The US State Department said the two-day discussions with the Taliban team in Doha, Qatar (illegal in Russia as a terrorist organisation) were professional, and Washington will observe the Taliban's actions.

"The discussions were candid and professional with the US delegation reiterating that the Taliban will be judged on its actions, not only its words," US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said in a statement.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi held talks with visiting US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman at the Foreign Office.

Sherman confirmed that amidst the backdrop of Taliban crisis in Afghanistan, Washington will continue its engagement with Pakistan on steps related to counter terrorism.

"The United States and Pakistan have a long history of security cooperation and deep personal relationships between our military leaders, both of which are essential components of our counterterrorism efforts," she said.

I met today with Pakistani Foreign Minister @SMQureshiPTI to discuss Afghanistan’s future and the important and long-standing U.S.-Pakistan relationship. We look forward to continuing to address pressing regional and global challenges. pic.twitter.com/1tmUAMC18I — Wendy R. Sherman (@DeputySecState) October 8, 2021 × She also said that the Biden administration wants to make sure that there is "no terrorism here in Pakistan, in Afghanistan or in any country in the region or in the world for that matter". Her visit in Pakistan comes immediately after she completed her visit to India. Sherman, during an event in Mumbai, had claimed that she was visiting Pakistan with a "specific and narrow purpose" of talks on Afghanistan as Washington does not see itself building a "broad-based relationship" with Pakistan. Sherman’s comments were not welcomed by Pakistan, due to which she received a rather cold welcome in the South Asian country which has been recently criticised for its stance on Taliban in Afghanistan. There is a famous proverb that the enemy of my enemy is my friend and it is, in reality, playing out in Afghanistan right now. As the Afghan Taliban and Beijing get cosy, their opponents -- mainly the isis-k in Afghanistan and terrorists belonging to China's persecuted minority - the Uighurs are joining hands.

The US delegation is hoping that they will be able to press Taliban to work on providing proper human rights and freedom to women and minority groups in the South Asian country.

"We will press the Taliban to respect the rights of all Afghans, including women and girls, and to form an inclusive government with broad support," the spokesperson said Friday. "As Afghanistan faces the prospect of a severe economic contraction and possible humanitarian crisis, we will also press the Taliban to allow humanitarian agencies free access to areas of need," he said.

However, the US has stated clearly that this face-to-face communication does not indicate that the Biden administration has recognised Taliban as the new official government of Afghanistan. The delegation will urge the terrorist organisation to show positive changes in their behaviour to win the trust of the US government and several other western governments.

When Taliban took over Afghanistan on August 16, 2021, people all around the world were worried that darkness would take over the country, but metaphorically. However, seems like this is about to happen literally now.

Afghanistan faces the danger of losing all of its electricity as majority of the electricity bills remain unpaid since Taliban took control of the country.

The neighbouring countries of Afghanistan help the country by supplying nearly 78 per cent of its power needs. However, the Taliban’s new government is failing to pay the bills.

Before Taliban took over, Afghanistan used to pay nearly $20 to 25 million every month to neighbouring countries such as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Iran. Due to this, Afghanistan now has unpaid electricity bills of nearly $62 million, due to which the supplier countries can cut power supply any time they want, acting CEO of Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat told Al Jazeera.
