Pakistan says it carried out air and drone strikes on 10 targets in Afghanistan, accusing Kabul of allowing “terrorist sanctuaries” on its soil. The strikes reportedly included Kandahar, where residents heard a jet followed by a large explosion and saw a fire in the city. Afghan officials have yet to comment.

Pakistan: Air strikes hit 10 Afghanistan locations

Afghanistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned Pakistan's Charge d'Affaires in Kabul, lodging a formal protest over airstrikes in Kunar and Paktika that it says violated Afghan sovereignty and territorial integrity. While Pakistan claims the strikes killed 28 militants, Kabul insists three civilians died, calling the claims baseless and urging Islamabad to address its own internal security issues instead. The UN has documented over 1,100 civilian deaths from cross-border violence in Afghanistan this year alone, as this now-familiar diplomatic standoff repeats itself.

Pakistan's aggression comes at a time when it is scrambling to deal with growing internal dissatisfaction over former PM Imran Khan's prolonged incarceration. A brutal crackdown has been launcnhed ahead of Pakistan Tehreek-I-Insaaf's September 27 nationwide protest and long march.

As Pakistan faces Saudi Arabia's pressure for trying to shirk its Mecca Pact commitment and growing internal turmoil, Asim Munir's diversionary tactics are back. His forces reignited another front by conducting fresh air strikes on Afghanistan in the early hours of Monday. According to Taliban, the Pakistani army bombarded civilian areas in the provinces of Kunar and Paktika. While a woman and two men were killed and four others were injured in Kunar's Nurgal district, no casualties were reported in the Paktika strike that damaged a house and a shop in the Barmal district. Condemning these strikes, Taliban accused the Pak military establishment of committing such a crime to divert attention from its security failures within its own country. It also vowed to respond appropriately to what it called... this aggression. Visuals showed the spate of destruction in Kunar province where the strikes took place. People were seen trying to search for their belongings in the rubble of their destroyed home. Remnants of a bomb were also recovered from the spot. After performing funeral prayers for the victims, residents lashed out at Pakistan for targeting innocent civilians. On its part though, Pakistan's information ministry claimed that the calibrated strikes were carried out on hideouts and safe havens of what it said were terrorist groups responsible for the recent terror attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It added that 28 terrorists were killed after a suicide bombers' training centre was reportedly destroyed. This comes barely a few hours after six Pakistani soldiers were killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Hangu district near the Afghan border. Earlier on September 18, the city of Kohat was rocked by a deadly attack. A suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden vehicle at the police headquarters and terrorists stormed the compound thereafter, leading to 31 deaths and more than a hundred injuries. It is worth noting that Pakistan had issued a veiled warning to Afghanistan after this attack, asserting that it has the 'will and capability' to eliminate such threats wherever they are. Now, although both nations agreed to a ceasefire in October 2025, the truce ended in February this year after Pakistan conducted air strikes in Afghanistan. The worst escalation took place in March, when Munir's forces bombed a Kabul hospital. While Taliban stated that about 400 people were killed, the UN assistance mission in Afghanistan independently verified the killing of at least 269 civilians whereas 122 others were wounded. In June-end, Pakistan killed at least 36 civilians with air strikes on the three eastern provinces of Paktika, Kunar and Paktia. Subsequently, Afghanistan claimed to have targeted ISIS centres in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, a claim which Pakistan denied. Now, Pakistan's targeting of civilians has been confirmed by UN itself. From April to June this year, UN documented killing of 57 Afghan civilians and injuries to 342 others due to Pakistan's attacks. It also flagged an increase in casualties caused by unexploded ordnance left behind in areas close to the border. Pakistan's aggression comes at a time when it is scrambling to deal with growing internal dissatisfaction over former PM Imran Khan's prolonged incarceration. Ahead of Pakistan Tehreek-I-Insaaf's September 27 nationwide protest and long march to demand Khan's release from jail, the authorities have commenced a brutal crackdown. The PTI founder's sisters, Aleema Khan, Dr. Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi, have been detained for 30 days under the pretext of maintaining public order. According to Khan's son Kasim, their children have been arrested as well. Stressing that no nation should tolerate this establishment, he called for global action. Afghanistan's Taliban-led government is making a bold economic pitch to the United States, highlighting the country's vast mineral reserves—estimated to be worth as much as $1 trillion. Taliban officials are urging American investors to explore opportunities in Afghanistan's untapped deposits of lithium, copper, rare earth elements, gold and other critical minerals. The move comes as global competition for strategic resources intensifies, raising questions about whether economic interests could outweigh political and security concerns surrounding engagement with the Taliban regime.

Five years after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, the war-ravaged nation continues to face a deepening humanitarian crisis, restrictions on women and girls, critical child malnutrition and growing international isolation. Where does Afghanistan stand under Taliban rule, and what challenges does the country face?

UNESCO has warned that the Taliban’s continued ban on girls’ and women’s education could cause decades of damage to Afghanistan’s social and economic future.

An estimated 2.4 million Afghan girls have been excluded from secondary education since 2021, while women have also been barred from attending universities. Afghanistan remains the only country where girls and women are formally prevented from accessing secondary and higher education.

UNESCO estimates that the restrictions could push nearly 600,000 women out of the workforce by 2066, potentially resulting in around $9.6 billion in cumulative income losses.

The UN agency has also warned of a shortage of more than 11,000 qualified female teachers by 2030. More than 2 million primary-school children are already out of school for reasons beyond the ban on girls’ education.

Pakistan's military has lashed out at remarks by Afghan Taliban Agriculture Minister Mawlawi Attaullah Omari, who said Afghanistan and India share the same DNA. Responding from Rawalpindi, military spokesperson Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry rejected the claim, questioned the comparison on religious grounds, and described India-Taliban ties as a "master and slave" relationship.

Amnesty International has called for Pakistan's air strikes on a hospital in Kabul to be investigated as a 'war crime'. As per the Taliban, 400 people lost their lives in this dastardly attack on March 16. Amnesty dismissed Pakistan's claim that the facility was a storage hub for ammunition.

Amnesty International has accused Pakistan of a possible war crime over a March 16 airstrike on Kabul's Omid Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre, which reportedly killed at least 269 civilians. The rights group says its investigation found no evidence supporting Pakistan's claim that the medical facility was being used for military purposes and urged an independent investigation into the attack.

Pakistan has intensified its crackdown on undocumented Afghan nationals following the July 10 deadline for illegal residents to leave the country. Authorities have been instructed to arrest and deport Afghans without valid visas or legal documents, while action will also be taken against those providing shelter or rental accommodation. The move expands Pakistan's ongoing repatriation campaign, with over one million Afghans already returned, raising concerns over Afghanistan's humanitarian and economic challenges.

In remarks that signal Kabul’s push for greater economic engagement, CdA Noor said the relationship has grown significantly since the Islamic Emirate took power in 2021. “Our relations with India have not started tomorrow, these are historic ties. Our cultures, traditions are similar. India, Afghanistan are very close. This relationship has a strong people-to-people element, something that will remain like that,” he stated. Noor, who assumed charge at the Afghan embassy in New Delhi in January 2026, pointed to concrete steps in political engagement. Afghanistan maintains consulates in Mumbai and Hyderabad, and four Afghan ministers have visited India since October 2025. “Ever since Islamic Emirate took charge in Kabul, our political ties with India have strengthened. Steps have been taken... Political ties have strengthened with each passing day,” he added. Afghanistan’s traditional farming sector faces challenges, including water scarcity in places like Kabul. Noor appealed for Indian expertise, saying, “India is not just a market for us, India has advanced agriculture, technology. India can help our agriculture sector... We want Indian help in water management and agriculture… We can work on that, so that water from Panjshir can come to Kabul.” Trade between the two countries is approaching $1 billion despite regional disruptions. Noor acknowledged the impact of the US-Iran conflict on connectivity routes, including the Chabahar port, but said traders have adapted. “The US-Iran war has caused global issues and impacted connectivity routes but our traders continue to work... If the land route is closed, air routes are open.” Also Read: ‘Want death to come on my own soil’: Sheikh Hasina says will return, surrender in December The top Afghan diplomat in Delhi also extended an invitation to Indian investors, stressing improved security. “Ever since Islamic Emirate govt has come, from Badakhshan to Kandahar to Herat to Nangarhar, peace has come....We have an anti-corruption process, mechanism. Afghanistan has a number of opportunities, especially in the agriculture sector.” He was speaking at PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) which was hosting a high-level delegation from Afghanistan led by Afghan Agriculture minister Ataullah Omari. India has substantially upped its engagement with the Afghan government, from sending a technical team in June 2022 to Foreign Minister Muttaqi visiting Delhi in October 2025. India has upgraded its Kabul mission to a full embassy status after the visit of Afghan FM Muttaqi. New Delhi continues to stress people-centric support, including discussions on agriculture, trade, and unfinished infrastructure projects.
