The review also found that older people are more likely to experience long Covid, but did not find any significant difference between men and women at risk for the condition.

Cognitive impairment, according to the study, was the most common neurologic symptom of long Covid, while shortness of breath was the most common respiratory symptom. A quarter of those suffering from long Covid have reported post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The researchers noted how this particular finding was “concerning” since it adds an additional burden in mental health disorder brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and its chronic consequences have been put on a health system which is largely unprepared to deal with mental health conditions.

The team also found that a quarter of people with long Covid had a poor quality of life as a result, with fatigue and loss of appetite.

What is happening in Africa?

The high rate of estimated incidence of long Covid, particularly in African nations, has been attributed to the fact that less than 52 per cent of people are fully vaccinated, said the researchers. However, specific data on vaccination status and COVID-19 outcomes are largely unknown from the continent.

“To our knowledge, this is the first meta-analysis exploring prevalence, risk factors and symptomatology of long COVID in Africa,” the researchers wrote. The team has also urged for further research so that experts can properly assess the impact of long Covid in the African continent.

They also called on raising awareness of how prevalent this condition might be given the lack of a cure for long Covid, it may be able to help those affected.

Nearly 50% of those who contracted COVID-19 in Africa are suffering from long Covid: Study

An African scientist is working on a ‘gene drive technology’ that could potentially wipe out malaria or malaria-causing mosquitoes from the continent.

Abdoulaye Diabate, who was awarded the 2023 Falling Walls Prize for Science and Innovation Management for his research, is developing an innovative technique that can wipe out malaria-causing female mosquitoes by altering their genes.

What’s the technique?

Malaria is generally transmitted through the bite of female Anopheles mosquitoes, as male mosquitoes do not bite.

Under gene drive technology, female mosquitoes are prevented from producing new female offspring by releasing genetically modified male mosquitoes in the environment.

This would lead to the depletion of female mosquitoes, thus bringing down malaria causes throughout the continent.

“When the (gene-edited) mosquitoes are released in the field … they will spread across the entire mosquito population and cut malaria transmission right away,” the scientist from Burkina Faso was quoted as saying by CNN.

“The genetically modified mosquitoes are the ones to do the job for you … unlike the other (malaria control) interventions where humans run from place to place to deliver,” he added.

He also said that the method was more sustainable as well as budget-friendly.

However, Abdoulaye Diabate said that the technology could still take many more years to be ready for rolling out.

Africa’s malaria problem

Africa shoulders the world’s largest malaria burden, with the continent constituting 96 per cent of the total 619,000 deaths worldwide in 2021.

According to the WHO’s latest data, of those 96 per cent, 80 per cent of deaths occurred in children aged under five.

According to Diabate, developing innovative malaria-controlling tools was the only way to deal with this menace.

“Although bed nets are doing a fantastic job … we now have widespread insecticide resistance in the different species of mosquitoes, specifically those that are transmitting malaria,” he was quoted as saying.

Concerns

Despite the technology being touted as the promising one, health authorities around the world have pointed out ecological concerns that may emerge.

Some advocacy groups are vehemently opposing the technology, saying its impact on the ecosystem may never be predicted.

“Every living creature, even if it appears dangerous or harmful to humans, fulfills important tasks in its habitat. The extermination or even manipulation of a species will therefore have consequences for the entire ecosystem,” warned German-based advocacy group Save Our Seeds (SOS) on its website.

In a sinister plot, the Wagner Group is exploiting Africa's gold resources. Backed by the Kremlin, this private military company has secured over $2.5 billion from the African gold trade since the invasion of Ukraine. Gaining control of mines in the Central African Republic and Sudan, Wagner's operations extend Russia's geopolitical influence and indirectly finance its global campaigns.

The leader of the al-Qaeda-linked Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), Iyad Ag Ghaly recently published a video speaking publicly for the first time since 2017 and warned about a new phase of Jihad after lashing out at the military regimes in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger and their Russian allies.

The video footage was authenticated on Wednesday (Dec 13) by SITE, an American NGO specialising in monitoring radical groups.

‘Treacherous governments’

In the 22-minute video, Ag Ghaly urged local Muslims to support his fighters against the “treacherous governments” of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger and the Russian paramilitary group Wagner, which is active in Mali.

While jihadists are responsible for almost daily attacks on civilians and the army in these countries, Ag Ghaly in the video supposedly portrayed himself as a defender of the oppressed, according to a report by AFP.

The leader of the al-Qaeda-linked group also went on to criticise the Malian Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maiga saying. The “Islamic cause is totally incompatible with your project,” he asid, adding that the need for governance under the Islamic law “cannot be compromised”.

Notably, AFP citing Malian commentators and officials said that Ag Ghaly is considered as an unavoidable figure in efforts to end the country’s prolonged crisis.

When Felix Tshisekedi took office as president of the democratic republic of Congo following a disputed election in 2018, he promised to end decades of political repression and corruption stifling development in the central African country. But as he prepares for a re-election bid in December, rights groups, international allies, and rivals accuse his administration of stifling dissent just as previous governments did while he was in opposition. The European Union has also cancelled its election observation mission for the country, saying it would not be able to deploy people across the country for security reasons

Egyptians headed to the polls as voting began in a presidential election in which president Abdel Fattah El-Sissi faces no serious challenger. That’s despite the country’s ongoing economic crisis, with around 30% of its 104 million population living in poverty, according to official figures. The vote comes as israeli ground forces expand their operation in southern gaza, ordering palestinians to evacuate and head to the mediterranean coast or closer to the egyptian border

Egypt's Presidential Elections: Same or change in the offing?

2023 has been a decisive year in the fight against malaria. After 20 years of progress, malaria research has been at a standstill since 2020, but the deployment of the serums such as the rts,s, promises to turn the tide, at least for now. Many experts say it is time to end the killer disease once and for all, but how long will that take?

Despite war, young malawians are turning to israel for work amid economic crisis at home. Young adults in africa are applying for jobs on israeli farms, many of which desperately need workers following the october 7th hamas attack. However five years ago, it was a different story, many african migrants were being chased out of the nation by force. Most of them seem to have forgotten the past and are willing to stay the course.
